Configure an infrastructure agent as a constrained production identity, not as a general-purpose administrator. Before it can act, assign an owner, define permitted workflows, give it only the API permissions and destinations it needs, make read-only behavior the default, and put human approval in front of destructive, irreversible, high-impact, or costly changes. Add hard limits for steps, time, retries, concurrency, tokens, API use, and cloud spend; isolate memory, secrets, tools, and network egress; inspect prompts and tool responses; record an immutable audit trail; test in simulation or dry-run mode; and launch gradually with pause, override, and rollback procedures.
Start with a deployment boundary, not a model choice
An AI agent that can inspect servers, change infrastructure, or call operational APIs is part of your control plane. Its identity, permissions, tools, memory, network path, and approval workflow are security boundaries. Treat the first release as a narrowly scoped automation service and expand its authority only after it passes tests and monitored operation.
The safest starting point is a read-only workflow such as inventory, health summarization, or log triage. A write-capable agent should have a clearly defined task, an explicit owner, measurable success criteria, named escalation contacts, retention rules, and a person authorized to approve the deployment. OpenAI’s managed-agent guidance describes this sequence as defining outcomes, connecting systems, encoding policies and permissions, completing security, privacy, and legal review, then using controlled rollout and rollback.

1. Establish ownership, scope, and accountability
Name both business and technical owners
The business owner decides why the agent exists and what outcome justifies its risk. The technical owner is responsible for identity, integrations, limits, monitoring, and incident response. Record both names, an escalation path, and the person who can pause or disable the agent.

Define permitted workflows
Write the allowed tasks as bounded workflows rather than a vague objective such as “keep production healthy.” Specify the systems it may inspect, the changes it may propose or execute, the environments covered, and the conditions that end a run. Separate development, staging, and production scope. A workflow that can restart a test service should not automatically inherit permission to restart a production database.
Set success and failure criteria
For each workflow, define a measurable completion condition, a maximum duration, and failure behavior. Decide which failures require escalation, which can be retried, and which must stop immediately. Include retention requirements for prompts, tool results, traces, approvals, and incident records before launch.
Complete review before granting write access
Security, privacy, legal, and operations reviewers should see the proposed data flows, permissions, destinations, and approval gates. The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s guidance, published 1 May 2026, calls for a security-first approach across the design, deployment, and operation of agentic AI. That review is especially important when the agent can transfer data, alter credentials, incur spend, or affect physical or regulated systems.

Use one workload identity per agent
Do not run several agents under a shared administrator account. Give each agent its own workload identity so actions can be attributed, permissions can be tuned independently, and a compromised agent can be disabled without taking unrelated automation offline.
Grant the smallest possible permission set
Enumerate the exact API verbs, resources, namespaces, and destinations required by each workflow. Kubernetes describes authentication, authorization checks, and RBAC as the first line of defense for an API-driven cluster. Its RBAC guidance recommends minimal rights, namespace scope where possible, and periodic review for privilege escalation.
For example, an inventory agent may need list and get access to selected resources but no create, update, patch, delete, or exec capability. A remediation agent might receive one narrowly scoped write operation for one resource type, while all other changes remain approval-only. Avoid broad wildcard permissions when a named resource or namespace will work.
Prefer short-lived or delegated credentials
Use short-lived credentials or on-behalf-of authorization instead of embedding long-lived secrets in the agent configuration. Recheck authorization for every action, not only when a session starts. This prevents a permission that was revoked during a run from remaining effective until the agent exits.

Review identity drift
Schedule periodic access recertification. Alert when roles, bindings, service accounts, destinations, or policy boundaries change unexpectedly. Google’s guidance recommends workload-bound identities, per-agent IAM, and principal access boundaries; those controls make privilege changes attributable and reviewable.
3. Allowlist tools, APIs, and destinations
Register every callable extension
Maintain an inventory of approved tools, MCP servers, APIs, and endpoints. Deny unregistered destinations by default. Review an extension’s requested permissions before enabling it, including permissions that appear unrelated to the agent’s primary task.
Apply a governed onboarding sequence
A practical sequence from Google’s governed-agent guidance is:
- Provision the agent’s workload identity.
- Register the destinations it is allowed to reach.
- Configure IAM policies for each destination and operation.
- Apply content-security templates for prompt injection and sensitive-data controls.
Keep the allowlist separate from the agent’s natural-language instructions. A prompt saying “use any available diagnostic service” must not expand the network or tool boundary.
Control tool arguments and results
Allowlisting a tool is not enough if every argument is accepted. Constrain resource identifiers, namespaces, regions, file paths, query ranges, and output sizes to the workflow’s scope. Inspect tool responses before they are placed into the model context. A seemingly helpful response can contain an instruction designed to redirect the agent, reveal a secret, or invoke an unapproved action.
4. Make autonomy and approvals explicit
Set read-only as the default operating mode. Separate actions the agent may perform automatically from actions it may only suggest and actions that require an identified human approver.
| Action category | Recommended setting | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Observation and analysis | Permit automatically within the identity and data scope | Inventory, health checks, log classification, and status summaries |
| Reversible, low-impact change | Permit only when the workflow, target, and recovery path are explicitly bounded | A narrowly scoped service restart with a tested recovery procedure |
| Production write | Require explicit human approval before execution | Changing infrastructure configuration or deploying a new version |
| Destructive or irreversible operation | Require approval and a recorded authorization decision | Deletion, data alteration, or removal of a critical resource |
| Credential or access change | Require approval; recheck authorization immediately before execution | Changing roles, keys, service accounts, or policy bindings |
| Transfer, legal, economic, or physical impact | Require approval with the intended consequence shown to the approver | Moving data, incurring material spend, or affecting physical systems |
Google states that critical or consequential actions should have explicit approval. Microsoft likewise assigns the customer responsibility for action authorization and human oversight. The approval record should identify the proposed operation, target, expected effect, requesting agent, approver, timestamp, and final result.

Do not confuse confidence with authorization
A model’s confidence score, a successful dry run, or a previous history of correct actions is not permission. Authorization comes from the configured identity, policy, and approval decision. Keep those controls outside the model’s own reasoning.
5. Set execution, loop, and cost limits
Runaway planning can consume resources even when every individual tool call looks valid. Configure hard ceilings before enabling autonomous execution.
| Limit | What it contains | Required behavior at the ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum steps or iterations | Repeated planning and tool calls | Stop the run and report the incomplete workflow |
| Wall-clock timeout | Agents waiting indefinitely on slow or unavailable services | Cancel outstanding work and escalate |
| Concurrency limit | Parallel actions that overload a service or broaden impact | Queue, reject, or stop additional actions |
| Retry count | Repeated failures that amplify an outage | Stop retries and preserve the error context |
| Token and API budget | Unexpected model or service consumption | End the run before the budget is exceeded |
| Cloud-spend ceiling | Financial exposure from provisioning or scaling | Require approval or halt the operation |
Microsoft identifies unbounded loops, resource exhaustion, and runaway planning as risks and recommends step, iteration, and budget limits. Detect policy violations as well as numerical limits: an agent that reaches a valid API call through an unauthorized plan should stop immediately.
6. Protect data, memory, secrets, and network egress
Classify what the agent may access
Define whether the agent can read production logs, customer data, credentials metadata, source code, incident records, or regulated information. Grant access only to the classes needed for the workflow. Decide what may be written to memory and how long it is retained.
Isolate memory between tenants and workflows
Do not let one tenant, customer, environment, or unrelated workflow retrieve another’s context. Preserve provenance for remembered facts so an operator can see where a value came from and when it was accepted. Include defenses against memory poisoning: untrusted content should not silently become durable instruction or policy.
Keep secrets out of prompts and logs
Use a controlled secret mechanism rather than placing keys in system prompts, user messages, tool arguments, traces, or error output. Redact sensitive values before persistence and restrict who can view the resulting records.
Restrict outbound network paths
Allow only the egress destinations required by the registered tools. Microsoft states that customers remain accountable for data, memory isolation, poisoning defense, tool sandboxing, and egress control. Google recommends content-inspection templates for prompt injections, jailbreaks, and sensitive-data leaks. Inspect both inbound instructions and outbound tool responses, because malicious content can enter through either path.

7. Harden the Kubernetes and infrastructure layer
When an agent operates a Kubernetes environment, combine agent-level controls with cluster security:
- Use TLS for API traffic.
- Enforce authentication and RBAC with minimal, preferably namespace-scoped permissions.
- Enable Pod Security Admission with an appropriate restricted posture.
- Apply node restrictions so workloads cannot obtain broader host access than intended.
- Use restricted instance credentials.
- Apply network policies to constrain pod-to-pod and external communication.
- Protect the metadata API from unintended access.
Kubernetes emphasizes that controlling who can access the cluster and what actions they may perform is the first line of defense. These controls reduce the blast radius if the model is manipulated or an integration is compromised; they do not replace the agent’s approval and budget policies.

Capture the complete execution record
For each run, record:
- Agent identity and workload version.
- Prompt or input provenance, including the source of supplied documents or events.
- Model and policy version.
- Selected tool, destination, and arguments.
- Authorization result and any human approval.
- Tool result, final outcome, latency, retries, and cost.
Use immutable or tamper-evident storage for audit records and set retention to meet your operational, legal, and privacy requirements. Export traces and alerts to the existing operations and security systems instead of creating an isolated monitoring island.
Monitor the control plane as well as outputs
Google calls for comprehensive tracing of actions and execution paths. Australian guidance recommends monitoring internal operations and auditing identity and privilege changes. Alert on unusual tool selection, new destinations, permission changes, impersonation indicators, sudden increases in retries or spend, and actions outside the declared workflow—not only on an incorrect final answer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Test in simulation and dry-run modes
Build an acceptance suite
Before production access, test routine tasks and deliberately hostile or abnormal cases:
- Valid requests within the permitted scope.
- Requests for denied resources, verbs, namespaces, or destinations.
- Prompt-injection and jailbreak attempts in user input, documents, logs, and tool results.
- Unavailable APIs, timeouts, partial failures, and conflicting signals.
- Exhausted step, retry, time, token, and spend budgets.
- Requests that would delete data, change credentials, transfer information, or create material cost.
- Pause, operator override, and rollback procedures.
OpenAI’s guidance recommends simulations, evaluations, controlled rollout, monitoring, and rollback. Where available, use IAM DRY_RUN or an equivalent audit mode to observe authorization decisions before enforcing them. Compare intended decisions with recorded traces and fix policy gaps before enabling writes.

10. Roll out gradually with a tested stop path
Begin with low-risk work
Start with read-only tasks and a small, observable scope. Expand to proposals, then to narrowly bounded reversible actions, only after the agent demonstrates acceptable behavior under normal and edge-case tests. The Australian guidance recommends low-risk initial use, continuous monitoring, and ongoing threat modelling.
Define pause and override mechanisms
Operators need a way to stop new actions, cancel queued work, and prevent retries while preserving the audit record. An override should identify who used it and why. Test the mechanism during an incident drill; an untested stop button is not a reliable control.
Prepare rollback before enabling writes
For every write-capable workflow, document the reversal operation, required permissions, data dependencies, and person authorized to invoke it. Verify rollback in a simulation or staging environment. If a change cannot be safely reversed, keep it approval-only and require a higher level of review.

11. Choose deployment responsibility consciously
Managed and self-hosted deployments should be compared on the same control questions:
- Who provisions and reviews identity and permissions?
- How completely can tools and network destinations be isolated?
- Where are data and memories stored, and how are retention requirements enforced?
- Can traces and audit records be exported to your security and operations systems?
- How are approvals, pauses, and rollback implemented and tested?
- What support exists for evaluations, policy testing, and dry runs?
- Who operates the infrastructure, and what is the ongoing burden?
- Which controls cap model, API, and cloud costs?
Microsoft’s guidance says responsibility shifts toward the customer as autonomy, tool breadth, and infrastructure ownership increase. A managed service may reduce some platform work, but it does not transfer accountability for your data, action authorization, or business impact. Self-hosting can provide deeper control over isolation and residency while making patching, monitoring, identity review, and incident response your responsibility.
12. Operate the agent as a living production system
Schedule recurring reviews
Set calendar-based reviews for access recertification, model and prompt changes, tool additions, destination changes, retention rules, and cost ceilings. Reassess business, legal, privacy, and security obligations when the workflow or environment changes.
Drill incidents and rollback
Exercise scenarios such as a compromised tool response, unexpected privilege expansion, runaway retries, unauthorized egress, and a harmful production change. Confirm that alerts reach the right team, approvals can be revoked, the agent can be paused, and rollback permissions still work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMaintain a central baseline
Microsoft recommends a centralized baseline covering ownership, identity, lifecycle, observability, data governance, security, and development standards. Keep the baseline versioned so a reviewer can determine which policy applied to a historical action.
Pre-production decision checklist
Do not grant production write access until every answer is documented and tested:
