Change the cleaning mode first, then verify the saved map and room names before any mop-related run. The Roomba Max 775 Combo offers four modes—vacuum only, mop only, vacuum and mop together, and vacuum first then mop. Choose among them based on the room and the mess rather than changing every available preference. For a floor with crumbs, dust or other dry debris followed by a wet pass, choosing vacuum first then mop is sensible editorial guidance; it is not a manufacturer requirement.
Start with the cleaning mode
The mode determines whether the robot performs dry pickup, wet cleaning, or both. iRobot’s product FAQ states: “Your robot has 4 cleaning modes: vacuum only, mop only, both at the same time, or vacuum first then mop.” These are the first choices to make because they directly affect what the robot does in each room.

When vacuum only is the right first change
Select vacuum only when the immediate problem is dry material. It is also the least complicated choice for a carpet-heavy floor because no mopping operation is requested. If you are preparing for a later wet run, a vacuum-only pass can remove loose particles first without asking the robot to combine tasks.

When mop only makes sense
Mop only is for a wet-cleaning pass on floors that are ready to be mopped. Because the robot is not asked to vacuum first, it is better suited to a floor that has already been cleared of loose debris or has only light surface soil. Do not select it merely because the room contains hard flooring; the mode should match the actual cleaning job.

When to use both at the same time
The simultaneous mode is convenient for ongoing maintenance. It avoids scheduling separate passes when the floor needs ordinary vacuuming and mopping together. It is not a comparative performance claim: the available official information does not establish that this mode cleans better or faster than the other modes.
Why vacuum first then mop is often the practical choice
Dry debris is easier to collect before moisture is introduced. If a kitchen or entryway has visible crumbs, grit or dust and you want a wet finish afterward, choose the sequential mode. This separates the two tasks without requiring you to start two jobs manually. Treat that as a useful workflow recommendation, not as a statement that the robot requires this mode.
Check wet-cleaning boundaries before pressing Start
Before a mop-only, simultaneous, or vacuum-first-then-mop run, open the Roomba Home App and confirm the saved map and room names. A room label that is missing or assigned incorrectly can make a room-selection request less useful, even when the robot itself is operating normally.

iRobot says the Max 775 Combo automatically avoids carpets in mop and vacuum-and-mop modes. Its product FAQ puts it this way: “And it automatically avoids carpets in vac + mop or mop cleaning modes, no need to stress over extra mess.” Carpet avoidance is a stated product behavior, not a reason to skip checking your map. Verify that the map represents the current layout and that room boundaries are sensible before relying on an automated wet run.
- Confirm that the map shown in the app is the one you expect to use.
- Check that the rooms you intend to clean have the correct names.
- Make sure the selected mode matches the floor task: dry pickup, wet cleaning, both together, or vacuum before mopping.
- Pay particular attention after moving furniture or changing the floor layout, because the saved map may no longer describe the room accurately.
The supplied official product information confirms map creation and room auto-naming, but it does not document a universal, tap-by-tap path for changing every preference. App labels and screens can change, so use the current controls displayed in your Roomba Home App rather than following an assumed menu sequence.
Use the mapping features to make mode choices safer
The Max 775 Combo uses ClearView Pro LiDAR and PrecisionVision AI to scan the home. iRobot’s product page says the system can create up to five maps and automatically name rooms in the Roomba Home App. Those capabilities matter most when you clean selected rooms or alternate between dry and wet jobs.

For a single-level routine
Keep the map and room names current, then select only the rooms that need the chosen mode. For example, a vacuum-only run can target carpeted bedrooms, while a mop-related run can target mapped hard-floor rooms. The official material does not promise that every map will remain correct after every furniture change, so inspect it when the layout changes.

If your home requires more than one saved floor plan, the product page states that up to five maps can be created. Before starting a wet run, make sure the active map corresponds to the floor where the robot is located. Selecting the wrong saved map can undermine room targeting even if the robot’s sensors are functioning correctly.
Know what the AutoWash Dock does—and what it does not replace
The AutoWash Dock handles several routine tasks after a compatible run. According to iRobot’s product information, it empties debris, washes and dries the roller mop, and refills the robot with clean water mixed with StayClean Mopping Concentrate. This reduces the amount of hands-on work between jobs, but it does not eliminate basic care.

The Max 700 Series support information says the robot cleans in neat rows and returns to recharge when needed. It also says a robot may end cleaning after 90 minutes of inactivity while off the dock. These behaviors can look like a pause or an incomplete run, especially when you are testing a new mode.

- Open the Roomba Home App and check whether the job is marked finished, paused or still active.
- Check whether the robot has returned to the dock to recharge.
- If it has been away from the dock without activity for about 90 minutes, consider the support article’s inactivity behavior before changing the cleaning mode.
- Only after checking the job status should you restart the run or alter the selected mode.
A row-by-row path through a room is therefore expected behavior, not evidence that the robot ignored your preference. The app status is the appropriate place to determine whether a job ended or paused.

Maintenance is upkeep, not a cleaning preference
Changing modes cannot compensate for blocked brushes, dirty contacts or a saturated filter. iRobot’s basic care guidance for this product includes wiping the robot bin, rinsing the dock water tanks, cleaning charging contacts and brushes, and changing the filter every three to six months. Present these as recurring maintenance tasks rather than settings to toggle.
After a dusty or high-debris run
- Wipe the robot bin as part of routine care.
- Inspect and clean the brushes so accumulated material does not interfere with pickup.
- Check the charging contacts if the robot does not seat or charge reliably.
After mopping
- Rinse the dock water tanks as described by iRobot’s care guidance.
- Allow the dock’s roller-washing and drying cycle to complete.
- Check the water system if the robot does not appear to receive clean water mixed with StayClean Mopping Concentrate.
Every three to six months
Replace the filter within iRobot’s stated three-to-six-month interval. The exact interval within that range depends on use and conditions; the official guidance gives the range rather than a single fixed date.

- Choose whether the tasks should be separated. Select vacuum first then mop when you want a dry pickup before wet cleaning. Select both at the same time for ordinary combined maintenance.
- Verify the map and room names. Do this in the Roomba Home App before a mop-related job.
- Check the floor boundary. iRobot states that carpets are automatically avoided in mop and vacuum-and-mop modes, but map accuracy still matters.
- Start the run and read its status. If the robot appears idle, use the app to determine whether it finished, paused or returned to recharge.
- Perform the relevant care. Wipe the bin, rinse dock tanks, clean contacts and brushes, and replace the filter on the stated schedule.
What you do not need to change first
You do not need to hunt for a large set of advanced preferences to get useful results from the Max 775 Combo. The highest-impact choices established for this model are the four cleaning modes and the map and room information used to target them. Other app controls may exist or may change with software updates, but the available official material does not provide verified, universal tap-by-tap instructions or a tested recommendation for changing them.
Start with the mode, confirm the map, then observe the job in the app. That sequence addresses the cleaning goal and the wet-cleaning boundary before you spend time adjusting less consequential options.
