Change Pixel Watch settings in this order: choose which phone apps may notify you, decide how the display wakes and how long it stays lit, configure an overnight mode, verify emergency features, then personalize the face and shortcuts. After that, check the version-dependent Notify when left behind feature and install updates before troubleshooting. There is no single best configuration: the right choices depend on whether you prioritize uninterrupted alerts, sleep tracking, battery endurance, or an always-visible screen.
The controls are split between the Pixel Watch and the Google Pixel Watch phone app. Connection type, watch model, software version, and country can change what you see and which safety features work.
Use this five-minute setup order
- Notifications: keep only useful app alerts and check that Bedtime, Do Not Disturb, or Theater mode is not muting them.
- Display and battery: choose Always-on Display, Tilt-to-wake, and a screen timeout that fit your day.
- Overnight behavior: use Bedtime mode if you sleep in the watch, while preserving the alarms and priority calls you need.
- Safety & emergency: complete Emergency SOS setup and verify that your model and connection support the features you expect.
- Personalization: select a readable face, useful complications, tiles, brightness, text size, sound, and vibration.
- Protection and maintenance: enable Notify when left behind if eligible, then update the watch and its apps.
Work through the sections below rather than copying someone else’s configuration. Each setting trades convenience, quiet, battery life, or coverage against another benefit.

1. Decide exactly which notifications reach your wrist
Choose apps individually
In the Google Pixel Watch phone app, open Settings > Notifications > App notifications. Enable only the apps whose alerts deserve an immediate interruption; disable noisy games, shopping, social, or promotional apps. This list is the most effective first filter because it prevents unwanted alerts before you have to silence them on the watch. Google documents the controls in its notification setup guide.

Check the three quick modes when an alert is missing
If an expected alert does not arrive, inspect Bedtime, Do Not Disturb, and Theater mode on the watch. Any of them can intentionally suppress sounds, vibration, screen wake, or other interruptions. Turn the mode off temporarily to determine whether it caused the silence, then configure a schedule or exception instead of leaving every alert enabled.
Bedtime mode is especially restrictive: Google states, “Only alarms, priority and repeat callers notify you.” It also changes screen behavior, Tilt-to-wake, and touch-to-wake behavior. That quiet is useful for sleep, but it can make a normal message appear to be broken.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
- In the phone’s system settings, confirm that the Pixel Watch app has permission to send notifications.
- In the Pixel Watch app, review options that mute a watch notification when you are actively using the phone or hide silent notifications.
- Confirm a supported connection: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or an active LTE setup where applicable. A paired phone must be powered on for phone notifications to be relayed.
- Turn off Bedtime, Do Not Disturb, and Theater briefly and send a test message.
- If the problem continues, follow Google’s notification troubleshooting steps, beginning with updates and ending with unlinking and pairing the watch again if necessary.
These controls are independent. Enabling an app does not override a phone permission, a disconnected watch, or a quiet mode.

2. Balance an always-visible screen against battery life
Always-on Display, Tilt-to-wake, and timeout
Always-on Display keeps the watch face visible without a wrist gesture. It is convenient for a glance at the time or a workout metric, but it consumes more power. Tilt-to-wake lights the display when you raise or rotate your wrist; it saves power compared with a continuously lit face but can wake accidentally or fail when your wrist is covered. A shorter screen timeout turns the display off sooner after interaction, while a longer timeout is easier when reading a long notification.

On the watch, open Settings and review the display controls for Always-on Display, Tilt-to-wake, brightness, and screen timeout. The same choices may be exposed in the Pixel Watch app, and labels can vary by model and software release. Turning off Always-on Display or Tilt-to-wake can extend runtime, but it changes how quickly information is available.
Know what Battery Saver changes
Google says Battery Saver disables Always-on Display and limits background activity; notifications may be delayed. It can be configured to switch on automatically at 15% battery. Use it when reaching a charger is more important than immediate background updates, not as a harmless display setting.
Google’s published maximums are useful for comparing models, not predicting your own day. The figures below are approximate maximums from California testing in 2026 with pre-production hardware and software and a median Pixel usage profile:

For Google’s current explanations and caveats, see the Pixel Watch battery guide. If your watch barely lasts a day, first test with Always-on Display off, a shorter timeout, and fewer background-heavy apps before assuming the battery is defective.

3. Configure an overnight mode that does not break your alarm
When Bedtime mode makes sense
Bedtime mode reduces interruptions and can reduce battery use while you wear the watch for sleep tracking. It suppresses ordinary alerts, dims or disables wake gestures, and preserves only the exceptions you designate. For someone who wants sleep data and a quiet night, it is usually preferable to manually silencing every app.
Protect alarms and priority contacts
Before relying on it, set the alarms you need and identify priority callers or repeat callers. Because only alarms, priority, and repeat callers notify in Bedtime mode, an ordinary contact or reminder can wait until morning. Test one alarm while wearing the watch so you know the sound or vibration is strong enough.
Pixel Watch 4 has documented automatic enter and exit controls. Review its custom options rather than assuming the schedule will suit your sleep time; an automatic exit that occurs too late can leave the watch quiet after you wake, while an automatic entry that starts too early can suppress evening notifications. Controls differ by model and software, so use the options shown on your watch. Google describes the mode in its notification guidance and battery guidance.

4. Verify emergency and safety features before you need them
Complete Emergency SOS setup
Open Safety & emergency on the watch and in the companion app. Review Emergency SOS, emergency contacts, and every safety feature available for your model and location. Make sure contacts are current and understand what an SOS from your watch means.

Understand the connection requirement
A Wi-Fi Pixel Watch relies on a nearby phone connected by Bluetooth to place an emergency call. An LTE model needs an active LTE connection for the watch itself to call emergency services. Wi-Fi availability, cellular service, country, model, and account setup all affect coverage; do not assume that an LTE-looking watch has calling service without an active plan.
Know the limits of crash detection
Google lists Car Crash Detection for Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Watch 4 on its safety page. Detection is not guaranteed, and high-impact activities can trigger it. Keep the feature’s limitations in mind and do not treat it as a substitute for contacting emergency services yourself. Availability is region- and model-dependent. Build a face for your routine
Choose a watch face, then adjust its color and layout. Add complications—small information panels such as weather, calendar details, or step count—only where they improve a glance. A face packed with live data can be harder to read and may use more background updates than a simple face. The best arrangement for commuting is not necessarily the best arrangement for sleep or exercise.
Add tiles as shortcuts
Tiles are swipeable shortcuts to frequently used features. In the Pixel Watch app, open the watch’s tile controls, choose Add, and remove tiles you never open. Place the most-used controls near the beginning so you do not scroll through a long carousel. Google’s customization guide documents adding and removing tiles along with face customization.

Make the interface physically readable
Adjust brightness for your environment, increase font size if small text strains your eyes, and set volume and vibration to a level you can notice without being startled. If you depend on vibration in meetings, a stronger pattern may matter more than a loud sound. Conversely, lower volume and vibration can make the watch less intrusive at night. These are preference settings, so change one at a time and test a real notification.
6. Turn on Notify when left behind only if your devices qualify
Notify when left behind is off by default and uses location and nearby-device permissions to warn you when the watch and phone separate. Google’s current help article lists these requirements among others:
- Pixel Watch 2 or newer.
- Android build CP1A or newer.
- Google Play services 26.08.30 or newer.
- Pixel Watch app 4.3 or newer.
- Bluetooth pairing between the phone and watch.
- Location and nearby-device permissions enabled as requested.
These version numbers are time-sensitive. Check Google’s current watch customization and settings information for the latest eligibility details before treating a missing toggle as a fault. The alert is useful in a café or office, but it can be noisy if you regularly leave the phone in one room and wear the watch elsewhere.

Install watch-system updates and update watch apps before deeper troubleshooting. In the watch’s Play Store, open Manage apps and select Update All. For an app’s access, use Settings > Apps & notifications > App permissions and confirm that required permissions remain granted. Google’s app-update instructions show these controls.
Updates can change labels, add model-specific options, and fix notification or connection defects. If notifications still fail after permissions, connection checks, and a restart, Google recommends unlinking and pairing again; back up anything you need before taking that step.
