Skyrim Special Edition is enough to play the PS5 version. Bethesda provides existing Special Edition owners with a free next-generation upgrade that improves graphics and loading. You need the paid Anniversary Edition upgrade only if you want its additional Creation Club content. If your copy is a PS4 disc, keep inserting that disc whenever you play; the disc remains part of the PS5 ownership path.
The phrase “PS5 DLC” causes confusion because it can mean two different things: the free PS5-generation game upgrade or the paid Anniversary content package. The distinction determines what you need to buy.

What “PS5 DLC” means in Skyrim
The free PS5-generation upgrade
Bethesda’s support guidance says the next-generation upgrade is free for owners of Skyrim Special Edition. It optimizes the game for PS5 with enhanced graphics, faster loading times and other improvements. This is an upgrade to the game version, not a purchase of Anniversary Edition content.

The paid Anniversary Edition upgrade
Anniversary Edition is Special Edition plus a bundle of additional Creation Club content. Bethesda says owners of Special Edition can purchase an Anniversary Edition upgrade separately. That purchase is relevant when you want the extra quests, items, gameplay additions and other Creations included in the Anniversary package; it is not required merely to access the PS5 version.

How to move an existing Special Edition to PS5
Digital Special Edition
- Sign in on PS5 with the PlayStation account that purchased Special Edition.
- Open your game library or the Skyrim product page and look for the PS5 version or next-generation upgrade option.
- Select the PS5 version and download it. The exact store wording can vary by region and by whether the account owns a cross-generation bundle.
- Launch the installed PS5 version while remaining signed in to the purchasing account. If you own eligible digital add-ons, Bethesda’s general next-generation guidance ties their transfer to the same platform account that bought them.
Do not assume that an entitlement on one PlayStation account automatically becomes an entitlement on every profile. If the PS5 store still shows a purchase price, first check which account is active and review that account’s transaction history before buying anything again.
Physical PS4 Special Edition
- Insert the PS4 Special Edition disc into a PS5 console with a disc drive.
- Open the Skyrim game hub and select the available upgrade or PS5 version.
- Install the PS5 game while the disc is present.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever you play. Bethesda’s general PS4-to-PS5 instructions state that the disc is still required after the upgrade because it verifies ownership.
The disc route is therefore not a way to convert a physical copy into a permanently disc-free digital license. A PS5 model without a disc drive cannot use a disc-based entitlement; that situation requires a digital ownership path instead.

What Anniversary Edition adds
Anniversary Edition is best understood as a content upgrade layered onto Special Edition. Bethesda describes it as Special Edition with additional Creation Club material. Existing Special Edition owners can purchase the Anniversary upgrade rather than buying the base game again.

Bethesda’s Anniversary support article describes 74 Creations, with 48 then available and 26 described as to be released, showcasing more than 500 individual elements. Those figures are a snapshot from that support material, whose publication date was not exposed; they should not be treated as a guaranteed current inventory. Content availability and store presentation can change.

Physical-disc ownership: the detail people miss
Bethesda specifically confirms that people who own the physical Special Edition disc can upgrade to Anniversary Edition. The disc must be in the console and the game installed when following that route. Anniversary content is not automatically included just because the PS4 disc qualifies for the free PS5-generation upgrade.
Think of the disc as both the base-game license and the key needed at launch. If you lend it away, sell it or leave it outside the console, the upgraded installation does not become an independent digital copy. Keep the disc with the PS5 whenever you intend to play.

Digital DLC and PlayStation-account ownership
Bethesda’s general answer about additional content says eligible purchased digital DLC transfers to the next-generation version when the same platform account that purchased the content is signed in. This is account-based guidance, not a promise that every historical add-on will appear under every profile on a console.
- Identify the PSN account that bought Special Edition and any add-ons.
- Use that account when checking the PS5 version and Anniversary upgrade.
- Do not buy a second copy merely because another local profile cannot see the entitlement.
- If a product page asks you to upgrade, compare the signed-in account with the account shown on the original purchase receipt.
The transfer guidance is general rather than a Skyrim-specific inventory of every add-on. For a missing item, the safest first check is the purchasing account and its transaction history; only then should you contact platform or Bethesda support.
Why a profile may be prompted to buy Anniversary Edition
Bethesda documents a specific PlayStation scenario: one profile owns Anniversary Edition, but another profile launches Skyrim and is prompted to upgrade. The prompt does not prove that the console lacks the purchase. It may simply reflect that the launching profile did not buy Anniversary Edition.
- Exit Skyrim and note which PlayStation profile is active.
- Switch to the profile that actually purchased Anniversary Edition.
- Open the Skyrim product page or game hub and verify that the Anniversary entitlement is shown there.
- Launch the game from the purchasing profile to test the entitlement before spending money again.
If the purchasing profile cannot see the upgrade either, check the original receipt and region. Store listings and account entitlements are regional, and a console can contain profiles with different purchase histories.

Choose the right edition by what you want to do
You already own Special Edition and want better PS5 performance
Do not buy Anniversary Edition solely for this purpose. Follow the free next-generation upgrade path tied to your Special Edition ownership. Digital owners should use the purchasing account; disc owners should insert the PS4 disc and retain it for play.
You want the Creation Club additions
Buy the Anniversary Edition upgrade after confirming that the account purchasing it owns Special Edition. This is the case where paying for Anniversary makes sense: you are purchasing additional content, not unlocking the basic PS5 optimization.
You own a physical copy and are deciding between editions
Keep the Special Edition disc as your base-game route. You can use it for the free PS5 upgrade and separately buy Anniversary Edition if you decide the Creation Club bundle is worth having. A disc purchase should not be described as including Anniversary content unless the listing explicitly says so.
You are starting from scratch
Choose a digital or physical Special Edition entitlement that works with your PS5 setup. If you use a physical copy, your console needs a disc drive and you must keep the disc for every play session. Add Anniversary only if its extra content is part of your plan. Prices, bundle names and regional availability are not fixed, so check the current PlayStation store page in your region.

Troubleshooting upgrade and DLC problems
The PS5 upgrade is not shown
- Confirm that the base game is Special Edition, not an older Skyrim release.
- Sign in with the account that purchased the digital game.
- For a disc copy, insert the PS4 Special Edition disc before opening the game hub.
- Check the product page for a separate PS5 version rather than selecting only the PS4 download.
The game asks for the disc after installation
That behavior is expected for the physical route. Bethesda’s upgrade guidance says the disc remains required to play, so reinstalling the game or downloading the PS5 version does not remove that requirement.
Another profile owns Anniversary but yours shows a purchase prompt
Switch to the profile that bought Anniversary Edition and verify the entitlement there. Bethesda specifically warns that a non-purchasing profile may be prompted even when another profile on the same PlayStation owns the upgrade. Check the purchasing account before paying again.
Purchased DLC is missing on PS5
Check that the account signed in is the same platform account that purchased the DLC. Bethesda’s transfer statement uses that account condition for eligible digital content. If the correct account is active and the item still does not appear, use the transaction record and the relevant support channel to resolve the account entitlement.
The number of Creations does not match an older description
Creation Club inventories can change. The figures Bethesda published—74 Creations, 48 available and 26 planned, with more than 500 individual elements—are not a dated, permanent catalog. Treat the current store description as the authority for what is offered when you purchase.
What you should buy
For most PS5 players who already own Skyrim Special Edition, the answer is simple: use the free PS5-generation upgrade and buy nothing else unless you specifically want Anniversary Edition’s Creation Club content. Physical owners should plan around the disc requirement, while digital owners should keep the purchasing PSN account in control of the upgrade and DLC checks.
Anniversary Edition is therefore an optional content expansion, not a prerequisite for the PS5 version. Verify the edition, copy type and purchasing account before checkout, because those three details determine whether you need a download, a disc, an additional purchase or no purchase at all.
