Three kinds of devices can add smart control to an air conditioner: a Wi-Fi infrared controller for a compatible remote-controlled AC, a wired smart thermostat for compatible central HVAC, or Wi-Fi controls already built into the AC. The right choice depends on how your system is controlled—not just whether it cools a room.
What smart devices can pair with an air conditioner?

1. Wi-Fi infrared controller: for a remote-controlled room AC
A Wi-Fi infrared controller is usually the most relevant add-on for a window, portable, or mini-split air conditioner that already works with an infrared remote. It sends commands to the AC in the same way the remote does, while providing control through an app. Schedules and smart-home integrations depend on the particular controller.
Sensibo says its controllers work with virtually any AC that has a working infrared remote and lists window, portable, split, high-wall, cassette, and central AC types. Cielo lists its Breez controllers for mini-split, window, and portable ACs. These are manufacturer compatibility claims, not a guarantee for every model. Check these things before choosing one
- Confirm the AC uses a working infrared remote. A remote that communicates by another method may not work with an infrared controller.
- Check the exact AC brand and model, or the remote, in the controller maker’s compatibility resource.
- Place the controller where it can send an infrared signal to the AC. Because it imitates the remote, an obstructed signal path can prevent commands from reaching the unit.
- Verify which app and smart-home integrations the specific controller supports; features vary by model.

2. Wired smart thermostat: for compatible central air
A wired smart thermostat is intended for a different setup: compatible ducted central HVAC. It connects through the system’s thermostat wiring rather than sending remote-like infrared commands. That makes it a possible choice for central air, but not a general substitute for an infrared controller on a remote-controlled window or portable AC.
Compatibility depends on the HVAC system, its voltage, and the wiring at the thermostat. Cielo’s compatibility checker distinguishes ducted-system thermostats from mini-split controllers and says its central smart thermostats are for 24V systems. Mysa lists a central thermostat for central AC and other compatible systems, and says a C-wire or adapter may be required. Check the Cielo compatibility checker or Mysa thermostat information for the specific product. If you cannot identify the wiring or voltage, consult a qualified HVAC installer rather than guessing.

3. Built-in Wi-Fi controls: check before buying an add-on
Some air conditioners may include their own Wi-Fi or smart-home controls. Check the unit’s manual, app, or manufacturer support page for your exact model before purchasing a separate controller. If the built-in controls provide the features you want, an add-on may not be necessary.
Do not assume that a feature available on one model or product line is available on another. Confirm the exact AC model and which app or smart-home connections it supports. For a remote-controlled room AC, an infrared controller is generally the add-on category to investigate; for ducted central HVAC, check whether a compatible wired thermostat is appropriate.

Can I make my window AC smart?
Possibly. Start by checking whether the window unit uses a working infrared remote and whether a Wi-Fi infrared controller supports its model or remote. A compatible controller can send remote-like commands, but compatibility and a suitable signal path matter. If the AC has built-in Wi-Fi controls, check its manual or manufacturer support information first.
Can I use a smart plug instead?
Do not treat a generic smart plug as a universal or full-featured AC controller. Whether one can safely switch a particular air conditioner depends on the unit’s manual, electrical requirements, and the plug’s ratings. The information available here does not establish compatible AC models or plug ratings, so check both manufacturers’ specifications before considering that approach.
