Before your robot vacuum’s first run, pair it with its official app if you want app-based mapping, open the doors to every room you want included, clear cords and loose obstacles, and turn on map saving if the model offers it. Start the mapping process from the dock and let it finish without moving the robot or dock. Once a map is available, check its boundaries and add keep-out or no-mop zones where supported. For a vacuum-mop, verify carpet behavior and the manufacturer’s rules for water and cleaning fluid before starting a wet clean.

There is no universal set of suction, water-flow, or mapping settings for every robot. The exact controls depend on the model, app, firmware, and region, so treat the steps below as a checklist of settings to inspect—not as defaults every robot supports.

Decide whether to map first or clean first

Mapping and cleaning are related, but they are not always the same first-run task. Some manufacturers describe a mapping process that is focused on creating the map rather than cleaning. Others may use a cleaning run to build the map. Follow the workflow shown for your exact model, and do not assume a button or mode offered by one brand will exist in another app.

For a combo vacuum-mop, consider making the first mapping run dry if the manufacturer’s instructions recommend it. ECOVACS advises against attaching mop-pad plates during first mapping for the models covered in its US support article, updated September 30, 2026. Its guidance explains that those supported robots will not go over carpets in vacuum-and-mop or mop mode. This is not a universal rule for all combo robots: check the instructions for your model before removing or attaching mop components.

  • Mix 1 to 20 with water for daily mopping or 1 to 5 for tough grime, fast drying with a subtle fresh scent, no rinsing needed.

If the robot offers a dedicated mapping mode, use that mode as directed. If it maps during a clean, choose a routine that lets it cover the spaces you want represented. The goal of this first stage is a usable map; fine-tuning cleaning strength and wet-mop behavior can wait until you know which rooms and floor areas the robot can reach.

Check the app and map-saving options

Pair the robot if you need app controls

Connect the robot to its official app before mapping if you want to use app-based map controls. ECOVACS says to connect its robot with the ECOVACS Home app before mapping. Depending on the model, pairing may make settings and map controls available. Some robots can still perform a basic clean without Wi-Fi, so app pairing is not necessarily a prerequisite for every kind of first run.

Use the official app and the model-specific setup instructions rather than relying on a menu path from another robot. App features can differ by model, software version, and region; a control described in a support article may not appear on your device.

Enable map saving where available

Look for a map-saving or saved-map option before creating the first map. Roborock’s preparation guidance for its supported workflow says, “Map saved mode is enabled.” That instruction is useful when the model offers the feature, but it does not establish that every robot saves maps or uses the same label.

  • Mix 1 to 20 with water for daily mopping or 1 to 5 for tough grime, the light floral scent fades once dry, with no rinsing needed.

If no map-saving control is present, do not infer that the robot has a fault. It may use a different mapping workflow or may not offer persistent map saving. Consult the exact model’s manual or support instructions before changing unrelated settings.

Prepare the rooms the robot should map

A robot can only map spaces it can access. Open the doors to the rooms you want included before starting. If a door is closed during the mapping run, that room may be absent from the first map. Roborock, ECOVACS, and iRobot setup guidance all emphasizes making the intended spaces accessible, though their specific workflows cover different product families.

Clear cords, shoelaces, clutter, and other loose objects that could snag brushes or block access. This is not just housekeeping: an obstruction can stop the robot or prevent it from reaching an area you expected it to map. Remove obstacles from the planned route, including at room entrances, rather than assuming the robot will navigate around every item.

Keep the dock in the position required for the mapping workflow. Roborock and ECOVACS instruct users to begin at the base or dock; Roborock also says to leave the dock in place and allow the robot to return successfully. Moving the dock during a first map can interfere with the robot’s ability to return to its reference point. These instructions reflect the cited manufacturer workflows, so use your model’s manual if it describes a different procedure.

Run the first map without interrupting it

  1. Place the dock as instructed. Choose its position before starting, then keep it there while the first map is being created.
  2. Start the robot from the dock. Both Roborock and ECOVACS specify starting from the base in the cited mapping instructions.
  3. Leave the route accessible. Keep the intended room doors open and do not reintroduce cords or loose objects while the robot is moving.
  4. Let the mapping workflow finish. iRobot says the map-creation process described in its guide focuses on mapping rather than cleaning and should not be interrupted. Roborock’s instructions include allowing the robot to return successfully. Do not stop or relocate it partway through unless the model’s instructions tell you to.
  5. Wait for the map to become available in the app, if applicable. Only then review its layout and decide whether map-based controls are needed.

Interruptions do not affect every navigation system in the same way, but some mapping workflows can leave an incomplete map. If the run stops early or fails to return, use the exact model’s instructions to determine whether to resume, restart, or correct the map; do not assume every app has the same recovery controls.

Review the map before setting boundaries

After the robot has created a map, check whether the intended rooms and access routes appear. Closed doors can account for missing rooms. If a space is not represented, make it accessible and follow the manufacturer’s mapping workflow again; the precise way to update or recreate a map varies.

Where available, map-based boundaries can help keep the robot out of places it should not enter. On the iRobot guide for certain newer Roomba families, a keep-out zone prevents entry, while a no-mop zone allows vacuuming but prohibits mopping. ECOVACS describes map management and virtual walls after mapping. Feature names, behavior, and compatibility differ, and iRobot notes that compatibility depends on the app, software, and region.

Set boundaries only after the map exists, so you can place them against the layout the robot actually created. Do not assume that a virtual wall, keep-out zone, or no-mop zone is available on every model—or that similarly named controls work identically across apps.

Choose a sensible first cleaning routine

There is no broadly applicable suction level or pass count for a first clean. Where a standard or normal routine is offered, it is a reasonable starting point; review the resulting map and observe how the robot handles your floors before deciding whether a different setting is needed. The name “Normal” is not a cross-brand specification, however, and the available adjustments depend on the robot.

One iRobot support guide describes these named presets for the model families it covers:

Preset in the cited iRobot guide What it sets
Light Medium suction, light liquid, and one pass
Normal High suction, standard liquid, and one pass
Deep Maximum suction, high liquid, and two passes
Smart Settings adjusted for room dirtiness

These definitions apply to the presets described in that support guide, not to every iRobot product or other manufacturers’ robots. If your app exposes individual controls rather than presets, use the model’s own explanations to understand what each control changes.

Check carpet behavior before a wet clean

Before running a vacuum-mop with water, find out how it treats carpets in the selected mode. Carpet avoidance or lifting behavior is model-specific, and the options may be more involved than a single on/off switch. For example, the Roborock Qrevo Pro FAQ lists rise, avoid, ignore, and cross carpet modes. These are Qrevo Pro examples, not standard labels for the robot-vacuum category.

Roborock also describes a carpet-first cleaning sequence for its supported setup: the robot vacuums mapped carpets, returns to wash its mop pads, then finishes other areas. That order is a feature description for the relevant product workflow, not a general promise about combo robots. Confirm the selected mode and carpet behavior in your exact model’s documentation before sending it on a wet run.

Use only cleaning fluids approved for your model

Check the manual before adding detergent or other cleaning fluid to a robot’s water tank. Rules are model-specific; an ingredient or dilution that is permitted for one device may be unsuitable for another.

For the Roborock Qrevo Pro, the cited FAQ says to use Roborock-branded floor cleaner in its tank, diluted at a ratio of 1:300. It warns that other formulations may damage the tank or cause mopping malfunction. That ratio and warning apply to the Qrevo Pro guidance, not to robot mops generally. If your model’s instructions do not authorize a cleaning fluid, do not assume it is safe because it is sold for floors or for another robot.

What to inspect when setup does not go as planned

  • A room is missing from the map: Check whether its door was open and the robot could access the entrance. Open the route and use the model’s mapping instructions to update or recreate the map.
  • The robot stops or gets caught: Remove cords, shoelaces, and loose objects from its route before another run. The exact response to an obstruction varies by robot.
  • The map seems incomplete after a stopped run: Some mapping workflows can be left incomplete if interrupted. Follow the manufacturer’s recovery procedure rather than assuming the robot will finish automatically.
  • The robot does not return to its dock: Check whether the dock was moved during mapping. In workflows that rely on the dock as a reference, keep it in place and follow the instructed start-and-return sequence.
  • A carpet is wetted during mopping: Stop and check the robot’s carpet-mode options and instructions before another wet clean. Do not assume carpet sensing, mop lifting, or avoidance is supported.
  • A fluid or intensity setting is unclear: Refer to the exact model’s manual or support page. Do not transfer another model’s detergent ratio, suction descriptions, or liquid settings.

How to compare setup capabilities across models

If you are checking whether a particular robot fits your home, compare the capabilities that affect this first run. Manufacturer setup pages establish examples for particular models, not a ranked comparison of all brands. Look up each model’s own specifications and support instructions for these points:

  • Does it have a dedicated quick-mapping process, map while cleaning, or both?
  • Can it save maps for later use, and must map-saving be enabled before the first run?
  • Does its app support keep-out zones, no-mop zones, virtual walls, or another kind of boundary?
  • How does it handle carpets during vacuuming and mopping, and which modes can the user select?
  • Can you adjust suction, number of passes, or water flow, or are those controls available only through named presets?
  • Which cleaning fluids, if any, does the manufacturer permit, and what dilution or tank instructions apply?

App, software, and regional compatibility can affect which map features appear. A feature listed for a model family may therefore require a particular app or software version, or may not be available in every region. Confirm compatibility for the unit and region you actually use.

First-run settings checklist

  • Pair the official app if you want app-based mapping or map controls.
  • Open doors to the rooms the map should include and clear cords, shoelaces, clutter, and access paths.
  • Enable map saving if the feature exists and the model’s instructions call for it.
  • Start from the dock when the manufacturer’s workflow requires it; leave the dock in place and let the mapping process complete.
  • Review the finished map before adding supported keep-out or no-mop zones.
  • For a combo robot, confirm carpet behavior and whether the first map should be dry before starting a wet clean.
  • Use only the water, detergent, suction, and intensity settings allowed by the exact model’s instructions.
