Samsung Galaxy AI is hybrid, not wholly local or wholly cloud-based. Samsung’s current US support guidance identifies most translation functions and Gallery Edit Suggestions as on-device examples. It identifies auto-formatting, auto-summarizing, auto-corrections and image editing as cloud-based examples. Other functions can combine both approaches, and availability depends on the Galaxy model, software version and region.
The practical control is Settings > Galaxy AI > Process data only on device (the exact wording or location can vary). Turning it on disables cloud processing, but Samsung warns that some features then become unavailable or limited and that certain functions still require an internet connection or Samsung Account.
What “on-device” and “cloud” mean in Galaxy AI
An on-device feature processes its input on the phone or tablet’s own processor. A cloud feature sends some or all of the work to remote Samsung or partner servers over the internet. On-device processing can continue without a network when the specific function supports offline use; cloud processing normally needs connectivity and, for some functions, a signed-in Samsung Account.
These labels describe Samsung’s published implementation guidance, not an independent laboratory audit. “Offline-capable” also does not necessarily mean every mode, language or edge case is processed locally. A feature may work locally for one task and contact the cloud for another, which is why Samsung describes Galaxy AI as a hybrid system.

Galaxy AI features Samsung identifies as on-device
Samsung’s current US support FAQ gives these prominent examples. Exact support can change with the model, software build and country.
Translation and conversation tools
Samsung lists most translation functions as on-device. Its product descriptions separately identify Live Translate and Interpreter as on-device examples. This includes translation during supported calls or face-to-face conversations, provided the language pack and phone software support the requested language.
Samsung’s older, model-specific S24 table (updated April 29, 2024) marked Interpreter, Live Translate, chat translation, Notes translation and Samsung Internet translation as offline-capable. That table is useful for understanding the type of local processing Samsung has offered, but it is not a universal matrix for every Galaxy phone sold today.

Gallery Edit Suggestions is another on-device example in Samsung’s current US guidance. The phone can analyze a photo and suggest adjustments without sending that analysis to a remote server, subject to the supported model and software version.
Time/Weather Ambient Wallpapers
Samsung’s US FAQ includes Time/Weather Ambient Wallpapers among on-device examples. The feature’s behavior can still depend on the availability of current weather information and on the device’s supported software, so an on-device AI classification does not guarantee that every data source is available offline.

Selected Google Messages writing features
Samsung identifies selected Google Messages functions—Magic Compose, message suggestions and rewrite suggestions—as on-device examples. This applies to the supported integration and versions, not automatically to every writing or summarization function in every messaging app.
Audio Eraser
Samsung separately describes Audio Eraser as an on-device example. It is designed to reduce unwanted sounds in compatible recordings. Whether it appears and which controls are available depend on the Galaxy device and software release.
Features Samsung identifies as cloud-based
The same US support guidance names several functions that use cloud processing. These are the clearest cases where turning off cloud processing can remove or restrict a feature.
Auto-formatting
Auto-formatting, including the formatting assistance associated with supported Notes workflows, is listed as cloud-based in Samsung’s current FAQ. It should not be confused with every keyboard correction or translation function, which can have a different processing path.
Auto-summarizing
Auto-summarizing is also listed as cloud-based. Samsung’s older S24 table placed Notes summaries, Voice Recorder summaries and Samsung Internet summaries in its online-only column. Those S24-era entries are historical, model-specific examples rather than a promise that all current Galaxy devices behave identically.

Auto-corrections and related writing assistance
Samsung names auto-corrections as a cloud example in its current US support material. An older S24 table marked Style and Grammar as available both offline and online, with an on-device setting caveat. This illustrates why the app, language and software version matter when determining where a particular writing operation runs.

Image editing
Samsung’s FAQ places image editing in the cloud category. The wording is broad: it does not mean that every non-generative photo adjustment leaves the phone, and Samsung’s documentation distinguishes ordinary editing from more intensive generative operations. Check the processing notice shown by the specific editor on your model.
Generative Edit is a hybrid case
Generative Edit should not be forced into a simple on-device or cloud-only bucket. Samsung says it has on-device capabilities but can use cloud processing for more intensive edits. Samsung also states that Generative Edit requires a network connection and Samsung Account login in the documented workflow.
In practice, a small or supported operation may be handled locally while a demanding object removal, expansion or scene generation sends work to cloud services. The exact handoff is implementation- and version-dependent. If you enable “Process data only on device,” Generative Edit may lose functions or refuse edits that need remote processing.
Feature map: processing, connectivity and account requirements
| Feature or group | Samsung’s description | Offline or network behavior | Account and availability notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most translation functions | On-device examples in current US support | Supported language packs can work offline; some surrounding services may still need connectivity | Varies by model, software and region |
| Live Translate and Interpreter | Described by Samsung as on-device | Samsung’s S24 table marked them offline-capable | Language and device support differ by market |
| Gallery Edit Suggestions | On-device example | Designed for local processing when supported | Requires a compatible Gallery implementation |
| Time/Weather Ambient Wallpapers | On-device example | AI processing is local; current weather data may require a connection | Feature availability varies |
| Google Messages Magic Compose, message suggestions and rewrite suggestions | Selected on-device examples | Behavior depends on the supported Messages integration and language | Not every messaging feature is included |
| Audio Eraser | On-device example | Local processing on supported devices | Controls vary by software version |
| Auto-formatting | Cloud example in current US support | Normally needs network access | May be limited when cloud processing is disabled |
| Auto-summarizing | Cloud example in current US support | Normally needs network access | Specific app and model support applies |
| Auto-corrections | Cloud example in current US support | Normally needs network access | Writing features can differ by language and app |
| Image editing | Cloud example in current US support | Network may be required for supported AI edits | Distinguish ordinary adjustments from generative features |
| Generative Edit | Hybrid: on-device capability plus cloud for intensive edits | Samsung says the documented feature requires a network connection | Samsung Account login is required in the documented workflow |
The table reflects Samsung’s published descriptions, not a guarantee that every operation in a category follows one path. If the phone displays a cloud-processing notice or a feature disappears after you enable local-only processing, that device-specific behavior takes precedence.

How to stop Galaxy AI from using cloud processing
Samsung provides a user-facing setting intended to keep Galaxy AI processing on the device.
- Open Settings on the Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Tap Galaxy AI. On some software versions, the section may be named or positioned slightly differently.
- Choose Process data only on device.
- Turn the setting on and read the warning about features that require online processing.
- Retry the feature. If it is unavailable, the function or that particular operation requires cloud processing on your model.
Samsung warns that menu names and locations can vary. The switch is not a blanket promise that every Galaxy AI feature will work offline: it is a control to disable cloud-based processing, so cloud-dependent functions can be limited or removed.
Privacy: what Samsung says, and what that does not prove
Samsung says that Live Translate and Interpreter inputs remain within the phone in the on-device modes it describes. Samsung also says its broader approach combines on-device and cloud AI, and that personal data is not stored long-term or used to train AI even when a feature uses remote servers.
Those are Samsung’s stated policies and product descriptions, not independently verified guarantees. The company’s Newsroom explanation frames the approach as user choice and openness. A remote-processing feature still requires data to travel to a server while it is being processed, so users who must keep data local should use the local-only setting and accept the resulting feature limits.

Can Galaxy AI work without an internet connection?
Some functions can. Samsung’s S24-era table marked Interpreter, Live Translate, chat translation, Notes translation, Samsung Internet translation and Photo Ambient Wallpaper as offline-capable. The same table marked Notes auto-formatting, spelling correction, cover generation and summaries, Voice Recorder summaries, Samsung Internet summaries, Generative Edit and Generative Wallpaper as online-only for that S24 software context.

Do not apply that 2024 table to a different phone without checking. Samsung explicitly says feature support and processing behavior vary by device and software version. Offline capability can also depend on having the required language resources installed, while weather or account-backed content can still need a connection even when the AI operation itself is local.
Model, software and regional differences
Samsung’s current support pages repeatedly attach compatibility caveats to Galaxy AI. A feature may be available on one generation, absent on another, or changed by a later firmware release. Regional firmware, supported languages, app versions and account requirements can all affect the result.
Samsung’s US overview, stated as of July 2026, lists 22 languages for Call Assist (including Live Translate), Note Assist, Interpreter and Transcript Assist. It lists 41 languages for Photo Assist, Creative Studio and Writing Assist, 16 for Now Nudge, 13 for Now Brief and 13 for Call Screening. These are feature-specific language counts; they do not indicate whether processing is on-device or in the cloud, nor do they imply that every listed language is available on every model or in every country.
Before relying on offline use, check Samsung’s support page for the exact model number, One UI/software version, region and language. Install pending system and app updates, then inspect the feature’s own information or privacy notice.
How to diagnose a feature that will not work offline
- Confirm the local-only switch: make sure Process data only on device is enabled under Galaxy AI.
- Identify the exact operation: a feature may contain both local and cloud actions. For example, Generative Edit can process simple work locally but require the cloud for an intensive edit.
- Check the connection requirement: if Samsung documents a network requirement, local-only mode cannot make that operation fully offline.
- Check account status: some functions, including the documented Generative Edit workflow, require a Samsung Account.
- Verify language support: offline translation depends on supported language resources and the selected language pair.
- Check model and software: install the latest supported update and compare the feature list for your exact device and region.
- Read the on-screen notice: Samsung may explain that a feature is unavailable because cloud processing is disabled rather than because the phone is malfunctioning.
What the hybrid design means for choosing a Galaxy phone
If local processing is your priority, look for the specific functions you use—such as translation, Interpreter, Live Translate, Gallery Edit Suggestions or Audio Eraser—rather than assuming that the “Galaxy AI” label means everything runs locally. If you depend on summaries, auto-formatting, broad image editing or the most intensive Generative Edit operations, expect that cloud processing may be part of the workflow.
Samsung’s published language counts and feature lists are useful starting points, but they are not a substitute for checking the exact model and software. A phone marketed with the same Galaxy AI name can have different offline support from another model or region.
Bottom line
Galaxy AI is a hybrid system. Samsung currently presents most translation functions, Gallery Edit Suggestions, Time/Weather Ambient Wallpapers, selected Google Messages writing tools and Audio Eraser as on-device examples, while auto-formatting, auto-summarizing, auto-corrections and image editing are cloud examples. Generative Edit can use both paths. Turn on Settings > Galaxy AI > Process data only on device when local processing matters, then verify which functions remain available on your particular Galaxy device, software version, language and region.
