Buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max if portraits are your priority. It won the portrait comparison in 91mobiles and was also preferred by Tom’s Guide for facial detail, highlight control and edge treatment. Choose the Pixel 11 Pro XL if you most often shoot at about 5x and want natural-looking color. Choose the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you need the longest useful zoom range or photograph mixed urban night scenes.

There is no universal winner. The two recent comparisons disagree about low-light performance because they used different scenes: Galaxy won a flare-heavy urban test, while iPhone produced the better exposure and shadow detail in a backyard-tree scene. Match the phone to the pictures you actually take rather than to a single overall ranking.

Quick recommendation by photography priority

Your priority Best-supported choice Why Important qualification
Portraits of people iPhone 18 Pro Max Best subject separation and bokeh in 91mobiles; Tom’s Guide preferred its facial detail, clothing definition and handling of bright backgrounds. Portrait rendering and preferred skin tone are subjective, and results vary by face, light and focal length.
Night scenes with lights and distant detail Galaxy S26 Ultra 91mobiles found the strongest flare management and detail in its selected urban scene. Tom’s Guide favored iPhone in a different low-light scene, so this is not a blanket night-photography victory.
Frequent use around 5x Pixel 11 Pro XL Its dedicated 48 MP 5x telephoto and optical stabilization support native framing; 91mobiles found clean detail and low noise. Beyond native optical framing, image processing contributes more to the result.
Longer zoom, including 8x and 40x Galaxy S26 Ultra Tom’s Guide found it ahead of iPhone at 8x and 40x in its comparison. Extreme zoom is processed output, not equivalent to detail from a native telephoto lens.
Color that looks closest to the scene Pixel 11 Pro XL 91mobiles judged Pixel’s color the most faithful in its tested scenes. “Natural” is a preference; some photographers prefer a brighter or more contrasty rendering.

These are comparative results from specific editorial tests, not laboratory guarantees. A different subject, movement, light source or camera distance can change the ranking.

Portraits: why the iPhone 18 Pro Max leads

91mobiles’ three-phone portrait test

In the September 30, 2026 91mobiles comparison, reviewers matched the scene while using each phone’s available optical telephoto range: 5x on the Pixel 11 Pro XL and Galaxy S26 Ultra, and 4x on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The iPhone produced the most convincing overall portrait, especially in subject separation and the appearance of background blur.

Galaxy retained the best facial detail when the samples were inspected closely. Pixel reproduced the scene’s colors most faithfully, but its separation between subject and background was less convincing in that particular portrait. That distinction matters if you value accurate color more than a pronounced portrait effect.

Tom’s Guide’s iPhone-versus-Galaxy result

Tom’s Guide reached a similar portrait conclusion in its iPhone 18 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra face-off. Both portrait modes separated the subject and rendered bokeh effectively, but the reviewer favored iPhone for balancing bright background highlights while preserving facial and clothing definition. The article describes both modes as a hybrid of camera hardware and software depth mapping, so the visible result is not determined by lens specifications alone.

John Velasco, Tom’s Guide’s Senior Channel Editor for Phones, described the iPhone result this way: “This one’s an easy win for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, mainly for how it balances the background highlights across Bryant Park bathed in harsh sunlight behind me.” The comment explains the practical advantage: a face that remains readable without turning a bright background into a featureless white patch.

When another phone may suit your portraits

Pick the Galaxy if you prefer the extra facial crispness seen in the 91mobiles inspection and also want longer zoom options for candid portraits. Pick the Pixel if faithful color is more important to you than maximum background blur. If you regularly photograph children, pets or moving people, remember that focus timing and shutter speed can outweigh small differences in bokeh rendering; the published comparisons do not establish a universal winner for motion.

Low-light photography: the answer depends on the scene

Why Galaxy won one night test

In 91mobiles’ three-phone low-light scene, the Galaxy S26 Ultra was the winner. The setup included lights, distant objects and people. Galaxy controlled stray light and flare more effectively and preserved detail in the selected urban view. Pixel’s color looked more authentic, but the review noted greater haze around light sources. iPhone landed between the two in that scene.

Why iPhone won another

Tom’s Guide tested a backyard tree at night and preferred the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It produced better exposure, cleaner shadow detail and greater sharpness. The Galaxy struggled to lock focus under those conditions and showed LED-light bleed that affected the frame.

The tests used different subjects, light sources and procedures. It is reasonable to infer that those differences explain the conflicting outcomes, but the publications did not run a controlled cross-publication experiment. Therefore, do not describe either phone as categorically best in low light.

Choose according to your night subjects

  • Urban streets, signs and mixed light: Galaxy’s 91mobiles result is the stronger indication, particularly if flare around lamps is your main problem.
  • Dark foliage, yards and static scenes with deep shadows: iPhone’s Tom’s Guide result points to cleaner exposure and shadow detail.
  • Scenes where color fidelity matters most: Pixel showed the most authentic color in 91mobiles’ comparison, although it produced more haze around lights.
  • People moving at night: None of these comparisons establishes a definitive winner. Focus acquisition, subject movement and your willingness to use night mode will matter more than a headline ranking.

Zoom: separate native optical framing from processed reach

Pixel 11 Pro XL for practical 5x photographs

91mobiles awarded its 5x comparison to the Pixel 11 Pro XL, describing the result as consistent, with minimal noise and detail loss. Google’s listed rear-camera system includes a 50 MP wide camera, a 48 MP ultrawide and a 48 MP 5x telephoto with optical image stabilization. The combination explains why Pixel is a particularly sensible choice when 5x is a frequent, real-world framing rather than an occasional novelty.

Google identifies 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x and 10x as optical-quality framing levels on its product page. “Optical-quality” does not mean every level comes from a separate lens: some levels use sensor crops and computational processing. The same page lists 120x Pro Zoom as a maximum processed feature. Treat that number as an indication of available magnification, not as equivalent to the detail captured by a 5x optical telephoto.

Galaxy S26 Ultra for 8x and farther

Tom’s Guide found the Galaxy S26 Ultra better than the iPhone 18 Pro Max at 8x and 40x. Galaxy’s dedicated 5x periscope camera gives it a hardware base for longer reach, while processing contributes significantly at 40x. If you photograph stages, distant architecture, wildlife or details across a street, Galaxy offers the more capable long-range option among these two phones.

iPhone at its native range

In the same Tom’s Guide comparison, the iPhone was sharper than Galaxy at the exact 4x setting. The reported iPhone hardware is a 48 MP main camera, 48 MP ultrawide and 48 MP 4x telephoto. That result illustrates why a phone can look best at its own native telephoto range yet lose at a more distant crop: matching the displayed magnification does not mean matching the underlying optical capture.

How to judge a zoom specification

  1. Identify your usual framing. Decide whether you normally shoot at 2x, 4x, 5x, 8x or beyond. A phone optimized for your common range is more useful than one with an impressive maximum number.
  2. Check whether that range is native. A dedicated telephoto or periscope lens generally provides a stronger starting image than a heavy crop from the main sensor.
  3. Expect processing at long reach. At 10x, 40x or 120x, sharpening, multi-frame fusion and reconstruction affect the result. Fine textures may look artificial even when the subject is recognizable.
  4. Stabilize the phone. Optical stabilization helps, but at long focal lengths a wall, railing or small tripod can make a larger difference than a modest megapixel increase.

Camera hardware in context

Phone Rear-camera hardware reported in the comparisons What it means for this decision
Pixel 11 Pro XL 50 MP wide, 48 MP ultrawide, 48 MP 5x telephoto with optical image stabilization. Strong foundation for 5x framing and stabilized detail; 91mobiles also favored its natural color.
Galaxy S26 Ultra 200 MP main, 50 MP ultrawide, 10 MP 3x telephoto and 50 MP 5x periscope, as described by Tom’s Guide. Multiple telephoto options support flexible framing and longer zoom, especially at 8x and beyond.
iPhone 18 Pro Max 48 MP main, 48 MP ultrawide and 48 MP 4x telephoto, as described by Tom’s Guide. Its tested strengths are portrait rendering, facial detail and sharpness at 4x.

Megapixel counts alone do not establish image quality. Lens design, sensor size, stabilization, autofocus, exposure algorithms and the phone’s multi-frame processing all contribute. The hardware figures above are context for the tested behavior, not a calculation that predicts a winner.

A practical decision process before you buy

  1. Rank your picture types. Put portraits, night scenes and zoom in order from most to least important. Do not give all three equal weight if one accounts for most of your photos.
  2. Choose your portrait approach. Select iPhone for the most consistently praised separation and highlight handling; select Galaxy if facial detail and longer reach matter more; select Pixel if natural color is your priority.
  3. Describe your typical night scene. Street lamps and distant lights favor the Galaxy evidence; dark trees and shadow-heavy scenes favor the iPhone evidence; color fidelity favors Pixel in the tested samples.
  4. Set a zoom ceiling. If you stop around 5x, Pixel is the evidence-backed specialist. If you regularly go to 8x or farther, Galaxy is the safer choice. If 4x is your normal portrait distance, iPhone’s tested sharpness is relevant.
  5. Handle subjective preferences in person. Compare faces and skin tones on a display you use often. The reviewers’ preferences are informed judgments, not a standardized score for every viewer.
  6. Verify your market configuration. Prices, carrier compatibility, storage tiers, regional camera configurations, stock and availability were not established in the comparisons. Check the exact version sold in your country before ordering.

What the overall reviews do—and do not—say

91mobiles named the Galaxy S26 Ultra its overall choice across its broader set of daylight, 5x zoom, ultrawide, portrait, selfie and low-light comparisons. Tom’s Guide, in a separate two-phone photo face-off, named the iPhone 18 Pro Max its overall winner after shooting more than 200 photos with each phone in 2026. Those verdicts are not contradictory measurements of one contest; they summarize different test sets and priorities.

Use the category results instead of treating either overall label as universal. Portrait-first buyers have the strongest case for iPhone. Buyers centered on 5x framing and natural color have the clearest case for Pixel. Buyers who need flexible, long-range zoom or who often shoot illuminated urban scenes have the strongest case for Galaxy, while recognizing that another low-light scene may favor iPhone.
