If your Alexa-enabled tablet is an Amazon Fire tablet, start with four controls: turn off Hands-Free Mode if you do not want wake-word activation, shorten or disable saved Alexa voice history, decide whether recordings may be used to improve Alexa, and review Fire tablet’s separate app-usage collection setting. These controls affect different data and functions, so changing one does not replace the others.
The instructions below apply to Fire tablets with Alexa. Exact labels and locations can vary by tablet model, Fire OS version, Show Mode status, and the active user profile.
What each privacy control changes
Amazon places Alexa controls in more than one location. The microphone wake-word switch is on the tablet; history and recording-use choices are account controls in Alexa Privacy; and third-party app-usage collection is a broader Fire tablet setting. Use this comparison before changing anything:

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hands-Free Mode | Whether the tablet responds to the Alexa wake word | Tablet Settings, Quick Actions, or the volume-button shortcut | Alexa can still be opened manually by pressing and holding Home when not in Show Mode | That tablet and profile |
| Review Alexa History | Stored recordings, transcripts, typed requests, and Alexa responses | Alexa app or Alexa Privacy on the web | Alexa continues to work; deleting data is processed over time rather than instantly | Amazon account history |

How Alexa activation works on a Fire tablet
Amazon says Fire tablets use on-device keyword spotting to listen for the wake word. The tablet does not send the ongoing microphone stream to the cloud merely because the feature is enabled. When the wake word is detected, the tablet sends the request to Amazon’s cloud, including a fraction of a second of audio from immediately before the wake word. This pre-wake segment helps capture the beginning of a request.

Amazon’s Fire tablet help explains the recording indicator this way: “You’ll always know when Alexa is recording and sending your request to Amazon’s secure cloud because a blue light bar appears on your tablet.” The blue light bar is therefore an indicator that Alexa has detected activation and is sending a request, not evidence that every sound in the room is continuously uploaded.
Some Fire tablets may not detect the wake word while the screen is off and the tablet is not connected to power. That behavior can make hands-free availability seem inconsistent and is separate from the privacy choices below. Amazon documents these activation details in Learn About Using Alexa on Your Fire Tablet and its Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs.
Turn off Alexa Hands-Free Mode when you do not want wake-word activation
This is the most immediate privacy change if the tablet is in a bedroom, shared room, or another place where an accidental wake word would be unwelcome. With Hands-Free Mode off, the tablet will not respond to the Alexa wake word until you turn the feature on again.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Alexa.
- Tap Hands-Free Mode.
- Switch the setting off.
The path is documented by Amazon for Fire tablets. If your model or Fire OS release uses slightly different wording, search Settings for “Hands-Free” or “Alexa.”
Use Quick Actions
Amazon also provides a microphone/camera control in Quick Actions while the tablet is in Show Mode. Outside Show Mode, Quick Actions includes a Hands Free control. Open Quick Actions from the tablet’s system controls and tap that control to disable hands-free activation.
Use the hardware shortcut
Press and hold the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons together for three seconds. Amazon documents this as a way to turn Hands-Free Mode off without navigating through Settings.
Disabling Hands-Free Mode trades convenience for a narrower activation path. Outside Show Mode, you can still access Alexa by pressing and holding the Home button, so this setting blocks wake-word responses rather than removing Alexa entirely. You must re-enable Hands-Free Mode before voice activation will work again.
Review and delete Alexa history
Hands-free control and stored history are separate. Turning off the microphone wake word does not erase requests that are already associated with your Amazon account. To inspect what Alexa has retained, use the history view.

- Tap Review Alexa History.
You can also open amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings. Amazon says this view can include voice recordings, text transcripts, typed requests, and Alexa’s responses. Reviewing the entries is useful when you suspect a false wake: the history can show what Alexa interpreted and when it happened.
From the history controls, you can delete recordings, transcripts, and typed requests associated with your account. Deletion is not necessarily immediate. Amazon says a deletion request takes time to process, and it may not remove every related item. In particular, related records or attachments, information held by a skill or outside Amazon’s cloud, de-identified information, and models that have already been trained using data may not all be removed by the same request.
For that reason, treat history deletion as removal of eligible account records, not as a guarantee that every derivative or third-party copy disappears instantly. If you share a tablet, review history under each user profile that uses Alexa rather than assuming one profile’s cleanup covers the others.

Choose how long Alexa keeps voice recordings
In Alexa Privacy, Amazon offers retention choices that are different from manually deleting individual entries. The available periods described by Amazon are:
| Choice | What it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Delete recordings automatically after 3 months | Schedules eligible voice recordings for automatic deletion after three months | This is an account setting, not a claim that every associated record is erased at exactly three months |
| Delete recordings automatically after 18 months | Keeps recordings longer before automatic deletion | Provides a longer history window for review and personalization than the three-month option |
| Do not save voice recordings | Amazon says audio is deleted after processing | Transcripts and typed requests are retained for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat |
How to change the retention choice
- Open the Alexa app and tap More.
- Tap Alexa Privacy.
- Open the controls for Alexa data or voice-recording history.
- Select the 3-month, 18-month, or no-saved-recordings option and confirm the change.
The exact confirmation wording can vary by account and software version. Amazon warns that choosing a shorter retention period or no saved recordings may reduce personalization or limit some Alexa features that depend on stored history.
The “not save voice recordings” option does not mean that no text exists. Amazon’s stated behavior is that audio is deleted after processing, while transcripts and typed requests remain for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat. That distinction matters if your goal is to minimize both audio and text records: you may still need to use Review Alexa History to remove eligible text sooner.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether recordings can be used to improve Alexa
Retention answers “how long is data kept?” A different control answers “may recordings be used to improve services and develop features?” Keep these decisions separate.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap More.
- Choose Alexa Privacy.
- Tap Manage Your Alexa Data.
- Review the setting governing use of voice recordings for service improvement and feature development, then choose the available opt-out or participation option.
You can reach the same privacy controls through amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings. Changing this setting does not turn off Hands-Free Mode and does not delete existing Alexa history. If you want fewer recordings stored, change retention separately; if you want recordings excluded from improvement work, change this control separately.

Review Fire tablet’s separate app-usage collection setting
Fire OS includes a broader privacy control that is not an Alexa-history setting. To review it, open Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data.
Amazon describes the relevant information as when third-party apps are opened, closed, and used, including duration. Turn the setting off if you do not want that app-usage information collected under this control.
There are three limits to understand before relying on it as a general privacy switch:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Turning it off does not stop all data processing on the tablet.
- It does not affect data associated with Amazon services such as Prime Video.
- It does not itself control interest-based advertising.
This setting therefore complements, rather than replaces, the Alexa controls. Amazon explains the distinction in its Privacy Settings FAQs for Fire TV Products, Fire Tablets and Kindle E-readers.
Apply the settings to every profile and check after updates
Amazon describes these privacy settings as device-specific. A Fire tablet with multiple user profiles may require each profile to be configured separately. Switch to each profile that uses Alexa, review Hands-Free Mode and Alexa Privacy, and then check the app-usage setting for that profile.
Menu names and available choices can change with the tablet model, Fire OS version, account configuration, or whether Show Mode is active. If a documented path is missing, update the tablet, leave Show Mode, or search Settings for the control name. Do not assume that a setting changed on one Fire tablet automatically changes another tablet using the same Amazon account.

Quick Recap
- Disable Hands-Free Mode if you want to prevent wake-word responses except when you deliberately use the Home-button shortcut.
- Open Review Alexa History and remove recordings, transcripts, or typed requests you no longer want associated with the account.
- Choose a retention period: three months, 18 months, or no saved voice recordings, understanding what text remains under the last option.
- Review Manage Your Alexa Data and decide whether recordings may be used for service improvement and feature development.
- Check Collect App Usage Data separately if you also want to limit collection about third-party app opening, closing, and duration.
- Repeat the review for every user profile and any other Fire tablet on which the account is used.
