The most useful PS5 changes are a privacy review under Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy and an accessibility review under Settings > Accessibility. Start with a privacy preset, then inspect each visibility and contact control instead of accepting the preset blindly. Turn on only the display, reading, audio, chat or controller features that match your needs. If a child uses the console, review Family and Parental Controls separately because a family manager can control the child’s privacy and communication settings.
These settings are account-linked where Sony specifies, so privacy changes follow the account across devices. Accessibility behavior can depend on the console language, the content being watched, the game, the controller and regional availability. Sony’s current instructions are in the privacy settings guide and the PS5 accessibility guide.
Change privacy first: choose a baseline, then customize it
Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy. You can select a preset privacy level or choose the option to view and customize individual settings. A preset is a starting point, not a universal recommendation: a player who wants to meet people in games has different needs from someone trying to avoid unsolicited messages.

Choose Friend Focused when you want normal play with a known circle but less exposure to strangers. Consider Solo and Focused when avoiding invitations and profile discovery matters more than social features. Use Social and Open or Team Player only when their broader discovery and contact options are intentional.

After choosing a preset, open the detailed controls. Review these categories individually:
- Real name and profile picture: decide who can see them in search results, games and friend suggestions.
- Friends and profile information: limit the players who can view your friends list and other profile details.
- Online activity: control visibility of your online status, current game and gaming history. You can also hide selected games.
- Requests and communication: decide who can ask to be your friend and who can interact with you through parties, games and messages.
- Blocked players: check the accounts you have blocked and add anyone whose contact you do not want.
- Crossplay invitations: review whether to receive invitations from players on other platforms.
Privacy changes are tied to your account and are reflected across devices. For a child family member, a family manager, parent or guardian may set profile controls depending on the parental-control configuration. PlayStation Stars visibility options are available only in supported regions and are unavailable on child accounts. Sony documents these account and regional qualifications in its privacy settings instructions.
Set accessibility options from the main Accessibility menu
Go to Settings > Accessibility. The menu includes display and text controls, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, zoom, controller settings, mono audio and other options. Add Accessibility to the control centre if you want to reach frequently used features without navigating through Settings. A game’s own accessibility choices can be checked in its PlayStation Store game hub; a console option does not guarantee that every game or video service supports the same feature.

Improve reading, contrast and motion comfort
Display and text settings
Under Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound, adjust the options that make menus easier to read or reduce visual strain:
- Increase text size and enable bold text.
- Use high contrast when text and backgrounds are difficult to distinguish.
- Apply colour correction or colour inversion when a colour-vision difference makes interface elements hard to identify.
- Turn on check marks for enabled settings so their status is easier to verify.
- Set an auto-scroll speed that you can comfortably follow.
- Enable reduce motion if animated transitions cause discomfort.
There is an important trade-off: Sony says turning on Invert Colours turns HDR off. If HDR picture quality is a priority, try colour correction, larger text, bold text or high contrast before choosing inversion.
Zoom
Find zoom at Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound > Zoom. After enabling it, engage zoom with the PS button and Square button. Zoom helps with small on-screen text without permanently changing every interface element, but you may need to move the enlarged view to reach controls at the edge of the screen.

Screen reader
The screen reader reads on-screen text and provides spoken guidance for operating the console. Its speech speed, voice type and volume are adjustable. Sony lists these screen-reader languages: Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. The spoken language follows the console language, so change the console language if the reader is speaking a language you cannot use. Sony notes that language availability is limited; the list is not a promise that every regional configuration supports every language.

Closed captions
Enable them at Settings > Accessibility > Closed Captions > Display Closed Captions. In the custom style controls, adjust font size, text colour, edge treatment, text opacity, background colour and opacity, and window colour and opacity. Captions can show both spoken dialogue and audio cues, but only supported content can display them; the program, game or service being watched determines what appears.
Chat transcription
Chat transcription can convert spoken party or supported-game chat to text and can read text that you enter aloud to other players. Sony lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish for this feature. In game chat, transcription works only in games that support it, so the setting cannot add transcription to an incompatible title. Use it when hearing or speaking in voice chat is difficult, and tell party members that text-to-speech may be active before sharing sensitive information.

Mono audio for headphones
Mono audio sends the same sound to both left and right headphone channels, which can help when you listen with one ear or have unequal hearing. Sony’s Canadian instructions place it at Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Headphones > Mono Audio for Headphones. Menu names can differ slightly by system version or region, so follow the closest current labels on your console if that path is arranged differently.
Adapt the controller and haptic feedback
Custom button assignments
Use the controller accessibility controls to remap buttons on a DualSense. Remapping can reduce reach, strength or dexterity demands, but write down the original layout before changing it if another person also uses the console. A game may display its own button prompts based on the remapped layout, so check the result in a safe menu before starting a competitive match.

PS5 can provide haptic feedback while navigating the console. Sony says this requires a selected vibration intensity and a supported controller: DualSense, DualSense Edge or PS VR2 Sense. Lower the intensity when vibration is uncomfortable, or disable it if tactile feedback is distracting. The optional PlayStation Access controller is another physical-control path for people who need a different arrangement; it is not required to change any PS5 software setting.

Use family controls for children
For a child account, open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management, or use the PlayStation Family app. A family manager, parent or guardian can manage the child’s privacy settings and decide which of them the child is allowed to change. Sony says the parent or guardian is notified when these settings are changed.
Restrict communication and user-generated content
The Communication and User-Generated Content control can disable:
- Text messaging and voice chat.
- Sharing the child’s own user-generated content.
- Viewing other players’ user-generated content.
- Linking selected third-party communication services.
A child can request an exception for communication features in a specific game. Review each request in the family controls rather than reopening communication globally, and remember that the game’s own safety and chat tools may still apply.
A practical setup sequence
- Open Privacy: go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy and choose a preset that matches your desired level of discovery.
- Inspect visibility: review real name, profile picture, friends, profile information, online status, current game and gaming history. Hide individual games if needed.
- Inspect contact: set who may send friend requests, party or game invitations, messages and crossplay invitations; check the blocked-player list.
- Open Accessibility: go to Settings > Accessibility and enable only the features that address a real reading, hearing, vision, movement or audio need.
- Test in context: check menus, a supported game and the content you watch. Confirm that captions, transcription, zoom and audio behave as expected before relying on them.
- Set up family management: for a child, use Family Management or the PlayStation Family app, then choose communication and content restrictions and the settings the child may alter.
- Add quick access: place Accessibility in the control centre if you regularly switch captions, zoom, mono audio or other options.
What to check when a feature does not work
- The option is missing: confirm that you are in the account or family profile whose settings you intend to change. Child controls may hide options from the child account.
- A language is unavailable: check the console language and the feature’s supported-language list. Screen reader and chat transcription do not support identical language sets.
- Captions do not appear: verify Display Closed Captions is enabled, then confirm that the video, game or service supports captions.
- Game chat is not transcribed: transcription in game chat requires a supported game; party-chat support does not make every game compatible.
- HDR changed unexpectedly: turning on Invert Colours disables HDR. Use another display adjustment if HDR is important.
- Haptics do not respond: select a vibration intensity and use a supported controller model.
- Privacy still feels too open: return to the detailed controls instead of relying on the preset. A preset can change several categories at once, while individual controls let you close only the channels that create unwanted contact.
Which settings should you change first?
For most adults, the highest-value privacy checks are profile visibility, online activity, friend requests, messages, party and game invitations, and crossplay invitations. For readability, start with text size, bold text, high contrast, colour correction and reduce motion; add zoom or screen reader if those do not provide enough access. For hearing or audio needs, test captions, chat transcription and mono headphone audio in the exact content and language you use. For a child, make Family Management the authority for privacy and communication rather than leaving those decisions to the child account alone.
There is no single best configuration. The right balance depends on whether you value discoverability or limited contact, which information you are comfortable exposing, the language you use, the games and media you access, and whether a family manager must supervise the account.
