The right Shure microphone depends on how you’ll connect it and what you’ll record. Choose the MV7+ for USB-C recording with an XLR option and app-based controls, the SM7B for mounted studio or broadcast-style use with an XLR chain, or the handheld SM58 for live vocals and sound reinforcement. Shure’s product information supports these use cases and specifications; it does not establish an independently tested overall sound-quality winner.

Shure microphone picks at a glance

Model Best fit Connection and format Key setup consideration
MV7+ Close-talk podcasting or streaming, especially when you want USB-C and an XLR option USB-C and passive XLR; mounted dynamic cardioid microphone USB-C recording can use Shure MOTIV software features; the XLR output does not carry those software settings.
SM7B Mounted speech or music recording, including studio and broadcast-style applications XLR-only; dynamic cardioid microphone Shure says to expect to need at least 60 dB of clean preamp gain.
SM58 Handheld singing, speech, and live sound reinforcement Three-pin XLR; handheld dynamic cardioid vocal microphone Requires an XLR cable and a compatible XLR input.

These are choices by workflow and form factor, not a direct sound-quality ranking. The specifications and intended uses below come from Shure’s MV7+ product information, its SM7B product information, and its SM58 product information.

Which Shure mic is best for podcasting?

Choose the MV7+ for USB-C-first recording

The MV7+ is a dynamic cardioid microphone designed for close-talk applications such as podcasting and streaming. It provides USB-C and passive XLR outputs, plus a 3.5 mm headphone output. That makes it a practical fit if you want to record over USB-C now but keep an XLR connection available for a suitable recording chain later.

Shure lists a 50 Hz–16 kHz frequency response and USB-C recording up to 24-bit/48 kHz; for iOS, it lists a 16-bit/44.1 kHz mode. Its MOTIV software includes Auto Level, a real-time denoiser, Digital Popper Stopper, tone control, reverb, compressor, limiter, and high-pass filter. These are configurable processing tools, not a guarantee that unwanted room noise will disappear. Check Shure’s current product information and software requirements for compatibility with your device and operating system.

The software settings apply to the digital USB-C signal. The XLR output is passive, so it does not carry the MV7+’s software processing.

When the SM7B makes more sense

The SM7B suits a podcast setup built around an XLR interface or mixer, particularly if you also want a microphone Shure positions for music and other speech applications. It is a mounted cardioid dynamic microphone with a published 50 Hz–20 kHz frequency response. It is not a USB microphone: plan for an XLR cable and an XLR input with an appropriate preamp.

Shure SM58S Pro XLR Dynamic Vocal Microphone with On/Off Switch
  • ICONIC VOCAL SOUND: Designed specifically for vocals, the SM58S delivers clear, warm, and present sound with a tuned frequency response that helps singers and speakers cut through the mix on stage, in rehearsal spaces, and during studio recording.
  • THE INDUSTRY’S GO-TO STAGE MIC: A trusted choice for performers, venues, and sound engineers worldwide, this dynamic vocal microphone is built for live concerts, touring, clubs, and houses of worship where consistent, reliable performance matters.
  • FOCUSED CARDIOID PICKUP: The cardioid polar pattern of our wireless microphone captures sound directly from the front while rejecting off-axis noise, helping isolate vocals from instruments, monitors, and crowd noise in loud live performance environments.
  • BUILT FOR REAL-WORLD PERFORMANCE: A hardened grille and internal filtering help reduce plosives, breath noise, and handling sounds, keeping vocals clean and controlled during energetic performances and close-mic use.
  • ON/OFF SWITCH FOR EASY CONTROL: The integrated on/off switch allows quick muting between songs or speakers without unplugging from a mixer or PA system, making it ideal for live vocals, presentations, and rehearsal setups.

Before choosing it, check your preamp’s available clean gain. Shure’s comparison guidance says SM7B users should expect to need at least 60 dB of clean preamp gain; that is the manufacturer’s guidance, not an independent measurement of every interface. See Shure Support for the relevant setup guidance.

Is the SM58 the right Shure mic for live vocals?

The SM58 is the clearest fit among these three when you want a handheld XLR microphone for singing, speech, or live sound reinforcement. Shure describes it for professional vocal use in sound reinforcement and studio recording. It has a cardioid dynamic design, a three-pin XLR connector, and a published 50 Hz–15 kHz frequency response. Its built-in spherical filter is intended to reduce wind and breath pops.

Unlike the MV7+ and SM7B, the SM58 is designed to be held rather than positioned as a close-talk desk microphone. For a live setup, make sure the cable and mixer or other audio input accept its XLR connection. Shure’s SM58 product page describes its intended use and specifications.

What else do you need to connect an XLR Shure microphone?

  • An XLR cable and XLR input: The SM7B and SM58 use XLR. The MV7+ also has XLR, but its XLR output is passive.
  • A suitable preamp or interface: Verify that the input provides appropriate gain for your microphone and recording needs. Shure’s 60 dB guidance is specific to the SM7B, not a universal requirement for all microphones.
  • A stand or boom arm when fixed placement is needed: A mounted close-talk setup can help keep the microphone positioned consistently, but a stand is not mandatory for every use.

Shure says the SM7B, SM7dB, MV7, MV7+, and MV7i are configured for 5/8-inch–27 microphone-stand threads and include an adapter for 3/8-inch–16 mounts. The SM7B’s nearby XLR connector can affect clearance, so check that the connector and cable fit the stand or mount you plan to use. See Shure’s support guidance on microphone mounting before buying a mount.

How to make the choice

  1. Start with how you record. For direct USB-C recording and app features, consider the MV7+. For an XLR studio chain, consider the SM7B for mounted recording or the SM58 for handheld vocals.
  2. Check the rest of the signal chain. Confirm that your computer, interface, mixer, cable, and preamp match the connection you intend to use. For the SM7B, compare your preamp’s clean-gain capability with Shure’s 60 dB guidance.
  3. Check placement and mounting. Decide whether you need a handheld mic or a fixed close-talk position, then verify thread size and cable clearance for any stand or boom arm.
  4. For the MV7+, confirm software compatibility. Review Shure’s current MOTIV requirements for your operating system and device if you plan to use the app features.
