For most newcomers, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Capcom USA staff explicitly describe it as a good jumping-on point for the series. If Resident Evil 4 is the game that caught your attention, its 2023 remake is a sensible alternative; if your priority is maximum fear, Capcom USA staff single out Resident Evil 7 biohazard as the scariest entry. Your best first game therefore depends on whether you want the broadest introduction, the modernized 2005 experience, or the most intense horror.
The short answer: choose by the experience you want
| Game | Best fit for a beginner who wants… | What official material establishes | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 (2019) | A general introduction to Resident Evil | Capcom USA staff recommend it to new players as a jumping-on point. PlayStation describes the remake as a modernized way to experience the series’ roots. | This is the clearest publisher-backed default, not a claim that every player will prefer it. |
| Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) | The game that originally attracted you to the series, or a modernized version of the 2005 title | PlayStation describes the remake as a modernized version of the 2005 game. | It is a reasonable alternative, but the explicit Capcom beginner recommendation is Resident Evil 2 (2019). |
| Resident Evil 7 biohazard | The strongest horror-first experience | Capcom USA staff call it the scariest one. | “Scariest” is an attributed staff opinion, not a measured ranking of every game. |
Those three choices cover the most defensible starting routes supported by the available official guidance. You do not need to begin with the original 1996 release to understand the series, and there is no single first game that is objectively right for every newcomer. Start with the row that matches your tolerance for horror and the game that made you curious.

Why Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the safest default
Capcom USA staff give a direct answer to the beginner question: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” Because that statement comes from the publisher’s USA staff and addresses new players specifically, it carries more weight for a general recommendation than a fan ranking or an informal difficulty list.

PlayStation’s official series introduction adds useful context by describing the Resident Evil 2 remake as a modernized way to experience the series’ roots. That makes it a practical bridge between the identity established by the original games and the expectations of a current player. You get an entry presented in a contemporary form without being asked to begin with a 1996 release.

What “best default” means here
Calling Resident Evil 2 the default does not mean it is guaranteed to be the least frightening, easiest, or shortest game. The official material does not provide a measured comparison of difficulty, length, accessibility features, or fear intensity across the series. The recommendation means that Capcom identifies it as a strong first contact with the franchise, while PlayStation positions it as a modern route into the series’ foundations.
When to follow this route
- You want one answer rather than a long chronology.
- You are curious about what defines Resident Evil as a series.
- You prefer a modernized presentation instead of starting with the original 1996 game.
- You have no strong preference between the series’ different tones.
Choose the edition available for your own platform, and confirm that the store listing is for the 2019 remake rather than an older release or a bundle whose contents are unclear. Current regional availability and pricing are not established here, so check the live listing in your region before purchasing.
When Resident Evil 4 (2023) is the better first game
Resident Evil 4 is the most straightforward alternative when it is the reason you are considering the series at all. PlayStation describes the 2023 remake as a modernized version of the 2005 game. If trailers, a friend’s recommendation, or familiarity with the 2005 title is what brought you here, beginning with that remake can keep your motivation high.
Interest is a legitimate starting criterion
PlayStation’s introduction makes the broader point that the best place to start depends on what you are looking for. That matters because “beginner” can describe two different readers: someone seeking the most representative entry, and someone who already knows which game they want to play. For the first reader, Resident Evil 2 has the explicit Capcom endorsement. For the second, Resident Evil 4 may be the more useful choice simply because it is the experience that prompted the search.
How to frame Resident Evil 4 correctly
Treat Resident Evil 4 as an interest-led alternative, not as a replacement for Capcom’s stated beginner pick. The evidence supports three precise claims: the 2023 release modernizes the 2005 game; it can suit readers drawn to that particular entry; and it is not identified in the cited Capcom guidance as the general first game for newcomers.
Rank #2
- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Before buying, verify the platform and edition. The available material does not establish current stock, regional storefronts, included extras, or whether a particular listing is the remake you intend to play. A title, cover image, and release year should all match the 2023 remake in your store’s details.
Should a horror-sensitive player start with Resident Evil 7?
Probably not as a default. Capcom USA staff say, “Resident Evil 7 biohazard is the scariest one! Play that one to lose sleep.” The wording is playful, but the practical signal is clear: Capcom staff regard Resident Evil 7 as an especially intense horror choice.
Use the statement as a warning, not a scientific ranking
“Scariest” is an opinion attributed to Capcom USA staff. The available official material does not measure fear, catalog every frightening scene, or rank all Resident Evil games on a common scale. Individual reactions also vary. Someone who dislikes a particular type of tension may find a different entry harder to tolerate than the one described by staff.
A gentler decision for cautious players
If you are especially sensitive to horror, use Resident Evil 2 as the general route while recognizing that no complete comparative fear scale is available. You can also choose Resident Evil 4 if that is the game you already feel comfortable approaching. The key is to avoid selecting Resident Evil 7 solely because it is famous: the only source-backed characterization available here explicitly emphasizes its scariness.
A simple decision tree
- Do you want one publisher-backed starting point? Pick Resident Evil 2 (2019).
- Is a specific game what attracted you? Pick that game when it is Resident Evil 4 (2023), the modernized version of the 2005 title.
- Is your priority the strongest horror experience? Consider Resident Evil 7 biohazard, with Capcom USA staff’s “scariest” description in mind.
- Are you unsure how much horror you can handle? Use Resident Evil 2 as the general starting point rather than choosing the staff-described scariest entry.
- Are accessibility controls central to your choice? Check the manual and the in-game menu for the exact platform and edition before purchasing.
This sequence deliberately puts publisher guidance before personal preference, then uses preference to break ties. It avoids pretending that the sources provide a numerical score for fear, difficulty, or beginner friendliness.

- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Accessibility: what to verify before you start
The Capcom Resident Evil 4 manual for PlayStation 5 says that additional support settings are available under Options > Accessibility. The available page does not enumerate those settings, and the reference is specifically a PS5 manual page. Do not assume that every platform or edition exposes identical controls.
Check the exact version
- Identify the platform on which you will play.
- Confirm whether the store listing is the remake or original release you intend to use.
- Open the platform-specific manual or in-game help before relying on a particular setting.
- From the title’s menu, open Options and look for Accessibility when that menu is documented for your version.
- Read each available description and test the setting before beginning a long session.
Because the source does not list the individual options, it would be misleading to promise a particular text, control, visual, or audio accommodation. Verify the menu on your hardware and edition instead.
How to prepare for your first session
A good first session is less about mastering a series chronology and more about making an informed commitment. The following process keeps the choice reversible and limits avoidable surprises.
1. Write down your deciding factor
Choose one sentence: “I want the general introduction,” “I want the 2005 game modernized,” or “I want the most frightening option.” If you cannot complete one of those sentences, use Resident Evil 2 as the neutral starting point supplied by Capcom’s staff recommendation.
2. Confirm the product identity
Check the release year, platform, and edition in the live store listing. The evidence here does not verify regional pricing, stock, bundles, or retailer terms, so those details must be confirmed where you live. Avoid inferring contents from a similarly named package.

- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
3. Review the available menus
Launch the game far enough to inspect Options. For Resident Evil 4 on PS5, the manual identifies an Accessibility tab. For other platforms and games, consult the matching manual rather than transferring assumptions from the PS5 page.
4. Set a comfort plan
If horror affects your sleep or stress level, decide in advance how long you will play, whether you will use headphones, and when you will stop. This is especially relevant if you choose Resident Evil 7 after considering Capcom staff’s description of it as the scariest entry.
5. Reassess after the opening session
Ask whether the tone and presentation match the reason you chose the game. If not, switching to one of the other two routes is not a failure and does not require completing a series-wide order first. The purpose of a beginner recommendation is to get you into a game you can enjoy, not to impose a mandatory sequence.

Assuming release order is mandatory
The original Resident Evil dates to 1996, but the official guidance does not require a newcomer to begin there. Resident Evil 2 (2019) is explicitly presented as a jumping-on point, and PlayStation describes it as a modernized way into the series’ roots.
Confusing “modernized” with “identical”
PlayStation’s wording supports calling Resident Evil 2 a modernized experience of the series’ roots and Resident Evil 4 a modernized version of the 2005 game. It does not establish that either remake is identical to its source release, nor does it provide a feature-by-feature comparison. Use “modernized” accurately and avoid promises about unchanged content.
Best Value
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Treating a staff opinion as a measurement
Capcom USA staff’s description of Resident Evil 7 as the scariest entry is useful guidance for a horror-sensitive reader, but it is not a study or a complete ranking. Present it as their opinion, then make your own comfort-based decision.
Buying before checking the edition
Platform, region, and edition can change what is included and which settings are documented. Since current listings and regional availability are not verified here, inspect the product page you will actually use.
Expecting an accessibility feature list from a menu label
The Resident Evil 4 PS5 manual confirms an Accessibility tab but does not enumerate its settings in the available reference. Do not infer specific accommodations from the tab name alone.

Which starting route should you choose?
Choose Resident Evil 2 (2019) when you want the broadest, most directly supported introduction. It is the only option in this guide that Capcom USA staff explicitly recommend to new players.
Choose Resident Evil 4 (2023) when that remake is the reason you are interested in Resident Evil. PlayStation identifies it as a modernized version of the 2005 game, making it a sensible interest-led entry.
Choose Resident Evil 7 biohazard when your main goal is an intense horror experience and you are comfortable with Capcom USA staff’s characterization of it as the scariest one. Keep that description in the category of attributed opinion rather than objective measurement.
Those choices answer the beginner question without inventing a universal ranking. Start with the route that matches your goal, verify the exact platform and edition, and use the relevant manual’s settings information before you commit to a long play session.
