On a new device, do these in order: install operating-system updates, create a strong screen-lock credential, turn on automatic locking, secure the main account with two-factor authentication, limit what appears on the lock screen, enable theft and device-finding controls, and verify that backups work. Menu names vary by operating-system version, manufacturer and model, but this sequence protects the device, your accounts and your data before you start using it normally.
Your first 15 minutes: the priority checklist
- Install all available security updates. During setup, open the operating system’s update screen and apply every pending update. On Android, the Security & privacy overview shows update status and provides an entry point for installation. On computers, use the built-in Windows Update or macOS Software Update screen.
- Set a real device credential. Choose a PIN, password or passcode that is not a birthday, address, repeated number or keyboard pattern. A biometric such as a fingerprint or face scan is convenient, but it should remain backed by the passcode or password.
- Make the device lock itself. Set a short idle period and require the credential after sleep or screen-off. Microsoft describes 10 or 15 minutes as typical Windows idle intervals, but the appropriate value depends on where you use the device.
- Secure the account that controls the device. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your Apple Account, Google Account, Microsoft account or other primary account. Store recovery methods somewhere you can reach if the device is lost.
- Reduce lock-screen exposure. Hide sensitive notification previews and decide which controls, assistants, payment cards or USB accessories can be used before unlocking.
- Turn on finding and theft protections. Confirm that the device-finding service is enabled, and configure supported remote-lock, SIM-lock or failed-attempt protections.
- Check backups. Make sure photos, contacts, documents and authentication data are copied to a secure location outside the device. A backup that has never been tested is only an assumption.
These steps address different failure modes: an unpatched system can be exploited, a weak lock exposes local data, an unprotected account lets an attacker reset access, and no backup turns loss or damage into permanent data loss.
1. Update the operating system before installing apps
Updates often contain security fixes as well as new features. Run the update check while the device is connected to power and trusted Wi-Fi, then restart if requested. Repeat the check after the first restart because a new device may need several update cycles to reach the current release.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Android: Open Settings and look for Security & privacy, then review the System updates status. Android 13 and later commonly combine security and privacy controls on one page; Android 12 and earlier may show separate pages. Manufacturer software can use different labels. The overview is documented in Google’s Android security and privacy settings guide.
- Windows: Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart. Check again until no further updates are pending.
- Mac: Open System Settings > General > Software Update on current macOS versions. Older releases may call this area System Preferences.
- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings > General > Software Update and install the current update offered for the model.
If an update fails, keep enough free storage for the download, connect power, verify the date and time are automatic, and retry. Do not postpone a security update merely because the device appears to work; the vulnerability it fixes may be exploitable without an obvious symptom.

2. Choose the strongest lock you will use consistently
The lock credential is the foundation for local protection, encrypted backups and many theft-recovery features. The most secure choice is useless if you forget it and repeatedly disable protections, so balance resistance to guessing with daily usability.
| Option | Security and convenience | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Long password or alphanumeric passcode | Generally hardest to guess; slower to enter and easier to mistype. | High-risk work, travel or devices containing sensitive records. |
| Six-digit-or-longer PIN | Faster than a password while offering more combinations than a four-digit code. | Most phones and tablets used frequently. Google recommends six digits or longer on Android. |
| Biometric unlock | Fast and convenient, but dependent on a passcode or password for setup, recovery and some security events. | Use as a convenience layer, never as the only credential. |
| Four-digit PIN or predictable pattern | Quick but easier to guess or observe. | Avoid unless a platform leaves no stronger practical option. |
Android
Open Settings > Security or Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Screen lock, depending on the phone. Select PIN or Password and follow the prompts. Google recommends a six-digit PIN or longer and describes a strong password as the most secure standard screen-lock option in its Android screen-lock instructions. If the phone offers auto-confirm unlock, understand that Google warns it can reduce security.
iPhone and iPad
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, then choose Turn Passcode On. Apple uses a six-digit passcode by default, with options for a custom numeric or alphanumeric code. Face ID or Touch ID improves convenience, but the passcode is still required after a restart and in other security-sensitive situations. Apple’s passcode guidance is at Use a passcode with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Use a strong account password and, where supported, add Windows Hello (PIN, fingerprint or face recognition) under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Windows Hello’s device-bound PIN is separate from the online account password, so protect both.

Mac
Open System Settings > Lock Screen and ensure a login password is required. In System Settings > Touch ID & Password, add Touch ID where available, but keep a long, unique login password.
3. Make automatic locking mandatory
Automatic locking limits the time an unattended phone or computer remains open. Set the shortest delay that does not interfere with your work, and require the credential immediately or soon after the screen turns off.
- Windows: In Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep, choose when the screen turns off. Then open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and set Windows to require sign-in when waking. Microsoft cites 10 or 15 minutes as typical idle choices, not as a universal requirement.
- Mac: In System Settings > Lock Screen, set the display-off interval and choose when a password is required after the screen saver or display turns off.
- iPhone and iPad: Open Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock. A short interval is safer in public places; a longer one may be reasonable when reading or presenting.
- Android: Look under Settings > Display for Screen timeout, then under security or lock-screen settings for the requirement to unlock after the screen turns off. Exact names vary by manufacturer.
4. Protect the primary account with two-factor authentication
A device credential protects the hardware; 2FA protects the cloud account that can often locate, erase or restore it. Prefer an authenticator app, security key or other method you can access independently of the phone being protected. Keep backup codes in a secure offline location.

Other accounts
For Google, Microsoft and other services, open the account’s security dashboard, enroll at least one primary second factor and add a recovery method. Test the sign-in flow in a private browser window before logging out of the old device. If the only second factor is an authenticator on the new phone, export or transfer that authenticator before wiping the old phone.
5. Decide what the lock screen may reveal
Lock-screen controls are a privacy trade-off. Showing message text is convenient, but anyone holding the device can read it. Leaving Control Center, quick settings, a voice assistant, payment cards or USB accessories available may help in an emergency while also exposing functions that should normally require authentication.
- iPhone and iPad: In Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, review Allow Access When Locked. Apple lists Notification Center, Control Center, Siri, replying to messages, Wallet and USB accessories among the controls you can allow or disable. Disable items that would expose private content or permit account changes from the lock screen.
- Android: Open lock-screen notification settings and choose whether to show all content, hide sensitive content or show no notifications. Google also documents SIM-lock controls and theft protections in Protect your personal data against theft.
- Computers: Ensure notifications do not display message previews on the sign-in screen. Require authentication before using password managers, cloud drives or other sensitive applications.
6. Enable finding, remote lock and theft protections
Device-finding services are useful only when enabled before the device disappears. Confirm that location, an internet connection and the relevant account are active. Record the device’s serial number or IMEI separately, without publishing it.
Android theft controls
Google’s theft-protection documentation describes Remote Lock, Failed Authentication Lock and related options, but availability depends on Android version and device model. Remote Lock requires a screen lock, an active SIM, a verified phone number, Find Hub enabled and an internet connection. Set a SIM PIN if your carrier and phone support it; this reduces the risk that someone moves the SIM into another device to receive calls or codes. Do not assume every Android handset offers every listed feature.

Apple devices
Keep Apple’s device-finding service enabled in the account settings and verify that the device appears in the account’s device list. Review what can be done remotely before a loss occurs, and do not remove a missing device from the account until you are certain it has been recovered or erased.
Windows and Mac
Sign in with the account used by the platform’s device-finding service, enable location when appropriate, and verify that the computer appears in the account portal. Work devices may be managed by an employer; follow organizational policy rather than changing management settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Verify backups and recovery
Back up important data to a secure location outside the device. Include photos, contacts, documents, browser data, password-manager recovery information and two-factor authentication recovery codes. A cloud sync folder is not necessarily a complete backup if deletion synchronizes everywhere.
- Android: Google notes that a PIN, pattern or password can encrypt manual and automatic backups when the screen lock is used. Confirm the backup account, last successful backup time and available storage.
- iPhone and iPad: Check the device’s cloud backup status and run a manual backup after setup. If you use a computer backup, encrypt it so saved passwords and health data are protected.
- Windows and Mac: Follow Microsoft’s advice to copy important data to a secure location outside the device, such as an approved cloud service or encrypted external backup. Restore a small test file to confirm that the process works.
Keep at least one recovery path independent of the new device. For example, store backup codes in a password manager that has an emergency recovery method, and keep an encrypted offline copy for account recovery.

Platform-specific review after setup
Android security and privacy overview
After the basic lock and update steps, open the Android Security & privacy page. Review app warnings, account-security alerts, update status, device-finding status and privacy permissions. Investigate any warning rather than dismissing it. Android 13 and later commonly combine these categories; older versions and manufacturer interfaces may separate them.
Apple privacy and sign-in review
Open the account’s Sign-In & Security area to review trusted phone numbers and devices. Remove hardware you no longer own, and confirm that the recovery contact or recovery key information is current. Recheck lock-screen access after major iOS or iPadOS updates because new features can add controls to the list.
Windows and Mac account separation
Use a standard account for everyday work when administrative privileges are not required, and keep administrator credentials private. Microsoft specifically advises against letting friends or family use a work device for entertainment or school; treat a managed computer as an organizational asset even when it is physically at home. On a Mac, review which users can unlock the disk and administer the computer.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Using the same PIN everywhere: Replace it with a unique device credential and unique account passwords.
- Leaving notification previews visible: Hide sensitive content while keeping generic alerts if you need them.
- Relying on biometrics alone: Memorize the passcode or password and store it nowhere visible.
- Skipping updates because setup is taking too long: Finish the update cycle before installing a large set of apps.
- Enabling a theft feature without meeting its prerequisites: Check for the required screen lock, SIM, verified number, finding service and internet connection.
- Discovering that 2FA codes are trapped on the old phone: Transfer the authenticator or generate backup codes before erasing the old device.
- Assuming a backup exists: Check its timestamp and restore a test file.
- Changing a managed work device’s settings: Ask the administrator; management policies may intentionally hide or enforce options.
A practical maintenance schedule
- Every week: Install pending security updates and investigate security alerts.
- Every month: Confirm the latest backup completed and review account sessions or trusted devices.
- After travel, loss or a suspected compromise: Change the account password, revoke unfamiliar sessions, remotely lock or erase the device if necessary, and contact the carrier if a SIM may be exposed.
- After replacing a phone or computer: Transfer 2FA methods, verify backups and finding services, then securely erase the old device only after all data and recovery options are confirmed.
Feature names, menu paths and availability differ by operating-system version, manufacturer and model. When an option described here is missing, use the device maker’s current support instructions rather than installing an untrusted utility that claims to add it.
