Set the Maya eSIM as your phone’s mobile-data line and turn on data roaming for that line. Leave data roaming off on your home or Primary SIM to reduce the chance of roaming charges. On an iPhone, you can keep Primary for your usual voice, SMS and iMessage services; on Android, choose Maya as the data SIM.
Install and configure the eSIM over Wi‑Fi before departure, then select it for data when you arrive in a destination covered by your plan. The menus differ by iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel, so use the steps for your device below.
Prepare the phone before you travel
Confirm compatibility and carrier unlock status
Verify that your exact phone model and regional variant support eSIM installation. Maya Mobile maintains a compatibility list, and models can differ by market, so check the current list rather than relying on the model name alone: Maya Mobile’s compatible-phone guide. The phone must also be unlocked; a carrier restriction can prevent an otherwise compatible eSIM from activating.

Install while you have internet access
Use Wi‑Fi or a working cellular connection to install the Maya plan. Maya supports QR-code and manual activation methods. Follow the installation instructions supplied with your plan and do not wait until you are offline at the airport or at your destination.

Give the line an obvious label
After installation, rename the plan to “Maya,” the destination, or another label you will recognize. Labeling is not technically required, but it prevents mistakes when a phone asks which SIM should handle data, calls or messages.
Do not switch data too early if you are still at home
If the eSIM is installed before the trip, Maya’s quick-start guidance says to select it as the mobile-data plan when you arrive. You can prepare the line switches in advance, but leaving your normal home line as the active data line until departure avoids accidentally using the travel plan at home.

This arrangement separates the travel data connection from your regular number. Maya’s published quick-start recommendation is: “Turn off Data Roaming on your Primary line (home SIM card) to prevent data roaming charges.” The statement is from Maya Mobile Support Team’s guide, published January 27, 2025.

iPhone settings
Turn on the Maya line and its roaming
- Open Settings > Cellular. Depending on the iOS version or region, this may be labeled Mobile or Mobile Service.
- Tap the Maya plan and make sure Turn On This Line is enabled.
- In that same plan’s settings, turn on Data Roaming. Roaming is required for the Maya eSIM to register on a supported destination network.
Assign cellular data to Maya
- Return to Settings > Cellular.
- Tap Cellular Data (called Mobile Data in some regions).
- Select the Maya eSIM.
When the Maya plan is selected for data, iPhone apps use its connection while travelling. Maya’s example keeps Primary assigned to voice, SMS and iMessage, so your existing number remains available according to your home carrier’s service and roaming policies.
Protect the home line from data roaming
Open Settings > Cellular > Primary and confirm that Data Roaming is off. This blocks data roaming on the home line while preserving the line for functions you intentionally leave enabled. Turning off roaming here does not automatically cancel fees for calls, SMS or other services; those depend on your carrier’s terms.
Optionally limit background use
To reduce automatic downloads and background refresh over the travel connection, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and enable Low Data Mode. It is a consumption-control option, not a requirement for activation. Apps may refresh less often and some automatic backups or media downloads may wait until you are on Wi‑Fi.

Android settings
Select Maya as the data SIM
Android labels vary by manufacturer and operating-system version. The goal is the same: choose the Maya eSIM under the phone’s SIM or mobile-network settings as the line for mobile data.

On a Samsung phone, open Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager, then select Maya for mobile data. On a Google Pixel, open Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs and choose Maya as the mobile-data SIM.
Enable roaming for Maya
On Samsung, the relevant control is generally under Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks; on Pixel, open Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs, select Maya and enable Roaming. If your manufacturer uses different wording, open the Maya SIM’s details and look for its roaming switch rather than changing the home SIM.
Disable roaming on the home SIM
Open the home or Primary SIM’s details and turn off its data-roaming option. This reduces the likelihood that the home carrier will bill the line for foreign data if the phone changes the selected data SIM or briefly falls back to it.

Android’s Data Saver feature can restrict background data. It is optional and separate from the roaming switch: enable it if you want tighter control over background traffic, but do not mistake it for a substitute for selecting Maya as the data SIM.

What to change when you arrive
Once you are physically in a country or region covered by the purchased plan, check the active line before opening data-heavy apps:
- Confirm the Maya line is turned on.
- Confirm Maya is selected for cellular or mobile data.
- Confirm data roaming is on for Maya.
- Confirm data roaming remains off for the home or Primary line.
An installed Maya eSIM does not connect everywhere. It connects only in the destination covered by the plan you bought, so a lack of service outside that area is not fixed by repeatedly changing settings.

- Check that you are in the plan’s covered destination.
- Check that the Maya line is enabled.
- Check that Maya is the selected mobile-data SIM.
- Check that data roaming is enabled on Maya, not merely on the home line.
Refresh the network registration
Turn Airplane Mode on, wait 30 seconds, and turn it off. The phone will try to register again. Maya says authentication can take up to 15 minutes, so allow that time before assuming activation failed.
Android-only APN step
If an Android phone still has no data after the basic checks and reconnection attempt, inspect its Access Point Names (APN). Maya’s troubleshooting guide specifies the APN value globaldata and says that no username or password is required. This is a conditional repair step, not a setting every traveler should enter before departure.
Manual network selection comes later
If resetting the connection and checking the APN do not help, manual network selection may be tried from the mobile-network settings. The exact menu differs by phone. Use it only after the baseline checks; choosing an unsupported network can leave the line disconnected.

Maya explicitly warns against deleting the eSIM during initial connection troubleshooting. Removing it can require a new installation process and may leave you without the plan while travelling. Keep the profile installed while you work through the checks or contact Maya support.
Calls, texts and your existing number
Maya Mobile eSIM plans are data-only and do not provide a local telephone number. Keeping Primary selected for voice and SMS on an iPhone, or leaving the home SIM available on Android, does not make calls and texts free abroad. Your carrier can charge for roaming calls, SMS or other services even when mobile data is supplied by Maya.
Some carriers support Wi‑Fi Calling over the Maya data connection, allowing the home number to work through the internet. Availability, activation requirements and fees are controlled by the home carrier; confirm those terms before relying on the feature. - Roaming enabled on the wrong line: Maya needs roaming on; the home line should normally have data roaming off.
- eSIM installed but not selected: Installation alone does not make Maya the active data connection.
- Testing outside the covered destination: The plan is destination-specific and will not connect everywhere.
- Assuming data-only means number-only billing is impossible: Calls and SMS on the home line remain subject to that carrier’s international rules.
