There is no universal preset for a spatial audio microphone. Start by identifying what the microphone actually outputs—separate capsule signals, encoded Ambisonics, or a product-specific spatial mode—then match your recorder, channel layout, orientation, format, and monitoring settings to that output and to your delivery workflow.

Start with the microphone’s output format

The first setting to settle is not sample rate or bit depth; it is the kind of signal the microphone sends to the recorder. A spatial microphone may provide separate signals from its capsules, an already encoded Ambisonics signal, or a product-specific mode that records Ambisonics or binaural audio. These options are not interchangeable, and their names and controls vary by device.

What the microphone provides What to configure What to confirm before recording
Separate capsule signals, often called A-format Enough discrete recorder inputs to capture the channels separately; a compatible conversion step may be needed downstream. That every capsule signal is recorded and that the converter or post-production software supports the microphone’s output.
Encoded Ambisonics, often called B-format The channel count, channel order, and Ambisonics convention expected by the recorder and receiving software. That the format and ordering match the decoder or project—not just that the file has the expected number of channels.
Product-specific spatial or binaural mode The mode and channel option specified for that microphone and its app or recorder. Whether the selected mode records a multichannel Ambisonics file or a two-channel binaural file.

For example, Sennheiser describes the AMBEO VR MIC as a four-capsule microphone whose capsule feeds are recorded separately and converted from A-format to B-format for Ambisonics workflows. Sony’s ECM-AX10 guide, by contrast, describes an app workflow in which the user selects SPATIAL and then chooses four-channel AmbiX or two-channel binaural recording. Those are examples of particular products, not universal menu labels or defaults.

Choose the recording path: separate channels, Ambisonics, or binaural

Record separate capsule feeds when the microphone requires it

If the microphone outputs raw capsule signals, record every required output on its own discrete track. Do not combine the feeds into a stereo track or apply independent channel processing simply to make the session look simpler. The individual signals are inputs to the spatial encoding workflow; preserving them separately gives the compatible converter the channels it needs.

In Sennheiser’s documented AMBEO VR MIC workflow, that means four capsule signals on four separate tracks. The manufacturer specifies identical microphone preamplifiers for those tracks and conversion from A-format to B-format for the downstream Ambisonics workflow. The exact input count and conversion support for another microphone must come from that microphone’s documentation.

Record encoded Ambisonics when the device or chain provides it

If the microphone or recorder provides encoded Ambisonics, check the format and channel order before the take. A multichannel file can have the right number of channels and still be interpreted incorrectly if the receiving software expects a different ordering or convention. Verify the handoff with the actual decoder, DAW, or delivery workflow rather than assuming that every application uses the same arrangement.

Choose binaural only when that is the intended output

Binaural recording is a different capture option from a multichannel Ambisonics recording. In Sony’s ECM-AX10 app example, the documented choices are four-channel AmbiX and two-channel binaural after selecting SPATIAL. Pick the mode that fits the intended workflow: a two-channel binaural file is not simply a four-channel Ambisonics file with fewer tracks. If you need a format that can be decoded or repurposed later, confirm that the chosen capture mode preserves what your downstream workflow requires.

Set channel count and recorder inputs

Match the recorder’s available inputs and track setup to the microphone’s actual output. For separate capsule feeds, create a discrete track for every feed and label the tracks so their identity remains clear during editing and conversion. For a microphone that outputs encoded Ambisonics or a device-specific file, use the channel configuration described for that mode. A recorder that cannot accept the required number of simultaneous inputs, or an app that cannot capture the selected mode, is not made compatible by changing the file name or importing the recording into a DAW later.

Before you start, consult the documentation for both the microphone and recorder to confirm input count and power requirements. The available documentation does not establish one input or power configuration for all spatial microphones; those details depend on the exact device and connection. Also check whether the recorder can preserve the channels as separate tracks or as the intended multichannel file.

Match gain across an array microphone

For a multi-capsule array, keep the preamp gains matched across the capsule channels. If the recorder supports linked, digitally controlled gains, linking the channels helps prevent one control from being changed independently. Avoid adjusting only one capsule channel during a take: it can change the balance among the signals used to form the spatial image.

Sennheiser explicitly instructs users of the four-channel AMBEO VR MIC workflow to record the four capsule signals separately with identical microphone preamplifiers. It also warns that even small differences can influence the spatial image, and says any gain adjustment during a take should be applied equally to all four channels. Apply that advice to the documented AMBEO setup; for another microphone, follow its own gain-linking and level instructions.

No single gain number can be recommended from the available product information. The appropriate level depends on the microphone, recorder, sound source, and acoustic scene. Set levels using the recorder’s supported metering and the device documentation, then make a short test recording at representative loudness. Listen to or inspect the test in the intended decoding workflow before committing to a longer take.

Set orientation and Ambisonics channel order

The software must know how the microphone is physically mounted so that the recorded sound field is oriented as intended. A microphone mounted upright, upside down, or pointing endfire cannot automatically be assumed to match the software’s default orientation. Set the corresponding orientation option in the recorder or converter when that control is available.

Sennheiser’s AMBEO converter provides upright, upside-down, and endfire positions, plus a horizontal rotation correction for aligning the sound image with video. Use the setting that matches the actual mounting and camera relationship. Do not choose a rotation merely because it makes a preview appear convenient; verify the orientation by recording a known sound from a known direction and checking its position in the receiving software.

For the same converter, the channel order differs by Ambisonics convention: Classic FuMa uses W-X-Y-Z, while ambiX uses W-Y-Z-X. Select the format expected by the next application or destination. These two orders are a concrete example of why “four-channel Ambisonics” alone is not a complete configuration description. They are not a universal mapping for every device or application, so check the manuals for the complete chain.

Choose correction and low-cut processing deliberately

Correction and low-cut controls depend on the microphone and conversion workflow. In the Sennheiser converter guide, the Ambisonics correction filter is on by default to optimize the 360-degree sound image; the low-cut filter is off by default and can cut interfering low frequencies. A factory or software default describes that particular workflow, not the right choice for every room or recording.

Consider low cut when unwanted low-frequency noise, such as rumble, is present. Leave wanted bass content intact when it matters to the recording. If you apply filtering or correction, note the setting as part of the session information so that the processing is understood during editing and handoff. Avoid treating the correction filter as a substitute for selecting the correct microphone orientation, output format, or channel order.

Select sample rate, bit depth, and monitoring for the whole chain

Choose a sample rate and bit depth supported by every device and application in the recording and post-production chain, and appropriate for the intended deliverable. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one best setting for all spatial microphones, recorders, or platforms. A setting supported by the recorder may still be unsuitable if a plug-in, monitoring path, or downstream application does not support it.

The Sound Devices Ambisonics Plugin guide gives a bounded example of workflow-specific limits: recording supports 16- or 24-bit depth, not 32-bit float Ambisonics; sample rates up to 192 kHz are supported, but binaural monitoring is not supported above 48 kHz. These are limits for that Sound Devices workflow, not general limits for spatial audio microphones. In particular, do not infer from a supported recording rate that every monitoring mode remains available at that rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the recorder’s supported recording formats and the plug-in or conversion software’s requirements.
  • Check the monitoring path separately from the recording path, including any rate limit stated for binaural monitoring.
  • Use a rate and bit depth that the intended destination and every intermediate step can handle.
  • Confirm that the recorded file opens with the intended channel layout and format before a full session.

A practical setup sequence

  1. Identify the microphone output. Read the microphone and app documentation to determine whether you are capturing separate capsule feeds, encoded Ambisonics, or a product-specific spatial or binaural mode.
  2. Check the connection and recorder capacity. Confirm the required input count and power requirements for the exact microphone and recorder. Set up enough discrete tracks for all required feeds.
  3. Configure the channels. For a raw array output, keep the capsule signals on separate tracks. For encoded Ambisonics, set the channel count and format expected by the receiving software.
  4. Link and match array gains. Use linked gains if available and apply any adjustment equally across the capsule channels in a workflow that requires matched levels.
  5. Set physical orientation in software. Choose the option matching the microphone’s mounting position and, where relevant, its horizontal alignment with video.
  6. Confirm Ambisonics ordering. Check whether the next application expects ambiX, FuMa, or another documented arrangement; do not rely on channel count alone.
  7. Choose filtering and file settings. Decide whether correction or low cut is appropriate, then select sample rate and bit depth supported by the full recording, conversion, monitoring, and delivery chain.
  8. Make a test recording. Record a short representative sample, open it in the intended downstream software, and confirm that the channels decode and the sound direction is oriented as expected.

Common setup problems and how to find them

  • The spatial image sounds wrong or does not align with the picture. Check that the software orientation matches the microphone mounting and that any horizontal rotation correction is appropriate. Confirm the format and channel order in the decoder.
  • The decoded image changes when one channel is adjusted. For a capsule array such as the documented AMBEO workflow, verify that all required feeds are present on separate tracks and that their preamp gains remain matched.
  • The file imports but decodes incorrectly. Verify the actual Ambisonics convention and channel sequence expected by the application. Import success alone does not establish that the channel order is correct.
  • Binaural monitoring is unavailable at the selected rate. Check whether the limitation belongs to the monitoring plug-in or path rather than the recorder’s ability to record. The Sound Devices Plugin guide, for example, specifies a 48 kHz ceiling for binaural monitoring even though its workflow supports recording rates up to 192 kHz.
  • There is unwanted low-frequency noise. Consider the documented low-cut option where available, while checking that the filter will not remove wanted bass content.
  • The recorder cannot capture the intended mode. Recheck the microphone’s output and the recorder or app’s input and mode support. A mode offered by one product is not a guarantee that another recorder supports it.

What to verify before the session

Use the exact manuals for the microphone, recorder, converter, and delivery software; compatibility is specific to the hardware and software in the chain. The manufacturer examples above establish useful principles—separate and matched capsule feeds where required, correct physical orientation, explicit channel ordering, and workflow-specific format limits—but they do not establish a universal preset or a single best gain, sample rate, or bit depth. The reliable final check is a short recording decoded and monitored in the same path you intend to use for the real take.
