The best Raspberry Pi camera depends on what you need to capture: choose Camera Module 3 for a compact autofocus all-rounder, its Wide or NoIR variant for a specific scene, the High Quality Camera for interchangeable lenses, or the Global Shutter Camera for fast motion. These are five use-case recommendations, not a measured ranking: Raspberry Pi publishes specifications, not comparative lab results. The options below reflect Raspberry Pi’s camera and software documentation, accessed October 2026.
Five Raspberry Pi camera recommendations
| Camera | Best suited to | Key difference | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera Module 3 standard | General projects, stills and video where autofocus is useful | 12 MP-class Sony IMX708 sensor with powered autofocus and standard field of view | Integrated fixed optics rather than a lens you can swap |
| Camera Module 3 Wide | Rooms, robotics and scenes that need broader framing | Wide field of view in the Camera Module 3 family | Wider framing changes composition; it is not an interchangeable-lens camera |
| Camera Module 3 NoIR | Infrared-lit night vision or selected plant-imaging projects | No infrared filter; standard and Wide NoIR variants are available | Dark-scene use requires a separate suitable IR illuminator; visible-light colors differ |
| High Quality Camera | Optics experiments, or projects needing a chosen wide or telephoto lens | 12 MP Sony IMX477 sensor with C/CS-mount or M12-mount variants | You must match the lens mount, image circle, focus and field of view to the camera and project |
| Global Shutter Camera | Fast-moving subjects, machine vision and synchronized capture | 1.6 MP Sony IMX296 global-shutter sensor | Lower pixel count than the 12 MP-class options; short exposures need adequate light |
Raspberry Pi’s camera descriptions and comparison table are the basis for these distinctions; the table is not a head-to-head image-quality test. See Raspberry Pi camera documentation.
How to choose among the five
For a general-purpose camera: Camera Module 3 standard
Start here if you want a compact camera with autofocus for varied everyday scenes and do not need a particularly wide view or a replaceable lens. Its Sony IMX708 sensor is in the 12 MP class, and the module has powered autofocus. Raspberry Pi lists 2304 × 1296 video at up to 56 fps, HDR at 2304 × 1296 and 30 fps, and 1536 × 864 at 120 fps. Those are documented modes, not a promise of a particular result in every lighting condition or software configuration.

Choose the Wide version when you need more of a room, work area or robot’s surroundings in frame. Its defining distinction is field of view, not interchangeable optics. A wider view also changes how large subjects appear in the frame, so it may not suit a project that needs a tighter composition from the same camera position.

For infrared scenes: Camera Module 3 NoIR
NoIR removes the infrared filter, making the camera suitable for use with infrared illumination in dark scenes. The camera does not emit infrared light: night vision in darkness requires a separate IR illuminator. There are standard and Wide NoIR versions, so choose the field of view as well as the infrared variant. Without the filter, color rendition under visible light differs from a standard camera; NoIR is therefore a specialized choice rather than a general upgrade. Raspberry Pi describes plant imaging as another possible use, but the right result depends on the plant, illumination and project.
For lens choice: High Quality Camera
Pick the High Quality (HQ) Camera when selecting optics is part of the project—for example, when you need a particular field of view or want to experiment with lenses. It uses a 12 MP Sony IMX477 sensor and is offered in C/CS-mount and M12-mount variants. A lens must match the camera’s mount; also check that its image circle, focusing range and field of view fit the intended setup. The camera is not automatically better for every use: its advantage is lens flexibility, while Camera Module 3 offers integrated autofocus optics.
Raspberry Pi lists HQ Camera video modes of 2028 × 1080 at 50 fps, 2028 × 1520 at 40 fps, and 1332 × 990 at 120 fps. Consider the specific mode you need rather than comparing frame rates without their resolutions.

For fast motion: Global Shutter Camera
Choose the Global Shutter Camera when reducing rolling-shutter distortion matters more than maximizing pixel count—for example, when capturing a fast-moving object or building a machine-vision setup. Its Sony IMX296 sensor is 1.6 MP, and Raspberry Pi lists video up to 1456 × 1088 at 60 fps. That is a deliberate trade-off against the 12 MP-class modules, not a general-purpose resolution upgrade. Short exposures can help freeze motion but require sufficient light. This model uses a C/CS mount, so lens compatibility matters here too.
Camera Module 3, HQ and Global Shutter: what the specifications mean
Sensor resolution, video modes, lens flexibility and motion rendering answer different questions. A higher pixel count alone does not establish which camera will make the most useful image for a particular project.
| Specification | Camera Module 3 family | High Quality Camera | Global Shutter Camera |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sensor | Sony IMX708 | Sony IMX477 | Sony IMX296 |
| Resolution class | 12 MP class | 12 MP | 1.6 MP |
| Lens arrangement | Integrated fixed optics; standard or Wide view | Interchangeable lens; C/CS or M12 variant | Interchangeable lens; C/CS mount |
| Documented video examples | 2304 × 1296 up to 56 fps; 2304 × 1296 HDR at 30 fps; 1536 × 864 at 120 fps | 2028 × 1080 at 50 fps; 2028 × 1520 at 40 fps; 1332 × 990 at 120 fps | 1456 × 1088 up to 60 fps |
| Motion-related distinction | Not identified as a global-shutter camera | Not identified as a global-shutter camera | Global shutter, intended to reduce rolling-shutter distortion |
Video modes above are those published by Raspberry Pi in its camera documentation, accessed in 2026. They are not directly equivalent measures of image quality: each combines a resolution and frame rate, and the source does not provide comparative lab tests. Raspberry Pi also lists sensor dimensions of 4608 × 2592 pixels for Camera Module 3, 4056 × 3040 for HQ Camera, and 1456 × 1088 for Global Shutter Camera. The published sensor dimensions and the effective still-resolution figures in comparison tables are different measures; do not treat them as interchangeable.

Check Pi and cable compatibility before buying
Raspberry Pi states that its camera modules are compatible with Raspberry Pi computers that have CSI connectors. Compatibility depends on having the camera interface and the correct cable for the board; connector access can vary by model. The camera side uses a standard 15-pin connector. On the Pi board, the connector is standard 15-pin on flagship models through Raspberry Pi 4, and mini 22-pin on Raspberry Pi 5, all Zero models, and Compute Module IO boards. Confirm the exact board and cable before ordering.

Software support and connecting more than one camera
Use Raspberry Pi’s current camera software documentation for setup with the modern libcamera-based stack. Official camera modules are supported there; third-party camera modules may need a device-tree overlay or vendor-specific instructions, so check the exact sensor and module rather than assuming that a connector alone guarantees software support.
Raspberry Pi 5 has two MIPI camera connectors and can connect two cameras directly. On other Raspberry Pi devices with a camera port, a mux can connect multiple cameras, but only one camera on that shared Unicam port can be used at a time.

When an AI Camera is a better specialist choice
The AI Camera is worth considering when the project specifically needs its AI-oriented capabilities. It is a specialist alternative, not a straightforward image-quality upgrade over Camera Module 3, HQ Camera or Global Shutter Camera. Choose it because of the task and software requirements, not because “AI” implies a better ordinary photograph.
Make the choice by project requirement
- Choose Camera Module 3 standard for a practical autofocus starting point.
- Choose Camera Module 3 Wide if fitting more of the scene into the frame is the priority.
- Choose Camera Module 3 NoIR when you will use IR illumination or have a specific infrared-imaging need.
- Choose HQ Camera if selecting and changing lenses is central to the project.
- Choose Global Shutter Camera if capturing fast motion with reduced rolling-shutter distortion outweighs the lower resolution.
For installation and broader project guidance, Raspberry Pi’s Official Raspberry Pi Camera Module Guide, second edition, was announced on 22 November 2024. Raspberry Pi says it covers camera hardware, installation, Picamera2, rpicam applications and AI Kit integration.
