Before moving PostgreSQL to a larger, smaller, faster, or differently configured server, review memory, connection capacity, WAL and checkpoint behavior, vacuum resources, and replication limits. Tune them against the workload and resources the new environment will actually provide—not hardware specifications alone. The right values on one server may be wrong on another, so this is a review checklist, not a universal configuration recipe.

“Upgrading infrastructure” can also mean upgrading PostgreSQL itself. Those are separate changes: a server move does not automatically require a database-version migration, and a major-version migration needs its own compatibility review and procedure.

What should you check before changing PostgreSQL infrastructure?

Start by documenting the existing system and establishing a baseline. This gives you a way to distinguish a configuration problem from a change caused by different CPU, memory, storage, workload, or application behavior after the move.

Record the current environment

  • PostgreSQL version, effective configuration, and any table-level storage parameter overrides.
  • Memory available to PostgreSQL after the operating system and other processes are accounted for; CPU capacity; and the layout and capacity of data, WAL, and backup storage.
  • Database size, workload patterns, write volume, concurrent sessions, connection-pooling behavior, and use of parallel queries or background workers.
  • Replication and archiving topology, including logical replication where used, along with point-in-time recovery requirements.
  • Recovery objectives, maintenance windows, failover behavior, and any constraints on downtime.

Establish a workload baseline

Capture representative query latency, CPU and memory use, I/O behavior, checkpoint activity, WAL generation, and vacuum progress. Include both normal periods and known busy periods: a quiet snapshot may understate concurrency or write pressure. Use the same representative workload when comparing the current and target environments.

For a target server, compare usable RAM, CPU capacity, storage latency and throughput, storage capacity for data and WAL, expected concurrency, replication needs, and recovery objectives. A host with more RAM does not by itself justify increasing every memory setting; faster storage does not by itself establish that more vacuum workers are beneficial.

How should you tune PostgreSQL memory after a server move?

Review shared_buffers, work_mem, maintenance_work_mem, and autovacuum_work_mem as one budget. PostgreSQL memory use is not limited to shared_buffers: the operating system cache, query operations, maintenance tasks, and concurrent autovacuum workers also consume resources.

shared_buffers: use the documented starting point carefully

PostgreSQL documents 25% of system RAM as a reasonable starting point for shared_buffers on a dedicated database server with at least 1 GB of RAM. It also cautions that allocating more than 40% is unlikely to help in general, because PostgreSQL relies on the operating system cache as well. These are qualified starting-point guidance and a general caution—not targets or guarantees for every host. See PostgreSQL 18 Resource Consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a move to a shared or managed host, first establish how much memory is genuinely available to PostgreSQL rather than treating the host’s advertised RAM as the database’s budget. Then evaluate the setting against observed memory pressure and workload behavior. A larger buffer allocation can also affect the WAL and checkpoint review, so do not change it in isolation.

work_mem: budget for operations and concurrency

work_mem can be used by multiple sort or hash operations within one complex query, and several sessions may run such queries at the same time. Therefore, estimating its potential use as “work_mem multiplied by connection count” is incomplete; the relevant budget depends on concurrent activity and the number of memory-consuming operations in those queries.

Before increasing it, estimate how many such operations may be active under the real workload and observe memory use during busy periods. A high value that helps one query can create pressure when many queries run concurrently. Increasing the server’s connection limit can change that concurrency picture even if the workload itself has not changed.

Maintenance and autovacuum memory

Include maintenance_work_mem and autovacuum_work_mem in the same budget. Maintenance tasks use memory, and autovacuum memory can multiply across workers. Size these settings with the number of workers and maintenance activity in mind rather than judging one worker’s allowance alone. PostgreSQL’s resource documentation describes these settings and their interactions at Resource Consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you raise max_connections on a larger server?

Not automatically. max_connections sets the maximum number of concurrent database connections, is a start-time parameter, and higher values increase PostgreSQL’s resource allocation. A larger machine may have room for more connections, but matching the limit to the number of application processes or users can still waste resources if most connections are idle or if active query concurrency is the actual constraint.

Check the expected number of active sessions, the application’s connection-pooling arrangement, and the target’s memory budget before changing the limit. Consider pooling and expected concurrency before raising it simply because the new host has more CPU or RAM. PostgreSQL documents the connection setting and its resource implications in Connections and Authentication.

Also inventory parallel query, background workers, and replication workers. These compete for worker-related capacity and can be relevant even when the client connection count appears manageable. For logical replication, worker requirements include subscriptions, synchronization, parallel apply, and related background work; extensions and parallel queries may also use worker capacity. See Logical Replication Configuration.

Which WAL and checkpoint settings need review?

WAL configuration reflects durability, recovery, archiving, and replication needs as well as write workload. Review wal_level, max_wal_size, checkpoint_timeout, checkpoint_completion_target, archiving, and retention together with write rates, storage throughput and capacity, standby lag, and recovery objectives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep wal_level aligned with the deployment

Choose a WAL level that supports the deployment’s required archiving, physical replication, or logical decoding. Logical replication requires wal_level = logical; logical level records additional information and can increase WAL volume. Do not lower WAL capability to save storage until you have confirmed the effect on replication and point-in-time recovery. PostgreSQL describes WAL behavior in Write Ahead Log and logical replication requirements in Logical Replication Configuration.

Size WAL and checkpoint behavior against writes and storage

Evaluate max_wal_size and checkpoint settings against the target’s write rate and storage capability, not just its total disk space. Larger shared_buffers commonly calls for a corresponding increase in max_wal_size, but the appropriate choice still depends on WAL capacity, archive health, storage throughput, replication lag, and recovery goals. Confirm that the archive destination and retention approach can accommodate the resulting WAL behavior.

Increasing checkpoint_timeout can reduce checkpoint frequency, but PostgreSQL warns that it can increase the time required for crash recovery. Treat recovery time as a design constraint: do not lengthen the interval solely to reduce checkpoint frequency without checking whether the resulting recovery behavior fits your objectives. Review checkpoint_completion_target alongside the other checkpoint settings and the storage system’s behavior; do not assume one value suits every device or write pattern.

How should you review autovacuum capacity?

Autovacuum is enabled by default, but it also requires track_counts to be enabled. Confirm both settings rather than assuming that a new installation or target configuration has preserved effective vacuuming. PostgreSQL’s guidance is in Vacuuming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review autovacuum_max_workers, available worker slots, thresholds, nap time, and per-worker memory against table churn and system capacity. More CPU or faster storage may make different maintenance concurrency possible, but increasing workers can also add I/O contention. Check vacuum progress and workload behavior, and inspect table-level storage parameter overrides as well as global settings; a global change may not govern every table.

Do not evaluate worker count separately from memory and workload. Multiple workers can increase aggregate maintenance memory, and their I/O competes with application reads and writes. Make changes based on the observed maintenance backlog and the target’s capacity under representative load.

What changes if the move includes logical replication?

For logical replication, verify wal_level = logical and size replication slots, WAL senders, logical replication workers, and background workers for the actual topology. Account for subscriptions, table synchronization, parallel apply, extensions, and parallel queries when considering worker limits. These requirements affect both WAL generation and worker capacity, so they belong in the infrastructure plan rather than being deferred until after the move.

Check that archiving, WAL retention, standby behavior, and recovery objectives remain viable on the target. In particular, avoid reducing WAL capability or capacity without verifying its effects on replication and point-in-time recovery. Consult the PostgreSQL documentation for logical replication configuration alongside the WAL guidance.

Does an infrastructure move require a PostgreSQL version upgrade?

No. Treat a host or storage move and a PostgreSQL major-version migration as separate decisions, even if they happen in the same project. A version change introduces compatibility and migration concerns that a hardware review does not settle. PostgreSQL’s upgrade guidance notes that major releases can introduce user-visible incompatibilities and directs operators to review the release migration notes for the versions involved. See Upgrading a PostgreSQL Cluster.

If you are using pg_upgrade

Follow the procedure for the exact source and target versions, and use the new server’s pg_upgrade utility. Run pg_upgrade --check to identify checks and manual adjustments relevant to that procedure. Confirm that the target configuration meets replication prerequisites, and preserve the configuration and authentication files you need. The tool’s documentation is at pg_upgrade.

Do not treat a successful infrastructure checklist as evidence that a major-version migration is compatible. Review the version-specific migration guidance and complete the upgrade procedure separately. The checklist here concerns settings and capacity planning; it does not replace the release-specific migration steps.

How do you turn the review into a safe tuning plan?

  1. Capture the baseline. Record the existing PostgreSQL version, effective settings, workload measurements, resources, storage layout, connection behavior, replication and archive topology, and recovery objectives.
  2. Describe the target in usable terms. Establish memory available to PostgreSQL, CPU and worker capacity, storage latency, throughput and capacity, expected concurrency, and provider or operational constraints.
  3. Map each setting to a requirement. Tie memory settings to concurrent operations and maintenance; connection limits to active sessions and pooling; WAL and checkpoints to writes, replication, archiving, storage, and recovery; and vacuum settings to churn and maintenance capacity.
  4. Change only what the target or workload justifies. Avoid importing the old server’s values unchanged or multiplying settings based only on advertised hardware. Keep interacting settings in the same review.
  5. Validate with representative load and recovery needs. Compare the same workload measures used for the baseline, including query latency, memory and CPU use, I/O, checkpoint activity, WAL generation, and vacuum progress. Confirm that archiving, replication, and recovery objectives still hold.
  6. Keep version migration separate. If PostgreSQL itself will change major versions, use the relevant release migration notes and documented upgrade procedure in addition to this infrastructure review.

If the target is managed PostgreSQL, compare supported PostgreSQL versions, resources available to the database, connection and worker limits, replication and recovery support, migration process, and published pricing for the relevant region and configuration. Do not assume that nominal host specifications map directly to settings you can control; the provider’s limits and migration procedures matter.
