For a simple cordless home phone, compare display and keypad legibility, handset count, and whether you need a built-in answering system. Two manufacturer-listed examples illustrate different priorities: the VTech VG231 has a 2-inch white backlit display, while the AT&T EL51203 is a two-handset system with an extra-large display and big buttons. What to look for in a simple cordless phone
Display and keypad
Prioritize controls you can see and use comfortably. VTech lists the VG231 with a 2-inch white backlit display; AT&T describes the EL51203 as having an extra-large display and big buttons. Those listing descriptions do not establish that a particular screen contrast, key label, or menu layout will suit every user. Inspect product images or an in-store unit when possible.
Handset count
Choose a bundle based on the rooms where you expect to answer calls. A second handset can make a phone available in another room, but each handset also means another charging location. VTech’s US catalog lists VG231 configurations with two, three, four, or five handsets; the AT&T EL51203 is specifically a two-handset system.
Answering system and calling features
A built-in answering system records messages through the phone system. Caller ID displays information supplied by the phone service; caller ID and call waiting are separate service-related functions. Features vary by model, so check the listing and manual for any service requirements before relying on them. VTech’s VG232 variants include a digital answering system and message counter, while the VG231 and EL51203 listings identify caller ID/call waiting. VTech also lists a full-duplex speakerphone on the VG231.
