On a new phone, start with a strong screen lock and biometrics, install every available system update, audit app permissions and location access, limit sensitive lock-screen previews, and turn on the built-in device-finding and theft-protection features your model supports. The labels and defaults differ between iPhone, stock Android and manufacturer versions, so use the platform-specific paths below rather than assuming every phone has the same controls.
Use this first-hour setup order
Complete these steps before installing lots of apps or signing into sensitive accounts. They establish the controls that protect the phone itself, then reduce unnecessary data exposure.
- Create a strong screen lock. Use a long PIN or password that is not reused elsewhere. Add Face ID, Touch ID or Android biometrics for convenience, but keep the passcode or PIN as the fallback.
- Install system and security updates. Restart if required, then return to Settings and confirm that no update or security recommendation remains.
- Enable device finding. Turn on Find My on iPhone or Find Hub on Android, and verify that the phone can be located from your account.
- Review theft protections. Enable the options your device and operating-system version actually support; requirements differ by model.
- Audit permissions. Check location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts and other sensitive access. Choose the least access that still lets each app perform its intended job.
- Reduce lock-screen disclosure. Hide message text and one-time sign-in codes from notifications when someone could see the phone while it is locked.
- Review account-level privacy. Device permissions control hardware and operating-system access; an app’s own account settings can separately control advertising, history, sharing and cloud data.
1. Set a screen lock that protects more than the display
A screen lock is the foundation for every other setting. A short or reused code is easier to guess or obtain, while a long PIN or password materially increases the effort needed to access a lost phone. Biometrics make a strong lock practical for daily use, but they do not replace the underlying passcode or PIN.

Open Settings > Security and privacy on Android 13 and later, then choose the screen-lock control. Android 12 and earlier may place this under separate Security or Privacy sections, and manufacturers can rename or rearrange the menus. Select a PIN or password you can reliably remember; avoid birthdays, repeated digits and patterns that are obvious from finger marks.

Android documents that the screen lock protects more than access to the handset. It also helps secure private data used by Google services, including saved credentials in Google Password Manager, passkeys, Maps Timeline backups and Find Hub location data. If you cannot use the lock consistently, choose a code you can enter accurately rather than weakening it and leaving the phone unlocked.
iPhone
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, enable a device passcode and select Passcode Options if you want a longer numeric or alphanumeric code. Keep Face ID or Touch ID enabled for normal unlocking, while remembering that iPhone may require the passcode after a restart or other security events.
2. Install updates and read the security status page
Do not postpone the first update cycle. Updates can contain fixes for vulnerabilities, changes to privacy behavior and compatibility improvements that security features depend on.
Android security and privacy screen
On Android 13 and newer, open Settings > Security and privacy. The page can surface system-update status, security recommendations, app security and Play Protect, screen-lock status, account-security notices, device-finding controls, privacy settings and lock-screen notification options. Android 12 and earlier may show separate Security and Privacy pages. A Samsung, Motorola or other manufacturer may use different wording even when the underlying controls are similar.
Install the operating-system update, Google Play system update and manufacturer security update whenever the phone offers them. Afterward, revisit the security page: a warning can remain because a separate action, such as adding a screen lock or resolving an account alert, is still incomplete.
iPhone update check
Use Settings > General > Software Update. Turn on automatic updates if you want the phone to install supported releases without waiting for a manual check. Keep enough battery and storage available for the update, and verify the version after the restart.

3. Audit app permissions instead of disabling everything
Permissions should match what an app actually does. A navigation app may need location while you use it; a document scanner may need the camera during a scan; neither automatically needs continuous access to every other category of data.
Android: Privacy Dashboard and Permission Manager
Open Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy, then use Privacy Dashboard to see recent access to the camera, microphone and location. Select a category to identify the apps that used it and when. Use the permission manager to inspect additional categories such as photos and videos, contacts, calendar, phone, SMS, nearby devices and files.
For each app, choose the narrowest option that supports its function:
- While using the app: access only when the app is on screen.
- One time: useful for an occasional location or camera task.
- Allow all the time: reserve for a feature that genuinely operates in the background, such as a safety or navigation function you intentionally use.
- Deny: choose when the requested data is unrelated to the app’s purpose.
For location, Android can offer approximate or precise access. Approximate location is often enough for local weather, shopping or regional content; precise location is needed for turn-by-turn navigation or an explicitly chosen nearby-device feature. Android may also reset permissions for unused apps, so an app can ask again after a period of inactivity.
iPhone: review each category and each app
Open Settings > Privacy & Security. Review Location Services, Tracking, Camera, Microphone, Photos, Contacts and other categories shown on your device. The list identifies apps that requested access; tap an app to change its choice later.
Recommended Free Tools
For location, choose Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share, While Using the App or another option presented by that app. If precise location is unnecessary, turn off Precise Location while retaining a general area. iPhone can notify you when an app uses location in the background, giving you a chance to keep, narrow or remove that access.

Under Tracking, review which apps have asked to track activity across other companies’ apps and websites. You can change individual choices or disable the general permission for future requests. This setting is separate from location, camera and microphone permissions.
4. Decide what location access is justified
Location is not a binary privacy decision. Removing it from every app can break features you want, while granting background precise location to every app creates unnecessary exposure. Make the choice per function:
| Use case | Usually sufficient | When broader access may be justified |
|---|---|---|
| Turn-by-turn navigation | Precise location while using the app | Background access only if you intentionally navigate with the screen off or receive live route guidance |
| Weather or local listings | Approximate, while using | Manual location entry may remove the need for location permission entirely |
| Emergency or safety feature | Follow the feature’s documented requirement | Background or precise access can be necessary for the service you elected to use |
| Social, shopping or games | Approximate or one-time access, if needed | Keep access off when the app’s core function works without it |
Recheck location after major updates or after installing a new app. A permission that was reasonable during setup may no longer match how you use the app.
5. Protect against loss, theft and account takeover
Android theft protection and Find Hub
In Settings > Security and privacy, open the theft-protection and device-finding controls available on your phone. Android lists features such as Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Failed Authentication Lock and Remote Lock. Support is not universal: some options require Android 15 or later, and availability varies by model and manufacturer.
Remote Lock has explicit prerequisites. The phone needs a screen lock, an active SIM, a verified phone number, Find Hub enabled and an internet connection. If one of those is missing, remote locking may not work when you need it. Confirm Find Hub is enabled in your account and that the device appears in the service’s device list before treating it as recoverable.
iPhone Find My and Stolen Device Protection
Keep Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone enabled, including the options your model presents for finding the device when it is offline or has low power. Find My supports locating, marking as lost and remotely erasing a device through your Apple Account.

On iOS 17.3 or later, consider Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Stolen Device Protection. Apple requires a device passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Location Services and Find My for this feature. When the phone is away from familiar locations, certain sensitive actions require biometric authentication without a passcode fallback. Some account and security changes can also impose a one-hour security delay followed by another biometric check.
The feature can use a location-dependent default or an Always setting, depending on the options shown. “Always” adds protection even in places the phone recognizes as familiar, but it can create more interruptions for legitimate changes. Choose based on how much friction you accept, and do not assume the feature prevents theft; it raises the barrier to changing critical settings after a thief obtains the passcode.
6. Hide sensitive information from the lock screen
Notifications can reveal message text, one-time sign-in codes, travel details or delivery information to anyone who can see the locked display. In the notification settings, choose whether to show all content, hide sensitive content or show no previews until the phone is unlocked. The exact labels differ by phone and app.
Android
Look under Settings > Notifications > Notifications on the lock screen or the equivalent lock-screen section exposed by your manufacturer. You can often hide sensitive content globally and then allow previews for selected apps. Check both the general setting and individual app notification channels.
iPhone
Use Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and select When Unlocked or Never if you do not want message text visible on the locked screen. You can override the choice for individual apps. Test the result by locking the phone and sending yourself a message or sign-in code.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →7. Keep device permissions separate from account privacy
Turning off an app’s access to contacts or location does not delete data the app already stored in its account, and it does not necessarily stop the service from using information supplied elsewhere. Sign in to each important app and review its own privacy, history, advertising, sharing and security controls. Apple specifically treats third-party account settings as separate from iPhone permission controls.

For accounts that support them, use passkeys or a password manager, enable two-factor authentication and review signed-in devices. Android’s screen lock helps protect credentials and passkeys stored through its password tools, but account recovery options still need their own review.
Android and iPhone: where the controls differ
| Area | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Permission choices | While using, one time, deny, plus approximate or precise location; unused-app permissions may reset | Per-app choices including while using or next-time access; precise location can be disabled; background-use reminders may appear |
| Audit visibility | Privacy Dashboard summarizes recent camera, microphone and location access | Privacy & Security lists category access and can notify you about background location use |
| Theft controls | Feature names and availability vary by model and Android version; some require Android 15 or later | Stolen Device Protection requires iOS 17.3 or later plus passcode, biometrics, two-factor authentication, Location Services and Find My |
| Lock-screen exposure | Notification-on-lock-screen controls vary by manufacturer | Show Previews offers When Unlocked, Never and app-level choices |
Neither platform is automatically “private” in every situation. The practical difference is whether the control you need exists on your model, how visible its audit history is and how much inconvenience you accept to reduce exposure.
Common setup mistakes and fixes
Granting every permission during installation
Choose “while using,” one-time or approximate access where those choices meet the need. If an app fails, restore only the specific permission it requires instead of granting every category.
Assuming a feature exists because the menu name appears online
Check the phone’s own settings and support page. Android theft features can depend on Android 15, hardware, a SIM, a verified number or connectivity; a missing switch is often a compatibility limitation rather than a setup error.
Leaving previews visible for authentication codes
Set previews to appear only after unlocking, then test with a real notification. Some apps have their own preview controls that can override the system default.
Forgetting the account after securing the device
Review the app’s account privacy and signed-in sessions separately. A denied device permission does not revoke data already held by the service.
Turning off location or camera access indiscriminately
Removing permissions can disable navigation, emergency functions, scanning and other features you deliberately use. Narrow access by time, precision and app rather than treating every request as unsafe.

Quick Recap
A maintenance schedule that keeps the settings useful
- After every major operating-system update: revisit Security and privacy, Privacy Dashboard or Privacy & Security because menu names and defaults can change.
- Monthly: inspect recent camera, microphone and location access and remove permissions from apps you no longer use.
- When installing an unfamiliar app: deny optional permissions first, then enable only what a specific feature needs.
- After a phone is lost or a passcode may be exposed: use Find My or Find Hub, mark the device lost or remotely lock it, change important account passwords from a trusted device and review active sessions.
