The Shark PowerDetect Cordless is TechRadar’s best all-round Shark vacuum pick, but it is not the right fit for every home: it is relatively heavy and bulky for a stick vacuum. Choose by cleaning job first: consider the PowerDetect Upright for corded deep cleaning, the PowerDetect Robot for routine maintenance with less intervention, or a lighter handheld for small jobs. The specifications and recommendations below are those published by TechRadar in its guide updated 24 August 2026; they are not independent test results.
How to choose the best Shark vacuum for you
Start with the format that suits your home and how you clean. A cordless stick is easier to carry and maneuver than a bulky upright, while a corded upright can suit deep cleaning if you do not mind plugging in. A robot can take on regular maintenance, but TechRadar says robot vacuums are less effective at deep cleaning. Handheld models are for smaller jobs, not whole-home cleaning.
Then weigh carpet and pet-hair needs against handling, bin capacity, runtime and automation. A bigger bin can mean fewer interruptions to empty it; a longer advertised runtime does not guarantee that the vacuum will last as long on its most powerful setting. TechRadar says its reviewers time cordless runtime in each mode and compare it with manufacturer claims.
PowerDetect Cordless: the all-round pick
TechRadar recommends the Shark PowerDetect Cordless as its best overall model, citing its cleaning and automation. It weighs 8.4 lb (3.8 kg), has a 0.7 L bin and is advertised for up to 70 minutes of runtime; TechRadar recorded 67 minutes in its test. It is a strong candidate for buyers who want a versatile cordless stick, but its weight, chunky build and price are meaningful trade-offs. An optional auto-empty base may appeal if you want less frequent bin emptying; check that the base matches the exact vacuum variant.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL UPRIGHT VACUUM CLEANER: DuoClean PowerFins Technology combines two brushrolls—a PowerFins and soft roller—for nonstop contact to deep clean carpets and area rugs, directly engage hard floors, and pick up more debris in every pass (vs. original DuoClean)
- LIFT-AWAY ABOVE-FLOOR CLEANING: Step on the easy-release pedal to detach the lightweight Lift-Away pod for portable cleaning on stairs, furniture, baseboards, ceilings, and other above-floor areas
- SELF-CLEANING BRUSHROLL: Delivers powerful pet hair pickup with no hair wrap, continuously removing hair from the brushroll as you clean carpets and hard floors—ideal for homes with pets
- HEPA FILTRATION & ANTI-ALLERGEN SEAL: The HEPA filter and Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology trap 99.9% of dust and allergens inside the vacuum cleaner for whole-home cleaning—great for allergy-prone households
- PERFECT FOR PETS: The Pet Power Brush tackles stubborn pet hair on stairs and upholstery, while the Upholstery Tool removes embedded hair and debris from furniture and other fabric surfaces
Stratos Cordless: consider it if the price is lower
The Stratos is an older, less powerful and less automated cordless stick than the PowerDetect Cordless. It weighs 8.6 lb (3.9 kg), has a 0.7 L bin and is rated for up to 60 minutes. TechRadar says it can suit carpet and pet hair if discounted enough. Its weight is similar to the PowerDetect Cordless, so it is not the lighter-handling alternative.
PowerDetect Upright: for corded deep cleaning
If you prioritize power and deep cleaning and can work around a cord, the PowerDetect Upright is the more relevant choice. It weighs 17.6 lb (8 kg) and has a 1.3 L bin; runtime is unlimited while it is plugged in. TechRadar favors it for deep cleaning but notes that it is heavy and bulky, which can make carrying and maneuvering it harder.
Rank #2
- SELF-CLEANING BRUSHROLL: Engineered for more pet hair pickup with no hair wrap (vs. Shark bristle nozzles)..Voltage:120 volts. Wattage : 1200 watts
- LIFT-AWAY FUNCTIONALITY: Detachable pod for cleaning under furniture or detach the nozzle to clean above the floor, on upholstery, furniture, stairs, and more.
- ANTI-ALLERGEN COMPLETE SEAL TECHNOLOGY: Works with a HEPA filter to trap dust and allergens inside the vacuum cleaner.
- PERFECT FOR PETS: The Pet Crevice Tool removes pet hair from hard-to-reach spaces like corners, ceilings, and between couch cushions.
- SWIVEL STEERING: Easily maneuver your vacuum to get in and out of tight spaces, in corners, around furniture, and more.
PowerDetect Speed: lighter than the all-round pick, with a small bin
The PowerDetect Speed weighs 7 lb (3.2 kg), has a 0.4 L bin and adds a display and auto-empty dock. Its runtime is up to 60 minutes in Eco mode, but TechRadar reports only 10–15 minutes in maximum-power mode. That gap matters if your floors need stronger suction for much of a cleaning session; its smaller bin also means less capacity than the 0.7 L PowerDetect Cordless.
Detect Pro Cordless: prioritize low weight over capacity
At 6 lb (2.76 kg), the Detect Pro is the lightest stick among the models listed here. It has a 0.4 L bin and a maximum runtime listed as 40 minutes in the US and 60 minutes in the UK. TechRadar describes it as light and nimble but less powerful, with a small bin, and says it may be phased out. The guide’s recommendation is best suited to quieter homes without shedding pets. Check local availability and variant details before buying; an auto-empty dock is optional only for eligible variants.

- PERFECT FOR PETS: The Pet Power Brush tackles stubborn pet hair on stairs and upholstery, while the Upholstery Tool removes embedded hair and debris from furniture and other fabric surfaces
PowerDetect Robot: for routine cleaning with less intervention
TechRadar recommends the PowerDetect Robot for people who want routine cleaning with less effort. A robot is a different proposition from a stick or upright: it can maintain floors between hands-on cleans, but TechRadar cautions that robot vacuums are less effective at deep cleaning. The guide does not provide a weight, bin capacity or runtime figure for this model in its summary, so compare the exact regional model listing for those details.
Freestyle Max: a lightweight cordless upright
The Freestyle Max weighs 6.6 lb (3 kg) and has a 0.7 L bin. TechRadar’s article summary lists 21 minutes of runtime. The guide describes it as light and effective on debris and pet hair, but says it has no detail tools and its runtime falls sharply on the higher-suction setting. It may fit straightforward floor cleaning better than jobs that need above-floor attachments or extended high-power use.
Rank #4
- ULTRA-POWERFUL SUCTION: The Shark Vertex delivers ultra-powerful suction and innovative cleaning technology for deep cleaning on carpets, area rugs, and hard floors throughout your home.
- MULTI-SURFACE CLEANING: DuoClean PowerFins combines a PowerFins brushroll and soft roller to dig deep into carpets, directly engage hard floors, and pick up more dirt, debris, and pet hair in every pass (vs. original DuoClean).
- POWERED LIFT-AWAY: Detach the pod for motorized cleaning under furniture, or detach the nozzle to clean stairs, upholstery, furniture, and other above-floor surfaces using the included Dusting Brush for delicate surfaces.
- PERFECT FOR PETS: Includes a Pet Crevice Tool to remove embedded pet hair from stairs, furniture, corners, ceilings, and between couch cushions.
- SELF-CLEANING BRUSHROLL: Engineered for more pet hair pickup with no hair wrap (vs. Shark bristle nozzles), making this upright vacuum ideal for homes with pets and long hair.
UltraCyclone Pet Pro Plus: for handheld and car-cleaning jobs
This handheld weighs 3 lb (1.39 kg), has a 0.45 L bin and a 15-minute runtime. TechRadar recommends it for handheld work and cleaning cars. The guide notes that fine dust may require repeated passes and that its battery is not swappable. It is not a substitute for a full-size vacuum if you need to clean whole rooms.
Recommended Free Tools
WandVac System: a small-task handheld with a floor attachment
The WandVac System weighs 5.9 lb (3 kg), has a 0.25 L bin and a 16-minute runtime. Its floor attachment gives it more flexibility than a handheld alone, but TechRadar presents it as a lightweight option for small tasks rather than whole-home cleaning. Its small bin and short runtime reinforce that limited role.

What TechRadar’s vacuum tests cover
TechRadar says its standardized tests use loose tea for fine particles, oats or dry rice for larger debris, and pet hair on mid-pile carpet, deep-pile carpet and vinyl. Reviewers also assess human-hair handling, edge cleaning, automation, maneuverability, comfort and detail tools. For cordless vacuums, they time runtime in each mode and compare it with manufacturer claims. The guide says some models were compared directly in a group test against other leading vacuum brands; that describes TechRadar’s process, not a test conducted for this article.
Check price, stock and regional variants before choosing
TechRadar cautions that Shark deals are common, so list prices can be misleading. Its guide does not establish current prices, stock or regional availability. Check the exact model and variant sold where you live, especially for region-dependent runtime listings and optional docks. Confirm a dock’s compatibility with the precise vacuum variant rather than assuming that every model with a similar name uses the same accessory.
