Start with the settings that reduce uncertainty rather than immediately changing graphics sliders: install updates, select a built-in operating mode, enable Real-Time Monitor, and then tune one game against a specific problem. Performance is the sensible default for mixed use, Silent favors quieter unplugged play, and Turbo is for maximum frame rate—especially while connected to wall power.

The safest order for first-time setup

The ROG Xbox Ally X has several layers of controls: Windows, the Xbox full-screen interface, Armoury Crate SE, Command Center, game menus, and driver-level options. Changing several layers at once makes it difficult to know what helped or caused a problem. Use this order:

  1. Install device, Windows, graphics-driver, and Xbox app updates.
  2. Choose Silent, Performance, or Turbo according to the session.
  3. Turn on Real-Time Monitor so you can see frame rate, temperatures, system load, and battery level.
  4. Adjust graphics or upscaling in one game at a time.
  5. Apply battery-saving changes only when battery life, heat, or fan noise is the problem you are trying to solve.

These are starting points, not a universal preset. The best choice changes with the game, target frame rate, screen brightness, noise tolerance, and whether the charger is connected.

1. Install updates before judging performance

Updates can change game compatibility, power behavior, and menu names. ASUS says graphics-driver updates may include optimizations for new games, so testing an old driver against a new game can produce a misleading baseline.

Update through Armoury Crate SE

  1. Press the Command Center button.
  2. Open Armoury Crate SE.
  3. Choose Settings, then Update Center.
  4. Check every listed item and install updates that apply to the handheld.

Check Windows and the Xbox app

Windows may download updates automatically or ask for a restart. The Xbox app can also update itself or prompt you to update related components. Finish those prompts before comparing frame rates or battery behavior. If a menu path differs after an update, use the current label shown on your device rather than relying on an older screenshot.

2. Pick the operating mode that matches the session

Open Command Center and select Operating Mode. ASUS describes Performance as a balance between performance and battery life, Silent as the lower-power, lower-noise option, and Turbo as the maximum-power mode for the highest possible frame rates. On the ROG Xbox Ally X, Turbo can draw additional power when the device is plugged into a wall outlet.

Mode Use it first when What to expect Main trade-off
Silent You are playing unplugged, the game is lightweight, or fan noise matters most. Lower power use and quieter fan behavior. Less performance headroom; demanding games may need lower graphics settings or a lower frame-rate target.
Performance You want one general-purpose profile for mixed games. A practical balance of frame rate, power draw, heat, and battery life. It will not deliver Turbo’s maximum performance or Silent’s minimum noise.
Turbo You prioritize frame rate, are playing a demanding title, or are connected to wall power. The highest power allowance among the built-in modes. Higher power use, heat, and fan noise; unplugged battery drain can be faster.

For a first run, stay with a built-in mode. Manual Mode exposes more advanced controls and is useful only when you have a defined goal, such as setting a particular power limit or fan response.

3. Enable Real-Time Monitor before tuning a game

Press the Command Center button and tap Real-Time Monitor. While a game runs, it can display FPS, CPU and GPU utilization, temperature, and battery level. The overlay does not improve performance by itself; it gives you evidence for deciding whether a change helped.

What the readings tell you

  • FPS: Compare the same scene or repeatable section after each change. A higher peak is less useful than a frame rate that stays near your target.
  • GPU utilization: High GPU use with low FPS usually means the game is graphics-limited, so lowering resolution-heavy settings may help.
  • CPU utilization: A CPU-limited game may not benefit much from lowering texture quality. Crowds, simulation distance, and other CPU-heavy options are more relevant.
  • Temperature: Watch for a temperature rise that causes clocks or frame rates to fall over time rather than judging only the first minute.
  • Battery level: Compare drain during similar play sessions; a short menu test is not a reliable estimate of unplugged runtime.

Write down the original frame rate, resolution, mode, and battery percentage before changing anything. That simple baseline prevents a visual improvement from being mistaken for a performance improvement, or vice versa.

4. Tune graphics one game at a time

Do not lower every setting immediately. First identify the game’s target: a stable 30 FPS, a stable 40 FPS, 60 FPS, or another limit appropriate to the title. Then change the setting most likely to address the observed bottleneck.

Lower the settings that cost the most

When FPS is below target, begin with demanding options such as resolution scale, shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ambient occlusion, and view distance. Keep texture quality higher when the GPU has enough memory, because textures often affect clarity more than frame rate. Make one change, play the same scene, and check the overlay again.

Use FSR when the game supports it

FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is an in-game feature. If the game offers it, enable it from the game’s graphics or display menu and compare its quality modes. A performance-oriented mode can raise FPS by rendering internally at a lower resolution, while a quality-oriented mode preserves more detail. The names and available modes differ by game, so do not assume that one FSR setting looks the same everywhere.

Consider RSR for games without FSR

Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a driver-level alternative for games that do not provide FSR. It requires the game to render below the display’s native resolution, after which the driver upscales the image. RSR can be useful for an older or unsupported title, but image sharpness, compatibility, and interface scaling vary by game. Use either the game’s supported FSR implementation or RSR as appropriate; they are not automatic universal quality improvements.

Set an FPS limit when extra frames are wasted

If a game regularly exceeds the frame rate you actually need, use the game’s FPS limit or Command Center’s FPS Limit. A lower cap can reduce unnecessary rendering and may make frame delivery more consistent. The cost is straightforward: the device will not render above that cap. Choose a cap that matches your display and the consistency you can maintain, then verify it with Real-Time Monitor.

5. Improve battery life with measured changes

Battery settings trade efficiency for brightness, lighting, or performance. Apply only the changes that solve your particular problem, and compare them during similar gameplay rather than relying on a single percentage reading.

Change Where to find it Likely benefit Cost or limitation
Switch to Silent Command Center > Operating Mode Lower power use and fan noise. Lower performance headroom in demanding games.
Use Performance instead of Turbo Command Center > Operating Mode Often a better balance for unplugged play. Lower peak frame rates than Turbo.
Lower the FPS cap Game graphics menu or Command Center > FPS Limit Less rendering when the game exceeds your target. Fewer maximum frames.
Reduce display brightness Command Center brightness slider Less display power consumption, particularly indoors. A dimmer image, especially in bright surroundings.
Disable RGB lighting Lighting controls in Armoury Crate SE Small additional savings and less visual distraction. No lighting effects.
Turn off CPU Boost Armoury Crate SE > Settings > Performance > Eco Assist Can improve efficiency in easier-running games. ASUS notes that demanding games may lose some performance.

When CPU Boost should stay enabled

Leave CPU Boost on when a game is CPU-limited, has heavy simulation or crowds, or already struggles to maintain its target. Turning it off is more defensible in a game that is comfortably meeting its frame-rate target and does not need additional CPU performance.

What not to assume about battery runtime

ASUS lists an “up to 2X battery life” claim for the ROG Xbox Ally X, but the figure is tied to a specific manufacturer comparison: Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60 FPS limit, low graphics, and Silent mode, comparing the ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 80Wh) with the ROG Ally X (RC72LA, Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 80Wh). It is not a promise that every game or setting will last twice as long. The device is listed with an 80Wh battery, but actual runtime varies substantially with the game, brightness, frame cap, network activity, and power mode.

6. Leave Manual Mode for a specific objective

Manual Mode in Armoury Crate SE can adjust APU power behavior and fan speeds. Those controls operate across different time windows, and plugged-in and unplugged profiles can behave differently. A setting that is stable on a charger may be unsuitable for battery play.

Use Manual Mode only after establishing a baseline

  • Record the built-in mode, FPS, temperature, and battery drain first.
  • Change one power or fan value at a time.
  • Test a repeatable game scene for long enough to expose heat buildup.
  • Return to a built-in mode if temperatures, noise, stability, or battery behavior become worse.

There is no single ASUS profile that is best for every game. Manual tuning is an advanced optimization, not a required first step.

7. Know when to use the Windows desktop

The Xbox full-screen interface handles most routine launching and handheld controls. For advanced Windows tasks, swipe up from the bottom to open Task Switcher, then choose Windows Desktop. This is where you can reach ordinary Windows settings and desktop-style tools.

To return, use the Xbox app’s Xbox Full Screen control. ASUS says a restart is needed to return without background processes; re-entry without those optimizations is also available. Use the desktop when a task genuinely requires it, rather than adding extra steps to every settings change.

8. Choose the right game and streaming path

Windows supports games from Steam, Epic Games, and Battle.net. Most Xbox Play Anywhere titles should support cloud saves and syncing, although the exact behavior depends on the title and account. If a game appears to have lost progress, first confirm that you are using the same account and that the game supports the relevant synchronization feature.

Cloud or remote streaming can reduce local rendering work and may save battery, but the result depends on network quality, latency, service availability, and the game. Treat streaming as a separate option for a suitable connection, not as a guaranteed battery-saving setting.

9. Optional desk or TV setup

You do not need a dock to change any setting in this guide. For a desk or TV setup with an external monitor and keyboard or mouse, ASUS recommends a 130W-capable dock such as the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 or another dock with equivalent power capability. Confirm the dock’s power and display specifications before buying; a dock is an expansion accessory, not a performance preset.

If storage is the problem rather than frame rate, the device can use a standard M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 SSD for expansion. Verify the exact fit, installation requirements, warranty implications, and current product specifications before opening the handheld.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom First checks Next adjustment
Low FPS in every game Install updates, confirm the selected mode, and inspect GPU/CPU readings in Real-Time Monitor. Use Performance or Turbo, then lower the most demanding in-game settings. Check whether the game is GPU- or CPU-limited.
Good FPS at first, then drops Watch temperature and clocks over a longer session. Improve ventilation, reduce the power or graphics demand, or use a lower cap instead of chasing short-lived peak FPS.
Battery drains quickly Check whether Turbo, a high FPS cap, high brightness, or RGB lighting is active. Try Silent or Performance, lower the cap and brightness, disable lighting, and evaluate CPU Boost in an easier game.
Image looks soft after upscaling Compare native resolution, FSR quality modes, and RSR in the same scene. Use the clearest option that still meets your frame-rate target; upscaling support and quality are game-dependent.
Fans are too loud Check whether Turbo is selected and whether the game is rendering more frames than needed. Use Performance or Silent, cap FPS, and lower the settings that drive GPU load.
You cannot find a setting Check whether you are in Command Center, Armoury Crate SE, the Xbox full-screen interface, or Windows Desktop. Install pending updates and look for the current label, since menu locations can change.

A practical first-session checklist

  • Update Armoury Crate SE, Windows, graphics drivers, and the Xbox app.
  • Start in Performance unless the session clearly calls for Silent or Turbo.
  • Enable Real-Time Monitor and record a baseline in the game you actually play.
  • Set a realistic FPS target before changing visual quality.
  • Change one graphics option or upscaling method at a time.
  • Use a frame cap when extra frames are not useful.
  • For battery play, test mode, brightness, lighting, and CPU Boost changes separately.
  • Use Manual Mode only when a measured problem remains after the built-in modes are understood.
