For online banking, turn on the strongest sign-in method your bank offers—ideally a passkey or security key, or an authenticator app if those options are unavailable. Also enable transaction alerts. Authentication helps protect account access; alerts help you spot activity. One does not replace the other, and your bank may not offer every feature.
How the settings differ
| Setting | What it does | Main benefit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| MFA or two-factor authentication | Requires an additional authentication factor beyond the password. | Makes a stolen password less useful. | MFA covers methods of different strengths. Text and email codes can be intercepted or exposed through attacks on a phone or account. |
| Passkey or FIDO authentication | Uses a cryptographic credential associated with the legitimate service and a device or authenticator. | Resists phishing and avoids typing a reusable password or code into a fake site. | Bank support varies; there is no established current bank-by-bank availability list. |
| Transaction alerts | Sends notices based on transaction size or risk rules. | Can help you notice activity and investigate it. | Alerts monitor activity; they are not a sign-in factor and do not guarantee that a transaction will be stopped. |
The Federal Reserve’s interagency guidance describes alerts triggered by transaction size or risk parameters, alongside authentication controls for financial institutions: Authentication and Access to Financial Institution Services and Systems.
Which sign-in method should you choose?
Passkey or security key, if your bank supports it
Phishing-resistant authentication is the strongest choice among the methods covered here. A passkey or FIDO security key is designed to work with the legitimate service, making it harder for a fake site to trick you into handing over a reusable password or code. Check your bank’s security settings for passkey or security-key support before making any purchase or changing devices. CISA recommends using the strongest MFA option available and identifies phishing-resistant methods as stronger than text or email codes: CISA guidance on multifactor authentication.

Authenticator app, if phishing-resistant options are unavailable
If the bank offers an authenticator app but not a passkey or security key, the app is generally preferable to receiving codes by text or email. FTC consumer guidance recommends adding two-factor authentication to sensitive accounts such as bank and credit-card accounts, and discusses authenticator apps and security keys: Use Two-Factor Authentication To Protect Your Accounts.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Text or email codes, if that is all the bank offers
These codes still add a step beyond a password, but they are weaker than phishing-resistant methods. A code can be intercepted or exposed through attacks on the associated phone or email account. If your bank only offers codes, enable them rather than relying on a password alone, and secure the phone or email account used to receive them.
Why alerts are a separate layer
Alerts help with detection, not authentication. They may notify you when a transfer, purchase, or other covered transaction meets the bank’s size threshold or risk rules, giving you a chance to investigate. They do not stop someone from signing in, and receiving an alert is not proof that the bank has blocked the activity.

- FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality
- SECURE AND CONVENIENT: Passwordless MFA login with the YubiKey Bio authenticator and biometric information using a fingerprint, with a PIN as a fallback. Simply plug in via USB and use your fingerprint to authenticate
- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
Enable the alerts your bank makes available, then review their thresholds and delivery options so you understand what will trigger a notice. Alerts complement MFA; they cannot substitute for it.
Turn on the settings and check account activity
- Sign in through your bank’s official app or website, then open its security, sign-in, or account-alert settings. Labels and exact paths differ by institution.
- Choose the strongest authentication method offered that you can use reliably: passkey or security key where supported, otherwise an authenticator app when available. If the only additional option is a text or email code, turn it on.
- Enable alerts for the activity the bank lets you monitor, such as transfers, purchases, or transactions above a chosen amount. Check the threshold and delivery method.
- Keep your account-recovery details current. Do not give a verification code to someone who contacted you unexpectedly; FTC guidance explains how two-factor authentication protects accounts and the importance of keeping codes safe.
- Review transactions regularly. If you see activity you do not recognize, contact your financial provider promptly. The CFPB advises consumers to watch accounts closely and report suspicious activity: Watch accounts closely when card data is hacked.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
There is no direct published consumer-banking trial in the cited material that compares fraud outcomes for MFA, passkeys, and transaction alerts. The official sources describe security controls and provide guidance; they do not establish a head-to-head result or a universal list of banks that support each option. Availability, alert rules, and setup steps vary by institution.
