For Skyrim NPC AI mods, “smoothly” has two separate meanings: NPCs must use the right packages without colliding or standing idle, and the game must maintain acceptable frame time. The most effective fixes are compatibility and load-order decisions, not blindly changing global AI values. Identify the exact mod and version, follow its compatibility rules, keep layout and navigation-mesh edits compatible, and install only patches that match the plugins in your list.
AI Overhaul’s main and Lite editions have different technical scopes. Immersive Citizens has its own ordering exceptions and a specific warning against changing the sandbox-cylinder defaults. Treat the published performance figure for Immersive Citizens—“around 1%”—as the author’s estimate, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for every load order.
What “smoothly” means for NPC AI mods
An NPC overhaul can appear broken even when the frame rate is fine. A villager may stand in one place because a package cannot find a valid marker, walk into a newly moved object, or fail to navigate a city whose navmesh no longer matches the AI data. These are behavior and compatibility failures.
Frame-rate impact is a separate question. The available Immersive Citizens FAQ says, “No, no significant performances impact (around 1%).” That is an author-reported estimate; the FAQ does not provide an independent test method, hardware list, or benchmark set. No universal frame-rate target can therefore be promised. Resolve package, marker, layout, and navmesh conflicts before changing graphics settings or global AI values.

Start with the exact game, mod, and version
Before changing a plugin position, write down:
- Whether you are using Skyrim Special Edition and which game revision your platform currently runs.
- The exact release and edition of the AI mod: AI Overhaul main, AI Overhaul Lite, or Immersive Citizens.
- Every plugin that changes a city, interior, NPC placement, furniture, idle markers, or navigation mesh.
- Every compatibility patch already installed, including the versions named by that patch.
- The author’s current installation and save-game requirements.
Skyrim Special Edition is the prerequisite for readers who do not already own the game; the central tuning work here is software configuration, not a hardware upgrade. A load-order instruction that is safe for one edition or mod release can be wrong for another, so do not apply an older guide’s positions without checking the current documentation.
AI Overhaul main versus AI Overhaul Lite
The two AI Overhaul editions should not be treated as interchangeable. The mod page describes different implementation choices, which directly affect conflict risk.
| Edition | NPC and world changes | Behavior mechanism | Compatibility implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI Overhaul main | Edits NPC AI data and packages and adds idle markers. | Behavior is delivered through those direct NPC and marker changes. | More records and physical markers can overlap with NPC replacers, city edits, interiors, or other packages. Check conflicts for the actual list. |
| AI Overhaul Lite | Avoids direct NPC edits and does not add the main version’s extra markers. | Uses an AI quest to provide its behavior layer. | The author describes Lite as more compatible, but that is not a guarantee for every combination of mods. |
| Immersive Citizens | Uses its own AI behavior and compatibility model; the author’s documentation emphasizes city, interior, marker, and navmesh interactions. | Follow the author’s maintained compatibility and ordering instructions. | Exact patches and layout compatibility matter more than a universal “put it last” rule. |
Choose based on the feature you actually need. A broad behavior overhaul can require more attention to records and physical spaces; a lighter layer may fit better when your list already contains extensive NPC or settlement edits. The documentation does not establish one option as best for every platform or load order.

AI Overhaul’s listed settings: values, not universal recommendations
For AI Overhaul 1.9 and later, the mod page lists these changed game settings:
| Setting | Listed value | What the listing means |
|---|---|---|
fAIInDialogueModeWithPlayerDistance |
240 | Value changed by the mod. |
fAIDialogueDistance |
120 | Value changed by the mod. |
fAIBestHeadTrackDistance |
400 | Value changed by the mod. |
fAIMaxHeadTrackDistance |
200 | Value changed by the mod. |
iAINumberActorsComplexScene |
30 | Value changed by the mod; it is not a performance benchmark. |
These are documentation of what the mod changes, not a request for every player to copy the numbers into a global settings file. Do not stack another AI tweak that changes the same entries unless you have verified which plugin should win and why. If you remove or replace AI Overhaul, re-check whether those settings are still being supplied and whether another mod now controls them.
Why Immersive Citizens conflicts with layouts and navmeshes
Immersive Citizens’ author identifies physical-world changes as a major source of trouble. An AI package can be logically correct yet fail in play when the space it expects has changed.

City and interior layout edits
A plugin that moves, removes, or adds buildings, doors, furniture, or other obstacles can invalidate an NPC’s route or activity. An NPC may try to reach a location that no longer exists, become trapped against a newly placed object, or stop using a package because its required furniture is unavailable.
Idle and furniture markers
Markers tell NPCs where an idle or work action can occur. Moving or deleting a marker can make a package ineffective even if the NPC records themselves load correctly. When an NPC repeatedly idles in an unexpected place, compare the marker and furniture edits in the conflicting plugins rather than assuming the problem is a graphics setting.
Navigation-mesh edits
Navmesh changes determine where an actor can walk. A city overhaul that changes streets or interiors may leave the AI plugin’s routes inconsistent with the final world. Load order cannot repair every genuinely incompatible navmesh; an appropriate patch or a compatible version of one of the layout mods is required.

A practical load-order procedure
- Inventory the list. Record the exact AI plugin, its version, city and interior overhauls, NPC replacers, marker or furniture edits, navmesh edits, and patches. Remove duplicate or obsolete patches before sorting anything.
- Read the AI mod’s current compatibility page. For Immersive Citizens, use the author’s maintained list and ordering exceptions for every relevant city, interior, NPC, and patch plugin. Do not rely on a rule that places the AI plugin at the very end in all cases.
- Use “near the bottom” only as a starting point. The Immersive Citizens author suggests a position near the bottom, then documents plugins that must be above or below it. Apply those named exceptions literally; a patch can impose a different relationship.
- Install only an exact-match patch. A patch is appropriate only when the specific mods and versions it supports are present. One Bethesda listing gives the order
Immersive Citizens → MorrowLoot Ultimate → patch. That is an example for that patch, not a template for unrelated combinations. - Resolve physical conflicts. If the compatibility notes mention a city, interior, marker, or navmesh conflict, use the supported patch or remove one of the conflicting edits. Repositioning a plugin alone may leave the world geometry incompatible.
- Respect installation and save requirements. Follow the author’s current instructions for installing, updating, starting a save, or removing the mod. Do not assume that a reordered plugin is safe to add or remove from an established save.
- Test one change at a time. Visit the affected settlement or interior, observe the NPCs during their relevant schedule, and keep a record of the change. If several plugins are moved together, you cannot identify which adjustment fixed or introduced the behavior.
Do not casually change the sandbox-cylinder defaults
The Immersive Citizens author specifically warns against plugins that alter the defaults for fSandboxCylinderTop and fSandboxCylinderBottom. Changing these values can leave NPCs inactive for a long time or prevent the engine from loading some NPCs. This is an engine-behavior risk, not a routine optimization switch.
If a guide tells you to raise or lower either sandbox-cylinder setting, first establish that the instruction is written for your exact Immersive Citizens release and load order. In the absence of an author-supported reason, leave the defaults alone and investigate package, marker, layout, and navmesh conflicts instead.
Choosing among the three approaches
| Your priority | Most relevant choice or check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum behavior changes and you can audit many conflicts | AI Overhaul main, provided its direct NPC and marker edits are compatible with the rest of the list. | It changes NPC AI data and packages and adds idle markers, so it can deliver a broader change while requiring more conflict checking. |
| A lighter behavior layer for a heavily customized list | AI Overhaul Lite, after confirming that the quest-based implementation supports your other mods. | The author describes it as more compatible because it avoids direct NPC edits and extra markers; compatibility is still list-dependent. |
| Immersive Citizens’ behavior model | Immersive Citizens with its exact compatibility patches and documented order. | The author’s rules address layout, markers, interiors, cities, and navmeshes, with exceptions that differ by plugin. |
| You are deciding between AI behavior and dialogue or survival changes | Compare the actual feature goal, not a community ranking. | A community question such as “What is better? Immersive Citizens – AI Overhaul SE or Relationship Dialogue Overhaul + Run for your lives?” expresses one reader’s wording, not a consensus or a current compatibility verdict. |
Before choosing, answer four questions: Does the desired feature require broad schedules or only a lighter behavior layer? Which installed plugins edit the same NPCs or spaces? Is there a patch for the exact versions? What installation and save rules does the author currently require? If any answer is unknown, resolve it before committing to the mod.

Troubleshoot symptoms in the order they occur
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| NPCs stand idle or never begin an expected routine | Missing or moved idle/furniture markers; a package conflict; a changed interior or city layout. | Check the compatibility list and compare the physical edits. Install the supported patch or remove the conflicting layout edit. |
| NPCs walk into objects or cannot reach a destination | Changed layout or navmesh. | Verify that the final worldspace has a compatible navmesh and that the AI plugin is not being combined with an unsupported layout version. |
| Some NPCs become inactive for a long time | Sandbox-cylinder overrides, especially changes to fSandboxCylinderTop or fSandboxCylinderBottom. |
Remove the unsupported override and restore the documented defaults before testing other changes. |
| NPCs fail to load | Sandbox-cylinder changes or a severe plugin conflict. | Undo sandbox edits first, then check exact plugin versions, required masters, and the author’s ordering exceptions. |
| Behavior is correct but frame rate is lower | A setup-specific performance issue rather than proof that the AI package is incompatible. | Measure the affected location on your own hardware, keep AI settings unchanged unless the mod author documents a reason, and separate frame-time testing from behavior troubleshooting. |
How to interpret the performance claim
The Immersive Citizens FAQ’s “around 1%” figure is useful as the author’s expectation, but it is not a reproducible benchmark for every system. The opened documentation provides no independent measurement, test scene, hardware configuration, or comparison methodology. Treat your own frame-time observations as setup-specific and avoid presenting that percentage as a guaranteed cost.
AI Overhaul’s iAINumberActorsComplexScene = 30 is likewise a setting value, not evidence that the mod will hold a particular frame rate. A larger or smaller value should not be adopted as a generic optimization without documentation for the exact mod release and the other plugins controlling the same setting.
Maintenance after an update
Revisit the compatibility and ordering instructions whenever you update the game, the AI mod, a city or interior overhaul, or a patch. A patch that was correct for one version may no longer match the records or layout in another. Keep a written list of intentional order relationships, and make changes incrementally so a new idle, collision, or loading problem can be traced to one update.

The reliable rule is simple: use the least invasive AI option that delivers the behavior you want, preserve the documented settings, honor exact compatibility exceptions, and treat worldspace and navmesh changes as first-class conflicts. That approach improves both NPC reliability and the chances of keeping frame-time costs within what your own system can handle.
