After a major ColorOS upgrade, do not assume that every preference was reset—or that every preference survived unchanged. First record your phone model and installed ColorOS version, then verify the settings that affect privacy, notifications, battery, security, connectivity and daily use. Menus and features vary by model, region, carrier and software version, so treat the paths below as checks rather than a universal map.
Start with your exact ColorOS version and phone model
Open Settings and use the search box for ColorOS version, Android version or About device. The wording and location differ between handsets, but the About-device screen normally identifies the installed ColorOS build and model number. Write both down before troubleshooting. Include them if you contact OPPO support or ask for help, because an instruction that is correct for ColorOS 14 on one model may not match ColorOS 15, a carrier edition or another region.
OPPO describes its ColorOS 15 rollout schedule as approximate and subject to the device model, region and carrier. Product pages are reference information, not a promise that every listed feature is present on every phone. A major update can also leave a setting intact while changing the way the setting is labeled or grouped. Verify the result on your own device instead of trying to force your menus to match a screenshot.
Use this post-update verification checklist

Only change an item when it is wrong for you. The purpose is to confirm the behavior you want, not to reset every preference or disable protections.

Review app permissions and privacy first
Inspect permissions app by app
For the ColorOS 14 path documented by OPPO India, open Settings > Apps > App Management, choose an app, then select Permissions. Review at least these categories:
- Camera: keep access only for apps that scan, take photos, make video calls or otherwise need the camera.
- Microphone: check messaging, recording, calling and voice-assistant apps.
- Location: distinguish between access while using the app, limited background access and no access, where your version offers those choices.
- Photos and videos: confirm which apps can view or select media. Newer Android-based releases may offer a choice of selected items rather than the entire library.
ColorOS 14 guidance includes an Ask every time choice for listed permissions. Use it when you want a prompt instead of permanent access, provided the extra prompts do not break a task you rely on. If an option is absent, do not assume it was removed; the available choices depend on the Android and ColorOS build.
Check privacy controls without mixing version labels
Older ColorOS 12 material describes a Privacy Dashboard and separate microphone and camera toggles. ColorOS 14 guidance emphasizes the app-specific permission path above. These are examples from different releases, not a guaranteed sequence of screens on your phone. Search Settings for Privacy, Permission manager, Camera access and Microphone access to find the controls your build actually exposes.

Test the permission change
- Open the app’s Permissions screen and note its current status before changing anything.
- Choose the least access that still supports the app’s purpose.
- Open the app and perform a real action, such as taking a picture, recording audio or selecting one photo.
- If the action fails, return to the same screen and grant the narrower permission the app requires. Avoid granting unrelated access as a workaround.
OPPO’s ColorOS 14 material also describes Auto Pixelate for obscuring profile pictures and names in screenshots or shared conversations. If that feature is available on your model, decide whether its privacy protection fits your sharing workflow and test one screenshot before relying on it.

Fix notification and background behavior before blaming the update
Confirm app notifications
Check an important app from Settings > Apps > App Management; OPPO places notification management there in its ColorOS 14 instructions. Select the app and look for Notifications. Confirm that the main notification switch is on and that the categories you care about—messages, calls, reminders or security alerts—are enabled. Some apps expose separate channel controls, so an enabled main switch does not guarantee that every category is audible.
Then check how alerts appear on the lock screen. Verify sound or vibration, status-bar icons, badges and whether message content is hidden until the phone is unlocked. These settings may be under Notifications, Sound and vibration or Lock screen depending on the build. Search Settings if the labels differ.
Check background syncing
Open the app after the update and trigger a harmless test: send a message to the account, create a short calendar event or use another device to generate an alert. Lock the phone, wait a few minutes and see whether the notification arrives. If it does not, inspect the app’s battery and background settings before reinstalling it. A notification problem can come from a disabled category, a background restriction, an account sync setting or the app itself.

- Confirm the app’s notification categories and lock-screen visibility.
- Check that the account is still signed in and synchronization is enabled inside the app.
- Review per-app battery or background restrictions; do not disable every battery safeguard globally.
- Restart the phone and repeat the test.
- Update the affected app from its official app store if its developer has released a compatibility fix.
Record which app, account and ColorOS build fail. That information is more useful to support than saying that notifications are “broken” in general.

Review battery, charging and app activity
Check the Battery page before changing limits
Open Settings > Battery. Available controls can include Power saving mode and Smart charging. Smart charging may delay a full charge or otherwise adapt charging behavior; read the description shown on your phone before enabling it so you know what behavior to expect.
Look at battery use by app over a normal period first. OPPO documents battery-use management under App management, but it does not prescribe one restriction setting for every user. A navigation, messaging or wearable-companion app may need background activity, while a rarely used game may not. Apply restrictions to the specific app that is consuming power, then test notifications and synchronization again.
Decide whether Power saving is appropriate
- Use Power saving when you need longer runtime and accept that some background work, animation or performance may be reduced.
- Leave it off during troubleshooting if you are trying to determine whether normal notifications and syncing work.
- Check for a schedule or automatic trigger so the phone does not unexpectedly enter the mode at a time you need full performance.
Interpret storage changes carefully
OPPO Labs reported up to 21 GB of ROM Vitalization on a 256 GB test model in ColorOS 14 product material from 2023/2024. OPPO qualifies that result as lab-dependent and variable by model and conditions. It is not a promise that your phone will gain 21 GB after updating. If free storage looks different, compare the same storage categories before deleting files, and remember that an update may rebuild caches or optimize system data temporarily.
Verify lock-screen and theft-protection settings
Open the security or lock-screen section and confirm that your PIN, password or pattern still works. Test fingerprint and face unlock if you use them; a major update can require the primary PIN or password once before biometrics work again. Check whether notification details are visible while locked and whether shortcuts or wallet controls are available from the lock screen.

ColorOS 15’s official page describes a theft detection lock feature that can lock the screen if it detects that someone has taken the device and run away. OPPO also says detection varies by situation, cannot guarantee 100% effectiveness and requires you to enable the feature. Treat it as an additional safeguard, not a replacement for a strong screen lock, device tracking, backups or safe handling of the phone.
Do not turn off security controls merely because a menu moved. If a feature is missing, search Settings for theft, protection, screen lock or Find My Device, then confirm that the option is supported on your model and in your region.

Default apps and links
Open Settings search and look for default apps. Verify the browser, phone, messaging, assistant, home app and link-handling choices you rely on. Test a web link, a phone number and an email address from another app. If the phone asks again, select the intended app only after confirming that it is installed and compatible with the current Android version.

- Check brightness, dark or light mode, refresh-rate selection, screen timeout and auto-rotate.
- Confirm text size, display size, color mode and any eye-comfort or night-light schedule.
- Inspect the home-screen layout, icon size, app drawer choice, widgets and gesture or button navigation.
These preferences often remain unchanged, but a launcher or display component can update independently. Test readability in bright and dim conditions rather than judging from the Settings preview.

Sound and connectivity
Play a short media clip, make a call and connect a Bluetooth accessory. Verify media, ringtone, alarm and notification volumes separately, along with vibration and Do Not Disturb schedules. Recheck Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth, NFC and hotspot behavior. If a saved network or accessory disappeared, reconnect it using the normal pairing process; avoid a full network reset unless ordinary reconnection fails because a reset removes saved networks and related preferences.
Accessibility
Check TalkBack or other screen-reader settings, magnification, captions, hearing-device support, color correction, high contrast, touch-and-hold timing and switch access if you use them. A small change in animation, gesture navigation or text scaling can make the phone feel broken when the accessibility preference is simply different. Test with the person who relies on the feature, not only with the account owner performing the update.
What to do when a menu does not match
- Confirm the ColorOS and Android versions and the exact handset model.
- Use the Settings search field with the function name rather than the old menu path—for example, permissions, notification, smart charging or default apps.
- Check whether the control is inside the selected app’s own settings instead of the system Settings app.
- Look for a carrier or regional variation, especially when a feature appears in ColorOS marketing but not on your phone.
- Consult OPPO support for the exact model and region before resetting preferences or performing a factory reset.
Do not combine ColorOS 12 labels, ColorOS 14 paths and ColorOS 15 features into one assumed menu map. The safest instruction is the one that matches the build displayed on your device.

Once you have checked only the settings relevant to you, run a short end-to-end test:
- Lock and unlock the phone with your normal method.
- Connect to your usual Wi-Fi and Bluetooth accessory.
- Open a camera app, record a few seconds of audio and select one photo to confirm permissions.
- Send or receive a test message and wait for a notification while the screen is off.
- Make a brief call, play media and verify the expected volume and vibration behavior.
- Check battery use later that day rather than drawing conclusions immediately after the update.
If one test fails, change the smallest relevant setting, repeat that test and note the result. This avoids weakening privacy, battery or security protections across the entire phone to fix one app.
