Satellite connectivity is controlled by a combination of phone model, software, carrier, plan, region, network mode and physical visibility of the sky—not by one universal switch. Apple’s own satellite tools use a Connection Assistant, while carrier services can add a separate Satellite setting; Android behavior varies by service.
Start by identifying which satellite service you have
“Satellite connectivity” describes two different arrangements. A phone maker may provide emergency or limited messaging through its own satellite network. Separately, a mobile carrier may offer satellite-to-phone service tied to a particular line, plan and coverage area. Their menus and prerequisites are not interchangeable.
| Feature type | Provider and interface | Typical requirements | What settings matter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple built-in satellite features | Apple Connection Assistant in Settings or Control Center | iPhone 14 or later, compatible iOS, supported country or region, no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage | Current iOS, Satellite/Connection Assistant access, unobstructed sky view |
| Carrier-provided satellite on iPhone | Carrier service; status bar can show “SAT” | iPhone 13 or later, current iOS, supported carrier and possibly an eligible plan | Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Satellite; carrier registration and billing |
| Carrier-specific Android satellite service | Carrier emergency or messaging workflow | Service-compatible handset, active line, carrier coverage and registration | Carrier instructions; data mode and Airplane Mode rules differ by service |
| Google Pixel Satellite SOS | Pixel emergency workflow | Supported software and APIs, satellite-network registration, carrier and government arrangements | No universal Android toggle or menu path is established |
Before changing settings, check the model, operating-system version, carrier, plan and location. A missing menu can indicate unsupported service rather than a misconfigured phone.

Supported hardware and software
Apple says iPhone 14 and later can use its satellite functions in supported locations when neither cellular nor Wi-Fi is available. Update iOS before travelling beyond coverage. Depending on availability, the functions include Emergency SOS, roadside assistance, Messages and Find My. Apple says the satellite network is supplied by Globalstar, Inc. and affiliates or other network providers. Apple’s statement that activation includes these features free for two years is time-sensitive, so verify the current terms for the device and region.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Availability is tied to the country or region where the iPhone was purchased as well as where it is being used. Apple’s current support information excludes models purchased in Armenia, Belarus, China mainland, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Russia. For models purchased in Hong Kong and Macao, Apple lists satellite connectivity only for iPhone 16e and later. These lists can change; check Apple’s current availability page before relying on the feature.
Open the Connection Assistant
- Move outside an area without cellular and Wi-Fi service.
- Open Settings > Satellite, or open Control Center and tap the Satellite option.
- Follow the on-screen direction prompts to point the iPhone toward the satellite.
- Hold the phone naturally and keep following prompts until the message or emergency exchange completes.
In iOS 18 and later, the Connection Assistant is available through Settings or Control Center. If the iPhone still has cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, the Settings Satellite option may not appear; the Control Center control opens a demonstration in that situation. You do not need to switch off cellular data to force the phone onto a satellite. The documented flow begins when ordinary coverage is unavailable.
What affects the connection in the field
Use an outdoor position with a clear view of both sky and horizon. Light foliage can slow transmission. Dense foliage, hills, mountains, canyons and tall buildings can block it altogether. Apple says satellite use may fail in some areas above 62° latitude. In ideal conditions with a direct sky and horizon view, Apple says a message might take 30 seconds or more; light or medium foliage, higher latitudes and local signal conditions can extend delivery to several minutes. This is Apple’s guidance, not a guaranteed delivery time.

Carrier-provided satellite settings on iPhone
How to find the carrier switch
Apple documents a separate carrier category that can support iPhone 13 or later with current iOS, a participating carrier and, in some cases, an eligible cellular plan. When the service is active, the status bar can display SAT.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- Choose Cellular Data Options.
- Tap Satellite and change the carrier feature setting.
On an iPhone with multiple SIMs, select the relevant carrier or phone number before looking for the option. If Satellite is absent, the carrier may not offer the service, may not support your plan or may not support it in your current location. Carrier fees and data rates can apply, so confirm eligibility and charges with the carrier.
Apple also notes that a carrier could provide satellite cellular connectivity during certain disaster situations even when the everyday carrier feature was switched off and “SAT” was not shown. Treat that as a carrier-controlled emergency capability, not as a setting that guarantees service.

Verizon’s Android Satellite SOS requirements
Verizon’s documented workflow is specific to its service. It requires a satellite-messaging-capable device, active cellular service with cellular data turned on and a location inside Verizon’s listed coverage region. Airplane Mode must be off; Verizon explicitly says satellite messaging will not work while Airplane Mode is enabled.
- When there is no ordinary service, dial 911.
- Follow the Satellite SOS prompts shown by the phone.
- Use the positioning instructions to establish the satellite link.
When Verizon’s normal network is available, the phone uses that network instead of the satellite workflow. These requirements should not be treated as universal Android behavior. Read the carrier’s current instructions at Verizon Satellite Connectivity – Start Satellite SOS (Android).

Google Pixel Satellite SOS
Google’s Pixel guidance describes a different dependency model. Activation can require software and API updates plus registration with the satellite network. Connectivity depends on network coverage, current network conditions and arrangements involving the carrier and the relevant government agency. Google does not establish one Android-wide switch or menu path in that guidance, so do not infer that a Verizon setting, an Airplane Mode rule or an iPhone menu applies to every Pixel or Android service. Review the instructions for the exact Pixel model and carrier at Google Pixel Phone Help: Get emergency help through satellite with your Pixel phone.
Settings checklist before you leave coverage
- Confirm hardware: Apple’s native feature starts at iPhone 14; carrier services can use different model cutoffs, such as iPhone 13 or later for the Apple-documented carrier category.
- Install updates: Run the latest compatible iOS or the carrier-recommended Android software and API updates while you still have internet access.
- Verify the line: Check that the intended SIM or phone number is selected and that the carrier plan is eligible.
- Check service registration: Some Android implementations require registration with the satellite network before an emergency.
- Set the correct radio state: Follow the service’s rule for cellular data and Airplane Mode. Verizon’s Android instructions require data on and Airplane Mode off; Apple’s native flow does not ask you to disable cellular data.
- Confirm geography: Check supported countries, regions, latitude limits and the carrier’s coverage map.
- Plan the physical position: Know where you can reach open ground with a view of the horizon, away from buildings, cliffs and dense tree cover.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No Satellite option in iPhone Settings | Cellular or Wi-Fi coverage is still present, or the model, region or service is unsupported | Try the Control Center demonstration only to confirm the interface; then verify model, iOS version, purchase region and carrier eligibility. |
| Carrier Satellite menu is missing | The carrier or plan does not support the feature, or the wrong SIM is selected | Select the intended line under Cellular and contact the carrier about supported plans, countries and fees. |
| Android Satellite SOS will not start | Carrier prerequisites are not met, the phone is not registered, or the service is outside its coverage area | Check active service, required software/API updates, registration and the carrier’s regional rules. |
| Prompt appears but transmission stalls | Obstructed sky view, poor orientation, foliage, high latitude or changing local conditions | Move to open ground, face the horizon, follow the movement arrows and remain still while the phone transmits. |
| No connection in Airplane Mode | The specific carrier service prohibits satellite messaging in that mode | For Verizon’s documented Android service, turn Airplane Mode off and leave cellular data on. Do not generalize that rule to other providers without their instructions. |
| Emergency connectivity works differently from normal use | A carrier may enable a temporary disaster capability independent of the everyday toggle | Follow the emergency prompts and do not assume that a missing “SAT” indicator means guaranteed or permanent access. |
What settings can—and cannot—solve
Settings control whether the phone is allowed to use a service and whether the required radio state is present. They cannot add satellite hardware to an incompatible model, extend a carrier’s coverage region, register an unsupported plan or see through a mountain or building. No separate antenna, booster or accessory is required by Apple’s connection instructions; the decisive physical requirement is an unobstructed view of the sky.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For an Apple-native connection, start with current software, an eligible iPhone and the Connection Assistant. For a carrier service, start with the carrier’s model and plan requirements, then use the carrier-specific toggle or emergency workflow. For Android, treat every provider’s documentation as authoritative for its own service rather than borrowing settings from another network.
