Apple Home can control accessories that explicitly support Apple Home or a Matter category the Home app supports. Apple lists Matter-compatible air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, plugs, switches, thermostats, blinds and roller shades, plus motion, ambient-light, contact, temperature and humidity sensors. Matter accessories need a home hub to add to the Home app, and Thread-enabled Matter accessories also need Thread-capable infrastructure. Compatibility depends on the exact model, connection type and supported functions—not just the product category.
Which accessories does Apple Home support?
Apple’s Matter support list covers these categories:
- Air conditioners
- Bridges
- Lights
- Locks
- Plugs
- Switches
- Thermostats
- Blinds and roller shades
- Motion, ambient-light, contact, temperature and humidity sensors
This is a list of Matter categories supported in Apple Home, not a guarantee that every product in a category works. Check the exact model’s listing for explicit Apple Home, HomeKit or Matter support, and confirm that Apple Home supports the functions you want to use. Apple’s current Matter accessory list explains the supported categories.

What does the Apple home hub do—and when do you need one?
A home hub is part of the household setup for Apple Home; it is not a compatibility label for accessories. Apple says Matter accessories require a home hub to add to the Home app. For Thread-enabled Matter accessories, Apple requires Thread-capable infrastructure as well. The accessory, its protocol and Apple Home’s support for its functions all remain relevant.

Apple home hubs and Thread
Apple says HomePod mini and HomePod become hubs when set up. Apple TV becomes a hub when added to a room in the Home app. Thread support is more specific: Apple names HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-enabled home hub examples. Do not assume every Apple TV or HomePod model supports Thread.
Apple also allows a supported third-party Thread border router. Its support page states: “Thread-enabled Matter accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub, such as HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet or a supported third-party border router.” See Apple’s home hub setup requirements for the current details.

Matter and Thread are different
Matter is an interoperability standard for smart-home accessories; Thread is a networking technology that some accessories use. A Matter accessory does not necessarily use Thread. Check whether the exact model connects over Wi-Fi or Thread, then confirm that your home has the infrastructure its connection requires.
