Set up a new gaming laptop in this order: finish Windows and manufacturer updates, learn the laptop maker’s control utility, connect the supplied AC adapter for games, choose an appropriate performance mode, verify the panel’s refresh rate, and assign demanding games to the discrete GPU when one is available. Keep a separate quieter, battery-saving profile for ordinary use. Exact mode names, switching behavior, and display features depend on the model.
A practical first-setup order
The safest setup is a short sequence rather than a universal “best settings” preset. It starts with software and firmware that the manufacturer supports, then moves through power, display, graphics, and optional Windows gaming features.
- Complete updates. Run Windows Update, then use the laptop maker’s own support utility for system, driver, and firmware updates. ASUS, for example, directs owners to Windows Update and MyASUS updates in its gaming guidance: ASUS gaming optimization guidance. Do not replace the maker’s instructions with a generic driver-updater application.
- Identify the maker’s control utility. It is usually where fan behavior, CPU/GPU power limits, graphics switching, and shortcuts are exposed. Read the descriptions for each mode instead of assuming that a button labelled “Turbo” is appropriate all day.
- For a plugged-in gaming session, connect the included AC adapter. Battery operation is a different compromise: the system has less energy available and may select quieter or lower-power behavior.
- Select a gaming-appropriate profile. Use the manufacturer’s Performance, Turbo, or equivalent mode only when its extra power and fan noise suit what you are doing.
- Set Windows’ plugged-in power mode to Best performance when maximum game performance is the priority. Leave a less aggressive choice for battery use.
- Verify the built-in panel’s refresh rate. Select a rate that Windows actually lists for that display; do not assume the advertised maximum is active.
- Assign individual games to High performance when the laptop has integrated and discrete graphics, or select the maker’s supported discrete-GPU mode.
- Test optional features such as windowed-game optimizations, Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR), and HDR one at a time. They depend on the game, Windows version, and panel, so a feature that helps one title can be neutral or undesirable in another.
Finish Windows and manufacturer updates first
Updates can change graphics drivers, firmware, power behavior, and compatibility. Open Settings > Windows Update, install the offered updates, and restart as requested. Then open the laptop maker’s supported application or support page and check for system, chipset, graphics, and firmware packages listed for your exact model.
Use the model-specific instructions for BIOS or firmware. A generic utility cannot know the thermal limits, keyboard controls, display wiring, or graphics-switching design of your machine. If an update requires the AC adapter, connect it before starting and do not interrupt the restart process.

New laptops commonly ship with Windows 11. Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; if a machine is still running Windows 10 in 2026, verify its support and upgrade path before treating it as a current gaming setup. Learn the laptop maker’s performance modes
Control utilities combine several settings—power limits, cooling, acoustic behavior, and sometimes graphics routing—under a profile. The labels are not standardized, so use the descriptions supplied for your model.

Set power differently for AC gaming and battery use
Plugged-in gaming
With the supplied adapter connected, open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose Best performance for the plugged-in power mode when the goal is maximum game performance. Microsoft defines this choice as maximizing performance; Balanced trades performance and battery use, while Best power efficiency favors battery life. The choices and their effects are documented by Microsoft.

Do not leave Best performance and the loudest manufacturer profile enabled simply because the laptop is capable of it. Fan noise, surface temperature, and energy use are legitimate reasons to choose Performance, Balanced, or another maker profile for less demanding games.
Unplugged use
Switch to Balanced or Best power efficiency when browsing, writing, or watching video on battery. Windows lets you maintain separate behavior for plugged-in and battery operation. A lower display refresh rate, hybrid graphics, and an integrated-GPU-only option—when your model provides one—can further reduce demand.
Verify the screen refresh rate
Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Under the refresh-rate control, select a value that is actually listed for the built-in panel. The available values depend on the display; Microsoft explains the procedure and the battery trade-off in its refresh-rate guidance.
A higher supported rate can make motion look smoother in games, while a lower rate can save battery. If Windows offers several rates, start with the highest one you want while plugged in, then test a lower rate for travel or long unplugged sessions.

Be careful with Dynamic Refresh Rate
Windows 11’s Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can change the rate automatically on compatible hardware. Microsoft cautions that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. If a game appears capped or less smooth after DRR is enabled, return to Advanced display, turn DRR off, and retest. DRR is optional and hardware-dependent, not a requirement for gaming.
Choose the right GPU for each game
Many gaming laptops contain an integrated GPU and a more powerful discrete GPU. ASUS states that, when a device has discrete graphics, the discrete GPU has better graphics performance than the integrated GPU. That does not mean it should run every application: the integrated GPU is useful for battery-friendly everyday work.
Set a Windows per-game preference
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the installed game in the app list. If it is missing, use Browse to add the game’s executable.
- Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
- Fully quit and relaunch the game so the preference is applied.
ASUS notes that Windows’ preferred graphics setting can take precedence over a graphics-vendor control-panel preference for some applications. Therefore, check Windows’ per-app choice first when a game is using the wrong GPU. The ASUS explanation is at ASUS Support.

Understand hybrid and discrete-only modes
A manufacturer’s Hybrid mode dynamically switches between GPUs to balance performance and power. A dGPU or discrete-only mode routes graphics-related work to the discrete GPU. In Lenovo’s documented Legion example, changing to dGPU mode requires a restart. That guide also describes an integrated-GPU-only option for casual browsing and word processing. Your laptop may use different names or may not offer a hardware switch, so follow the utility’s instructions rather than forcing a mode through an unsupported method.

Enable windowed-game optimization only when it matches your games
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window mode. Microsoft says the feature can reduce frame latency and enable modern features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Open the setting for Optimizations for windowed games and enable it.
- Restart the game before judging the result.
This does not target every game API or exclusive-fullscreen configuration. If a particular title stutters, changes its color output, or behaves differently, turn the option off for testing and compare the same scene under the same display mode. HDR is a display feature, not a guaranteed performance improvement. Open Settings > System > Display > HDR to see whether the internal panel supports it and to configure Windows HDR options. Turn it on for a game that supports HDR when you prefer the result; leave it off when the game has no HDR mode or the image looks worse.

For that reason, treat HDR as a plugged-in, display-quality choice rather than part of a universal speed preset. Create two profiles instead of chasing one “ultimate” configuration

Switch profiles deliberately. Performance, noise, battery runtime, display smoothness, and switching convenience pull in different directions, and the exact result is laptop-specific. There is no official basis for promising a particular frame-rate gain, battery percentage, or temperature reduction from any one setting.
Troubleshoot the common first-day problems
The game is not using the discrete GPU
- Confirm the game executable—not only its launcher—is listed under Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Set that executable to High performance, save, and restart the game.
- Check whether the manufacturer utility is in Hybrid or integrated-only mode.
- If you changed to a dGPU-only mode, restart when the utility requests it.
The game is capped at an unexpected refresh rate
- Recheck Advanced display and the game’s own display menu.
- If DRR is enabled, turn it off temporarily and retest.
- Confirm that the selected rate is one Windows lists for the internal panel; unsupported values are not available choices.
The laptop is loud or drains quickly
- Verify that Turbo, Performance, Best performance, and dGPU-only mode are not all active during ordinary work.
- Disconnect from the gaming profile when you unplug the AC adapter.
- Use Balanced or Best power efficiency, Hybrid graphics, and a lower refresh rate for battery sessions.
- Remember that higher refresh and HDR can increase display power use; Microsoft specifically identifies lower refresh rates as a battery-saving option and HDR as a possible runtime reduction.
A Windows gaming feature changes the picture or behavior
- Test windowed-game optimization and HDR separately rather than changing both at once.
- Check whether the title is DirectX 10/11 and windowed or borderless before expecting the windowed optimization to apply.
- Disable the feature for that game if its output or latency is worse, then keep the setting that is stable for your display and title.
What cannot be standardized across laptops
Exact BIOS menus, firmware recommendations, profile names, fan curves, graphics-switching hardware, restart requirements, and supported refresh rates vary by model. A setting described in an ASUS utility is not a universal instruction for a Lenovo system, and the Lenovo Legion guide cited above documents one Legion family rather than every gaming laptop. When a control is missing, greyed out, or named differently, use the manual and support page for the exact model instead of installing an unrelated tuning utility.
The order to remember
Update through Windows and the maker’s channel; learn the supported control utility; connect AC power for serious gaming; choose a suitable performance profile and Windows power mode; verify refresh rate; assign games to High performance when appropriate; then test windowed optimization, DRR, and HDR according to the game and display. For battery use, deliberately switch to the quieter, hybrid, lower-refresh configuration rather than leaving the gaming profile active.
