The Safari changes most likely to reduce unnecessary energy use are stopping unwanted video autoplay, removing extensions you do not need, and enabling macOS Low Power Mode. These settings can reduce background work, playback, or overall system consumption, but Apple does not publish a Safari-specific percentage or number of minutes saved. Treat them as practical controls to try, not guaranteed battery-life figures.
What Safari can—and cannot—do for MacBook battery life
Safari does not include a single “maximum battery” switch. Battery runtime depends on the display, processor load, network activity, video playback, applications running alongside Safari, battery health, and your MacBook model. Safari settings are useful mainly when they prevent work you did not intend to start.
Apple’s documentation supports three sensible actions: block unwanted autoplay, review extensions, and use macOS Battery controls. The evidence does not establish that every extension drains power, that every autoplaying video causes a noticeable reduction in runtime, or that a specific setting saves a fixed percentage. Apple’s current Mac laptop battery guide says Low Power Mode reduces energy use to increase battery life, while its Safari guides explain the controls without giving Safari-specific measurements. 1. Stop videos from starting automatically
Autoplay can make Safari download, decode, and display video before you choose to watch it. Blocking that behavior is most useful on news pages, social feeds, advertising-heavy sites, and pages that open several media elements at once. It also prevents unexpected sound and reduces the chance that a video continues playing in a background tab.

Set a default for most websites
- Open Safari.
- Choose Safari > Settings from the menu bar.
- Select Websites, then choose Auto-Play in the left column.
- Under When visiting other websites, select Never Auto-Play.
Safari applies that choice as the default for sites that are not listed with their own rule. Apple documents this procedure in Stop autoplay videos in Safari on Mac.
Apply a different rule to one site
While the Auto-Play settings pane is open, find the site in the list and choose its rule. You can allow a trusted video service to play automatically while blocking autoplay everywhere else, or do the reverse for a site where media is disruptive. Per-site settings are useful when a blanket block breaks a legitimate workflow, such as a training portal or a live dashboard.
Choose the strictness that fits your use

Stopping autoplay avoids playback you did not request, but Apple does not quantify the battery effect. A page may still perform other work, and a video you deliberately watch will still use energy.

Extensions can add useful features such as content filtering, password assistance, translation, or page tools. They can also inspect pages or run code as you browse. The right battery decision is therefore not “disable every extension”; it is to remove or turn off extensions you no longer need and investigate any extension Safari identifies as slowing browsing.

Turn off extensions you do not use
- Choose Safari > Settings.
- Open the Extensions tab.
- Review the installed extensions and clear the checkbox for anything you do not need.
- For an extension you no longer trust or use, select it and uninstall it using the controls shown in that pane.
Apple says Safari can warn when an extension slows browsing and recommends checking installed extensions. That warning is a reason to investigate a particular extension, not proof that it is consuming a measurable amount of battery. Use extension changes as a diagnostic test
If Safari becomes slow, pages behave strangely, or the Mac gets warm during ordinary browsing, turn extensions off temporarily and repeat the same task. Compare behavior under similar conditions: the same websites, number of tabs, network, and video activity. If the problem disappears, re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a possible conflict. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends turning extensions off when Safari does not work as expected; see If Safari doesn’t work as expected on Mac.
Do not assume that disabling an extension will extend runtime. An extension may be lightweight, may already be idle, or may be performing a task you need. Keep an extension when its benefit outweighs the possible background work, and remove obsolete duplicates or tools that you no longer use.

Low Power Mode is a system-level control rather than a Safari preference. Apple describes it as reducing energy use to increase battery life. Because it applies beyond Safari, it can help when your browser is only one part of the MacBook’s workload.

- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Settings.
- Select Battery.
- Choose Low Power Mode and select the available setting for battery use.
The exact choices and labels can vary by Mac model and macOS version. Apple’s current instructions and the other Battery options are documented at Change Battery settings on a Mac laptop.
Balance energy use against performance
Lower energy use can come with trade-offs. A demanding web app, development environment, video call, or large upload may feel less responsive when the system prioritizes efficiency. If you need maximum performance for a short task, switch Low Power Mode off and turn it back on afterward. For reading, email, documentation, and light browsing, leaving it enabled while on battery is a reasonable experiment.
Inspect Battery usage history
Battery settings can show usage history for periods such as the last 24 hours or the last 10 days, depending on the option your Mac displays. Use that history to identify when energy use rises, then correlate the time with video playback, many open tabs, meetings, or another application. It will not isolate Safari’s contribution or prove that a particular extension caused the drain, but it can reveal patterns worth investigating.
4. Optimize video streaming on battery
Apple’s Battery guide describes an option to optimize video streaming on battery by playing HDR video in SDR. SDR requires less energy than HDR in this context. This is a macOS battery setting, not a Safari-only switch, and it is not available in exactly the same form on every Mac.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and review the video-streaming or energy-saving options shown for your model. Enable the HDR-to-SDR optimization when it is offered and when preserving HDR picture quality is less important than battery runtime. If the option is absent, do not try to force it through Safari preferences; availability depends on the Mac and its display capabilities.
5. Keep privacy controls separate from battery claims
Prevent cross-site tracking is a privacy feature. It limits how third-party trackers can use cookies and other website data across sites. Apple’s explanation of the feature does not establish that enabling it saves battery, so it should not be presented as a proven power-saving setting. Leave the setting enabled if its privacy protection matches your preferences, but judge it on privacy and site compatibility rather than expected runtime. Some websites may behave differently when privacy or website permissions change. If a site stops working, check its Safari settings or test the page in a separate tab before changing system-wide battery controls.
6. A practical order for testing changes
Changing one control at a time makes it easier to tell what helped. Use this sequence when your MacBook seems to lose charge quickly during browsing:

- Record the situation. Note whether the Mac is on battery, the number of Safari tabs, active video or web apps, brightness, and other demanding applications.
- Set Auto-Play to Never Auto-Play for other websites, then add exceptions only where needed.
- Review Extensions. Turn off unused items and any extension associated with a Safari warning or a reproducible slowdown.
- Enable Low Power Mode in System Settings > Battery while on battery.
- Check video optimization. If your Mac offers HDR video in SDR on battery, enable it when reduced image quality is acceptable.
- Repeat the same browsing task. Use comparable conditions rather than comparing a quiet reading session with a high-resolution video call.
- Check Battery usage history for recurring periods of heavy use and investigate the application or activity that coincides with them.
This process can show whether a setting changes your particular workload. It still cannot turn an observation into an Apple-certified battery figure, because Apple does not publish a Safari-specific runtime result for these steps.
7. Troubleshooting when battery life is still poor
Safari is slow after changing settings
Recheck extensions first. Turn them all off temporarily, then enable only the ones you need. Confirm that the slowdown is not limited to one website, since a site’s scripts or media can be responsible even when Safari itself is operating normally.
A website’s video no longer plays automatically
Open Safari > Settings > Websites > Auto-Play and create a site-specific exception. Choose Stop Media with Sound instead if silent previews are useful. You can still start a blocked video manually.
Low Power Mode is unavailable
Check Apple menu > System Settings > Battery for the options your Mac exposes. Apple notes that available Battery settings depend on the Mac. If Low Power Mode is not listed, use the autoplay, extension, and available video-streaming controls instead.
Battery usage remains high
Look beyond Safari: a video call, external display, high brightness, demanding web application, or another process may dominate consumption. Battery settings’ usage history can help identify the timing, while Safari’s per-site controls can prevent unnecessary media from adding to the load.
What not to expect
- There is no Apple-published percentage of battery saved by choosing Never Auto-Play.
- There is no universal claim that disabling every Safari extension increases runtime.
- Prevent Cross-Site Tracking should not be described as a battery optimization.
- Low Power Mode is not Safari-specific and may affect performance or other system behavior.
- Results vary with Mac model, macOS version, display, network, websites, and workload.
For most MacBook owners, start with the least disruptive change: stop unwanted autoplay, then remove extensions you do not use. Add Low Power Mode when you need a broader reduction in energy use, and use the Battery history view to understand whether Safari is actually the main source of consumption.
