Use a built-in privacy display or a correctly fitted physical filter to limit side-angle viewing. Then tune brightness, text size, contrast, transparency and color appearance for your own eyes. Brightness, True Tone, Night Shift, dark appearance, inversion and color filters can change how a screen looks, but they do not create side-angle privacy.
Start by separating privacy from readability
Two different problems are often described as a “privacy display” problem. The first is visual privacy: preventing someone beside you from reading the screen. The second is readability: making text, controls and images comfortable to see. They need different settings.
A built-in privacy display is the control most directly intended for side-angle privacy. Microsoft describes the Surface integrated privacy screen as reducing the visibility of on-screen content from side angles while maintaining readability for the main user. That description applies to supported Surface devices, not automatically to every laptop, tablet or phone.
Brightness and accessibility controls solve a different problem. They can make your view clearer or more comfortable, but they do not narrow the display’s viewing angle. On some Surface models, brightness is also a trade-off: raising it can improve the front view while making the screen easier to see from the side. Lowering it may reduce side visibility but make your own text harder to read.

How side-angle privacy displays work
A privacy display uses a viewing-angle treatment so the person directly in front of the panel can see the image while people farther to the side see a dimmed, darkened or otherwise obscured version. The effect depends on the device, the selected angle, brightness and surrounding light. It is not a guarantee that every character is invisible to every observer.
Use the built-in feature when your device supports it
On a supported Surface device, enable the integrated privacy option using the display or privacy control provided for that model and then check the result from the positions that matter. Microsoft’s product guidance is intentionally device-specific; do not assume that a similarly named setting on another display uses the same hardware or has the same viewing behavior.
Test the screen while displaying the material you actually handle: a password field, an email, a spreadsheet and a document with large headings can look different from a blank desktop. Ask a colleague to move slowly from directly in front of you toward each side, or use a mirror or camera positioned at likely observer angles. Check both portrait and landscape orientations if the device rotates.
Understand the privacy/readability compromise
Begin with a brightness level that lets you read without squinting. Then inspect the display from the side. If an observer can still make out content, reduce brightness slightly and repeat the front-view check. If your own view becomes tiring, increase brightness only as much as needed and improve legibility with larger or bolder text and stronger contrast rather than relying on brightness alone.
Ambient conditions matter. A bright window behind you, overhead reflections or a dark room can change what an observer sees. Recheck the setting when you move between an office, a train, an aircraft cabin and a café. Treat the privacy display as a risk-reduction measure, not as a substitute for locking the device, positioning the screen carefully or hiding sensitive content.

Set brightness for the room, then verify privacy
On Surface and other computers
Use the device’s brightness slider or keyboard controls to establish a comfortable front view. Do not choose the lowest possible brightness solely to hide the screen: if you cannot read comfortably, you are likely to enlarge windows, lean closer or disable the privacy feature. After each change, perform the side-angle test again because brightness can alter the apparent strength of an integrated privacy screen.
- Face the display squarely and read normal-size text.
- Check the left and right angles where another person could stand.
- Repeat with reflective light or a bright background behind you.
- Choose the lowest brightness that remains comfortable for your work and does not reveal more detail than you accept from the side.
On iPhone
Apple documents manual brightness adjustment in Control Center and in Settings > Display & Brightness. Automatic Brightness is under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness. The ambient-light sensor adjusts the level for current lighting; it does not detect whether someone is looking over your shoulder.

Whichever mode you use, check the actual phone from the side. A brighter phone can be easier for you to read and easier for a nearby person to read as well.
Improve text readability without claiming privacy
Increase size and weight first
When small text is the problem, enlarge it before applying unusual color effects. On Apple devices, use Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Larger Text, enable larger accessibility sizes if needed, and turn on Bold Text when character strokes are too light. Some apps have their own text-size controls, and web pages may respond to browser zoom.
Apple’s Dynamic Type guidance describes a systemwide text-size approach so supported interfaces can scale for comfort and legibility. Not every app honors every accessibility size, so inspect the applications you use for sensitive work. A larger setting can cause buttons or table columns to wrap; verify that you can still identify the correct control before relying on it.

Increase contrast and reduce transparency
In Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, Increase Contrast can make foreground elements more distinct from their backgrounds. Reduce Transparency replaces some translucent backgrounds with more solid surfaces, which can help text remain legible over changing wallpaper or blurred panels.

These options are especially useful when a privacy display or a dimmed screen makes edges look less distinct. They improve your view; they do not make the interface unreadable to someone at the side.
Know what color and appearance controls actually do
True Tone
True Tone automatically adapts display color and intensity to the ambient light. It can make white backgrounds appear more natural as the room’s lighting changes. It is an appearance and comfort control, not a side-angle privacy mechanism. If accurate color matters for photography, design or color-coded information, compare the result with True Tone on and off before choosing.
Night Shift
Night Shift moves colors toward the warmer end of the spectrum. You can enable it manually or schedule it in Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift. A warmer tint may feel more comfortable in the evening, but it does not prevent a person beside you from seeing the same content.
Dark appearance
Dark appearance changes supported interfaces to darker backgrounds and lighter foreground elements. It can reduce perceived glare in a dim room, although bright icons, white text or reflective glass may still be conspicuous. Some websites and apps retain their own themes, so dark appearance is not a universal transformation and provides no viewing-angle protection.

Smart Invert and Classic Invert
Apple distinguishes between the two inversion modes. Smart Invert reverses many interface colors while generally leaving images, media and some apps using dark color styles unchanged. Classic Invert reverses all colors. Neither mode hides text from a side observer. Inversion can also make color-coded status indicators, photographs and screenshots harder to interpret.
Color Filters
Color Filters can tint the display or adjust colors for particular color-vision needs. Apple cautions that filters may change how images and video appear. Use them when they solve a specific visual-accessibility problem, then verify that charts, warning colors, photographs and video remain understandable. Do not treat a tint as a privacy filter.
Schedule Night Shift without unwanted location dependence
Apple’s Sunset to Sunrise Night Shift option uses clock and geolocation information to determine when night begins. It is unavailable when Location Services or the Setting Time Zone service is turned off. This dependency concerns scheduling only; it is not a privacy risk caused by the display itself.
If you do not want Night Shift to rely on location-related settings, choose a custom schedule in the Night Shift controls or turn it on manually. A custom schedule also gives you predictable behavior when you work across time zones, travel or keep irregular hours.

A removable filter can add side-angle privacy to a device without an integrated feature. It is an optional accessory, not a setting that can be enabled on every screen. The cited example is designed for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, so it cannot establish compatibility with other iPhone models, laptops or tablets.

Check fit before buying
- Match the exact device model, not just the screen size or product family.
- Confirm the aspect ratio, diagonal dimensions, edge shape and orientation.
- Check whether a case, screen protector, camera cutout or speaker opening interferes.
- Verify that Face ID, touch input, stylus use and the front camera still work as expected.
- Read the maker’s installation and removal instructions; adhesive and magnetic designs have different trade-offs.
A filter can reduce brightness and narrow the comfortable front viewing angle. Recheck text size and brightness after installation, and test the result from both sides. For a laptop or monitor, search by the exact model and dimensions rather than assuming that a phone accessory or a generic “universal” label will fit.
A practical setup sequence
- Identify the threat. Decide whether the concern is a person beside you, glare, small text, low contrast or color discomfort. Do not start with Night Shift or inversion if the real issue is side-angle viewing.
- Enable the privacy mechanism. Turn on the supported integrated privacy display, or install a filter that matches the exact device.
- Set a comfortable front view. Adjust brightness for the current room, then enlarge or bold text before making the screen excessively bright.
- Check likely observer positions. Test both sides, standing and seated positions, and any angle created by a neighboring desk or travel seat.
- Improve contrast. Use Increase Contrast or Reduce Transparency when interface layers blend together.
- Choose appearance controls deliberately. Enable True Tone, Night Shift, dark appearance, inversion or color filters only for comfort or accessibility, and verify that important colors and media remain meaningful.
- Review automation. Decide whether Auto-Brightness and Sunset to Sunrise scheduling suit your routine. Use manual or custom controls when you need predictable behavior.
- Recheck after changes. Brightness, orientation, a new case, room lighting or an operating-system update can change the practical result.
Common mistakes and fixes
“Night Shift should hide my screen.”
It does not. Night Shift changes color temperature. Use a built-in privacy display or a properly fitted physical filter for side-angle concerns.
“The darkest setting is the safest.”
Not necessarily. Very low brightness can make your own view unusable while still leaving shapes or text visible under favorable lighting. Balance front readability with the side-angle test.
“A color filter will make confidential text unreadable.”
Color filters and inversion alter appearance, but an observer can still read the transformed content if the text remains legible. They may also damage the meaning of color-coded information.
“Any privacy filter with the same diagonal size will fit.”
Diagonal size alone is insufficient. Model, aspect ratio, cutouts, borders and case clearance determine fit. Confirm those details before purchase.
“A privacy display makes every situation private.”
Side-angle protection does not cover someone directly behind you, a reflection in glass, a camera pointed at the screen or content revealed through notifications. Lock the device when unattended, position it carefully and minimize sensitive previews on the lock screen.
What to change first
If someone beside you might read the screen, start with the device’s integrated privacy display or a model-specific physical filter. If the problem is your own comfort, start with text size, bold text, contrast, transparency and room-appropriate brightness. Add True Tone, Night Shift, dark appearance, inversion or color filters only when their appearance or accessibility effect is useful. Keep testing both goals separately: a screen can be comfortable for you and still visible from the side, or private from the side and too difficult for you to read.
