Start with the display: lower brightness, enable automatic brightness, and shorten the screen timeout. Then open your phone’s Battery settings to identify unusually power-hungry apps, and use the built-in saver mode when you need the longest possible runtime. Adjust background activity, mobile networks, Bluetooth, and Location selectively; each can save power but may delay updates or disable features. Menu names and available controls vary by Android manufacturer, model, and software version, while iPhone power modes have model-specific behavior.
Change the display settings first
The screen is often the most consistent source of avoidable battery use. Display changes are reversible, work on both platforms, and do not require disabling essential services.
Lower brightness without sacrificing readability
Reduce brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable in your current lighting. A very dim screen can cause you to keep the display on longer or strain to read it, so the goal is an appropriate level rather than the absolute minimum. Brightness can be changed from the quick settings panel on Android or Control Center on iPhone.
Turn on automatic brightness
Automatic brightness lets the phone’s ambient-light sensor adjust the display as conditions change. Google lists adaptive brightness as a battery-saving option on Android. Apple’s battery guidance likewise recommends Auto-Brightness when it identifies that setting as disabled. The exact label can differ by device; look in Display or Accessibility settings if you cannot find it in the quick controls.

Shorten screen timeout or Auto-Lock
Set the display to turn off sooner when you stop using the phone. On Android this is usually called Screen timeout; on iPhone it is Auto-Lock under Display & Brightness. A shorter interval prevents the screen from remaining lit while the phone is idle. If the setting is so short that you repeatedly wake the phone while reading, choose the next-longest practical interval instead.
Try Dark theme with realistic expectations
Android includes Dark theme among its possible battery-saving adjustments, and Battery Saver may enable it automatically. It is easy to test, but the available guidance provides no measured saving and does not establish a uniform benefit for every display technology or app. Treat Dark theme as a comfort and convenience option, not a guaranteed major extension of battery life.
Use Battery settings to find the real problem
Do not begin by restricting every app. First inspect the phone’s usage breakdown, then act on the entries that are actually consuming an unusual share of power.
Android battery usage
Open the Battery section in Settings and review the list of apps or activities using the most energy. Android versions and manufacturer interfaces place the list in different locations, but it is commonly under Battery usage or App battery usage. Restrict background use, change an app’s battery setting, or uninstall an unnecessary app only after the usage screen identifies it as a problem. Navigation, video, photo backup, games, and social apps can legitimately appear near the top when you have used them heavily.
iPhone battery activity
Go to Settings → Battery. iPhone shows daily usage and app or system activity, including time spent in the foreground and work performed in the background. Background examples include turn-by-turn directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching. A high background figure is a clue to investigate that app’s settings or behavior; it is not proof that all background activity should be disabled.

Restrict selectively
For an app that repeatedly dominates the list without providing corresponding value, check its own refresh, sync, location, and notification options. Restricting an essential messaging, navigation, health, or security app can delay information you expect to receive. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it solved the drain and whether it caused a side effect.
Use built-in power-saving modes when runtime is the priority
Power-saving modes apply several changes at once. They are useful before travel, during an outage, or when the battery is already low, but they can reduce responsiveness and delay background work.

Android Battery Saver
Some Android phones provide Battery Saver or a similarly named low-power mode. Depending on the model and software, it can limit background activity, enable Dark theme, reduce visual effects, limit features or network connections, and delay app updates or notifications. Google notes that some instructions apply only to Android 13 and later and directs users to the phone maker for model-specific steps.
Because Android manufacturers use different menus, look for Battery Saver in Settings → Battery, in Quick Settings, or through the Settings search field. Read the mode’s description before enabling it if you rely on instant messaging, continuous synchronization, high-refresh-rate graphics, or location tracking.
iPhone Low Power Mode
On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings → Battery → Power Mode → Low Power Mode. On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode. The available effects can vary by model, but Apple lists a defined group of changes:

- Automatic downloads disabled.
- Some visual effects turned off.
- iCloud Photos temporarily paused.
- On most devices, 5G disabled except during video streaming or large downloads; Apple documents a model-specific exception for iPhone 12 and iPhone 13.
- On ProMotion models, the display refresh rate limited to 60 Hz.
Low Power Mode turns off automatically when the iPhone reaches 80% charge or higher. These changes can postpone syncing, downloads, and new mail, so use the mode when preserving charge is more important than receiving background updates immediately.

iPhone Adaptive Power
Adaptive Power is a separate, learning-based option. Apple’s current support material describes it as available on iPhone 15 Pro or later, with eligibility and behavior tied to the specific model and iOS release. For iOS 26 or later, Apple lists iPhone 17 models, iPhone Air, iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max as supported. Apple says it is enabled by default on iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air, but disabled by default on listed iPhone 16 models, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
When active, Adaptive Power can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode at 20%. It needs at least seven days to learn charging habits before it begins to act. Check Settings → Battery for the option and verify support on your exact model and iOS version; Apple can change eligibility with later releases.
Adjust connectivity and Location only when you do not need them
Wireless radios and location services are valuable when in use, but disabling them indiscriminately can break features or leave you without connectivity.
Prefer Wi-Fi when it is reliable
Google recommends Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when practical. In areas with weak cellular coverage, maintaining a mobile connection can use more power; Apple identifies poor signal conditions as a possible contributor to faster drain. If Wi-Fi is stable and you are not moving, it may reduce cellular work.

Use Airplane mode for genuinely offline periods
Airplane mode is appropriate on a flight, in a basement with no service, or whenever you do not need calls or mobile data. It stops ordinary mobile connectivity, so do not use it if you are waiting for a call, emergency alert, or location-dependent update. You can turn Wi-Fi or Bluetooth back on manually while leaving cellular service disabled.
Turn off Bluetooth or Location access selectively
Disable Bluetooth when you are not using accessories that depend on it. Review Location permissions and set an app to access location only while in use when continuous tracking is unnecessary. Google warns that some apps and features will not work with Location turned off; navigation, ride-hailing, geofencing, weather, and safety tools are common examples.
Reduce high-drain activities
Long GPS sessions, hotspot tethering, video streaming, and calls while moving between cell sites can all consume substantial energy. If you need to preserve charge, download content before leaving, avoid using the phone as a hotspot, and postpone extended GPS or streaming sessions. These are usage choices rather than permanent settings, so restore normal behavior when the task is complete.
Consider 5G Auto on iPhone
Apple describes 5G Auto as a way for the iPhone to fall back to LTE when 5G speed does not noticeably improve the experience. This can avoid keeping a faster network active when it provides no practical benefit. The exact cellular options depend on carrier and model; review them under Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options.
Diagnose battery drain that does not improve
Check iPhone suggestions and recent activity
In Settings → Battery, review any battery suggestions, Daily Usage, and the app/system activity breakdown. A recent software update or device setup can temporarily increase work such as indexing, downloading, and photo processing. Apple advises checking battery behavior again after a few days rather than judging the phone immediately after the update or migration.

Check battery condition
If Battery Health displays a Service message, Apple says to consider battery replacement. A replacement is a hardware remedy for a worn battery, not a substitute for identifying a misbehaving app or radio connection. Use an authorized service option appropriate for your region and model after confirming the battery-health status.
Update Android and seek model-specific support
On Android, install available system and app updates, then review Battery usage again. If the problem persists, contact the phone manufacturer because power-management behavior differs substantially among models. Avoid a factory reset as a first response: Google warns that it removes local data and apps. Back up the phone before considering a reset, and use it only after less destructive diagnostics have failed.
Choose the least disruptive combination
There is no official universal ranking or measured percentage for how much extra runtime each setting provides. Results depend on display technology, signal strength, app behavior, battery age, and how you use the phone. Choose changes according to the outcome you need:
- Normal day: use comfortable brightness, automatic brightness, a shorter timeout, and targeted app restrictions based on the Battery screen.
- Long trip or event: enable the platform’s saver mode, prefer Wi-Fi where reliable, and avoid hotspot use and prolonged streaming.
- Critical low charge: enable Low Power Mode or Battery Saver, reduce brightness, and use Airplane mode only if calls and mobile data are unnecessary.
- One app is responsible: investigate its background, sync, and Location behavior instead of imposing a phone-wide restriction.
- Drain began after an update: allow several days for post-update work to settle, then recheck usage before taking more drastic action.
Every aggressive setting has a cost: readability may suffer, notifications or synchronization may arrive later, visual effects and performance may be reduced, and Location-dependent or network features may stop working. The best configuration preserves the functions you actually need while removing idle work.
