For a business selling both eBooks and courses, the key choice is whether to use an all-in-one creator storefront, a broader ecommerce store with digital delivery, or a course-focused platform. Podia explicitly combines downloads and courses with hosting, checkout, and delivery; Shopify adds file delivery to a general store; Gumroad offers digital-product sales with fees tied to transactions; and Teachable centers on course creation while also supporting downloads. The best fit depends on how much lesson structure, store control, and delivery setup you need.
Compare the platforms by the job they do
| Platform | Best fit | What its official page says | Cost or setup to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Podia | A combined storefront for downloads and courses | Podia describes an integrated store with hosting, checkout, and delivery for courses and downloads. Its store page lists drip lessons, quizzes, and certificates. Podia online store | Verify current plan limits, fees, and payment availability for your country. |
| Shopify | A broader ecommerce store where digital files are one product category | Shopify’s free Digital Products app supports file or link delivery, automatic or manual fulfillment, download limits, bundles, and uploads up to 5 GB. The app is used alongside a standard Shopify subscription and payment processing. Shopify digital products | Account for the Shopify plan and payment processing, and determine whether course lessons need another solution. |
| Gumroad | A lightweight, transaction-based way to sell digital products | Gumroad lists eBooks, courses, tutorials, and memberships. Its pricing page says there is no monthly fee; it lists 10% + $0.50 for direct sales and 30% through Discover. Gumroad pricing | Calculate fees separately for direct sales and Discover sales; listed fees can change. |
| Teachable | A course-led business that also wants to sell downloads | Teachable says its no-code platform supports creating and selling courses, coaching, and digital downloads. Teachable product page | Confirm current plans and whether its download sales and storefront meet your needs. |
Decide what the buyer experience needs to include
Standalone eBooks and other downloads
If the main product is a downloadable file, prioritize how buyers receive it, whether you can set download limits, and whether products can be bundled. Shopify documents automatic or manual fulfillment, download limits, bundles, and a 5 GB upload limit for its Digital Products app. Gumroad lists eBooks among the products it supports. Podia describes hosting and delivering downloads through its store.
Courses with a learning path
A course is more than a file link when learners need lessons released over time, quizzes, or certificates. Podia’s store page explicitly lists drip lessons, quizzes, and certificates. Teachable positions its platform around creating and selling courses, as well as coaching and digital downloads. Confirm the current plan-level features before choosing either service.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A mixed catalog or a larger online store
If eBooks and courses will sit alongside a wider catalog, Shopify’s general ecommerce storefront may suit the store structure. Its digital delivery is provided through an app rather than being evidence that a full course-learning system is included. If you need organized lessons, check what additional setup or service is required before committing.
#1 Best Overall

Compare the full cost, not just the subscription
Pricing models are not directly equivalent. Gumroad’s pricing page lists no monthly fee but charges per sale, with different listed rates for direct sales and Discover. Shopify says its Digital Products app is free, but the seller still pays for a standard Shopify subscription and payment processing. Podia and Teachable require a current plan check; the cited product pages do not establish a consistent price comparison across all four services.

Choose by your main priority
- Both eBooks and structured courses: Start with Podia if its integrated downloads, hosting, and learning features match your needs.
- A broad ecommerce store: Consider Shopify when digital files are part of a larger catalog and you are comfortable configuring the delivery app and accounting for the standard store costs.
- No monthly fee with sale-based charges: Consider Gumroad if the transaction model suits your sales volume; distinguish direct sales from Discover when estimating costs.
- Courses first: Consider Teachable if course creation is central and its current plan details support your desired download storefront.
Check before you migrate or launch
- List each product type you will sell: standalone eBooks, bundled downloads, courses, coaching, or memberships.
- Write down the learner experience you need, including lesson sequencing, drip release, quizzes, certificates, and file access.
- Map delivery responsibility: identify what the platform hosts and sends, and any app or manual fulfillment step you must configure.
- Calculate total costs using your likely sales channels, recurring fees, and payment processing rather than comparing headline prices alone.
- Confirm that checkout, payment methods, payouts, and tax handling work in the countries where you and your customers operate.
- Review the provider’s current feature and pricing pages before purchase; platform fees and included features can change.
