If your Pixel is running out of space on the phone, turn on Smart storage. It automatically removes photos and videos from the device after they have been backed up when phone storage is nearly full. If the warning is about your Google Account, Smart storage will not fix it: check Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive storage separately.
First identify which storage is full
Your Pixel’s built-in storage and your Google Account’s storage are separate limits. A nearly full phone needs local files cleared or moved; a full Google Account needs cloud storage reviewed. Google Account storage is shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos, and Google says an account can include up to 15 GB across those services. Google Photos explains how account storage is counted.
- Phone storage warning: check Settings → Storage on the Pixel. Smart storage can help with backed-up photos and videos stored on the device.
- Google Account storage warning: check Google Photos’ Manage storage view to see which services or files are using the shared quota.
Turn on Smart storage to clear backed-up media from the Pixel
Smart storage is the one-setting fix when backed-up photos and videos are taking up local space. Google says it can automatically clear those items from the phone when device storage is almost full. The backed-up copies remain available in Google Photos while you have an internet connection. Google’s Pixel instructions for freeing phone space give this path:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Storage, then Free up space.
- Tap the menu, then Settings.
- Turn on Smart storage.
Smart storage only addresses local device space occupied by backed-up media. It does not increase your Google Account quota or clear Gmail and Drive files. If you would rather decide what to remove yourself, use Settings → Storage → Free up space to review available cleanup options on supported devices and Android versions.

Check Google Account storage before deleting cloud files
On Android, open Google Photos and tap your profile picture → Photos settings → Backup → Manage storage. The storage manager shows account usage and may suggest categories to review, such as large photos and videos. It can help identify what is consuming the shared quota before you delete anything. Google’s Android storage-manager instructions cover the app path and cleanup options.
Deleting a cloud item is different from removing only its local copy to free phone space. Review each selection before confirming: Google Photos items in the bin are permanently deleted after 30 days, while items deleted from Drive or Gmail through the storage manager are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Google also warns that permanently deleted content cannot be recovered with Google Takeout. See Google’s storage and deletion rules.

When changing Google Photos backup quality may help
Google says photos and videos backed up in Original quality use Google Account storage. If your account quota is the problem, review the backup-quality setting in Google Photos and check the terms that apply to your device and library before changing it. The effect depends on eligibility and existing uploads; a change does not necessarily alter how every item already in your library is counted. Google documents historical exceptions for some older uploads and certain Pixel-device backups, but those exceptions depend on dates and device eligibility and should not be assumed for every Pixel. Google’s explanation of Photos activity and storage describes the applicable rules.

Google announced that, starting June 1, 2021, new Google Photos uploads in High quality would count toward the shared quota, while eligible uploads made before that change were exempted. That historical policy date is not a general guarantee that a Pixel’s current backups are exempt.
Choose the fix that matches the space problem
| Option | What it addresses | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Smart storage | Local Pixel storage used by backed-up photos and videos | Requires the media to be backed up; it does not expand Google Account storage. |
| Google Photos storage manager cleanup | Shared Google Account quota | Review files carefully; some deletions are permanent. |
| Change Google Photos backup quality | Storage used by qualifying backups | Original quality uses account storage; existing items and Pixel-specific terms can vary. |
| Copy files to a computer | Local phone storage | Requires a compatible data cable and computer; it does not change cloud quota. |
| Google One plan | Additional shared account capacity | Paid, with availability and plan terms varying. |
Move local files off the Pixel or add account capacity
Copy files to a computer
If photos, videos, or other files are taking up phone space, Google also documents copying files and folders to a computer over USB, then deleting them from the phone. Use a cable that supports data transfer and is compatible with your Pixel and computer; a charging-only cable will not do the job. Google’s Pixel file-transfer guidance explains the process.
Consider more Google Account storage only if needed
Google One is an optional way to add shared account storage after you have checked what is using your quota. Google says its storage manager can also be used without a paid membership, so first inspect and clean up what you no longer need. Plan details and availability vary. Google One’s storage information describes its options.
