For most Pixel owners, leave Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization enabled. In Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization, choose Adaptive Charging if you normally charge overnight and want 100% near wake-up, or Limit to 80% if you usually finish the day with charge remaining and value long-term battery health more than maximum daily runtime.
Use Battery Saver or Extreme Battery Saver when you need the charge already in the phone to last longer. They conserve current power; they do not replace your charging-optimization choice.
The settings to change first
Pixel battery controls address three different problems, so changing the wrong one can produce disappointing results:
- Charging optimization controls how far and how quickly the phone charges while plugged in.
- Adaptive Battery and app optimization reduce unnecessary background use during everyday operation.
- Battery Saver modes stretch a low charge until you can plug in again.
Google’s current Pixel Help guidance recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization turned on. It also says a new or factory-reset phone can take a few weeks to learn usage patterns, so battery life immediately after setup is not a reliable baseline.

Feature availability and menu names vary by Pixel model and Android software version. If a control described below is missing, the phone may not support it or may use a different label.
How to set Adaptive Charging or the 80% limit
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery, then Battery health.
- Open Charging optimization and turn on Use charging optimization.
- Select Adaptive Charging or Limit to 80%, if your model offers the option.
Adaptive Charging: best for predictable overnight charging
Adaptive Charging still charges the phone to 100%. Its purpose is to delay the final part of charging so the Pixel reaches full capacity close to the time you normally unplug it, reducing the hours spent sitting at 100%.
Google says the feature needs about 14 days to learn your charging habits. A trip, rotating shifts, a new alarm time or charging at a different hour can prevent it from activating. During that learning period, charging may appear to finish normally rather than pausing near the top.

Pixel 4 has a special requirement: Google documents Adaptive Charging for a specified overnight charging period combined with an alarm condition. Pixel 4a and later learn charging habits instead. Therefore, instructions written for newer Pixels do not describe Pixel 4 behavior exactly.
Adaptive Charging is a good compromise when you want 100% most mornings but do not need the phone to reach 100% immediately after connecting it. If you often unplug at unpredictable times, its timing is less dependable; you can charge normally when you need an immediate full battery.

Limit to 80%: best for longevity when you have reserve
The 80% option stops ordinary charging below a full battery. Google lists it for Pixel 6a and later. Keeping the battery at a lower state of charge can reduce cumulative stress, but the direct trade-off is 20% less available runtime on that charge.
Use it when your normal day ends with plenty of charge left, or when the phone spends long periods connected to power at a desk or bedside. Turn it off temporarily before travel, a long workday, navigation-heavy day or any situation where the extra capacity matters.
For accurate capacity readings, Google says a Pixel using the 80% limit must still reach 100% every tenth cycle. When it does, leave the phone plugged in for at least 30 minutes after the screen shows 100%. This maintenance charge is intentional and does not mean the 80% setting has failed.
Keep Adaptive Battery and app optimization enabled
Adaptive Battery learns which apps you use and limits background activity that is not needed immediately. App battery optimization applies similar power-management rules at the app level. Google’s wording is direct: “To make sure your apps only use battery power when you need them, keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization turned on.”
These controls are enabled by default on supported Pixels. Check them after a factory reset, migration or troubleshooting session, because disabling optimization can create background drain that looks like a battery-health problem. A newly set-up or reset phone may behave differently for a few weeks while it builds a usage model.

Some apps need timely background work, such as messaging, authentication or location-based safety tools. If an app stops delivering important alerts, review that app’s battery-usage setting individually rather than disabling optimization for the entire phone. The exact controls and labels depend on the Pixel and Android release.
Use Battery Saver when the remaining charge is the problem
Battery Saver is an emergency-runtime control, not a battery-charging-health setting. Google allows it to be switched on manually or configured to activate automatically at a chosen battery level. It reduces background work and other activity so the percentage already in the phone lasts longer.
Extreme Battery Saver applies stronger restrictions for situations in which ordinary Battery Saver is not enough. Expect more noticeable limits on background apps and convenience features. Enable it when staying reachable is more important than normal smartphone behavior.
When a charge is critically low, the largest gains often come from what you stop doing. Avoid extended navigation, video streaming, gaming, hotspot use and other high-drain activities until you can charge. Battery Saver cannot compensate indefinitely for a workload that continuously uses the display, processor, modem or GPS.
Control heat and use a compatible charger
Heat accelerates battery aging and can also cause the phone to slow charging temporarily. Google recommends charging in a cool place, around 25°C (78°F), away from direct sun and other heat sources. Do not leave a charging Pixel in a hot car, under bedding or against equipment that traps heat.

Use a charger compatible with USB-C Power Delivery (PD) or Programmable Power Supply (PPS). Compatibility matters more than a large wattage number: the maximum charging rate depends on the Pixel model, charger, cable and current temperature. A higher-rated adapter does not guarantee that every Pixel will charge faster.
If charging slows while the phone is warm, move it to a cooler, ventilated place and reduce demanding use. Charging behavior can also change when battery-health safeguards are active; that is protective behavior rather than proof that the charger is defective.
Understand Battery health assistance and model differences
Battery health assistance is available on Pixel 6a and later, with controls that vary by model. On Pixel 9a and later, Google says it is enabled by default and cannot be turned off. The system gradually adjusts maximum battery voltage as the battery ages and can affect charging speed.
This feature is separate from the user-selected 80% limit. The 80% limit is an everyday charging choice; battery health assistance is an automatic age-related safeguard. A change in charging speed as the battery gets older can therefore occur even when your charging-optimization selection has not changed.

Check cycle information and decide when replacement is sensible
Google describes batteries as consumable parts. Its design guidance is for typical conditions, not a promise for an individual phone, because usage patterns, temperature and charging behavior all affect lifespan.

Pixel 8a and later can show cycle count under Settings > About phone > Battery information. Google lists Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro as models that do not show battery-health status in Settings. The absence of a status screen does not mean the battery is exempt from normal aging.
Replace a battery when capacity has fallen below the relevant guidance, runtime has become impractical, or the phone reports a battery fault. If the battery is swollen, stop using and charging the device and follow Google’s repair options. Do not open the phone or attempt a do-it-yourself battery repair; a damaged lithium-ion cell can be dangerous.
A practical setup sequence for a new or reset Pixel
- Finish system and app updates, then leave Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled.
- Choose Adaptive Charging if you normally charge on a predictable overnight schedule and want 100% near unplug time.
- Choose Limit to 80% if your ordinary day ends with charge remaining and longevity is the priority. Remember that the phone will periodically need a full cycle for capacity measurement.
- Use a compatible USB-C PD or PPS charger in a cool, ventilated location.
- After setup, allow a few weeks for usage learning before judging normal battery life.
- Configure Battery Saver to turn on automatically if you regularly run low; reserve Extreme Battery Saver for urgent situations.
What to do when behavior seems wrong
Adaptive Charging never appears to activate
Give it roughly 14 days of consistent charging. Check whether travel, changing alarms or an irregular schedule has removed the pattern it relies on. If you need a full charge immediately, charge normally rather than waiting for the adaptive schedule.
The phone reaches 100% while the 80% limit is enabled
Google’s maintenance requirement explains this: every tenth cycle may charge to 100%, and the phone should remain plugged in for at least 30 minutes afterward so its capacity estimate stays accurate.
Battery Saver did not make charging faster
Battery Saver only reduces consumption while the phone is running. It does not change the charging-optimization selection, battery-health assistance or the Pixel’s supported charging rate.
Charging is unexpectedly slow
Check temperature first, then the charger and cable. Move the phone out of heat and use a compatible USB-C PD or PPS adapter. Model-specific charging limits still apply, so changing the adapter alone cannot guarantee a higher rate.
Runtime remains poor after changing settings
Look at the phone’s battery-usage breakdown for an unusually active app, heavy navigation, video, gaming or hotspot use. Adaptive Battery may need weeks after setup or reset to learn the new pattern. Settings can reduce avoidable consumption, but they cannot restore capacity lost through normal battery aging.
