There is no single RAM kit that fits every ASUS ROG Strix laptop and desktop. Find your laptop’s exact model or desktop motherboard model first, then use its ASUS specifications, manual and—where available—memory Qualified Vendor List (QVL) to confirm the memory type, capacity, slots, speed and exact kit part number.
Why the exact ROG Strix model matters
ROG Strix covers laptops and desktop motherboards with different memory generations, form factors, capacities and layouts. The ROG Strix name alone is not enough to choose RAM. ASUS also notes that specifications and procedures vary by model.
For a laptop, look up the exact model’s ASUS product specifications and manual. For a desktop, identify the motherboard model and use that board’s ASUS support page and memory QVL. A QVL entry applies to the board it names; it does not establish compatibility with another Strix device.
Which memory type and generation should you look for?
Laptops: confirm SO-DIMM and DDR generation
Laptop memory commonly uses the smaller SO-DIMM form factor, but do not assume that every ROG Strix laptop uses the same type or DDR generation. ASUS’s ROG India 2024 laptop upgrade article gives DDR5 SO-DIMM as an example for its ROG Strix laptop configuration. That is a model-specific example, not a specification for the entire laptop range.

Desktops: confirm DIMM and the board’s DDR generation
A desktop motherboard uses its own supported memory type and module configuration. ASUS’s ROG Strix B660-A GAMING WIFI D4 QVL lists DDR4 memory, while the ROG Strix B650-A GAMING WIFI and Z890-E GAMING WIFI QVLs provide DDR5 examples. These differences show why you must check the exact board rather than infer the memory generation from the ROG Strix name.
How to verify capacity, slots, speed and kit compatibility
- Identify the exact model. Use the laptop’s model-specific ASUS product information and manual, or the exact motherboard name for a desktop.
- Check the supported memory type. Confirm DDR4 or DDR5 and, for a laptop, the required SO-DIMM form factor. For a desktop board, follow the board’s memory specifications.
- Check the maximum capacity and slot count together. ASUS advises checking the model’s maximum memory capacity, module type and number of slots. Confirm that the total capacity and number of modules you plan to install fit those limits.
- Check supported speed and the exact part number. For a motherboard, look up the board’s memory QVL and match the kit’s complete part number and module configuration. The QVL can list speeds, timings and configurations, but a kit’s advertised speed is not a guarantee of the speed your system will run.
- Prefer a matched kit. ASUS says mixing RAM brands may work, but is not recommended because it can cause compatibility issues or suboptimal performance. Its guidance recommends identical modules.
ASUS’s ROG Strix B650-A GAMING WIFI memory QVL warns: “The system may be unable to run at the maximum supported memory speed due to platform constraints.” Treat the rated module speed as a kit specification, not a promise of the operating speed on your particular system.

These examples do not establish one best capacity, latency or speed for all ROG Strix owners. The right configuration depends on the exact device and what its official specifications support.

- Compatibility: Check DDR generation, SO-DIMM versus DIMM, the exact model’s specifications and—where applicable—the motherboard QVL entry for the full part number.
- Capacity and layout: Compare total capacity and number of modules against the device’s supported capacity and available slots.
- Operating speed: Compare the system’s supported memory speed with the kit’s rated speed. Platform constraints can prevent the system from reaching the kit’s maximum listed speed.
- Matched modules: Favor an identical pair or matched kit rather than combining different brands or specifications.
- Installation requirements: For a laptop, consult its service instructions before deciding whether to install memory yourself.
The ASUS materials cited here do not establish a general gaming-performance gain from upgrading RAM across ROG Strix devices. A specific frame-rate or performance increase cannot be assumed without evidence for the exact system and workload.

Installing laptop RAM and checking whether it is recognized
Follow the instructions for your exact laptop
The following is a summary of the example procedure in ASUS ROG India’s 2024 laptop upgrade article, not a universal disassembly guide. ASUS says model instructions can differ. Use the manual and service guidance for your exact laptop; do not apply a laptop procedure to a desktop motherboard.
- Back up important files, shut down the laptop and unplug it.
- Use the exact model’s instructions to remove the bottom screws and panel. The ASUS example names a size 0 Phillips screwdriver and a guitar pick or plastic piece as tools for that example.
- Locate the memory and release the module’s retention clips.
- Align the module’s notch, insert it at an angle, then press it down until it is secured.
- If you disconnected cables or battery connections, reconnect them as directed by the model instructions. Reassemble the laptop, boot it and check that the expected memory capacity is recognized.
If the laptop does not recognize the new module
- Shut down the laptop and check, using the model’s service instructions, that the module is seated properly.
- Recheck that its memory type and configuration are compatible with the exact laptop.
- If the problem continues, ASUS advises contacting the manufacturer or seeking professional help.
Use this checklist before buying
- Have I identified the exact laptop model or desktop motherboard—not just “ROG Strix”?
- Have I confirmed DDR4 or DDR5 and the required SO-DIMM or DIMM form factor?
- Does the capacity and number of modules fit the model’s supported maximum and available slots?
- For a desktop board, have I checked its current ASUS memory QVL for the exact kit part number and configuration?
- Have I accounted for the possibility that the system may run memory below the kit’s rated maximum speed?
- Do I have model-specific installation instructions, and am I comfortable following them?
Recheck the ASUS specifications, manual and QVL for your exact device before ordering; motherboard QVLs and support information are specific to their model.
