Start with Movie or FILMMAKER MODE, then change only the controls that solve a visible problem. Set overall light output for your room, treat HDR tone mapping separately, keep color changes restrained, and use Game Mode when response time matters. Do not copy a universal set of numbers: TCL says available options and where they are saved can differ by content, input, picture mode, model, and software.
Begin with the picture mode
Picture mode is the largest change you can make with one selection. Open your television’s picture controls from the Settings menu and choose the mode that matches what you are watching. The exact labels and available modes differ between TCL platforms and Mini-LED models.
Movie for conventional film viewing
TCL documents Movie as the mode intended for movie viewing. It is the sensible first choice for films and most scripted television when you want a less aggressively processed image. Treat it as a starting point, not a calibration result: room light, the active input, and the particular panel still affect the final appearance.

FILMMAKER MODE when supported
Use FILMMAKER MODE when your TV offers it and the content is intended to carry the creator’s picture style. TCL describes this mode as presenting supported movies and shows in the way their creators intended. Some titles, apps, inputs, or models may not expose the mode, so its absence does not indicate a fault.

When Standard or Vivid makes sense
- Standard is described by TCL as an everyday balance. It can be useful for mixed viewing in a bright room when Movie looks too subdued.
- Vivid enhances color and contrast. It may look brighter or more processed, which can help in strong daylight but can exaggerate saturation and highlight intensity.
Make this mode choice before fine adjustments. Advanced values can be stored separately for each picture mode, so a change made in Movie will not necessarily alter Standard or Game mode.
Adjust light output without confusing the controls
Mini-LED sets expose several controls that affect how bright the image appears, but they do different jobs. TCL’s guides distinguish overall screen or backlight output from Brightness (also called Black Level on some menus) and Contrast. Make small changes while viewing familiar scenes rather than changing every slider at once.
| Control | What TCL says it changes | Change it when | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall screen brightness or backlight control | Raises or lowers the display’s general light output. | The whole picture is uncomfortable in a dark room or too dim in daylight. | Extreme settings can make the image tiring or hide shadow detail; the correct level depends on room light. |
| Brightness / Black Level | Changes the level of dark portions of the signal. | Black areas look lifted gray or important shadow detail disappears. | Do not use it as a substitute for the television’s overall light-output control. |
| Contrast | Changes the level of bright portions of the signal. | Highlights lack impact or bright areas appear clipped. | Watch clouds, white shirts, and specular reflections for lost detail. |
TCL’s Google TV guide states that “Available options may vary depending on the content, input, picture mode, and TV model.” See the TCL Google TV settings and user manual guide for the terminology used on your software version. The QM8K documentation also shows model-specific controls, so do not assume that a slider on one Mini-LED family behaves identically on another.

Dynamic Tone Mapping
TCL describes Dynamic Tone Mapping as balancing HDR brightness and detail. If an HDR image looks generally too dark, the setting may change how the television maps bright HDR signals to its panel. If highlights look unnaturally boosted or lose texture, try the other available state. The preferred choice depends on the room, the title, and the model; TCL does not publish one setting that is correct for every Mini-LED TV.
Peak Luminance and Local Contrast
On relevant models, Peak Luminance affects maximum brightness in local-dimming areas. Local Contrast adjusts backlight intensity by area and signal contrast. These controls can influence the impact of HDR highlights and the separation between bright objects and dark backgrounds.
- Change Peak Luminance when HDR highlights lack impact after you have selected an appropriate picture mode and room brightness.
- Change Local Contrast only when you can identify a problem such as distracting brightness behavior, weak separation in dark scenes, or a halo-like change around bright objects.
Make one change at a time and revisit the same scene. A setting that improves a sunlit landscape can make a dark film scene less natural, so there is no reason to force one HDR value across every genre.
Keep color changes conservative
Color controls are easy to over-adjust because a more colorful image can look impressive for a few minutes while being less faithful to the source.

Color Temperature
Color Temperature shifts the overall tone toward warmer or cooler rendering. A warmer choice can look less blue-white, while a cooler choice can make the picture appear more icy. Use familiar neutral objects—white subtitles, clouds, or a gray wall—to judge the direction, and stop when skin tones and neutrals look believable.
Color Saturation
Color Saturation changes intensity. Raise it only if the image is visibly washed out; lower it if faces, grass, or animated colors look fluorescent. Small moves are easier to evaluate than a large jump.
Adaptive Color Temperature
Adaptive Color Temperature can respond to ambient room light, changing the picture’s appearance as the lighting around the set changes. If two viewing sessions look different even though you did not touch the other controls, check whether this feature is enabled. Disable it when you want a consistent reference while comparing content; leave it enabled if adapting to changing room light is more useful to you.

Choose how much motion processing you want
TCL’s motion controls address different artifacts and preferences. Motion Clarity adds compensation intended to reduce judder or blur. LED Motion Clear, where offered, controls the backlight for moving images. Both can change perceived smoothness and brightness, and neither is automatically best for every viewer.
For films and scripted shows
Begin with motion processing at its least intrusive setting, then test a slow camera pan or a scene with moving text. Increase compensation only if judder is distracting. Too much compensation can make filmed material look unusually video-like, so judge the result over several scenes rather than a single action shot.
For sports and live video
Sports can benefit from additional motion processing when a ball or camera pan looks blurred. Compare the player, the field markings, and the scoreboard: a setting that smooths the ball but creates trails around players is not an overall improvement. LED Motion Clear may alter brightness while it works, so check the light level again after enabling it.
Use Game Mode when responsiveness matters
Game Mode reduces some image processing to lower input lag on supported inputs. TCL’s Roku instructions describe it as available on HDMI and AV inputs for the referenced platform, but the exact availability depends on your model and software. If your television offers a gaming menu, verify which HDMI input and signal features it supports before changing other picture controls.

- Connect the console or PC to the HDMI input you will use.
- With that input active, open the picture controls and select Game Mode (or the model’s equivalent gaming preset).
- Play a familiar game that requires timing. Confirm that controls feel more immediate and that the TV has not switched to an unexpected resolution or refresh-rate option.
- Check the model-specific menu for supported refresh-rate or synchronization features. TCL’s newer guide lists Game Direct Sync for certain gaming signals, not for every TCL Mini-LED television.
Game Mode is a trade-off: less processing can improve response while changing motion, tone mapping, or other image behavior. Keep a separate Movie or HDR profile for films rather than trying to make one profile serve both uses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Apply settings separately to each source
Many TCL televisions save picture adjustments by input and picture mode. A change made while watching a built-in streaming app may not carry to a console on HDMI 1, and a Movie adjustment may not carry to Game mode.
- Identify the source you are watching: built-in app, antenna, HDMI device, or another input.
- Open the picture menu while that source is active and select the intended mode.
- Adjust only the controls needed for that source and content type.
- Repeat the check on every HDMI device and streaming source you use.
- If your Google TV software offers an option to apply picture settings to the current input or to all inputs, choose deliberately. Applying to all inputs can save time, but it can also overwrite profiles you tuned for games or HDR.
TCL explains the per-input and per-mode behavior in its picture-settings support instructions and describes the Google TV apply-settings choices in TCL Google TV video settings.
A practical sequence for common viewing situations
Films in a dim or controlled room
- Select Movie, or FILMMAKER MODE when the content and television support it.
- Set overall light output so dark scenes are comfortable without raising black areas.
- Leave Color Saturation and advanced color controls near their starting values unless a clear color problem is visible.
- Use a restrained Motion Clarity setting if film judder bothers you; otherwise avoid adding compensation simply because it is available.
HDR movies in a bright room
- Start playback of the HDR title before changing settings.
- Check Dynamic Tone Mapping, then evaluate Peak Luminance and Local Contrast only if highlights or dark-scene separation need attention.
- Recheck the result in both a bright highlight and a shadow-heavy scene.
Daytime television and mixed programming
- Movie remains a useful baseline, but Standard may be easier to see in strong daylight.
- Raise overall screen output rather than using Contrast or Color Saturation to make the entire image appear brighter.
- Keep Adaptive Color Temperature in mind if the room’s lighting changes during the day.
Console or PC gaming
- Use the active HDMI input’s Game Mode.
- Confirm the input-specific refresh-rate or sync options documented for your exact model.
- Keep a separate profile for cinematic games if you prefer more processing and are willing to accept additional latency.
Troubleshoot by symptom instead of copying numbers
| What you see | First control to inspect | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The whole picture is uncomfortable or too dim. | Overall screen brightness or backlight control. | It changes general light output without treating every bright or dark signal as a contrast problem. |
| Dark scenes look gray. | Brightness / Black Level, then Local Contrast if the issue is area-based. | These controls address dark-signal level and local backlight behavior, respectively. |
| HDR highlights lack impact. | Dynamic Tone Mapping and, on supported models, Peak Luminance. | Those controls affect HDR brightness/detail balance and maximum local brightness. |
| Faces or grass look unnaturally intense. | Color Saturation and Color Temperature. | They control color intensity and overall warm/cool tone. |
| Camera pans stutter. | Motion Clarity. | TCL describes it as compensation for judder or blur; test a low setting first. |
| Game controls feel delayed. | Game Mode on the active HDMI or AV input. | It reduces processing intended to lower input lag on supported configurations. |
What cannot be standardized across TCL Mini-LED TVs
There is no evidence in TCL’s published menu guides for a universal brightness value, one best Local Contrast or Peak Luminance level, or identical menus across all Mini-LED families. The exact model, platform, software version, region, input, picture mode, HDR format, and room lighting all matter. The QM8K user guide is useful for understanding one current Mini-LED family, but it should not be treated as a specification for every TCL television; consult the official QM8K guide only when your model is in that series.
For a reliable setup, make a visible-problem-first change, watch several representative scenes, and record which input and mode you changed. That approach respects TCL’s per-source storage while avoiding settings copied from a different panel or room.
