Before an AI agent opens a website, reads a connected account, or acts on your behalf, change the controls that determine model improvement, temporary-session use, memory, app permissions, browser/device access, and location sharing. Give the agent only the access and instructions required for one task.
Do not treat “not used for training” as “not stored.” Training, chat history, memory, connected-app data, and safety retention are separate controls. The exact labels and retention rules depend on the provider, plan, region, and whether you use a managed workspace.
Use this pre-session privacy checklist
Run these checks before an agent receives a prompt or signs in to a site:

- Choose a temporary or incognito session for a one-off sensitive task, then read its retention limits.
- Review memory and personalization separately. Remove saved details and disable custom instructions that the task does not need.
- Enable only the required apps or connectors. Check whether each integration can read, write, share, delete, or change settings.
- Inspect browser and device permissions. Review logged-in websites, location, screen, camera, microphone, and browser access.
- Use a narrow prompt and supervise consequential steps. Never paste passwords or private keys into a chat.
- Clean up afterward. Clear remote-browser data and delete chats, screenshots, or connected access when the service provides those controls.
These steps reduce exposure; they cannot make an agent risk-free. An agent with a valid login can still see whatever that account can see and may be able to change or share data.

Turn off model improvement when you do not want new chats used for training
Model-training controls govern whether new conversations can be used to improve a provider’s models. They do not automatically erase saved chats, uploaded files, screenshots, or memories. Treat deletion as a separate operation.
ChatGPT personal accounts
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls → “Improve the model for everyone”. Turning this off prevents new conversations from being used to train models, but existing conversations remain in chat history until you delete them. If an agent task contains sensitive information, delete the resulting chat separately after you finish.
Managed workspaces
OpenAI states that Business, Enterprise, and Education workspace content is not used to train models by default. That default does not mean every connected service has identical handling, so still inspect workspace connector permissions and your organization’s retention policy. A personal account and a managed workspace should not be assumed to have the same controls.

Claude consumer accounts
Anthropic’s consumer guidance (March 16, 2026) says chats and coding sessions may be used to improve Claude when a user opts in, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or when the user otherwise explicitly opts in. The relevant choice is therefore not equivalent to a blanket promise that no data can ever be reviewed. Check the current Model Improvement setting and any feedback choice before starting a sensitive session.
Use temporary or incognito mode for a one-off sensitive task
A temporary mode changes several behaviors at once, but it has defined limits. Choose it when you do not need the conversation in your normal history or want it to update your profile.

ChatGPT Temporary Chat
ChatGPT Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while they are temporary. OpenAI says they may nevertheless be retained for safety purposes for up to 30 days. Temporary Chat is therefore not an instant-erasure mode.
Personalization can still be enabled for a temporary chat. Before sending the prompt, check the personalization or memory option and turn it off if existing memories are not needed. A temporary session that can use your saved profile still has a wider context than many people expect.

Claude Incognito
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. That is a provider-specific rule, not a general definition of “incognito” across all AI services. Confirm what history, safety retention, files, and feedback storage still apply to your account.
Separate memory and personalization from training
Memory controls decide what the assistant can carry from earlier conversations; training controls decide whether conversations may be used to improve a model. Turning off one does not automatically turn off the other.
What to review
- Saved memories about your identity, health, finances, workplace, family, or preferences.
- Custom instructions that describe how you work or what the assistant should assume.
- Conversation history or profile context that an agent may use to interpret a task.
- Memory access granted to connected apps or connectors.
Delete details that are irrelevant to the current job, and disable memory or personalization when the task involves another person’s confidential information. Connected apps may receive relevant memories and conversation context when those features are enabled, so review both the assistant’s memory page and each app’s permission screen.

Audit connected apps and connectors before enabling them
An integration expands the data boundary beyond the AI provider. OpenAI’s connected-app explanation says an enabled app may receive relevant conversation context, relevant memories, and basic visit information such as your IP address, device or browser type, language, region, or approximate location. The app’s own terms and privacy policy then govern its processing.

- Read access: Which messages, documents, calendars, drives, or records can it retrieve?
- Write access: Can it create, edit, move, or delete files or records?
- Sharing access: Can it send email, publish a document, invite collaborators, or disclose a link?
- Account access: Can it change settings, security options, billing details, or recovery information?
- Context transfer: Does the app receive the full conversation, selected messages, memory, or only a result?
Enable only the connector needed for the current task, then disconnect it when finished. OpenAI’s agent guidance states: “Enable only the apps needed for the current task.” For personal Free, Plus, Go, and Pro users, information accessed from apps may be used to train models when “Improve the model for everyone” is on. For Business, Enterprise, and Education users, connector information is not used to train models by default. Those account categories do not eliminate the app’s own retention or sharing rules.
Restrict browser, website, device, and location access
An agent operating a browser can inherit the power of your active sessions. Before takeover, sign out of unrelated sites, close extra tabs, and use a separate browser profile when practical.
Logged-in websites
List every site the agent can reach and ask whether the task truly requires it. Email, cloud storage, project systems, shopping accounts, and administrative consoles often contain more information than the prompt mentions. Remove unnecessary site access and avoid giving an agent an open-ended instruction such as “handle everything.”
Location and basic device information
Review location sharing in the service and your operating system. OpenAI’s consumer privacy information says precise location sharing is a setting users can turn off. An app may still receive approximate location or regional information, so check the connector’s disclosure separately.

Screen, camera, microphone, and browser permissions
Grant screen capture, camera, microphone, or broad browser control only for the step that needs it. Revoke those permissions after the session. If a task unexpectedly asks for a new permission, pause and verify why it is necessary instead of accepting automatically.
Keep prompts narrow and supervise sensitive actions
Privacy depends on instructions as well as settings. Tell the agent exactly what to inspect, what it may change, and what requires your approval.
Use takeover for secrets
Do not place passwords, one-time codes, private keys, full payment-card numbers, or identity documents in a normal prompt. Where the service offers a supervised takeover flow, enter sensitive values yourself while the agent waits. The agent should receive the outcome it needs, not the secret itself.
Require confirmation for consequences
Ask the agent to stop before sending messages, sharing files, changing account settings, making purchases, deleting records, or submitting forms. Review the exact recipient, content, scope, and destination before approving.
Stop on suspicious behavior
End the task if the agent requests unrelated credentials, follows instructions embedded in an untrusted page, opens an unexpected site, or attempts an action outside your prompt. OpenAI warns that an agent signed in to websites or connected apps may access emails, files, or account settings and perform actions such as sharing files or changing settings.

Clean up after a sensitive agent session
- End browser takeover and sign out of sites that do not need to remain open.
- Clear remote-browser data if the service provides a clear-history, cookies, or session-reset command.
- Disconnect temporary apps or connectors and revoke permissions in the external service if required.
- Delete the agent chat and screenshots when you no longer need them. OpenAI says deleted ChatGPT agent chats and associated screenshots are deleted from its systems within 90 days.
- Remove memories created during the task and check custom instructions for accidental additions.
- Review the external account for sent messages, shared files, new permissions, changed settings, or active sessions.
Deletion in one system does not erase copies held by a connected app, an email recipient, a shared drive, or a safety-review process. Follow each service’s deletion and retention controls.
Provider and plan differences you must not overlook
The same label—“private,” “temporary,” or “not used for training”—can mean different things. Use this comparison as a decision aid, not as a universal policy:

These distinctions cover only the documented cases above; they are not a complete comparison of every agent provider or product tier. Recheck the live control labels before a high-sensitivity task because policies, regions, and workspace settings change.

What to do in common situations
You need an agent to summarize a private document
Use a temporary or incognito session if suitable, disable model improvement and personalization, connect only the storage location containing that document, and prevent write or sharing permissions. Delete the chat and disconnect the storage app afterward.
You need an agent to update a work system
Prefer a managed workspace with an administrator-approved connector. Limit the agent to the specific project, require confirmation before edits or messages, and avoid exposing unrelated email or drive folders.
You must log in to complete the task
Use supervised takeover for the password and one-time code, keep the agent away from password managers and recovery settings, and sign out or revoke the session when done.
The agent asks for an unexpected permission
Stop immediately. Read the permission scope, cancel the task if the request is broader than the stated goal, and review recent account activity for changes already made.

Change data-use, temporary-session, memory, connector, browser, device, and location settings before an AI agent starts work. The safest practical configuration is a narrow task, no unnecessary memory, only the required app, supervised entry of secrets, confirmation before consequential actions, and deliberate cleanup afterward. Training opt-outs and temporary modes reduce particular forms of use; neither replaces permission review or supervision.
