Start with caller identification and spam warnings on any phone. Then decide how unknown callers should be handled: screened before the phone rings, sent straight to voicemail, or blocked. A conservative setup protects you while preserving calls from a new doctor, school, employer, delivery driver or service provider. More aggressive blocking reduces interruptions but increases the chance of missing a legitimate unfamiliar number.
The exact menus depend on your phone model, operating-system version, country, language, carrier and dialer app. Use the paths below as the current starting points, then choose the closest equivalent if a label is different or missing.

These controls do different jobs. Caller identification shows who may be calling; spam warnings flag a suspected nuisance or fraud call; screening asks an unknown caller for information before you answer; silencing prevents the phone from ringing and routes the call to voicemail; blocking rejects calls that meet the platform’s criteria. Do not treat those terms as interchangeable.

Your best configuration depends on whether an unfamiliar legitimate caller can reach you in another way.

- Need every possible call: turn on caller ID and warnings, and use screening rather than blanket blocking. You will still see calls from new numbers, but callers must identify themselves where screening is supported.
- Want fewer interruptions: screen unknown callers on iPhone or Pixel, or select high-risk-only blocking on Galaxy when available.
- Never want suspected spam to ring: use iPhone Silence, Pixel automatic spam screening, or Galaxy Block all spam and scam calls. Check voicemail and Recents regularly because a legitimate caller may be classified incorrectly.
iPhone: screen unknown callers before they ring
Apple’s current iPhone guide places the controls under Settings → Apps → Phone. The names below are Apple’s documented choices.
1. Select a Call Screening behavior
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Phone.
- Tap Call Screening.
- Choose one of the three options:
- Ask Reason for Calling: an unknown caller is asked for more information before your iPhone rings. You can then decide whether to answer.
- Silence: calls from unsaved numbers are silenced, sent to voicemail and shown in Recents.
- Never: turns call screening off, so unknown calls follow the normal ringing behavior.
Ask Reason for Calling is the practical default if you are concerned about scams but cannot afford to miss a new contact. Silence is better for people who prefer a quiet phone and are willing to check voicemail and recent calls. Siri uses the iPhone’s default language when it speaks to a screened caller.
2. Turn on caller-identification sources
- Return to Settings → Apps → Phone.
- Open Call Blocking & Identification.
- Enable the business or caller-identification options that are available on your phone.
Apple lists business identification from Apple Business Connect or a carrier, along with supported call-identification apps. The list shown on your iPhone depends on installed apps and carrier support, so an option described in Apple’s guide may not appear for every user.
3. Check for carrier junk-call silencing
Some carriers provide a Silence Junk Callers option. When available, it silences calls the carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud and sends them to voicemail. This is carrier-dependent; do not assume that every iPhone has the same spam filter.

When iPhone screening is the wrong choice
If you are waiting for a first call from a hospital, recruiter, school or repair company, use Ask Reason for Calling instead of Silence. If you choose Silence, tell important contacts to leave a voicemail or send a message identifying themselves.
Google Pixel: combine caller ID, spam warnings and Call Screen
On a Pixel, open the Phone app, tap More (the three-dot menu), choose Settings, then open Spam and Call Screen. Some software versions label the section Call Screen. Google’s instructions are in Phone app Help and Pixel Phone Help.
1. Enable caller ID and spam protection
- Open Phone.
- Tap More → Settings.
- Tap Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen.
- Turn on See caller ID & spam.
This setting can identify businesses and flag suspected spam. Google notes that caller-ID and spam protection may send information about calls to Google for identification or spam assessment. Numbers saved in your contacts are not sent for that purpose.

Supported Pixel phones offer automatic screening choices. Depending on the model and location, screening can cover known spam, possibly faked numbers or first-time callers. Pixel 7 and later have the newer protection choices described by Google; Pixel 6 and earlier can show a different set of controls. The menu on your phone is the authority for what it supports.

Call Screen can ask who is calling and why. Google says a call it determines is spam may be declined automatically; a call that is not identified as spam can ring after the caller’s response is displayed. Screening may not fully understand or transcribe every caller.
3. Check eligibility for Pixel Scam Detection
Google’s separate Scam Detection feature is limited to eligible Pixel devices and supported country-and-SIM combinations. The current eligibility guidance includes Pixel 6 and later in the United States, Pixel 9 and later in several other listed countries, and some newer models with United States-only eligibility. Check Google’s current eligibility page for your exact model and location before relying on this feature.
Pixel privacy controls
For Call Screen, screening audio and transcripts are stored on the phone. Google says you can review that material and optionally share screening-phase audio, transcript and details with Google to improve Call Screen and spam detection. The described sharing applies to the screening phase before you join the call. Google’s privacy explanation is available in Keep your calls private.
Samsung Galaxy: choose high-risk-only or all identified spam
Samsung’s current instructions are under Phone → More options → Settings → Caller ID and spam protection. See Samsung’s Smart Call guide and its call-settings guide for model-specific variations.

1. Turn on Caller ID and spam protection
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options.
- Tap Settings.
- Choose Caller ID and spam protection.
- Review the terms and enable the feature.
2. Select a blocking threshold
If your Galaxy shows Block spam and scam calls, turn it on and choose one of these options:
- Block all spam and scam calls: blocks calls Samsung identifies as spam or scams, regardless of the assigned risk level.
- Only block high-risk scam calls: blocks the calls Samsung classifies as high-risk while allowing less severe spam calls through.
Choose high-risk-only blocking if you are expecting calls from new organizations or local businesses. Choose all-call blocking only when you accept that an incorrectly classified legitimate number may not ring.
3. Block or report an individual number
Samsung also lets you block a specific number or report it from the incoming-call screen or the recent-calls list. Use this for repeat offenders that get through the automated filter.

Samsung warns that Smart Call may not be available on all carriers or models, and some call settings are model-dependent. A missing menu can therefore reflect your carrier, region, software version or device model rather than a setup mistake.

What these protections cannot promise
No platform guarantees that every scam call will be detected. Google states plainly: “Not all spam calls and robocalls can be detected.” It also says Scam Detection is not fully accurate. Apple and Samsung document the controls, but the available guidance does not establish a comparable cross-platform detection rate, so there is no defensible accuracy ranking.
Caller ID itself is not proof of identity. Fraudsters can spoof numbers or imitate a business name. Treat an unexpected request for money, passwords, one-time codes or remote access as suspicious even when the displayed caller name looks familiar. Hang up and contact the organization through a number or website you already trust.
Privacy and data considerations
Google caller identification and spam assessment
Google says your phone may send numbers from callers or recipients outside your contacts to Google for business identification or spam assessment. Numbers in your contact list are not sent for that purpose. Review this trade-off if limiting number lookups is more important to you than automatic identification.

Google Call Screen recordings and transcripts
Call Screen stores screening audio and transcripts on the device. You can review them and choose whether to share screening-phase audio, transcript and details with Google to improve the feature. This sharing occurs before you join the call, according to Google’s privacy guidance.
Apple and Samsung availability limits
Apple’s business identification, supported identification apps and junk-call silencing depend on the available carrier or app. Samsung’s Smart Call availability depends on the carrier and model. A feature’s absence is therefore not evidence that your phone is defective.
Troubleshooting when the menu or behavior differs
- Confirm the app: Pixel instructions apply to Google’s Phone app; Galaxy instructions apply to Samsung’s Phone app. A different dialer can use different labels.
- Check software and model: Call Screen and Scam Detection capabilities vary across Pixel generations, while Samsung says some settings are model-dependent.
- Check country, language and SIM: Pixel screening and Scam Detection eligibility changes by language, country and, for Scam Detection, supported SIM combinations.
- Check carrier support: iPhone junk-call silencing and Samsung Smart Call features may require carrier support.
- Review voicemail and Recents: silenced or blocked calls may not ring, but iPhone Silence places them in voicemail and Recents. Pixel and Galaxy behavior depends on the protection choice shown on your device.
- Reduce the setting temporarily: if you are missing expected calls, switch from blanket blocking to screening or high-risk-only protection while you identify the legitimate number.
A practical setup for most people
Enable caller identification and spam warnings first. On iPhone, select Ask Reason for Calling; on Pixel, enable See caller ID & spam and review Call Screen; on Galaxy, enable Caller ID and spam protection and select Only block high-risk scam calls when that option is available. Move to silence or all-call blocking only after deciding that missed unfamiliar calls are an acceptable trade-off. Keep checking voicemail and recent calls, and never disclose sensitive information solely because a caller ID label appears trustworthy.
