Start with the permissions that expose your location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts and calendar. Review them app by app, replace precise location with approximate location when practical, and remove access that is not needed. Then check the separate controls for cross-app tracking, advertising identifiers and location history.
The menu names differ between Android, iPhone, Mac and Windows, and Windows controls do not always cover traditional desktop software. Use the platform-specific paths below, preserving access for features you deliberately use.
Use this order for the highest-value privacy review
- Audit sensitive permissions. Check location, camera, microphone, photos or media, contacts and calendar for every installed app.
- Narrow location access. Prefer “while using” access and approximate location unless a function genuinely needs precision.
- Inspect activity history. Use Android’s Privacy Dashboard and Windows’ recent-location information to spot unexpected access.
- Separate tracking from permissions. Review iPhone cross-app tracking, Android Ad Privacy and Windows advertising ID independently; none is a universal anti-tracking switch.
- Check account and desktop exceptions. Location history may be stored in an account cloud, and Windows desktop programs may use their own controls.
Audit app permissions before changing global settings
Permissions are the most direct controls because they govern access to a sensor or data category. A flashlight should not need contacts, a weather app may need a general area but not an exact position, and a photo editor may need selected photos rather than an entire library. Removing an unnecessary permission can disable a feature, so make each change with the app’s intended function in mind.
Location
Choose the narrowest useful level: one-time access where offered, “while using the app” instead of continuous background access, and approximate rather than precise location when a general area is enough. Navigation, emergency features and some delivery or ride services can require precision.

Camera and microphone
Allow these only for functions that use them, such as video calls, scanning or recording. Revoke access from apps that have no credible reason to capture images or sound. Android displays green indicators when the camera or microphone is in use and offers system controls to disable either sensor.
Photos, contacts and calendar
These categories can reveal relationships, routines and personal records. Grant access only when the feature needs it. If the operating system offers a choice between selected items and the entire library, use the smaller selection.
Android: review Privacy, permissions and the dashboard
Android labels vary by manufacturer and release, but the controls are generally grouped under Settings and then Privacy or Security & privacy.

- Open Settings.
- Choose Privacy or Security & privacy, then Permission manager. If the label is different, search Settings for “Permission manager.”
- Open each sensitive category—location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos or media, and calendar.
- For every app, select the least permissive option that still supports the feature. Remove access from apps that do not need it.
Android can automatically reset permissions for unused apps. Treat that as a safety net, not a substitute for an audit: an app you use occasionally may still retain access between uses.

2. Set location precision and timing
For each location-enabled app, use approximate location when a broad area is sufficient. Choose “while using the app” rather than continuous access unless background operation is intentional. Keep precise, ongoing access for functions such as turn-by-turn navigation that cannot work reliably with a rough area.
3. Check Privacy Dashboard activity
Open Settings > Privacy (or Security & privacy) and select Privacy Dashboard. Google’s help documentation says the dashboard can show permission use for the last seven days on Android 13 and the last 24 hours on Android 12. Because the history window depends on the Android version, an older device may show less activity than a newer one.
Use the timeline to investigate an app that accessed a sensor at an unexpected time. A legitimate background task may explain the event; otherwise, reduce or remove the permission and watch whether the app still works.

4. Review Android’s ad-related controls
Search Settings for Ad Privacy. Android describes controls that limit certain uses of data for advertising, but they do not promise that all advertising or every form of tracking will stop. Keep this review separate from sensor permissions: an app can have no location access and still use information from its account, website activity or other services.

iPhone: control location, precise location and cross-app tracking
1. Review each app under Privacy & Security
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Open Location Services and inspect the list of apps.
- For each app, choose the appropriate access level, such as never, ask next time, while using or always, where those choices are offered.
- Turn off Precise Location when the app only needs an approximate area.
Apple notes that some apps may not work unless Location Services is enabled. If a feature breaks, restore the smallest access level that makes it function instead of enabling location for every app.
2. Stop unwanted cross-app tracking requests
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
- Review the decisions listed for individual apps.
- Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track if you do not want apps to present these requests in the future.
This setting addresses cross-app tracking permission requests. It is distinct from location access, website cookies, account-level data collection and advertising choices inside an individual service.
3. Check other sensitive categories
From Privacy & Security, open Camera, Microphone, Photos, Contacts and Calendars. Remove access that is not tied to a feature you use. Revisit these lists after installing a new app or after a major iOS update.

Audit location access
- Open the Location Services list.
- Review each application’s access and turn off entries that do not need location.
- Keep access for functions you intentionally use, such as mapping or location-aware automation.
Review Significant Locations & Routes
Apple’s guide describes Significant Locations as encrypted information used for personalization across Apple devices. You can turn the feature off and clear its history. This is a location-history decision, not the same as granting an individual Mac application permission to query your current position.
The Mac controls documented here focus on location. Do not assume that an iPhone setting has an identical Mac equivalent; inspect the Mac’s own Privacy & Security categories.

Windows 11 places most built-in controls under Settings > Privacy & security. Microsoft states that when access is turned off for an app, that app cannot use the related data or feature. The statement applies to the Windows app-capability setting; it does not guarantee that every traditional desktop program is listed there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Review capability permissions
- Open Settings > Privacy & security.
- Open Camera, Microphone, Location, Contacts and Calendar one at a time.
- Turn off access for apps that do not need the capability.
- Check both the device-level switch and the individual app list where Windows provides both.
These lists mostly cover Microsoft Store apps. Traditional desktop applications may not appear and may require a privacy setting inside the program itself. Check the application’s preferences and its account or web dashboard when it is absent from Windows’ list.

2. Inspect location access and cloud-stored last-known location
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
- Review device and user location access and the individual app controls.
- Inspect the recent precise-location access shown on the page, when available.
- If you are signed in to a Microsoft account, review account location activity. Microsoft says a signed-in user’s last-known location may be saved to the account cloud when location services are enabled; clear that activity if you do not want it retained there.
3. Limit advertising ID and app-launch tracking
Open Settings > Privacy & security > General. Consider turning off the advertising ID and app-launch tracking options. Disabling the advertising ID limits use of that identifier; Microsoft says it does not reduce the number of ads and does not cover every form of interest-based advertising. You may therefore see just as many ads, but with less use of that particular identifier.
4. Account for Windows 10’s support status
Microsoft Support reports that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 uses different menu paths and may not receive the same privacy improvements. If the computer still runs Windows 10, verify each setting in its own interface and plan a supported operating-system upgrade rather than assuming Windows 11 instructions will match.
Location deserves a separate, deliberate decision
Location settings combine several choices that are easy to confuse:
| Choice | What it controls | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Approximate location | A general area rather than an exact position | Weather, local news and other features that do not need a precise point |
| Precise location | A more exact position | Navigation and functions whose result depends on your exact location |
| While using | Access while the app is open or actively in use | Most apps that need location only during an interaction |
| Background or always | Access when the app is not on screen | Only when you intentionally need background updates, automation or safety functions |
Do not disable location globally simply to avoid reviewing it. Global shutdown can break navigation, emergency features and other functions you rely on. App-by-app choices preserve those benefits while reducing unnecessary exposure.
Understand what these controls cannot do
- Permissions are not a complete privacy policy. An app can collect information you provide, receive data from its account service or observe activity on its own website without using a blocked sensor.
- Cross-app tracking is not the same as location tracking. iPhone’s Tracking control concerns requests to track you across other companies’ apps and websites; it does not replace location or microphone settings.
- Ad personalization is not ad volume. Turning off an advertising identifier or an ad-personalization option does not mean fewer advertisements will appear.
- Windows app lists have scope limits. A desktop program that is not in the Store-app list may still have camera, microphone or location controls of its own.
- History windows are finite. Android’s documented Privacy Dashboard period is seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12, so an older event may no longer be visible.
A practical maintenance routine
After installing an app
Decline optional permissions during setup. Open the app once, identify the feature that fails, and grant only the permission required for that feature. Recheck the app’s entry after an update if its behavior or purpose changes.
Monthly or quarterly
Sort permission lists mentally by risk: camera, microphone, precise location, contacts, photos and calendar. Remove access from apps you no longer use. Review Android’s dashboard or Windows’ recent-location list for surprises.
When a feature stops working
- Identify the exact function that failed.
- Restore only its related permission, preferably as approximate or while using.
- Test the function.
- If it still fails, look for an in-app privacy or account setting rather than enabling every permission.
When you sell, lend or replace a device
Remove accounts, erase the device using its platform reset procedure and revoke access for apps you no longer control. Permission changes on the old device do not erase data that a service has already stored in an account.
