Choose the Polk Signa S4 if you want a straightforward Dolby Atmos bar with a wireless subwoofer and basic TV connections. Choose the MagniFi Max AX if Wi‑Fi streaming, three HDMI inputs, DTS:X and a larger 10-inch subwoofer matter more. Choose the MagniFi Max AX SR if you want two wireless rear speakers included rather than adding them later.
Those are configuration-based recommendations from Polk’s published specifications, not independent sound-quality rankings. Polk’s product pages do not establish which model sounds best, handles a particular room size, or delivers objectively superior dialogue or bass.
Quick comparison: the three Polk soundbars
The channel numbers describe the listed speaker layout, not a score. In “3.1.2,” the first number is the main speaker channels, “.1” is the subwoofer channel, and the final number identifies height channels used for formats such as Dolby Atmos. A larger number can mean more speakers, but it does not by itself prove better sound.
| Model | Polk-listed configuration | Included speakers | Connections and streaming listed by Polk | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Signa S4 | 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos | Wireless subwoofer; no rear surrounds listed | HDMI eARC, optical, 3.5 mm analog, Bluetooth | A simple Atmos setup for a TV, with no surround-speaker installation |
| MagniFi Max AX | 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X | Wireless subwoofer with a 10-inch driver; rear speakers optional | Wi‑Fi, Apple AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast for Audio, Spotify Connect, Alexa support, Bluetooth 5.0, three HDMI 4K/60 Hz inputs, HDMI eARC, optical and video pass-through | A connected system for several HDMI sources and network streaming |
| MagniFi Max AX SR | 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X | Wireless subwoofer and two wireless surround speakers | Not stated in the cited specification | A buyer who wants included rear surrounds |
Polk identifies SR2 wireless rear speakers as an expansion option for the standard MagniFi Max AX. Verify the exact model compatibility and current availability before purchasing an accessory.

Pick the right model for your priorities
Choose Signa S4 for a compact, uncomplicated setup
The Signa S4 is the least complicated choice in this shortlist. Polk lists it as a 3.1.2 Dolby Atmos system with a wireless subwoofer. There are no rear surrounds listed, so you do not need to plan speaker stands, rear power outlets or wireless-surround placement.
Its listed inputs cover the common TV arrangements: HDMI eARC, optical and 3.5 mm analog, plus Bluetooth for compatible wireless playback. If your television has eARC, that is the connection to try first for a single-cable TV-to-bar setup. Optical is the fallback when the television does not provide a suitable HDMI connection, while analog is useful for a source with a 3.5 mm output.
The bar measures 41.2 × 3.7 × 2.4 inches, and Polk lists the subwoofer at 7.9 × 12.9 × 11 inches. Measure the shelf, wall area and floor space before ordering. The box contents listed by Polk include an HDMI cable, optical cable, remote, power cords and wall-mount materials.
Choose MagniFi Max AX when connectivity and streaming come first
The MagniFi Max AX is a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X system. Its wireless subwoofer uses a 10-inch driver, and Polk lists Wi‑Fi streaming, Bluetooth 5.0, three HDMI inputs supporting 4K/60 Hz, HDMI eARC, optical input and video pass-through.
That input selection is the clearest reason to choose the Max AX over the Signa S4. Three HDMI inputs let you connect more source devices directly to the bar while sending video to the television, subject to the source, cable and display supporting the formats you want. Check your television and source specifications before assuming a particular HDR, resolution or refresh-rate combination will pass through.
Network features listed by Polk include Apple AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast for Audio, Spotify Connect and Alexa support. These features are useful if you want the bar to appear as a network playback target rather than relying only on a television app or Bluetooth. Network setup and account requirements can change, so follow the current on-screen or app instructions supplied with the unit.
Polk also describes its VoiceAdjust technology on the MagniFi Max AX page: “Polk’s patented VoiceAdjust™ speech-clarifying technology works with MagniFi’s integrated center-channel speaker to bring up the volume of voices over other elements of the soundtrack.” This is a description of Polk’s feature, not an independent dialogue test.

Choose MagniFi Max AX SR when rear speakers should be included
The MagniFi Max AX SR is listed as a 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X system with a wireless subwoofer and two wireless surround speakers. It is the only model in this shortlist whose official listing specifies those two rear speakers in the package.
This configuration is appropriate when you want sound coming from behind the seating position without buying and pairing an additional surround kit. You still need suitable locations and power for the rear speakers. The cited product information does not establish a maximum room size or guarantee a particular surround effect, so judge placement by your seating layout rather than by a published square-footage claim.
What the channel numbers actually tell you
3.1.2: Signa S4
The Signa S4’s 3.1.2 label indicates three main channels, one subwoofer channel and two height channels in Polk’s specification. It is a bar-and-subwoofer system with no rear speakers listed. The label tells you the intended layout; it is not a laboratory measurement of clarity, loudness or immersion.
5.1.2: MagniFi Max AX
The Max AX adds a 5.1.2 layout and supports both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X according to Polk. Rear speakers are not included in the standard listing, although Polk identifies SR2 wireless rears as a separately available expansion path. Confirm that any accessory listing names your exact Max AX model.

7.1.2: MagniFi Max AX SR
The Max AX SR’s 7.1.2 designation accompanies two included wireless surround speakers. The extra surround channels describe the package layout, not a promise that it will outperform every other system in every room.
Connections: match the bar to your television and sources
HDMI eARC
Both the Signa S4 and MagniFi Max AX specifications list HDMI eARC. Look at the labels on the television and soundbar before buying: the TV port should be identified as eARC or a compatible audio-return port. Use a certified, functioning HDMI cable and select the television’s external audio or receiver output option. Menu names vary by manufacturer, so look for settings containing “Sound output,” “Audio output,” “HDMI eARC” or “Receiver.”
If the television sends sound through its built-in speakers after the cable is connected, recheck that the bar is on the HDMI input and that the TV’s digital-audio output is not set to a mode the bar cannot decode. The exact available formats depend on the TV, source and content.

Optical and analog
Polk lists optical input on the Signa S4 and MagniFi Max AX. Optical is a practical alternative when HDMI eARC is unavailable, but it does not provide the same connection path as eARC for every advanced audio format. Set the TV’s digital output to a compatible mode if you hear silence or receive only stereo.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Signa S4 also lists a 3.5 mm analog input. Use a matching stereo cable from a source with an analog headphone or line output, then select the corresponding input on the bar.
HDMI inputs and video pass-through on MagniFi Max AX
The Max AX specification lists three HDMI inputs with 4K/60 Hz support, HDMI eARC and video pass-through. Connect a source to one of the bar’s HDMI inputs, connect the bar’s eARC output to the TV’s eARC port, then select the matching HDMI input on the bar. For a source that is already connected directly to the TV, use the TV’s audio-return connection instead.
“4K/60 Hz” is a published input capability, not a guarantee that every connected device will pass every picture format. Confirm the limits of the source, display, cable and content chain.
Wireless playback and surround expansion
Streaming on MagniFi Max AX
The Max AX lists Wi‑Fi, Apple AirPlay 2, Google Chromecast for Audio, Spotify Connect, Alexa support and Bluetooth 5.0. Wi‑Fi-based services generally require the bar and controlling device to be configured on the same network and may require a service account. Bluetooth is useful when you want a direct wireless connection without configuring network playback.

Adding rear speakers to MagniFi Max AX
Polk identifies SR2 wireless rear speakers as a separately available expansion for the standard Max AX. Treat compatibility as model-specific: compare the exact model name, included transmitter or pairing requirements and current instructions before buying. Do not assume that any wireless Polk speaker will pair with the bar.

- WIRELESSLY STREAM MUSIC to these bluetooth speakers from streaming apps like Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn, and more using a smartphone, tablet or other devices via Bluetooth, or use Google Chromecast for music over Wi-Fi with a Google Home speaker
The Max AX SR already includes two wireless surround speakers, so an additional rear-speaker purchase is not part of the normal setup. Place the included speakers beside or slightly behind the seating position, provide power, and follow the pairing procedure in the current manual.
Physical planning before you buy
- Measure the bar location. The Signa S4 bar is 41.2 inches wide, 3.7 inches high and 2.4 inches deep. Leave enough clearance for the television’s infrared sensor and for cables to bend without strain.
- Plan subwoofer space. The Signa S4 subwoofer is listed at 7.9 × 12.9 × 11 inches. Polk does not provide comparable dimensions for the two MagniFi systems in the cited specifications, so measure the actual unit or confirm its current manual before final placement.
- Check power near wireless speakers. A wireless audio link does not mean a rear speaker is battery-powered. The Max AX SR’s included surrounds and any SR2 expansion require practical access to power.
- Check the TV stand or wall. The Signa S4 box contents include wall-mount materials, but verify that your wall type, mounting height and hardware requirements are suitable before installation.
- Count your sources. If you have a game console, disc player and streaming box, the Max AX’s three listed HDMI inputs may reduce cable swapping. If nearly everything runs through TV apps, the Signa S4’s simpler input set may be sufficient.
Setup procedure
- Inventory the box. Confirm the bar, subwoofer, remote, power cords and required cable. Polk lists HDMI and optical cables and wall-mount materials with the Signa S4; check the current package contents for whichever model you purchase.
- Place the bar. Center it beneath or in front of the television, keeping the front unobstructed. If wall-mounting, follow the supplied mounting guidance and keep the bar level.
- Connect the television. Use HDMI eARC when the TV and bar provide the appropriate labeled ports. Otherwise use optical on models for which Polk lists that input. For Signa S4, analog is another listed option.
- Connect source devices. On the Max AX, connect HDMI sources to the bar’s HDMI inputs when you need its video pass-through. Alternatively, connect sources to the TV and return audio through eARC.
- Connect power and wake the system. Plug in the bar and subwoofer, select the input used by the TV, and wait for the wireless subwoofer or surround speakers to complete their connection sequence.
- Set the TV audio output. In the TV’s sound menu, choose the external HDMI/eARC or optical output you used. Disable automatic switching temporarily if the TV keeps returning to its internal speakers.
- Test with known content. Start with a clear stereo program, then test an Atmos or DTS:X title only if your source, TV connection and subscription or disc explicitly provide that format. A content label alone cannot overcome an incompatible connection.
- Configure network playback if applicable. For Max AX streaming, follow the current Polk setup instructions for Wi‑Fi, then test one listed service such as AirPlay 2, Chromecast for Audio or Spotify Connect. Pair Bluetooth separately if you prefer direct playback.
- Place optional or included surrounds. For Max AX SR, position the two included speakers around the seating area and connect their power. For a standard Max AX, install SR2 speakers only after confirming exact compatibility.
Troubleshooting by symptom
No sound over HDMI
- Confirm the HDMI cable runs from the TV’s eARC-labeled port to the bar’s HDMI eARC connection, not to a regular input.
- Select the matching input on the bar and the external-speaker output on the TV.
- Power-cycle the TV, bar and source, then test a different HDMI cable if available.
- If the TV still produces silence, switch temporarily to optical on a model that lists optical input. This isolates an HDMI-control or eARC configuration problem.
Sound is stereo when you expected immersive audio
- Verify that the movie, game or stream actually supplies Dolby Atmos or DTS:X; ordinary stereo content will not become a source-native immersive track.
- Check every link in the chain: source output mode, TV audio setting, HDMI/eARC connection and the bar’s selected input.
- On the Signa S4, look for Dolby Atmos content; Polk’s specification does not list DTS:X for this model. The Max AX and Max AX SR are the models listed with both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.
The wireless subwoofer or surrounds do not connect
- Place the speaker near the bar during initial pairing and connect both units to power.
- Remove nearby sources of avoidable wireless interference and restart the pairing process described in the current manual.
- For an added SR2 kit, confirm that the accessory is intended for your exact MagniFi Max AX version. Compatibility should not be inferred from appearance or brand alone.
Streaming services cannot find the bar
- For Max AX Wi‑Fi playback, verify that the bar completed network setup and that the phone or computer is on the same network.
- Update the streaming app and restart the bar and network equipment before pairing again.
- If you need immediate playback, use Bluetooth 5.0 on the Max AX or Bluetooth on the Signa S4 while you resolve the network issue.
What the specifications do—and do not—prove
The published specifications establish the channel layouts, included speakers, listed inputs, streaming features and Signa S4 dimensions described above. They do not provide independent listening-test scores, frequency-response measurements, maximum output, latency results, dialogue rankings, bass rankings or room-size limits.
That distinction matters when interpreting “best.” The Max AX has more connectivity and a larger listed subwoofer driver than the Signa S4, but those facts alone do not prove that it sounds better in your room. The Max AX SR includes rear speakers, but the 7.1.2 label does not guarantee a stronger effect in a room where the speakers cannot be placed correctly. Choose according to the features you will use and the space you can set up.
Price, stock and package checks
Soundbar prices, sale prices and availability change. Recheck the current Polk listing and the retailer’s exact model number at the time of purchase rather than treating a search-result price as permanent. Confirm whether the listing is for Signa S4, MagniFi Max AX or MagniFi Max AX SR; the names describe materially different packages.
Before checkout, verify the included subwoofer, rear speakers, cables, remote and mounting materials. The Signa S4 package is specifically described as including HDMI and optical cables and wall-mount materials, while the Max AX SR’s defining package difference is its two included wireless surrounds. Accessory bundles can vary by seller even when the bar name appears identical.
A practical buying checklist
- Does your TV have the HDMI eARC or optical connection you plan to use?
- Do you need three HDMI inputs and video pass-through, or will TV apps handle most sources?
- Will you use Wi‑Fi services such as AirPlay 2, Chromecast for Audio or Spotify Connect?
- Do you want only a bar and subwoofer, or are included rear speakers important?
- Can you place and power a subwoofer and, for the Max AX SR, two rear speakers?
- Have you measured the available shelf, wall and floor space?
- Have you checked the exact model, current package contents, price and stock?
Bottom line
For the simplest Polk Atmos package, the Signa S4 is the logical starting point: it combines a 3.1.2 layout, wireless subwoofer, HDMI eARC, optical, analog and Bluetooth in a relatively compact bar. Move to the MagniFi Max AX when Wi‑Fi streaming, three HDMI inputs, video pass-through, DTS:X and its 10-inch wireless-subwoofer specification justify the added complexity. Select the MagniFi Max AX SR when two wireless rear speakers must be included from the start. These are feature-based matches, not claims that one model is objectively the best-sounding.
