The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the strongest choice if camera flexibility matters most: its dedicated 5x telephoto, extra high-resolution ultra-wide camera, and close-up performance give it an edge for distant subjects, macro shots, and some low-light scenes. For everyday photos, selfies, and ultra-wide shots, the less expensive Galaxy S26 can come surprisingly close. The right pick depends more on what you shoot than on megapixel counts alone.
Which Samsung phone has the best camera?
For the broadest camera system in Samsung’s current S26 lineup, choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Samsung’s US specifications list four rear cameras: a 200 MP main camera, 50 MP ultra-wide, 10 MP 3x telephoto, and 50 MP 5x telephoto. The standard Galaxy S26 has three rear cameras, including a 50 MP main camera, 12 MP ultra-wide, and 10 MP 3x telephoto. Samsung’s US S26 Ultra specifications and S26 and S26+ specifications establish the hardware differences; they are not independent image-quality tests.
Side-by-side comparisons make the practical difference clearer: Tom’s Guide found the Ultra more capable for long-range zoom, close-ups, portraits, and detail in some low-light scenes, while ordinary daytime images, ultra-wide shots, and selfies could look close between the S26 and Ultra. The Ultra is therefore the better all-round camera tool, but not an automatic improvement in every shot.

| Shooting task | Galaxy S26 Ultra | Galaxy S26 |
|---|---|---|
| Faraway subjects | Dedicated 50 MP 5x telephoto offers a clear hardware advantage; Tom’s Guide found it retained more detail at long zoom. | Has a 10 MP 3x telephoto, but no separate 5x camera. |
| Close-ups and macro | Tom’s Guide found better close-focusing and macro performance in its comparison. | Less flexible for close-ups in that comparison. |
| Everyday daytime photos | Strong results, but the difference from the S26 was not overwhelming in Tom’s Guide’s selected scenes. | Can look close to the Ultra in ordinary daytime scenes. |
| Ultra-wide photos and selfies | Has a 50 MP ultra-wide and 12 MP selfie camera. | Tom’s Guide found some ultra-wide and selfie comparisons close to the Ultra despite the S26’s 12 MP ultra-wide. |
| Video | Samsung says the S26 series includes Super Steady with Horizontal Lock; no independent Ultra-versus-S26 video comparison is established here. | DXOMARK describes video as a strength, citing effective stabilization, controlled noise, and consistent color. |
Tom’s Guide says it compared over 200 photos in its S26 Ultra versus S26 shootout. That is the publication’s test set, not a scientific sample or a guarantee that every scene will produce the same result.

What the S26 Ultra’s zoom and low-light claims mean
100x is not optical zoom
The S26 Ultra has dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras. Samsung advertises 10x optical-quality zoom and up to 100x Space Zoom, but that maximum is a processed zoom claim, not 100x optical magnification. If you regularly photograph distant subjects, the dedicated 5x camera is the more meaningful advantage over the standard S26.
Wider apertures help, but do not guarantee class-leading night photos
Samsung says the S26 Ultra’s F1.4 main-camera aperture is 47% brighter and its F2.9 5x telephoto aperture is 37% brighter than the corresponding apertures in the previous generation. These are Samsung’s product claims, not independently measured gains in finished-photo quality. Tom’s Guide reported more detail in some low-light comparisons, but DXOMARK’s S26 Ultra camera test also noted noise and inconsistent detail relative to leading competitors. Night results vary by scene and camera, so the aperture figures alone do not establish market-leading low-light performance.

What independent camera tests say
DXOMARK awarded the Galaxy S26 Ultra 157 camera points and placed it 22nd in its global camera ranking in a test dated March 9, 2026. That score and position describe DXOMARK’s methodology and ranking at that time, which can change; the score is not a universal image-quality percentage. DXOMARK recognized progress over Samsung’s prior flagship while noting remaining weaknesses in noise and detail consistency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor the standard S26, DXOMARK reported 147 camera points in a test dated August 13, 2026, describing its camera as balanced for everyday use, with strong exposure and competitive video stabilization. The two scores should not be treated as a direct percentage comparison or as a complete prediction of which phone you will prefer.

Should you buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra or Galaxy S26?
Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you use zoom or close-ups
- You often photograph distant subjects and want a dedicated 5x telephoto camera.
- You take macro-style close-ups or portraits and value the flexibility found in Tom’s Guide’s comparison.
- You want the most versatile Samsung camera setup in the S26 family, rather than the best value for routine snapshots.
Choose the Galaxy S26 if your photos are mostly everyday shots
- Your usual subjects are nearby and you mainly take daytime photos, ultra-wide shots, or selfies.
- You do not need the Ultra’s separate 5x camera or stronger close-up performance.
- You want a capable everyday camera without paying extra for camera reach you may rarely use.
DXOMARK calls the S26’s photo and video performance balanced for everyday use, and Tom’s Guide found multiple everyday comparisons close to the Ultra. The available evidence does not establish current prices, so weigh the camera features against the actual price difference where you plan to buy.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is an incremental camera upgrade rather than a clear reason for every S25 Ultra owner to replace a working phone. In Tom’s Guide’s comparison of over 200 photos, the S26 Ultra did better in macro, selfies, portraits, and some low-light and 5x-detail scenes; the S25 Ultra did better in panoramas, and some other results were close. Tom’s Guide’s S26 Ultra versus S25 Ultra comparison reflects selected reviewer-tested scenes, not every shooting condition.

TechRadar likewise characterizes the generation-to-generation camera differences as modest and says current S25 Ultra owners may not need to upgrade. If you already own the S25 Ultra, the strongest case for switching is a specific need—such as improved close-ups or the tested low-light and 5x-detail differences—not a promise of a dramatic overall change. No current retail price or trade-in value is established here.

How to interpret Samsung’s camera specifications
- More megapixels do not prove better photos. The S26 Ultra’s 200 MP main camera is a specification, not a guarantee that every image will beat the S26’s 50 MP main-camera output.
- Separate cameras expand shooting options. The Ultra’s dedicated 5x telephoto is a meaningful hardware difference when photographing distant subjects.
- Manufacturer feature claims need attribution. Samsung describes the S26 Ultra as the best camera phone within the S Series; that is Samsung’s marketing claim, not an independent consensus.
- Test rankings depend on methodology and date. DXOMARK scores and rankings are useful context, not universal measures of what every person will prefer.
