Original Game Boy Advance cartridges—Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen—can officially move Pokémon into Generation IV through Pal Park. The documented method needs a Nintendo DS system with a working Game Boy Advance slot, a Generation IV game with the required Pokédex progress, and the original cartridge. The move is permanent: once a Pokémon is migrated, it cannot return to its GBA cartridge. A separate October 2026 update lets the new Nintendo Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen connect to Pokémon HOME; that compatibility does not apply to the original GBA releases or to original Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald cartridges.

The supported games at a glance

Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum Version instruction manual specifically names five GBA source games:

  • Pokémon Ruby Version
  • Pokémon Sapphire Version
  • Pokémon Emerald Version
  • Pokémon FireRed Version
  • Pokémon LeafGreen Version

Those cartridges migrate into Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold or SoulSilver through the Pal Park feature, provided the receiving game and hardware meet the requirements. The cited manual gives the complete procedure for Platinum; the other four Generation IV games are the titles commonly associated with the same Pal Park system.

There is no process in which an original GBA cartridge is inserted into Pokémon HOME. The path is a chain through compatible games and services.

How Pal Park moves a Pokémon from a GBA cartridge

Hardware and game requirements

  • A Nintendo DS-family system with a physical Game Boy Advance slot. Check the actual model before buying used hardware; a system without that slot cannot read the cartridge.
  • The GBA Game Pak containing the Pokémon you want to migrate.
  • The Generation IV Game Card in the DS system.
  • National Pokédex progress in the receiving game. The Platinum manual requires the National Pokédex before migration is available.
  • A working cartridge connection and a save file on each game.

A DS Lite is often used as a search term for compatible second-hand hardware, but the important test is the presence and condition of the GBA slot, not the model name alone. This old hardware is needed only for the original-cartridge route; it is not needed for the Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen that connect to HOME.

The documented procedure in Pokémon Platinum

  1. Insert the GBA Game Pak and the Pokémon Platinum Game Card into the compatible DS system.
  2. Start Platinum after meeting its National Pokédex requirement.
  3. On the start menu, choose Migrate From, then select the Pokémon to send from the GBA game.
  4. Load the receiving save and travel to Pal Park.
  5. Use Pal Park’s catching sequence to catch each migrated Pokémon. The migration is not complete until all six selected Pokémon have been caught there.

The manual describes a limit of six Pokémon per Game Pak in each 24-hour period. The six-Pokémon group must be finished in Pal Park before another group can be migrated. A Pokémon holding Mail or knowing a hidden move cannot be selected for migration, so remove those conditions on the GBA save first.

The transfer cannot be undone

Nintendo’s warning is explicit: “Please be careful. Once migrated, Pokémon will never be able to go back to their original GBA Pokémon series Game Pak.” Treat Pal Park as a one-way move, not a backup. Keep a separate GBA save or cartridge copy if you want to preserve a team, ribbon collection or original in-game record.

Because the six-per-24-hour rule is applied per Game Pak, planning matters when moving a large collection. Sort the box on the GBA game, remove Mail and hidden moves, and choose the first six before starting the DS procedure.

Which Generation IV games have Pal Park?

Generation IV game Pal Park migration Evidence and qualification
Pokémon Diamond Commonly identified as supporting Pal Park The supplied primary manual is for Platinum, not Diamond; verify the game’s own requirements.
Pokémon Pearl Commonly identified as supporting Pal Park The supplied primary manual is for Platinum, not Pearl; verify the game’s own requirements.
Pokémon Platinum Documented Nintendo’s manual names the five GBA sources, requires the National Pokédex, and describes the six-per-24-hour limit.
Pokémon HeartGold Commonly identified as supporting Pal Park Use the receiving game’s instructions for its unlock conditions.
Pokémon SoulSilver Commonly identified as supporting Pal Park Use the receiving game’s instructions for its unlock conditions.

The original GBA source list is the same five games named in the Platinum manual. No GBA cartridge is a direct source for Pal Park outside that list.

For the exact wording and restrictions, see Nintendo’s Pokémon Platinum manual.

Getting GBA Pokémon farther than Generation IV

The legacy chain

After Pal Park, the Pokémon is in a Generation IV save. The established legacy route then uses Generation V transfer functionality, followed by Pokémon Bank and Pokémon HOME. Each generation and service must accept that Pokémon’s species, moves, origin data and other eligibility rules. The intermediate Generation V screens and exact hardware arrangement vary by the games involved, so do not assume that inserting a cartridge into HOME replaces those steps.

In practical terms, plan the move as:

  1. GBA cartridge to a compatible Generation IV game through Pal Park.
  2. Generation IV to a compatible Generation V title using that generation’s transfer feature.
  3. Generation V and eligible Nintendo 3DS software into Pokémon Bank where supported.
  4. Pokémon Bank into Pokémon HOME, then into a connected destination game that accepts that individual Pokémon.

Bank to HOME is also one way

Pokémon Support says eligible Pokémon from Nintendo 3DS titles stored in Pokémon Bank can be moved to HOME. The cited guidance requires a paid Pokémon HOME Premium Plan for the Bank transfer and states that Pokémon cannot be moved back to Bank after entering HOME. Read the current service notice before committing valuable Pokémon, because Bank availability and transfer support can change.

The October 2026 Switch exception

In October 2026, The Pokémon Company announced that the Nintendo Switch releases of Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version link with Pokémon HOME. Pokémon from those Switch editions can travel onward to eligible series games through HOME. Pokémon from other games cannot visit the Switch FireRed or LeafGreen editions.

These are separate Switch releases, not the original GBA cartridges with a new cable or adapter. The announcement does not create a HOME connection for original Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed or LeafGreen Game Paks. Read the October 2026 announcement and the current connection notice for the edition-specific rules.

HOME compatibility is checked per Pokémon

HOME storage does not guarantee access to every connected game. A destination must contain that Pokémon and allow its particular history and data. A species may be present in a game while a specific Pokémon still cannot enter because of origin or other restrictions.

Common planning mistakes and fixes

Buying the wrong DS

Many later DS-family systems lack a GBA slot. Confirm the slot physically and test both cartridge contacts before buying. A working Generation IV Game Card alone is insufficient.

Trying to migrate before the unlock

If Migrate From is absent, check the receiving game’s Pokédex progress first. In Platinum, the National Pokédex is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving a blocked Pokémon in the selected group

Remove Mail and hidden moves on the GBA game, then select a new group. Do not erase the save while troubleshooting; migration permanently changes where the Pokémon lives.

Expecting an immediate HOME destination

A Pokémon may need to pass through Generation IV, Generation V and Bank before HOME. Once it is in HOME, inspect Games it can travel to before attempting a move to a particular title.

Confusing Switch and GBA editions

Only the announced Switch releases of FireRed and LeafGreen have the October 2026 HOME connection. The identical names on original cartridges do not grant that feature.

A safe checklist before you start

  • Identify the exact edition and hardware generation of your source game.
  • Back up or preserve any GBA save whose original team or records matter to you.
  • Verify the DS system has a functioning GBA slot and that both Game Paks read reliably.
  • Complete the receiving game’s required Pokédex milestone.
  • Remove Mail and hidden moves from every Pokémon in the planned group.
  • Organize groups of six and allow the full 24-hour Game Pak interval between groups.
  • Decide in advance whether the Pokémon’s next stop is another generation, Bank or HOME; every move after Pal Park can add eligibility restrictions.
  • For HOME destinations, check each Pokémon’s Games it can travel to entry before moving it.

The Bottom Line

For original GBA cartridges, Pal Park in Generation IV is the official starting point: it is hardware-dependent, limited to six Pokémon per cartridge every 24 hours, and irreversible. Pokémon HOME access requires the later generation-and-service chain, while the October 2026 HOME feature applies only to the new Switch versions of FireRed and LeafGreen.
