For most Plex servers, leave four defaults untouched: Transcoder quality on Automatic, Secure connections on Preferred, advanced hidden settings unchanged, and Allow media deletion turned off. Plex Support says its defaults are usually sufficient for most installations, so changing these without a specific problem can reduce playback quality, break older clients, expose destructive file actions, or create harder-to-diagnose server behavior.

There are sensible exceptions for remote-bandwidth limits, transcoding concurrency, and library scanning. Those should be adjusted only after you measure your connection, understand the server’s workload, or confirm that your filesystem is not generating scan notifications.

The four Plex defaults to keep

The table below is the short answer to “Which Plex settings should I leave alone?” The defaults refer to the settings documented by Plex Support; labels can move slightly between Plex Media Server releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting Default to keep Why changing it casually is risky
Transcoder quality Automatic It controls quality when Plex must transcode media, and Plex says most users have little reason to change it.
Secure connections Preferred Required can prevent clients that do not support secure connections from connecting.
Advanced hidden settings Leave unchanged They are intended for unusual, advanced cases; preference resets can remove library access grants and Downloads items.
Allow media deletion Off Deleting from a Plex app can delete the corresponding media file from the filesystem, not merely remove a library entry.

These recommendations come from Plex’s own support guidance. In its settings overview, Plex Support says, “The default settings are usually good enough for most installations, so you probably won’t need to make many changes.” That is a practical baseline, not a claim that every server has identical hardware, clients, network capacity, or storage.

1. Keep Transcoder quality set to Automatic

What the setting controls

When a player cannot direct-play a file, Plex may transcode it. The Transcoder quality option influences the quality Plex targets during that conversion. Plex Support explicitly recommends leaving the value at Automatic and says there is generally little reason for most users to change it. See the Server Settings – Bandwidth and Transcoding Limits guidance.

Automatic lets Plex choose an appropriate quality level for the playback situation instead of forcing one fixed compromise on every stream. A manual value can be appropriate for a controlled test or a known compatibility problem, but it should be a response to an observed symptom rather than a performance tweak made in advance.

When an exception is justified

Investigate this setting only when you can identify a repeatable transcoding problem, such as a particular client producing unacceptable output while other clients work normally. First establish whether the file is being transcoded and whether the limitation is actually bandwidth, codec support, subtitles, or server capacity. Changing quality will not fix a client that cannot decode the source format or a server that is running out of processing capacity.

The related maximum simultaneous video transcode value is different: Plex says most users will not need to change it, but a host that also runs games or other demanding workloads may benefit from a cap. Choose a limit by comparing the processor’s capacity, the other jobs on the machine, and the number of concurrent users. There is no universal session number that is safe for every Plex server.

2. Keep Secure connections on Preferred

Why Preferred is the compatibility baseline

Preferred is Plex’s default for Secure connections, and Plex Support “strongly recommend[s] using the default ‘Preferred’ setting” in its Network settings documentation. Preferred allows secure connections where the client supports them while preserving compatibility with clients that do not.

Switching to Required makes secure support a prerequisite for connecting. That can be a reasonable security policy in a tightly controlled environment where you have verified every app, television, streaming box, and remote user, but it can also make an otherwise healthy client appear unable to reach the server.

Check compatibility before choosing Required

  1. List every device that connects to the server, including infrequently used mobile, television, and web clients.
  2. Update those clients where updates are available and confirm that each one can connect while Secure connections remains Preferred.
  3. Change to Required only if you have a specific policy reason and a recovery path for devices that fail.
  4. If a client stops connecting, return the setting to Preferred before troubleshooting unrelated network or account issues.

Do not confuse this setting with remote upload capacity. A client can support secure connections and still fail to stream smoothly when the server’s upstream connection is saturated.

3. Leave advanced hidden server settings alone

Why these options are different

Plex hides advanced server preferences because the vast majority of users never need to alter them. The official hidden-settings guidance advises caution rather than presenting these controls as routine optimization switches. Their names and effects can also be less obvious than the regular settings exposed in the server interface.

A preference change made while following an old forum post can interact with a later Plex Media Server version, a different operating system, or a different storage layout. If you cannot explain what a value changes, what symptom it addresses, and how to undo it, it should remain at its current value.

Resetting preferences has collateral effects

Resetting Plex preferences is not a harmless way to “start fresh.” Plex warns that doing so may remove granted library access and Downloads items. Those losses affect permissions and offline content, not just a visual preference such as a theme or sort order. Record the reason for any change and follow Plex’s current instructions for the exact release you run instead of deleting preference files speculatively.

A safer troubleshooting sequence

  1. Write down the exact symptom, affected client, media item, and time it occurs.
  2. Check ordinary settings and the relevant Plex log information before exposing hidden preferences.
  3. Change one documented value at a time and test the same scenario again.
  4. Keep the previous value available so you can revert immediately.
  5. If a reset is unavoidable, expect to re-grant library access and restore Downloads items afterward.

4. Keep Allow media deletion turned off

This is a file operation, not just a library option

Plex documents Allow media deletion in its Library settings. When enabled, deleting an item through a Plex app removes it from the library and deletes the corresponding media file. Depending on the operating system, the file may be permanently deleted immediately rather than placed in a recoverable recycle bin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

With the option off, users can still remove items from views or manage libraries through the normal administrative controls, but an accidental tap in a client cannot become an immediate filesystem deletion through Plex. Keeping deletion disabled is therefore the safer default for shared servers, family libraries, and collections that are difficult to replace.

When enabling deletion can make sense

An administrator who deliberately manages a disposable library from Plex apps may decide that in-app deletion is useful. Before enabling it, confirm who has administrative access, which folders the library can write to, and whether the operating system provides any recovery mechanism. Treat the switch as permission to erase source media, not as a housekeeping convenience.

Settings that may deserve adjustment

The four defaults above are not a reason to freeze every Plex option. Plex’s documentation describes legitimate exceptions, but each depends on the server’s measured environment.

Remote upload bandwidth

Set Internet upload speed to the available upload capacity of the connection serving the Plex host, not to its download speed and not to a theoretical plan maximum that the server never achieves. Plex says it uses up to 80% of the configured Internet upload value for streaming, leaving room for normal network requests and variation in stream bitrates. This is a product behavior documented by Plex Support, not an independent study statistic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if testing shows that the server can reliably upload 20 Mbps under normal conditions, configuring the corresponding upload value allows Plex to reserve part of that capacity rather than attempting to consume the entire link. Re-measure after changing internet service, router quality, or the server’s network path. Per-stream and per-user limits should reflect how many remote viewers you actually serve; setting them high does not create additional upstream capacity.

Some bandwidth and transcoding-limit controls require an active Plex Pass subscription. That requirement applies to those controls; it does not mean a subscription is needed to leave the four defaults unchanged.

Automatic library scanning

Automatic scans react when Plex detects a filesystem change. Plex notes that some operating systems do not provide the needed notification and that content on network-mounted storage typically may not trigger automatic scanning reliably. A library can therefore miss a newly added file even though the automatic-scan option appears enabled.

If files are consistently missed, use a periodic scan or start a manual scan after imports, provided the extra filesystem work is acceptable. Plex also documents an advanced partial-scan option. The available scan choices and their exact default state can vary by version, so choose based on observed filesystem behavior rather than assuming one universal default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Observed situation Reasonable response What to avoid
Local storage sends reliable change notifications Keep automatic scanning and verify that new files appear. Changing unrelated hidden settings to speed up a scan.
Network-mounted content is missed Use periodic or manual scans and schedule them around other disk activity. Assuming a missed notification means the media file is corrupt.
Large libraries make full scans disruptive Consider the documented partial-scan behavior where your version supports it. Applying a setting without confirming its effect in your release.

A decision framework before changing a Plex default

Use this checklist whenever you are tempted to change a server setting:

  • Identify the symptom: name the client, file, user, and failure you can reproduce.
  • Measure the constraint: check CPU load for transcoding issues, actual upstream capacity for remote playback, or filesystem notifications for scanning issues.
  • Check compatibility: especially before making Secure connections Required.
  • Prefer the documented control: use a normal setting tied to the symptom before touching a hidden preference.
  • Change one value: record the old value and test the same scenario after the change.
  • Plan recovery: know how to revert a network or preference change, and never enable media deletion without accepting the file-loss risk.

The practical answer to “Should I change the default Plex server settings?” is therefore conditional: leave the four defaults above in place unless a specific, measured requirement points to a different value. Adjust bandwidth, concurrency, or scanning behavior to match your hardware, connection, clients, and filesystem—not to a generic number copied from another server.
