On a new Pixel 10, change settings in this order: secure the phone and Google Account, confirm device-finding and updates, review app permissions, decide what appears on the lock screen, and only then tune battery, display, accessibility, and shortcuts. This sequence protects your data before you optimize convenience.
There is no universally correct Pixel 10 configuration. Every change trades one benefit for another—for example, hidden lock-screen details improve privacy but make notifications less glanceable, while aggressive display-saving options can extend runtime at the cost of brightness or smoothness. Use the steps below as a decision guide, not a mandatory preset.
1. Secure the phone before personalizing it
Start with Settings > Security. This page brings together the controls that matter most if the phone is lost, stolen, or exposed to an unsafe app.
Choose a strong screen lock
Use a PIN or password that cannot be guessed from information visible on the phone. A longer PIN is harder to observe and reproduce than a short one. Avoid leaving the phone with no lock simply because face or fingerprint unlock is convenient; biometric methods are an additional way to unlock, not a replacement for a secure fallback lock.

Configure face and fingerprint unlock deliberately
Enroll only your own face and fingerprints, and test unlocking in the lighting and conditions in which you normally use the phone. Keep the screen lock available for situations where biometric recognition is unreliable or when Android requires the primary credential after a restart or security event.
Check Find My Device and update status
In the Security area, review Find My Device, the security update date, the Google Play system update, and the Play Protect status. Enable device-finding if you want to locate, lock, or erase the phone after it goes missing. Install security and system updates when the phone offers them, and investigate any warning displayed by the device rather than dismissing it automatically.
Run the Google security checkup
The security checkup can surface account sessions, recovery options, and other account-level issues. Complete it while you still have access to the new phone and your recovery methods. This is more valuable than changing cosmetic settings because it reduces the chance that a lost handset becomes an account takeover.
2. Review privacy and app permissions
Open Settings > Privacy for a first-pass audit. Pixel’s privacy tools include Privacy Dashboard, Permission manager, camera and microphone access, location controls, Activity controls, advertising settings, and usage-and-diagnostics controls.
Use Privacy Dashboard to spot unexpected access
Privacy Dashboard shows recent use of sensitive permissions. Look for an app accessing the microphone, camera, or location at times that do not match what you were doing. The dashboard is an activity view, not a guarantee that an app is harmless, so use it to decide which permissions deserve a closer look.

Trim permissions in Permission manager
Open Permission manager and inspect categories one at a time:
- Location: give precise or background access only when the app’s core function needs it.
- Camera and microphone: remove access from apps that do not capture photos, video, or audio.
- Contacts, calendar, and files: allow access only when it supports a feature you actively use.
- Notifications: keep alerts for useful apps, but remove noisy or untrusted senders.
When Android offers choices such as “Allow only while using the app,” prefer the narrowest option that still works. Revisit a permission after using the app; some features will request access later, when you can judge the need in context.

Activity controls, advertising settings, and usage-and-diagnostics controls are separate decisions. Read each toggle’s description and choose based on whether personalization and troubleshooting value outweigh the amount of data you want associated with your account or device. Changing one control does not automatically change the others.
3. Decide what notifications reveal on the lock screen
Lock-screen notifications are a privacy-versus-convenience choice. Showing full content lets you scan messages and reminders without unlocking; hiding sensitive content prevents a passerby from reading names, message text, or other details.
Set sensitive-content visibility
Open the lock-screen notification settings from Settings and choose whether sensitive notification details appear while the phone is locked. If other people could see the phone at work, in transit, or at home, hide sensitive content and require an unlock to read it. If the phone stays under your control and quick scanning matters more, showing content may be reasonable.

Control which apps can interrupt you
After setting the global lock-screen behavior, review individual notification categories for messaging, finance, health, and work apps. Keep high-value alerts visible and silence categories that create noise. This prevents an all-or-nothing choice between every alert and none.

Pixel also exposes lock-screen options such as shortcuts, Now Playing, and screen-wake behavior. Keep a shortcut if it saves regular steps; remove one that could expose a function to anyone holding the locked phone. Availability and menu names can vary with the installed software version, so use the labels currently shown on your device.
4. Leave Adaptive Battery and optimization enabled
Google’s guidance is explicit: “For best results keep Adaptive Battery and Battery Optimization on.” Adaptive Battery learns your usage patterns and limits background activity for apps you rarely use. Optimization after initial setup or a factory reset can take a few weeks to reflect your routine, so do not judge it from the first day.
Check the battery page before changing anything
Open Settings > Battery and inspect recent usage. Identify an app that consumes unusual power before applying a phone-wide restriction. A badly behaved app may need an update, a permission change, or removal rather than a darker screen for every activity.
Use display-saving options only when runtime matters more
Google lists several ways to reduce consumption:
- Lower brightness or leave Adaptive brightness enabled if it suits your environment.
- Use Dark theme if you prefer its appearance and want fewer bright pixels in relevant interfaces.
- Shorten screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you set the phone down.
- Turn off Always-on Display if constant at-a-glance information is not worth its power use.
- Disable Smooth Display if maximum refresh smoothness is less important than battery runtime.
These settings have no universal battery-life guarantee. A dimmer display can be harder to read, a short timeout can interrupt reading, and disabling Smooth Display changes scrolling and animation feel. Change one item at a time so you know which trade-off you accept.

5. Tune display comfort and accessibility
Once security, privacy, and battery behavior are settled, personalize Settings > Display & touch. The right values depend on your eyesight, lighting, hand position, and whether you use a screen protector.
Set brightness and text size for real conditions
Try Adaptive brightness in the places where you normally use the phone, then adjust the slider if it consistently overshoots or undershoots. Increase font size or display size if text is difficult to read; decrease them only if you genuinely need more content on screen. Larger values can change layouts and cause more scrolling, while smaller values can reduce readability.
Use Comfort View and Night Light as visual preferences
Pixel 10 models list Comfort View under Display & touch > Comfort filters. It applies a softer color filter whose intensity can be adaptive or manually adjusted. Use the strength and schedule that feel comfortable to you, especially in the evening. Comfort View is a display feature, not medical treatment or a diagnosis for eye problems.
Night Light is also found under Comfort filters on Pixel 10 phones other than Pixel 10a. Because the exact filter and schedule can affect how colors appear, disable it when accurate color matters, such as editing photos or checking a design.

Adjust touch sensitivity for your setup
If you use a screen protector, enable Screen protector mode when available to increase touch sensitivity. Adaptive touch is another documented control that can improve how the phone responds to taps. If accidental touches increase after raising sensitivity, revert the change and check that the protector is aligned and clean.

Choose Always-on Display intentionally
Always-on Display can show time and other information without a full wake. Keep it for glanceability if that saves you from repeatedly unlocking the phone; turn it off if you rarely look at it or are prioritizing battery runtime.

Swipe down to open Quick Settings, then use the edit control to add, remove, or rearrange tiles. Put controls you use repeatedly—such as flashlight, hotspot, screen recording, or an accessibility feature—where they are reachable without paging through the panel. Remove tiles you never touch so the first page remains useful.
For device-specific help, Google points Pixel 10 owners to Settings > Device health > Tips and support. That on-device guidance is particularly useful when a future software update changes a menu name or moves a control.

7. Configure Gemini only if you want an assistant
Gemini is the default assistant on Pixel 9 and later phones, which includes the Pixel 10 family. You can access it by voice, the power button, the Google app, or the Gemini app. Setup is optional; there is no security or battery requirement to use it.
Before enabling additional assistant access, consider where you are comfortable invoking it and what information you want available in responses. Feature availability and behavior can depend on account, region, language, eligibility, and software state. Some Google Assistant features are not available through the Gemini app, so check the current feature list if a particular command matters to you.
8. Match charging accessories to the Pixel 10 model
This is not a setting, but it prevents an avoidable purchase mistake after setup. Google says Pixel 10 and later devices, excluding Pixel 10a, support Qi2 wireless charging. Pixel 10 and later devices do not charge wirelessly with first- or second-generation Pixel Stand hardware. If you want wireless charging, choose a Qi2-compatible charger and verify compatibility with your exact model before buying.
For wired charging, use a compatible USB-C power adapter and check the phone’s hardware specifications for supported wattage. Do not assume that a higher-wattage adapter makes the phone charge faster; the phone and adapter must support the same charging behavior. Charge in a cool spot, especially when the phone is under load or inside a case.

How to choose between competing settings
| Decision | Choose the first option when you value | Choose the second option when you value |
|---|---|---|
| Lock-screen notification content | Privacy from anyone who can see the locked phone | Fast, glanceable message details |
| Display power controls | Longer runtime and less background or screen activity | Brightness, smooth scrolling, and always-visible information |
| Comfort filters | A warmer or softer appearance that feels easier to view | Original color appearance and color accuracy |
| Touch sensitivity | Reliable taps through a compatible screen protector | Fewer accidental touches when no protector is used |
| Wireless charging accessory | Qi2 convenience with a compatible charger | Wired charging when accessory compatibility or cost is the priority |
Revisit these choices after a week of normal use. Security and permission decisions deserve immediate attention; display and convenience settings are easiest to refine once you know how you actually use the phone.
