Start with a film-accurate picture preset, set the TV’s light output for your room, and test local dimming on real scenes. Then check SDR and HDR separately, leave white-balance controls alone unless you can measure your own panel, tailor motion processing to the content, and enable Game Mode for gaming when it is available. There is no universal numeric recipe: menu names, defaults and Mini LED behavior vary by model, input and firmware.
What to change first
1. Choose an accurate starting picture mode
For films and scripted shows, select the mode intended to preserve the creator’s appearance. Depending on the television, it may be called Filmmaker, Cinema, Movie, Professional or another “accurate” mode. These labels are useful starting points, not guarantees. A mode with the same name can behave differently on another brand, model or firmware version.
RTINGS used Filmmaker Mode as its accurate out-of-box preset on the Samsung QN80H and Vizio Mini LED Quantum 4K, while it selected Professional on the Sony BRAVIA 7 II. Those examples show why the mode name alone should not determine your final choice. Watch a familiar film with natural skin tones, neutral whites and shadow detail before deciding whether a brighter standard or dynamic mode is preferable for your room.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Set screen light output for the room
Adjust the control that determines how much light the panel produces—often named Backlight, Panel Brightness, OLED Light, or simply a model-specific light-output control. Increase it for a bright room or strong daylight; reduce it for a dark room so highlights are comfortable and blacks do not appear lifted by eye fatigue or reflections.

Do not assume the control named Brightness changes the panel’s light output. On many televisions, Brightness controls the black level: raising it can make dark areas gray, while lowering it can crush shadow detail. Manuals and picture menus often separate this control from backlight intensity. Change one control at a time and use a scene containing both near-black detail and bright highlights to check the result.
LG support notes that the picture you see depends on the television’s capabilities, room lighting, screen reflectance, picture settings and the video content itself. That is why a setting that looks right in a showroom or online demonstration may be uncomfortable or inaccurate in your home.
3. Check settings while the intended signal is playing
Many televisions store separate values for SDR and HDR, and some change menus automatically when HDR starts. Begin with ordinary SDR content, make your room-light adjustment, then start an HDR title and check the active picture mode and light controls again. Repeat for any Dolby Vision or other format your set supports.
Do not rely on a paused home screen to judge HDR. The TV may not have entered HDR mode until the video is playing, and some options are hidden or replaced after the signal changes. Confirm the information banner or picture menu identifies the format before editing settings.
How to tune Mini LED local dimming
What local dimming does
A Mini LED backlight divides the screen into many independently controlled zones. The television dims zones behind dark portions of the image and raises zones behind bright portions. This can improve contrast and make highlights more intense than on a conventional full-array backlight, but the zones are larger than individual pixels. Light can therefore spill around subtitles, stars or other small bright objects.

Test the available levels instead of assuming “High” is best
Local-dimming options may be called Local Dimming, Auto Local Dimming, Adaptive Backlight or a similar term, with choices such as Low, Medium and High. Play several types of content and compare the levels from your normal seating position:
- Dark scenes with subtitles: look for a bright halo around white text or for the entire subtitle zone to flash.
- Small bright objects on black: test stars, a flashlight, a streetlight or white credits against a dark background.
- Mixed-color scenes: check whether a bright red, blue or green object changes nearby colors or causes a visible patch of the wrong tint.
- Slow camera movements: watch for zones that brighten or darken in blocks rather than following the image smoothly.
Use the strongest setting only if its extra contrast is worth the side effects on your panel. The Sony BRAVIA 7 II discussion from RTINGS documented color cross-talk at a high local-dimming setting on that model. Sony support has also recommended lowering or disabling Auto Local Dimming for a particular bright-background uniformity complaint. That is symptom-specific guidance, not a universal recommendation to turn local dimming off.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If Low or Medium produces less blooming but makes blacks look gray, compare it again with a real film rather than a test pattern. Some viewers prefer a small halo to the loss of shadow depth; others notice the halo immediately. Your viewing distance, subtitles and room reflections affect the choice.
Color temperature, color and white balance
Use a warm film-mode starting point
Accurate film-oriented modes commonly use a warmer color temperature than the cool, blue-looking default found on many store displays. If your TV offers Warm, Warm 1 or Warm 2, try the option associated with its movie or professional preset. Judge white objects and skin tones in varied scenes, not a single white screen: a room with blue daylight can make a neutral setting appear too warm, while warm lamps can make it look too cool.

Do not copy another owner’s calibration values
Two units of the same model and screen size can require different white-balance adjustments. RTINGS’ Samsung QN80H and Vizio guides both warn that calibration varies by individual panel. Their numerical settings are measurement examples for those review samples, not values to paste into your television.
Leave the two-point and multipoint white-balance controls at their default unless you have a colorimeter, suitable software and the ability to measure your own screen. Incorrect adjustments can introduce a color cast or remove detail from one part of the brightness range. Professional calibration is optional; it is not required to obtain a good picture from a new Mini LED TV.
Keep enhancement controls conservative
Dynamic contrast, live color, flesh-tone enhancement and similar processing can make a demo image look vivid but may clip highlights or distort colors in normal programs. Turn them down or off while establishing a neutral baseline. You can then add one enhancement deliberately if you prefer its appearance, recording the original value so it is easy to reverse.
Motion processing: films, sports and mixed content
Motion controls may be labelled Motion Smoothing, Judder Reduction, Blur Reduction, TruMotion or a manufacturer-specific name. Smoothing can reduce visible judder in some broadcasts and make sports easier to follow, but it can also create the “soap opera” appearance and produce halos or doubled edges around moving objects.

The Philips/Roku manual warns that more smoothing can cause undesirable artifacts on some content. For films, start with smoothing disabled or at its lowest level if you want a cinema-like cadence. For live sports, test a moderate setting while watching the ball, scoreboard and players; the best compromise for sports may look unnatural on a film. Motion settings can also be stored separately by input or signal type, so verify the active source before concluding that a change did nothing.
Gaming settings and input lag
Enable Game Mode or automatic low latency
Game Mode reduces image processing and input lag on televisions that support it. Enable it for the HDMI input used by a console or PC, or enable ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) when both the source and TV support automatic switching. The television may switch out of its movie preset when a game signal arrives; check the active mode after launching a game.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reduced processing can change motion, sharpening and local-dimming behavior. Compare a game’s dark areas and bright highlights after switching modes, and adjust the game-specific picture controls if your television stores them separately. Motion-clarity or black-frame-insertion features may make movement look sharper but can reduce brightness or introduce flicker. Keep them only if the benefit is visible during your games.
Balance latency against image processing
| Priority | Useful starting choice | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest practical input lag | Game Mode with ALLM enabled when supported | Some processing and motion options become unavailable |
| Film accuracy | Filmmaker, Cinema, Movie or Professional mode | May look less bright than a showroom preset |
| Maximum perceived punch | Brighter standard or dynamic mode | Colors, shadow detail and highlights may be less accurate |
| Motion clarity | Moderate smoothing or a game motion option | Possible soap-opera appearance, artifacts or reduced brightness |

- Prepare the room. Set the lamps and curtains to the conditions in which you normally watch. Sit at your usual distance and viewing angle.
- Start SDR video. Select the film-oriented or professional preset and disable store-demo features if the TV is still in a retail mode.
- Set light output. Adjust Backlight, Panel Brightness or the equivalent control for comfort. Leave black-level Brightness near its default until you have checked shadow detail.
- Check black level. Use a dark scene with visible texture. If blacks look gray, lower the black-level control slightly; if coats, hair or dark objects merge into a solid patch, restore the previous value.
- Evaluate local dimming. Compare Low, Medium and High with subtitles, small highlights and mixed-color scenes. Keep the level that best balances contrast and visible artifacts.
- Set color temperature. Try the warm option associated with the accurate preset. Avoid multipoint white-balance changes without measurements.
- Tune motion for the content. Use low or disabled smoothing for films, then test sports separately if you watch it often.
- Start an HDR title. Confirm HDR is active and repeat the light-output, local-dimming and motion checks. Do not assume SDR values transferred.
- Configure gaming inputs. Enable Game Mode or ALLM for the console or PC input, then verify brightness and motion behavior in an actual game.
- Save per-input preferences. If the TV offers separate settings for HDMI ports, apps and formats, record your preferred values so a firmware update or source change is easier to diagnose.
Common symptoms and targeted fixes
| What you see | First adjustment to try | Why it may help |
|---|---|---|
| Gray-looking blacks in a dark room | Lower black-level Brightness slightly; verify local dimming is active | The black-level control may be raised, or the backlight zones may not be dimming |
| Lost detail in dark clothing or hair | Raise Brightness back toward default and check the source is not using a different HDR setting | Shadow detail may be crushed by an overly low black level |
| Halo around subtitles or stars | Try a lower local-dimming level | Less aggressive zone transitions can reduce blooming |
| Colors change beside bright objects | Lower local dimming and disable extra color enhancement | Zone spill or cross-talk can tint nearby areas |
| Films look unnaturally smooth | Reduce or disable motion smoothing | Interpolation is adding generated frames |
| Games feel delayed | Enable Game Mode or ALLM on the active HDMI input | Lower processing generally reduces input latency |
| Game image is too dim after switching modes | Recheck the Game Mode light-output and HDR controls | Game and movie modes may store separate values |
What not to change without a specific reason
- Do not copy online white-balance numbers. They describe a measured sample, not your individual panel.
- Do not judge only from a store preset. Retail modes are designed for bright lighting and may exaggerate color and sharpness.
- Do not use one SDR adjustment for every format. HDR can activate a separate picture mode and control set.
- Do not disable local dimming automatically. First determine whether blooming, uniformity or color artifacts are actually bothering you.
- Do not raise sharpness to fix soft streaming. Compression, source resolution and viewing distance can be the real causes, while excessive sharpness adds outlines.
When professional calibration is worthwhile
Built-in presets are sufficient for most owners. Consider measurement-based calibration only if you need a reference-grade result, can control the room’s lighting, and are prepared to measure the actual television rather than rely on settings from another unit. A colorimeter or calibrator can establish grayscale, gamma and color accuracy for your panel, but neither is a prerequisite for sensible setup.
Firmware updates can rename options, alter defaults or change how a mode handles HDR and local dimming. After a major update, confirm the active picture mode for each input and format before assuming your saved preferences still apply.
Bottom line
Use an accurate film preset as your baseline, match light output to the room, and make local dimming decisions by watching real content. Treat SDR, HDR and gaming as separate cases; keep white-balance changes measured and conservative; and choose motion processing according to what you watch. The best Mini LED settings are the ones that preserve detail and comfort on your particular TV, not a copied list of numbers.
