You can play Resident Evil Requiem without playing any earlier Resident Evil game. Capcom says the game is designed for newcomers who know nothing about the Raccoon City Incident. If you want one optional preparation game, choose the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 for its direct Leon and Raccoon City context. Add the 2020 Resident Evil 3 remake for more city history, or explore Resident Evil Outbreak if Grace Ashcroft’s family connection interests you.

Those are optional routes, not prerequisites. Requiem was released on February 27, 2026, and its story introduces Grace as a new protagonist while bringing Leon S. Kennedy back to a setting longtime fans recognize.

The short answer: start Requiem immediately, or play Resident Evil 2 first

Capcom’s official story recap states that newcomers can jump straight into Resident Evil Requiem. Director Koshi Nakanishi gave the same guidance in a January 2026 interview, saying the game is designed to welcome people who have never played Resident Evil and do not know anything about the Raccoon City Incident. You will not be locked out of the plot, characters or basic stakes because you skipped earlier games.

The best one-game warm-up is Resident Evil 2 (2019). It follows Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield during the Raccoon City disaster, while Requiem returns to Raccoon City and includes Leon as a protagonist. That makes Resident Evil 2 the most direct way to recognize the setting and Leon before starting the new game. This is an editorial recommendation based on the games’ documented connections, not an official Capcom requirement.

#1 Best Overall
Resident Evil 2 - PlayStation 5
  • TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
  • RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

If you have more time, play the Resident Evil 3 remake after Resident Evil 2 for additional Raccoon City context. Choose Resident Evil Outbreak or Outbreak File #2 only if you want a deeper look at the Ashcroft family. The Ethan Winters games, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village, are worthwhile for broader franchise knowledge but are not the clearest preparation for Requiem’s Raccoon City-focused direction.

Capcom summarizes the newcomer position plainly: “Even if you haven’t played a Resident Evil game before, you can jump right in, though long-time fans will notice plenty of familiar touches through the game.” (Capcom’s October 2025 recap.)

Which games add useful context?

Game Best for What it adds before Requiem Required?
Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) The shortest useful preparation Leon, Claire and the Raccoon City Incident; the most direct setting and character connection No
Resident Evil 3 (2020 remake) More Raccoon City history A parallel view of the city’s outbreak and the events surrounding the second game No
Resident Evil Outbreak and Outbreak File #2 Ashcroft family background Earlier appearances of the Ashcroft family, connected to Grace’s history No
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village Ethan Winters’ complete arc Context for the recent first-person storyline, which director Koshi Nakanishi says concluded with these games No
The original Resident Evil and the full series Completionists and lore historians Long-term Umbrella, bioterrorism and recurring-character history No

Why Resident Evil 2 is the strongest optional pick

Requiem investigates the truth behind the Raccoon City Incident and returns to the city years after its destruction. The official PlayStation listing names Leon S. Kennedy as a protagonist and describes him as a survivor of that incident. Capcom’s series recap identifies Resident Evil 2 as the entry that brought players into the city through Leon and Claire. Playing the remake therefore gives you the most immediately relevant background without asking you to learn the entire franchise.

The 2019 remake is also a practical choice because it retells the events in a modern presentation rather than requiring you to begin with the original 1998 release. You can understand why Raccoon City matters, who Leon is and how the incident affected ordinary people without completing several older campaigns first. Nothing in Capcom’s statements changes the central qualification: the remake is useful context, not homework.

What you should remember from Resident Evil 2

  • Leon is introduced as a police officer arriving in Raccoon City during the outbreak.
  • Claire Redfield’s campaign shows another perspective on the same catastrophe.
  • The city becomes a defining location in the series’ history.
  • The game establishes the kind of institutional conspiracy and biological threat that later stories revisit.

You do not need to memorize every creature, file or supporting character. The value of Resident Evil 2 for Requiem is its broad context: Leon’s history and the significance of the city.

When to add the Resident Evil 3 remake

Play the 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3 if your interest is specifically Raccoon City rather than a single character. Capcom discusses the second and third numbered games together as entries that moved the action directly into the city. Resident Evil 3 expands the outbreak’s timeline and shows additional consequences of the disaster.

The game is still optional. No official source says that understanding its plot is necessary to follow Requiem. A sensible two-game route is Resident Evil 2, then Resident Evil 3, followed by Requiem. If you only have time for one, stop after Resident Evil 2; the second remake is enrichment rather than a missing chapter.

What the Outbreak games explain about Grace Ashcroft

Resident Evil Outbreak and Outbreak File #2 are the deep-cut option. Producer Masato Kumazawa says the Ashcroft family returns from the Outbreak series. That gives longtime players a family-history reason to revisit those games before meeting Grace Ashcroft in Requiem.

The official PlayStation game listing identifies Grace’s mother as Alyssa Ashcroft, a Raccoon City Incident survivor and a reporter who continued investigating Umbrella. Kumazawa says the developers wanted a protagonist with a personal connection to the city while making Grace distinct from established heroes such as Leon and Chris. He described the project as a return to “a story that continues the overarching narrative rooted in Raccoon City and the secret machinations of the Umbrella Corporation.” Read the full interview in the June 26, 2025 PlayStation Blog Q&A.

That connection does not make Outbreak required. The producer explains why the family link exists, but does not say players must know Alyssa’s earlier story to understand Grace. The games are also older and their current platform and regional availability can vary, so check compatibility before planning a route around them.

Do you need Resident Evil 7 or Village first?

No. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village form Ethan Winters’ story. In the January 29, 2026 interview, director Koshi Nakanishi said Ethan’s storyline concluded with those two games and that the team wanted to steer the series back toward the main storyline leading up to Resident Evil 6. That places the Winters arc alongside, rather than ahead of, Requiem’s return to Raccoon City.

Play both if you want to understand the series’ modern first-person era or compare its recent tone and storytelling. Do not play them under the assumption that they are prerequisites for Grace or Leon. Their strongest value is broad franchise context, not a direct explanation of Requiem’s central investigation.

Horror Tales: The Wine (PS5)
  • Mediterranean Horror: Explore the forsaken capital of an awe-inspiring archipelago. Do not let yourself be fooled by the gentle sea breeze, the Mediterranean vistas or the comforting summer sun. Since the Devil's Fevers pandemic ravaged the city, it was abandoned, and now only horrific nightmares await there.
  • Survive your Nemesis: Someone is relentlessly hunting you. Suffer and agonize while you try to run away from the encounters with this strange stalker obsessed with you.
  • Intense Challenges: Solve environmental riddles, physics puzzles and other similar challenges in an interconnected vertical world. Even while being chased and hunted.
  • Accessibility and Photomode: Tweak more than 20 Accessibility settings to create a tailored experience for you. Use the Photomode to make perfect shots and unlock many secrets using it.

Choose the Winters route only for this goal

  • Start with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard if you want Ethan’s story from its beginning.
  • Continue with Resident Evil Village to complete that arc.
  • Then play Requiem for the return to the older Raccoon City-centered narrative.

Do you need the original Resident Evil or every game?

Only if you are pursuing series history for its own sake. Capcom describes Resident Evil as a franchise whose stories evolve while maintaining a connective throughline, but it also says the developers do not bind each new game to fixed notions from previous entries. That approach is why Requiem can acknowledge established lore without turning a complete back catalog into an entry fee.

A full playthrough can add appreciation for recurring institutions, characters and the long-running Umbrella storyline. It can also create a substantial time commitment and expose you to older design conventions. None of that is needed to follow the new game’s premise. If your goal is specifically to prepare for Requiem, the full franchise is disproportionate to the payoff.

Pick a preparation route based on your time

Route 1: No preparation

Start Resident Evil Requiem immediately. This is the route Capcom explicitly supports for newcomers. You may miss references that longtime fans recognize, but the core story is intended to be accessible without prior play.

Route 2: One game

Play the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake, then begin Requiem. This is the best balance of time and relevance because it covers Leon and the city at the center of the new investigation.

Best Value
Capcom Resident Evil 2 Remake - PS5
  • A spine-chilling reimagining of a horror classic - Based on the original PlayStation console release in 1998, the new game has been completely rebuilt from the ground up for a deeper narrative experience
  • A whole new perspective New over-the-shoulder camera mode and modernized control scheme creates a more modern take on the survival horror experience and offers players a trip down memory lane with the original gameplay modes from the 1998 release
  • Terrifyingly realistic visuals Built on Capcoms proprietary RE Engine, Resident Evil 2 delivers breathtakingly photorealistic visuals in 4K whilst stunning lighting creates an up-close, intense and atmospheric experience as players roam the corridors of the Raccoon City Police Department (RPD)
  • Face the grotesque hordes Zombies are brought to life with a horrifyingly realistic wet gore effect as they react in real time taking instant visible damage, making every bullet count
  • Iconic series defining gameplay Engage in frenzied combat with enemies, explore dark menacing corridors, solve puzzles to access areas and collect and use items discovered around the environment in a terrifying constant fight for survival

Route 3: Two games

Play Resident Evil 2, then the Resident Evil 3 remake. Choose this if the history and geography of Raccoon City matter as much to you as Leon’s role.

Route 4: Lore-focused

Play Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, then investigate Outbreak and Outbreak File #2 if you want the Ashcroft connection. Treat the Outbreak titles as optional historical material, not a required bridge.

Route 5: Complete modern-era context

Play Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village for Ethan’s concluded storyline, then use the Resident Evil 2 remake as your direct Raccoon City preparation before Requiem. This route is for players who want both major modern story directions, not for players trying to minimize prerequisites.

What Requiem’s setting and characters connect to

Requiem is set in Raccoon City and follows an investigation into the truth behind the incident that defined the series. Grace Ashcroft supplies a new personal link to that place through her mother, Alyssa. Leon supplies the direct connection to a returning survivor and protagonist from the earlier city-centered games.

Those links explain why older players may recognize names, locations or themes. They do not imply that every callback requires a complete campaign history. Nakanishi specifically said the game welcomes people who do not know the Raccoon City Incident, while Capcom’s recap distinguishes newcomer accessibility from the extra recognition longtime fans receive.

Release, platforms and the scale of the series

Capcom lists Resident Evil Requiem as released on February 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The game includes multiple difficulty settings and lets players switch between first-person and third-person perspectives in real time. Those options affect how you play, but they do not alter the recommended preparation order.

Capcom reported more than 183 million cumulative Resident Evil game units as of December 31, 2025 in its March 4, 2026 sales announcement. That is a franchise-wide total, not Requiem sales. The figure illustrates the size of the back catalog, but it is not a reason to treat the catalog as mandatory preparation.
