There is no single best LineageOS phone for everyone. The safest choice is a model with a current entry in the official LineageOS device directory, an installation guide for your exact variant, an unlockable bootloader, firmware that matches the guide, and cellular support for your country and carrier. Start with those checks before comparing cameras, processors, battery life, or price.
Two useful examples in the current official documentation are the Google Pixel 6 (oriole), whose updater instructions refer to LineageOS 22.2, and the Google Pixel 4a (sunfish), which has LineageOS 22.2 installation instructions. They are examples to investigate, not a definitive ranking: the documentation does not establish that either is the best overall value, works with every carrier, or is available at a particular price.
What “best” means for a LineageOS phone
LineageOS is installed by replacing the phone’s factory software with a community-maintained Android distribution. That makes compatibility more important than a conventional phone-buying specification sheet. A model can have excellent hardware yet be a poor LineageOS purchase if its exact variant has no official build, its bootloader cannot be unlocked, its required firmware is unavailable, or essential calling features do not work on your network.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallUse this order of priorities:
- Official support for the exact model and variant. Retail names are not enough. A regional or carrier variant may use a different codename, modem, or partition layout.
- Current maintenance and build availability. A page, forum post, or old video is not proof that new official builds are still published.
- Bootloader-unlock eligibility. The phone must permit the unlock process in your region and sales channel.
- Installation requirements. Check the required stock firmware, computer tools, USB debugging, and any device-specific procedures.
- Network suitability. Verify LTE bands, calls, SMS, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling with your carrier.
- Condition and economics. On a used phone, battery health, screen condition, storage, and seller return rights can outweigh a small difference in specifications.
Only after these filters pass should you compare performance, cameras, size, charging, or price.

Official examples to investigate, not a ranked shortlist
The official LineageOS pages surfaced for this topic provide two concrete starting points. Their documentation is valuable because it identifies device codenames and gives procedures tied to particular software versions. It does not provide a complete market ranking.
| Phone and codename | What the official documentation establishes | What it does not establish | How to use the example |
|---|---|---|---|
Google Pixel 6 (oriole) |
Official updater instructions refer to LineageOS 22.2. | No universal ranking, current price, battery condition of used units, or carrier coverage by country is stated. | Open the live device page, confirm that your exact model is oriole, and read the current install and update instructions before buying. |
Google Pixel 4a (sunfish) |
An official LineageOS 22.2 installation guide is available. The guide calls for a particular stock firmware version, an unlocked bootloader, a computer with ADB and fastboot, and USB debugging. | No claim that it is faster, cheaper, better supported, or more compatible than every other phone is established. | Use the guide to assess whether you can meet its firmware, computer, backup, and network requirements. |
| Moto G5 | The official device page labels it no longer maintained. | Its old instructions do not prove that current official builds exist. | Treat it as a warning about maintenance status, not as a current recommendation. |
The version reference in these pages is time-sensitive. LineageOS 22.2 instructions are evidence that those pages documented that release; they are not a promise that the same release, procedure, or maintenance state will remain unchanged. Check the live page immediately before purchase and again before flashing.
How to verify a phone before you buy it
Perform these checks with the seller’s exact model number in hand. Do not rely on a photograph of the product name alone.

1. Find the exact device entry
Search the official LineageOS device directory for the manufacturer name, model designation, and codename. Record the codename exactly. For the examples above, Pixel 6 is oriole and Pixel 4a is sunfish. If the directory groups several variants together, select your variant and follow the corresponding guide; the wiki explicitly directs readers to do this.
2. Match the seller’s variant
Ask for the model number shown in Android settings, on the original box, or on the regulatory label. Compare it with the variants named by the device page. Differences in carrier branding, regional radio hardware, storage, or single- versus dual-SIM configuration can change compatibility. If the seller cannot identify the exact variant, treat that uncertainty as a reason to pause rather than assume it is interchangeable.
3. Check the maintenance label
Look for a current official page with recent build or updater information. A page marked no longer maintained, such as the Moto G5 page, means you should not buy on the assumption that official updates continue. Historical installation instructions can remain online after maintenance ends.
4. Read the complete installation guide
Do this before paying. Device instructions are not interchangeable: a guide for another Pixel, another storage configuration, or another LineageOS release may use different firmware, partitions, or steps. Note every prerequisite, including stock firmware version, bootloader state, required computer tools, and any warnings about data loss.

- Carrier: This phone is locked to Tracfone, which means this device can only be used on the Tracfone wireless network. Tracfone plan required, activating is easy, just 3 steps.
- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.
- CAMERA SYSTEM: Advanced 50MP Quad Pixel camera captures sharp, detailed photos and videos in any lighting condition
- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
5. Confirm bootloader unlocking
LineageOS installation normally requires an unlocked bootloader. Eligibility can depend on the exact model, carrier, region, and whether the phone was sold through a carrier that restricts unlocking. The official guide is the authority for the device-specific requirement. If unlocking is blocked, do not assume a workaround is safe or supported.
6. Check your network before flashing
Compare the phone’s regional radio model with the bands and services used by your carrier. Ask whether calls, SMS, LTE data, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling are supported for that model in your location. Community reports can be useful clues, but the final decision should be based on your carrier’s requirements and the exact hardware variant.
7. Evaluate the used device
Check battery health, charging, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons, fingerprint reader, screen burn-in, USB port condition, and water damage. Confirm that the phone is not financed, reported lost, or locked to another account. A replacement battery or damaged port can make the installation process difficult even when software support is excellent.
8. Preserve a return option
Buy only when you can test the phone during the seller’s return period. Keep the stock system intact until you have verified the model, carrier functions, bootloader status, and the prerequisites in the LineageOS guide.

Installation requirements that affect your choice
Flashing a supported phone is still a technical project. The Pixel 4a guide illustrates the practical baseline: a computer with ADB and fastboot, USB debugging enabled on the phone, an unlockable bootloader, and the specified stock firmware. Other devices can add or change requirements, so use this as a planning checklist rather than a universal recipe.
A computer and data-capable USB connection
ADB and fastboot are computer tools used to communicate with Android while the phone is running normally or in a bootloader mode. Install the versions and drivers called for by the device guide. A charge-only cable, unreliable USB hub, or missing driver can interrupt the process. The documentation does not endorse a particular computer or cable; the requirement is simply a reliable data connection and a compatible computer environment.
USB debugging and developer settings
Enable Developer options and USB debugging on the stock phone when the guide requests it. Android menu names can vary by release, so follow the device page rather than a generic video. You may need to approve a computer-authorisation prompt on the handset.

Stock firmware matching the guide
Some devices require a particular factory firmware version before LineageOS is installed. The official pages warn that incorrect firmware can cause installation failure or unexpected crashes. Download and verify the exact package named by the guide; do not substitute a file merely because it has the same marketing name or comes from a different region.
Backup and data-loss planning
Bootloader unlocking erases the phone. Copy photos, messages, authenticator data, contacts, and app-specific files to a separate location before you begin. Export recovery codes and confirm that you can sign back into important accounts. A backup stored only on the phone will be erased along with everything else.
Time for recovery
Have the stock firmware and the official recovery path available before flashing. If a step fails, stop and reread the device guide instead of repeating commands at random. Do not disconnect the phone during a write operation unless the instructions tell you to do so.
Test the stock phone before changing software
Official installation guidance recommends booting the stock system and checking the device’s functions first. This separates a hardware or carrier problem from a LineageOS problem.
- Place and receive a normal voice call.
- Send and receive SMS messages.
- Connect to mobile data and confirm LTE where your plan supports it.
- Test Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, cameras, microphone, speaker, vibration, charging, and biometric unlock.
- If you depend on VoLTE or Wi-Fi calling, test those services with your SIM in the stock system.
Some devices need VoLTE or VoWiFi provisioning to occur while they are running the manufacturer’s software. If the guide or carrier says this applies to your model, complete that provisioning before flashing. Installing LineageOS cannot compensate for a service that was never activated on the account or radio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCarrier and regional compatibility deserves its own decision
LineageOS support and cellular support are separate questions. An official build can install correctly while a particular carrier blocks registration, lacks a required band, or does not provision IMS services for that model.
Identify the radio variant
Use the model number and region listed by the manufacturer, not only the retail name. Imported phones may have different bands or modem firmware. A dual-SIM configuration can also behave differently from a single-SIM model.

Ask the carrier precise questions
Ask whether the exact model is permitted on the network, whether its IMEI can be activated, and whether VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling are supported for that model. Ask what happens when the phone is no longer running the manufacturer’s software; some carriers certify devices by model and firmware combination.
Plan for changing network policies
Carrier support can change independently of LineageOS. Keep the stock firmware available if you need to return the phone to its factory state for troubleshooting or a carrier support call.

Use a worksheet instead of a subjective “best phone” list. Record evidence for every candidate and mark unknowns explicitly.
| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Evidence standard |
|---|---|---|
| Official maintenance | Is the device currently maintained, and are current builds listed? | Live official device page; a historical page is insufficient. |
| Exact variant | Does the seller’s model number match the supported variant and codename? | Manufacturer or device label plus the LineageOS variant selector. |
| Bootloader | Can this regional or carrier model be unlocked? | Official unlocking rules and a test on the actual handset where possible. |
| Firmware | Is the required stock firmware available for the region? | Current device-specific installation guide. |
| Installation effort | What computer tools, modes, and recovery steps are required? | Count the guide’s prerequisites and warnings; do not infer from another model. |
| Network | Will calls, SMS, LTE, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling work on your carrier? | Carrier requirements plus the exact radio variant. |
| Condition | Is the battery, port, screen, and hardware reliable? | Hands-on inspection and a return window. |
| Total cost | What will the handset, shipping, battery, and possible repair cost? | Current local listings and the individual unit’s condition; no comparative price is established by the official pages. |
When an answer is not established, write “not stated” and investigate it. An unknown is not the same as a pass.
What the Pixel 6 example tells you
The Pixel 6 entry, identified by the codename oriole, is worth investigating because official updater instructions refer to LineageOS 22.2. That is a concrete sign that the device has documented update procedures for that release. It is not proof that every Pixel 6 sold under that name is compatible or that the phone is the best choice for your budget.
Before buying one, verify the seller’s exact model against oriole, read the current installation page, check whether the bootloader can be unlocked in your region, and confirm your carrier’s voice and data requirements. Then inspect the individual phone’s battery and USB port. The official updater reference does not state current prices, used-device condition, or regional carrier suitability.

What the Pixel 4a example tells you
The Pixel 4a entry, identified by sunfish, has an official LineageOS 22.2 installation guide. The guide’s requirements make it a useful example of the work involved: you need the specified stock firmware, an unlocked bootloader, a computer with ADB and fastboot, and USB debugging. Unlocking the bootloader erases the phone, so a complete backup is mandatory.

Use the Pixel 4a guide as a pre-purchase checklist, not as a guarantee of value. Confirm that the exact unit is sunfish, that the required firmware is available for its region, and that your carrier supports its radio and calling features. Test the phone on stock before installation, including calls and messaging and any VoLTE or Wi-Fi calling you rely on.
Why older or abandoned devices are risky
The Moto G5 page being marked no longer maintained demonstrates why age alone is not a useful selection criterion. An inexpensive phone can still be a poor LineageOS purchase if official maintenance has ended, security updates are unavailable, or the installation files no longer match current requirements.
Do not treat an archived guide, a successful installation video, or a forum post as evidence of current official support. If a device page says it is no longer maintained, consider it outside a compatibility-first recommendation unless you have a specific reason to accept unofficial maintenance and its risks.
A safe purchase-to-install workflow
- Shortlist models from the official directory. Record each codename and maintenance label.
- Obtain the exact model number. Reject listings that cannot identify the regional or carrier variant.
- Read the live device guide. Note firmware, bootloader, computer, USB debugging, and backup requirements.
- Check the carrier. Verify bands, IMEI activation, calls, SMS, LTE, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi calling.
- Buy with a return window. Preserve the stock system and all accessories until testing is complete.
- Test stock functions. Make calls, send SMS, test data, and inspect hardware.
- Back up everything. Store the backup away from the phone and save account recovery codes.
- Prepare the computer. Install the guide’s ADB and fastboot tools and ensure a stable data connection.
- Unlock only when ready. Expect the unlock to erase user data and follow the device-specific warning.
- Install exactly as documented. Do not mix steps or firmware from another model.
- Re-test essential services. Confirm calls, SMS, mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cameras, and any IMS-dependent service after setup.
- Keep recovery material. Retain the stock firmware and notes about the working configuration.
Common failure modes and what to do
The phone is not detected by ADB or fastboot
Check the USB cable, port, computer driver, USB debugging authorisation, and the phone’s current mode. Follow the device guide’s detection checks. Avoid changing several variables at once; you need to know whether the problem is the connection, driver, mode, or phone.
The guide rejects the firmware
Stop. Recheck the exact codename, regional model, and required stock firmware version. Incorrect firmware can cause installation failure or unexpected crashes. Do not force a package from a similar-looking model.
Unlocking is unavailable
Confirm that the handset is not a carrier-restricted variant and that the manufacturer’s eligibility rules are met. If the actual phone cannot be unlocked, return it or choose another supported variant rather than relying on an unsupported bypass.
Calls or SMS fail after installation
Recheck the SIM, carrier provisioning, radio variant, and device guide. Compare behaviour with the stock system. If VoLTE or Wi-Fi calling required stock provisioning, restoring stock may be necessary to complete that step.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The phone crashes or will not boot
Review every firmware and installation step against the current guide. Do not assume a crash proves the hardware is defective; the official warning specifically notes that incorrect firmware can produce unexpected crashes. Use the documented recovery path and keep personal data backups separate from the phone.
A practical decision rule
Choose a LineageOS phone only when all of these statements are true:
- The exact model and variant have a current official device entry.
- The maintenance state and available build are acceptable to you.
- The bootloader can be unlocked for that handset and region.
- You can obtain every firmware file and tool named by the guide.
- You have a computer, reliable data connection, and a complete backup plan.
- The stock phone passes calls, SMS, data, and hardware tests.
- Your carrier supports the model’s bands and required voice services.
- The used phone’s condition and return policy make the risk acceptable.
If any item is unknown, the phone is not yet a safe recommendation. Resolve the uncertainty or select a different device. On the evidence available here, the Pixel 6 (oriole) and Pixel 4a (sunfish) are sensible pages to investigate because official LineageOS 22.2 documentation exists for them, while the Moto G5’s no-longer-maintained label shows why current status matters more than an old success story.
