Change the controls for the AI service you actually use, not just a single phone-wide switch. On a Pixel, review Gemini Apps Activity, Connected Apps, retention, permissions and location sources. On an iPhone, review Apple Intelligence’s ChatGPT extension, the separate Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence setting, processing visibility and Screen Time restrictions.
These controls govern different data flows. Google’s Gemini settings do not automatically cover every Pixel feature such as on-device components, while Apple Intelligence can decide between on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute. Settings, supported devices and availability can change with OS updates, account eligibility and region, so confirm the labels on your installed software.
What to change first
Use this order if you want a quick privacy check before trying AI features:

- Decide whether activity should be retained. Review Gemini Apps Activity and its Keep Activity and auto-delete choices.
- Review improvement programs separately. On iPhone, Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence is independent of the ChatGPT switch.
- Limit permissions. Check microphone, camera, location and notification access on Android; use Screen Time restrictions on managed iPhones.
- Understand processing limits. Apple may send complex requests to Private Cloud Compute, and Google’s Gemini activity controls are not a demonstrated master switch for all Pixel AI processing.
Do not treat a setting as a universal guarantee that no data leaves the phone. Each feature can have its own service, account and retention rules.

Privacy settings on a Google Pixel using Gemini
1. Review Gemini Apps Activity and Keep Activity
Open Gemini Apps Activity from the Gemini app or your Google Account and inspect whether Keep Activity is enabled. Review the existing activity list before changing the switch; Google lets you delete individual items or activity ranges. The documented auto-delete choices are 3, 18 or 36 months, with 18 months described as the default in the cited instructions. These periods apply to Gemini Apps Activity, not every type of Google or Android data.
Turning Keep Activity off changes retention and use of saved activity, but it does not make Gemini stop processing a prompt. Google says prompts may still be processed to provide answers and for safety purposes. If you need a conversation removed, delete the activity rather than assuming that switching off Keep Activity erases earlier records.
2. Disconnect unnecessary Connected Apps
In Gemini’s Connected Apps or Personal Intelligence controls, inspect every service that can supply information to a response. Depending on eligibility and rollout, the list can include:
- Contacts
- Google Photos
- Google Workspace
- Search services
- YouTube
Disconnect a service when Gemini does not need it for your use case. For example, a user who only wants drafting help may not need Contacts or Photos connected. Availability varies by account, country and rollout, so a missing service does not necessarily mean that the feature is unavailable to everyone.

Disconnecting an app does not delete Gemini Apps Activity that was already created. Deleting data inside the connected app also does not remove the Gemini record. Google warns that some Connected Apps data may be reviewed by trained service providers; do not connect confidential material that you would not want a reviewer to see.
3. Check audio, Live video and screenshare improvement controls
Gemini includes a separate choice for whether audio and Gemini Live videos or screen shares can be used to improve Google services. The cited Google instructions describe this setting as off by default. Verify its current state rather than assuming that the Keep Activity switch controls it. If you turn it on, understand that this is an additional improvement permission, not merely a history setting.
4. Audit Android permissions
Use the phone’s app-permission controls to review what Gemini can access. On current Android versions, the usual route is Settings > Apps > Gemini > Permissions; the exact labels can differ by Pixel software release.

Gemini may receive precise location from another Google service, such as Maps or Android Auto, even when a location choice in the Google app is off. Check the permission at the service supplying the location.
- Microphone: Deny it if you will not use voice conversations or voice input.
- Camera: Deny it if you will not submit images or use visual features.
- Notifications: Turn them off if you do not want Gemini suggestions or activity reminders on the lock screen.
Changing a permission can disable a feature without deleting previous prompts or media. Revisit the permission page after a major Android or Gemini update.

5. Know what these controls do not cover
The documented Gemini controls do not establish a switch for every Pixel-specific, on-device AI component. In particular, the available material does not verify a universal privacy setting for AICore or Gemini Nano. Do not claim that deleting Gemini Apps Activity or disconnecting Connected Apps disables all on-device AI processing. Treat those components as a separate verification question for the exact Pixel model and software build.
Privacy settings on an iPhone using Apple Intelligence
1. Turn off or gate the ChatGPT extension
To disable Apple Intelligence’s ChatGPT extension, go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT and turn off Use ChatGPT. You can instead leave the extension enabled while keeping Confirm ChatGPT Requests on, so Siri asks before sending a request automatically. Apple says it always asks before photos or files are sent.
When a request is sent to ChatGPT, Apple says the request and selected attachments can be accompanied by limited context such as your time zone, country, device type, language and the feature being used. The IP address is obscured, while general location can be supplied for fraud prevention and legal compliance.

Apple says that mode sends the request and limited contextual information and that the provider must not use that information to train models. If you sign in, the account’s settings and the provider’s privacy policies apply instead. That makes account status a material privacy choice, not just a convenience for saving chats.

2. Review Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence
Apple’s improvement program is separate from the ChatGPT extension. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements and review Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence.
Apple describes this as an opt-in collection choice for improving Siri, Dictation, Translate and Apple foundation models. If enabled, interaction data may be retained for up to two years; Apple says a small subset that is reviewed may persist longer. Those periods describe this particular improvement data, not every Apple Intelligence request or all iPhone analytics.
Apple’s privacy notice says, “Your request history is not used to build a marketing profile, and is never sold to anyone.” That statement applies in the context of the opt-in Siri and Dictation request-history process described by Apple, so do not extend it to unrelated third-party account policies.

3. Understand on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute
Apple says that when you make a request, Apple Intelligence first analyzes whether it can be processed on the device. More complex requests may be sent to Private Cloud Compute. This is an architectural privacy measure, not a setting that guarantees every request remains on the iPhone.

The Apple Intelligence Report, where available on your software version, can show requests processed off device, including supported ChatGPT extension requests. Use it to understand what happened after the fact; it does not replace the ChatGPT, improvement or permission controls.
4. Apply a broader restriction with Screen Time
For a child’s phone, a managed device or a temporary lockout, use Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Intelligence & Siri. This area can disallow selected Apple Intelligence features or Intelligence Extensions. It is broader than turning off ChatGPT alone and is useful when you want a policy enforced for other users of the device.
5. Check eligibility and regional limits
Apple Intelligence is limited to supported iPhone models, languages and regions. The ChatGPT extension is available only where ChatGPT is available. The cited instructions are for an iOS 26 guide, but Apple can rename paths or change requirements in later releases. If a control is missing, check the installed iOS version, device model, Apple Account region and language before concluding that the feature is broken.
How the Pixel and iPhone controls differ
The settings are not equivalent switches. They govern different providers, data sources and processing paths.

A practical privacy setup for common situations
If you want the least connected setup
- On Pixel, disconnect every Gemini Connected App you do not need, review permissions and choose an auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity.
- On iPhone, turn off Use ChatGPT, leave Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence off unless you intentionally want to contribute data, and apply Screen Time restrictions if other people use the device.
If you want convenience but a confirmation step
- On Pixel, keep only the Connected Apps that directly support your tasks and leave microphone or camera access denied until needed.
- On iPhone, keep Use ChatGPT on but enable Confirm ChatGPT Requests. Remember that Siri will still ask before sending photos or files, and signed-in account policies will govern a signed-in ChatGPT extension.
If you handle confidential work
- Do not connect confidential Google apps to Gemini when you would not accept possible human review of Connected Apps data.
- Do not paste secrets, regulated records or client-identifying material into an AI feature merely because a history switch is off; Google states that prompts can still be processed to provide answers and for safety.
- On iPhone, inspect the Apple Intelligence Report and keep third-party extensions disabled unless the data flow is approved by your organization.
What to recheck after an update
AI privacy controls are unusually volatile. After an Android, iOS or app update, verify:
- Whether the menu names and locations changed.
- Whether a new Connected App, Intelligence Extension or permission appeared.
- Whether your device, language or region gained or lost eligibility.
- Whether Keep Activity, auto-delete, improvement and confirmation choices retained their previous state.
- Whether a work or family administrator applied a policy that overrides your personal choice.
Vendor documentation describes intended processing and available controls, not an independent guarantee of privacy. Use the narrowest permissions and connections that still let you accomplish the task, and treat each AI feature as a separate service until its own settings say otherwise.
