Use PHP 8.5 for a new LEMP server in 2026 when your application, extensions, framework and Linux distribution packages support it. Use PHP 8.4 when testing finds a real compatibility blocker, but put a dated 8.5 upgrade on your backlog. Do not start a new deployment on PHP 8.2: its upstream security-support period ends on 31 December 2026.
The branch choice is only half the decision. PHP-FPM receives security fixes through point releases, so whichever branch you select must be patched promptly and tested behind the same Nginx configuration you will use in production.

What the recommendation means
A LEMP stack combines Linux, Nginx, a MySQL-compatible database and PHP, normally through PHP-FPM (FastCGI Process Manager). Nginx serves static files and forwards requests for PHP scripts to an FPM socket. The PHP branch controls the language runtime and extension ABI; the FPM service and its pool settings control how that runtime handles web, queue and scheduled-job traffic.
PHP 8.5 is the newest supported branch in the 2026 decision window. The PHP project lists PHP 8.5.11 as released on 24 September 2026. That version number is a point release, not a promise that 8.5.11 will remain current: later security and bug-fix releases supersede it. A production server should track the current 8.5 patch offered by its trusted distribution source.

PHP 8.4 is the sensible fallback when a framework, extension, proprietary library or deployment tool is not yet ready for 8.5. Running 8.4 is a compatibility decision, not a security shortcut; it still needs every available 8.4 patch and a plan for moving forward.
Support lifetimes you should plan around
PHP’s upstream policy gives each branch two years of active support followed by two years of critical-security support. After the security-support date, upstream no longer provides a supported path for a new installation, even if a Linux vendor later offers limited maintenance under its own policy.

The dates are branch-level milestones. They do not mean every build in a branch is safe until that day. Canonical’s CVE-2026-6735 advisory, published 10 May 2026, lists affected patch levels in PHP 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5. Supported branches therefore still require prompt point-release updates.
How to choose between PHP 8.5 and 8.4
Start with application and extension compatibility
Inventory the exact framework version, Composer constraints, required PHP extensions, binary extensions, image and database drivers, debugging tools, queue workers and deployment scripts. A project that declares a broad constraint such as ^8.2 may still fail because a transitive package, an extension’s ABI or a custom module has not been tested on 8.5.

Run the application’s dependency checks in a disposable environment using the candidate runtime. For Composer projects, composer check-platform-reqs verifies the PHP version and extension requirements of the installed dependency set. It does not replace functional testing: an extension can be present while a changed behavior breaks a code path.
Check distribution package availability
Linux distributions publish PHP packages on their own schedules. One distribution may expose 8.5 in its standard repositories while another offers 8.4 as its newest tested package. Package naming, socket paths and service names also differ. Before committing to a branch, confirm that your chosen distribution has a maintained FPM package, the extensions you need and a security-update channel you can operate.

Do not mix random binary packages into production simply to obtain a newer minor version. If the distribution does not provide 8.5, choose a supported packaging source with clear ownership and update procedures, or use 8.4 until the operating-system platform catches up. Record the source and pin the configuration so a future administrator can reproduce it.
Estimate migration risk
Moving from 8.4 to 8.5 is usually lower risk than moving from an older, unsupported branch, but risk is application-specific. Pay particular attention to warnings promoted to exceptions, stricter type handling, changed default settings, serialization, date and time behavior, database drivers, image processing, and extensions with native code. Review the PHP migration documentation for the exact minor versions involved and turn each relevant change into a test.

Compare the maintenance runway
8.5 gives a new server the longest upstream runway: security support through the end of 2029. 8.4 ends a year earlier. Choosing 8.4 can be correct when it prevents an outage today, but the cost is another compatibility project sooner. PHP 8.3 has only until the end of 2027, and 8.2 reaches its upstream security end on 31 December 2026, so neither is a sound default for a fresh host.

A staging-first deployment plan
Switching the FPM socket on a live host before testing can turn a routine version change into a site-wide outage. Build a staging host that matches production’s Linux distribution, Nginx version, database connectivity, extensions, environment variables, filesystem permissions and process limits.
- Inventory the current runtime. Record
php -v,php -m, the framework and Composer lock file, enabled FPM pools, OPcache settings, queue workers, cron jobs and any command-line PHP used by deployment scripts. The web SAPI and CLI SAPI can load different configuration files, so capture both. - Install the candidate FPM branch in staging. Refresh package metadata with
sudo apt update, inspect availability withapt-cache policy php8.5-fpm, and install the FPM package plus the extensions your application requires, for examplesudo apt install php8.5-fpm php8.5-cli. Package names and repository availability vary by distribution; substitute the exact supported package names shown by that system. If 8.5 is unavailable or a required extension cannot be supplied, repeat the exercise with 8.4. - Enable and inspect the service. Start the selected service with
sudo systemctl enable --now php8.5-fpm(or the service name supplied by your distribution). Confirm that it is running usingsystemctl status php8.5-fpmand identify the actual socket under/run/php/or the path declared in the pool configuration. Never assume the socket name from another distribution. - Point a staging Nginx server at that socket. A conventional server block contains a PHP location similar to this:

}The include-file name differs between distributions. Validate the path, document root and socket against the files installed on your host. Run sudo nginx -t before reloading with sudo systemctl reload nginx.
- Exercise every workload. Test login, forms, uploads, payments or other critical transactions, database reads and writes, cache behavior, API clients, email, queue workers, scheduled commands and long-running jobs. Test both normal traffic and failure paths such as a database timeout or an invalid upload. Watch application logs and the FPM journal while the tests run.
- Verify performance-related settings. Compare FPM pool values such as
pm.max_children, process idle limits, request timeouts and user/group permissions with production capacity. Confirm that OPcache is enabled for the web SAPI, has enough memory for the codebase and is reset safely during deployment. A branch upgrade is not a reason to copy a tuning file blindly; calculate worker counts from available memory and observe saturation. - Run automated checks and repeat them after dependency updates. Unit and integration suites catch language and extension regressions; browser or API smoke tests catch routing and session problems. Keep the 8.5 staging path in continuous integration if you temporarily deploy 8.4, so the fallback does not become permanent by accident.
- Prepare a reversible cutover. Keep the known-good FPM service and configuration available until the new branch has passed acceptance checks. During a maintenance window, install the production packages, enable the new pool, update only the intended
fastcgi_passsocket, runnginx -t, reload Nginx and watch error rates and FPM logs. If errors appear, restore the previous socket, validate the configuration again and reload Nginx; investigate the failed request before attempting another switch.
Keeping PHP-FPM secure after deployment
Patch the point release, not just the branch
Schedule package updates at a frequency that matches your change-control process, and prioritize PHP security advisories. Check the installed version with php-fpm8.5 -v or the equivalent command provided by your distribution, then compare it with the newest package offered by your trusted source. The command name can differ, so use the service’s documented binary when necessary.

Apply updates to staging first, run the regression suite, then promote the same package versions to production. Restart or reload FPM as required by the package, and confirm that the running workers have picked up the patched binary. A package update that leaves old workers alive until timeout can create a window in which requests still execute vulnerable code.
Separate web and background workloads
Use an explicit FPM pool for applications that need different limits or Unix users, and run queue workers with the intended CLI PHP binary. Check that a deployment does not update the web runtime while a supervisor, cron task or worker continues using another branch. Mixed runtimes make failures intermittent and complicate rollback.

For the first hours after a switch, watch Nginx upstream errors, HTTP 5xx responses, FPM “child exited” or “server reached pm.max_children” messages, slow requests, memory usage and queue latency. Correlate spikes with the deployment time. Keep the previous package and configuration until the observation period ends and backups have been verified.

The package cannot be found
The repository for your distribution may not publish PHP 8.5 yet, or its package index may be stale. Confirm the operating-system release, refresh package metadata, and check the vendor’s supported repositories. If the required extension is missing, do not compile an unmaintained mixture of modules in production; use 8.4 temporarily or select a platform that supplies a coherent, updateable set.

Nginx returns 502 Bad Gateway
Check that the FPM service is active, the socket path in Nginx exactly matches the pool’s listen path, and the Nginx worker user can access the socket. Inspect the FPM journal for startup or permission errors, run sudo nginx -t, then reload Nginx after correcting the configuration.
The site loads, but a feature fails
Compare the extension list between old and new runtimes, inspect application logs for deprecation or type errors, and run the failing request against staging with debugging enabled only in that non-production environment. Verify that CLI workers use the same branch and that environment variables and file permissions were preserved.
Workers run out of memory or requests queue
Review OPcache size, FPM process limits and the host’s available memory. Increasing pm.max_children without measuring per-worker memory can force the kernel to terminate processes. Reduce concurrency or move background jobs to a separately sized pool before raising limits.
When PHP 8.4 is the right answer
Select 8.4 when a documented compatibility test fails on 8.5 and the application cannot be upgraded before launch. Record the failing dependency, the owner and a target date for retesting. Keep 8.5 in staging or continuous integration, update 8.4 point releases promptly, and treat the 31 December 2028 support date as a hard planning boundary. If the blocker is an extension with no 8.5 build, reassess whether replacing that extension is safer than carrying an aging runtime.
