There is no universal satellite-to-cell compatibility list. Support depends on the exact phone model and regional variant, carrier, plan, software version, country, and the feature you need. Apple’s satellite tools work on every iPhone 14 or later where available. In the United States, Verizon’s Skylo service supports selected Samsung Galaxy S25, Galaxy Z Fold7, Galaxy Z Flip7, Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 models, while T-Mobile maintains a larger, frequently updated device list for T-Satellite. O2 in the United Kingdom and One NZ in New Zealand publish their own handset and plan requirements. A phone that connects through one service is not automatically supported by another.

What “satellite-to-cell” means

Satellite-to-cell describes a phone using a satellite connection when nearby mobile towers or Wi-Fi are unavailable. The phrase covers several different products rather than one global network.

  • Apple’s built-in satellite features: iPhone 14 and newer models can use satellite connectivity for Emergency SOS, roadside assistance, Messages and location sharing in supported countries and with compatible software.
  • Carrier direct-to-cell services: A supported ordinary smartphone connects to the carrier’s satellite partner for functions such as SMS, MMS, location sharing or limited app data. The phone, account and carrier network must all be eligible.
  • Emergency-only capabilities: Some offerings provide a dedicated SOS workflow but do not support normal texting, voice calls or app data.

These categories should not be treated as interchangeable. Apple’s satellite features do not require a T-Mobile or Verizon satellite add-on, and a handset listed for a carrier service may not work with another carrier’s satellite system.

Apple: iPhone 14 and later

Supported iPhone generation

Apple states that every iPhone 14 or later model can connect to a satellite when mobile-network and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, provided the feature is available in the country or region and the phone has compatible software. This includes the standard, Plus, Pro and Pro Max models in those generations; the exact regional availability still matters.

What you can do

  • Text emergency services through Emergency SOS via satellite.
  • Request roadside assistance where that feature is offered.
  • Send messages to friends and family.
  • Share your location through supported Apple features.

These functions are not identical. Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Find My and Messages have different availability, privacy behavior and setup requirements. A user should check which feature is offered in the destination country instead of assuming that every iPhone satellite function is enabled there.

Connection conditions

Move outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Buildings, dense tree cover, steep terrain and other obstructions can block or weaken the connection. Apple says a message may take 30 seconds or longer even in ideal conditions; surroundings and network conditions can make it take longer or prevent delivery. Satellite messaging is therefore a best-effort connection, not a guaranteed broadband link.

United States: T-Mobile T-Satellite

Which phones work

T-Mobile does not define compatibility as “any recent smartphone.” It maintains a live eligibility list and continues adding devices. Check the exact phone model, software and account status in that list before buying a handset or traveling. A phone that supports Apple’s satellite features is not automatically eligible for T-Satellite, and an Android model supported by T-Satellite is not automatically supported by Verizon’s Skylo service.

Coverage and functions

T-Satellite is designed for outdoor areas where a user can see the sky. T-Mobile describes service across outdoor areas in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Japan, subject to coverage and network conditions. The service can provide text and picture messages, location sharing, selected satellite-ready apps and WhatsApp voice chat. Data capacity is limited, so app behavior, response times and message delivery can differ from normal terrestrial service.

Plan requirements

T-Mobile says T-Satellite is included with certain Experience plans and is otherwise available as a monthly add-on. The included-plan names, add-on price and eligibility rules are account-specific and can change, so verify the current terms before activating service. A compatible handset by itself does not create access if the line is on an ineligible plan.

United States: Verizon’s Skylo service

Supported Android models

Verizon’s current Skylo FAQ lists these phones:

  • Samsung Galaxy S25, S25 Edge, S25+, and S25 Ultra.
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7.
  • Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
  • Google Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL.

Check the exact model and regional availability on Verizon’s current page; a family name alone is not enough to establish support.

Messaging requirements and exclusions

Google Messages must be the default messaging application. Skylo supports two-way basic text messaging and SOS. Verizon’s description excludes MMS, RCS and attachments, so a text-only workflow should be expected rather than normal picture messaging or a full-featured chat experience. The phone also needs a line of sight to the satellite, normally meaning an outdoor location with an unobstructed sky view.

Cost and iPhone distinction

Verizon says there is no extra fee for Satellite SOS and messaging with Skylo. Verizon iPhone customers should be treated separately: the carrier directs iPhone 14-or-later users to Apple’s satellite features, which require iOS 18 or later where available. That is a different feature set from Skylo’s selected Android service.

United Kingdom: O2 Satellite

Handsets on O2’s list

O2’s maintained compatibility list spans selected Samsung Galaxy S23, S24, S25 and S26 models, along with selected A-series and Z-series phones. It also lists iPhone 13 through iPhone 18 families, including specific 16, 17 and 18 variants and the listed iPhone Air and Duo models. Google Pixel 9 through Pixel 11 models are included as listed by O2. Because individual variants matter, do not infer support from “Galaxy S25,” “iPhone 17” or “Pixel 10” alone; compare the exact model identifier with O2’s list.

Plan and features

O2 describes Satellite as a £3-per-month bolt-on for eligible Pay Monthly customers, or included with an Ultimate plan. In areas without O2 terrestrial coverage, a compatible phone can connect automatically. O2 lists messaging, location sharing and supported apps as uses.

Emergency-calling limitation

O2 Satellite does not support standard voice calls, including emergency calls. Do not rely on this service to contact emergency services. If emergency access is a primary reason for carrying a phone, arrange a separate safety method and verify ordinary cellular coverage for the route.

Launch context

Virgin Media O2 announced that O2 Satellite switched on on 26 February 2026 using Starlink Direct to Cell. The launch described messaging and data in apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger and Google Maps, initially with the latest Samsung devices and more devices to follow. The maintained compatible-device page is the authoritative place to check model-level support.

New Zealand: One NZ satellite service

Eligibility and coverage

One NZ requires both an eligible phone and an eligible plan. The service is intended for locations outside traditional One NZ cell-tower coverage and is currently available only in New Zealand. One NZ warns that an overseas-purchased phone is not guaranteed to work, even if its name appears to match an eligible model. Confirm the device’s regional variant and account eligibility before travel.

Supported communication

The service supports text and MMS and selected apps. Some app functions are limited or behave differently over the satellite link because capacity is lower than on a terrestrial network. Expect delays and restricted data behavior rather than ordinary mobile broadband.

111 and backcountry safety

An ordinary 111 emergency call cannot be made where no traditional cellular network is available. One NZ describes an exception for registered 111 TXT users with hearing or speech difficulties. The provider also says its satellite service does not replace a personal locator beacon (PLB) or emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB), and recommends carrying a PLB for backcountry or rural trips. A PLB is a separate safety device, not a phone accessory and not a universal requirement for satellite messaging.

Services announced or trialed are not necessarily available

VodafoneThree and AST SpaceMobile

VodafoneThree announced customer trials of its AST SpaceMobile/Satellite Connect Europe service for summer 2026, with a target capability covering data, voice and SMS. That announcement did not establish a final consumer launch date, commercial plan or compatible-device list. Treat it as a trial announcement unless a newer official customer eligibility page confirms a public launch.

Proposed United States joint venture

AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announced an agreement in principle on 14 May 2026 to form a direct-to-device joint venture. The announcement said definitive agreements still needed negotiation and customary closing conditions remained. It is not proof that a new joint service is already available to subscribers.

Network announcements versus customer eligibility

SpaceX has described Starlink Direct to Cell messaging for T-Mobile customers in the United States and One NZ customers in New Zealand, connecting directly to 4G LTE phones. Such network announcements explain the underlying technology, but the carrier’s current handset and plan pages should govern a purchase or activation decision.

How to check whether your phone will work

  1. Identify the exact model. Open the phone’s About screen and record the model number, not only the retail family name. Regional variants can use different radios, firmware and certification.
  2. Choose the service first. Decide whether you need Apple Emergency SOS, carrier messaging, app data, location sharing or another function. Compatibility is service-specific.
  3. Check the country and carrier. A phone supported in the United States may not be supported by O2 in the United Kingdom or One NZ in New Zealand.
  4. Verify the plan. Confirm whether satellite access is included, requires a bolt-on or is restricted to a particular account type.
  5. Install required software. Apply the carrier-recommended operating-system update. Verizon Skylo users must set Google Messages as the default messaging app; Apple satellite features require compatible iOS.
  6. Confirm the feature list. Look separately for SMS, MMS, RCS, app data, voice, SOS, roadside assistance and location sharing. Do not assume that “satellite messaging” includes all of them.
  7. Test before relying on it. Learn the on-screen satellite connection flow in a safe outdoor location. Do not create an emergency test message or assume that a successful setup guarantees service in a canyon, forest or storm.

What affects satellite performance

  • Sky visibility: Buildings, trees, cliffs and roofs can interrupt the link.
  • Location: Services are intended for areas outside terrestrial coverage, but each carrier defines its own supported territory and roaming behavior.
  • Bandwidth: Basic text may work while photos, map data or voice features are delayed, compressed or unavailable.
  • Queueing and delays: Even Apple’s ideal-condition guidance allows 30 seconds or more for a message; carrier services can take longer when network demand or obstructions increase.
  • Software and defaults: A supported radio is insufficient if the required operating system, messaging app or account configuration is missing.

Emergency planning: do not confuse messaging with calling

Satellite messaging, satellite SOS and satellite voice are separate capabilities. Verizon Skylo supports SOS and basic two-way text on listed Android phones, while O2 explicitly excludes emergency calls and One NZ says ordinary 111 calls are unavailable without traditional cellular coverage. Apple’s Emergency SOS is a distinct Apple feature with its own regional and software requirements.

Before a remote trip, write down the exact emergency method your service supports, carry a charged phone, keep the operating system current and plan for no connection. In New Zealand backcountry areas, One NZ recommends a PLB; that recommendation reflects the limitations of phone-based satellite messaging and is not a claim that every traveler everywhere must carry one.

Buying and travel checklist

  • Match the exact model number to the provider’s current list.
  • Confirm the phone was sold for the country where you will use the service.
  • Check the required iOS or Android version and messaging-app setting.
  • Verify whether your plan includes satellite access or charges a monthly add-on.
  • Read the supported-function list instead of relying on the word “satellite.”
  • Expect outdoor, clear-sky use and possible delays.
  • Carry an independent emergency device when the provider says phone service is not a replacement for one.

The Bottom Line

Satellite-to-cell support is determined by the service, not simply by owning a modern phone. Check the exact handset variant, software, country, carrier plan and supported functions on the provider’s current eligibility page, and never assume that messaging access provides emergency calling.
