On a current Google Pixel, charging screensaver controls are under Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver. Turn on Use screen saver, choose what to display, then select While charging or While upright and charging under When to show. Some phones also offer Restrict to wireless charging. These controls affect the charging-time screensaver—not the lock-screen clock, notifications, shortcuts, or Wallet information, which are configured separately under Wallpaper & style > Lock screen.
What the Pixel screensaver controls
A Pixel screensaver is a full-screen display that can appear after the screen times out while the phone is charging or, on supported software, while it is upright and charging. It can show a clock, photos, colourful backgrounds, weather, home controls, or content from a supported app. It is a charging or docking display, not a replacement for the lock screen.
The exact labels depend on the Android version and Pixel software installed. Current Google instructions describe While charging and While upright and charging. Older Android interfaces used While charging, While docked, and While charging or docked. If your phone shows the older wording, use the equivalent option rather than assuming a setting is missing.
Set up a charging screensaver on a current Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch, then Screen saver.
- Turn on Use screen saver.
- Tap the screen-saver preview or chooser and select the content you want, such as Clock, Home Controls, Photos, Pixel Weather, or a supported app. The list varies by device and installed software.
- Open When to show and choose While charging or While upright and charging.
- If the option is present and you want the screensaver only on a wireless pad, enable Restrict to wireless charging.
- Use Use screen saver to preview the result. To test the automatic trigger, let the display time out while the selected charging condition is active.
Google says a screensaver starts when the display times out. Pressing the power button to turn the screen off prevents the screensaver from starting, so that action is not a reliable test. The phone must be left to reach its normal timeout.

Choose the trigger that matches your charging setup
| Setting | What it does | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| While charging | Allows the screensaver whenever the Pixel is connected to power and the display times out. | For wired charging, wireless charging, or any setup where orientation does not matter. |
| While upright and charging | Limits the screensaver to charging situations in which the phone is upright, such as a stand or compatible dock. | For a bedside or desk display where you want the screen visible only when the phone is positioned vertically. |
| Restrict to wireless charging | Prevents the screensaver from appearing during wired charging when enabled. | For people who want a display on a wireless pad but a dark screen when using a cable. |
| While docked (older interfaces) | Uses the older dock-based trigger; some versions also show While charging or docked. | For Pixels running software with the earlier screen-saver menu. Current phones may not show this label. |
“Docked” is not a universal promise that every stand or charger will be identified as a dock. Google’s current charging guidance specifically names Pixelsnap Charger and Pixel Stand (1st and 2nd generation) in its examples. A generic cable or wireless pad may charge the phone without exposing every dock-related behavior.
Understand what can appear on the screensaver
Clock
The Clock option turns the charging display into a time view. Its appearance is controlled by the screensaver’s available options and the phone’s current software. It is independent of the lock-screen clock style.
Photos and a personal photo frame
Photos can turn the charging display into a rotating frame. A personal photo frame requires permission to access photos and media. If the photo option is unavailable or blank, review the permission request and confirm that the selected account or album contains images.

Pixel Weather
Weather information uses location data. Google’s charging guidance says real-time weather requires location permission set to Always allow. Without that permission, weather may be unavailable or unable to update accurately.

Home Controls
Home Controls can put supported smart-home controls on the charging display. Availability depends on the device, software, and configured home services; it is not guaranteed on every Pixel.
Supported apps
The chooser can include compatible third-party or system apps. Because support varies by Android release and app installation, two Pixel models can show different lists even when both are fully updated.
Control dimming and low-light behavior
In a dark room, Pixel software can change the screensaver to a low-light clock or turn the display off. Open Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver > Low light mode to choose the documented behavior. Google identifies the transition to a low-light clock as the default on the current help page.

Screen timeout determines how long the ordinary display remains idle before it times out; only after that timeout can the screensaver appear. A long timeout delays the screensaver, while a short timeout brings it up sooner. Turning the display off with the power button bypasses the screensaver trigger.

How charging hardware changes the experience
The screensaver setting itself does not require a special purchase. A cable can satisfy While charging if the phone reaches its timeout normally. A stand or dock matters when you want the upright trigger, a visible bedside display, or a wireless-only rule.
Google’s documented examples include Pixelsnap Charger and Pixel Stand (1st and 2nd generation). Compatibility is device- and accessory-dependent, so check that your specific Pixel and charger support the expected charging mode before treating a stand as a dock. A phone can be charging successfully while still failing the “upright” condition or a dock-specific behavior.
| Goal | Recommended configuration | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Show a clock whenever power is connected | Use screen saver on; choose Clock; set While charging. | The display must time out; pressing the power button skips the saver. |
| Show a display only on a bedside stand | Choose While upright and charging and use compatible stand hardware. | Not every charger is recognized as an upright or docked setup. |
| Keep wired charging dark | Enable Restrict to wireless charging, if your software provides it. | The option is not present on every Pixel software version. |
| Use an older dock trigger | Select While docked or While charging or docked where those labels appear. | Those labels describe older interfaces and may not exist on current Android releases. |
Keep the screensaver separate from the lock screen
Changing a charging screensaver does not change the lock-screen clock, notifications, shortcuts, text, or Wallet information. The lock screen has its own controls. To edit it, open Wallpaper & style, tap Lock screen, and adjust the available settings.

This distinction explains a common misunderstanding: a Pixel can show one clock design while charging and another on the lock screen. The two displays are generated by different settings and can be changed independently.
Troubleshoot a screensaver that does not appear
The screensaver never starts
- Return to Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver and confirm Use screen saver is on.
- Check When to show. If it is set to While upright and charging, test with the phone actually standing upright; switch temporarily to While charging to isolate the orientation requirement.
- Leave the phone untouched until the configured screen timeout expires. Do not press the power button to test.
- If you enabled Restrict to wireless charging, test on a wireless charger rather than with a cable.
The menu says “docked” or lacks the newer label
That is usually a software-version difference. Older Google instructions use While docked and While charging or docked, while newer instructions use While upright and charging. Follow the labels shown on your Pixel instead of combining options from different Android releases.
Photos or weather are missing
- For photos, grant access to photos and media and verify that the selected source contains images.
- For real-time weather, grant location access as Always allow if the feature requests it.
- Remember that content choices vary by device configuration, Android version, and installed apps.
The lock-screen clock did not change
That is expected when you edit only the screensaver. Use Wallpaper & style > Lock screen for lock-screen clock, colour, size, notifications, shortcuts, and related information.
The phone charges but does not behave like a dock
Charging and docking are separate conditions. Confirm that the accessory is compatible with your Pixel, that the phone is positioned as required, and that the selected trigger matches the hardware. Google specifically documents Pixelsnap Charger and Pixel Stand generations for its charging screensaver examples; a generic accessory may provide power without the same dock behavior.
A practical way to choose your settings
- Decide whether the display should react to every charging session or only to a stand-like setup.
- Choose While charging for the broadest trigger, or While upright and charging when orientation should matter.
- Add Restrict to wireless charging if the screensaver should be limited to a wireless pad and the option appears on your phone.
- Select one content type, then grant only the permissions it needs: photos and media for a personal frame, or location set to Always allow for real-time weather.
- Set Low light mode for a dim clock or a dark display in a dark room.
- Test by allowing the screen timeout to elapse, then configure the lock screen separately if the desired change concerns the pre-unlock display.
The result is predictable once the conditions are separated: charging determines whether the screensaver is eligible, orientation or wireless restriction narrows that eligibility, screen timeout determines when it can start, and lock-screen settings control the independent display shown before unlocking.
